On New Year's Eve, a group of friends and I encountered an unnecessarily aggressive situation with the security staff at Comet Tavern. While waiting in line, a member of the security team approached me and yelled at me to get rid of my can I was holding. I complied immediately by apologizing, and disposing of the container in a nearby trash can. Despite my cooperation, the encounter escalated. The bouncer approached me again and, inches from my face began to SCREAM at me "NEXT TIME DONT F***CKING DRINK THAT SH*T IN FRONT OF ME'." I apologized once more for the misunderstanding, as I believed I was following his instructions by discarding the drink. A second security guard was then called over and also got RIGHT in my face, screaming that "ACTUALLY YOU CAN WAIT IN THIS LINE BUT WHEN YOU GET TO THE FRONT YOUR ASS ISNT GETTING IN, WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE'." There was absolutely no reason in hell these men needed to get in my face and scream, curse and attempt to intimate me the way they did. I was completely sober, very apologetic, and I posed no threat to the safety of the establishment or its patrons. This level of intimidation and hostility was entirely unwarranted, and I am in shock that Comet Tavern allows these security guards to treat patrons of the establishment this way. It is profoundly disappointing that individuals tasked with ensuring the safety and security of the establishment instead choose to abuse their authority for the sake of intimidation. Rather than maintaining a professional environment, their conduct suggests a preference for power trips over effective security management. This experience was utterly unacceptable and reflects poorly on the venue's standards. 0/5 stars. read more

To start off, my partner and I had not been here in many years but both have fond memories of it. Tonight, 11/17, we were walking by and decided to go in. My partner was smoking a cigarette so we didn't immediately approach the door. When we did, we had our IDs out and in hand, planning to show them at the bar. We ran into the bouncer, who was on his way back out. He immediately accused us of deliberately waiting for him to be away from the door before trying to get in, and then made us empty our bags and pockets and scanned us with a metal detecting wand. We were very polite and apologized for running into him. He made no attempt to change the mood whatsoever. We walked inside, and the bartender greeted us warmly, despite the fact that she was making a drink at the time. At this point we both felt uncomfortable and decided instead to leave. We already weren't planning to come back, but after reading the recent reviews here, its very clear that whoever they have running security is combative at best and violent at worst. We've both lived on the hill for years, and this is an institution. Sad to see it like this. My partner and I are both long time bar workers and can understand the third degree, but not on a Monday when there are less than 10 people in the bar. read more

Had an awful experience with the bouncer/security working the front door the night of 9/12. After waiting 30 minutes to get in the bar and watching said bouncer let in 5-6 other people who walked right up to him, I stood closer to the entrance of the bar and he decided I was too close and caused a scene, yelled at me to move back, and was just really unprofessional and aggressive. Once I grabbed my ID back from him, he decided that I had snatched it out of his hand and told me that I wasn't allowed in. Honestly this all seemed to be some kind of power trip, and on our way out he grabbed one of my friends aggressively by the arm as well. I have never been spoken to like that by anyone working a customer-facing role. I am not coming back and will make sure to spread the word that this place hires folks that will harass and antagonize their customers. All of the other reviews, including the one where he punched someone in the face, describe the same person that antagonized me that night. Bartender was overly distracted she asked us what our drink orders were like four times, there were 4 people at the bar and a total of maybe 12-15 in the bar itself. Also we one vodka redbull at least on a Wednesday night was 15 which seems like nightclub price. The music that was playing was good though. read more

Like a lot of reviewers, we also had a bizarre run in with the doorman. We arrived at the bar. We smoked outside. We were chatting and laughing but acting very calm and normal. We are both in our 40s and had been drinking moderately prior. So we are ready to go in and the bouncer cards us and he goes "Ok you need to drink water or you will be cut off....you are very close to being cut off" It was just so strange and unwarranted. We were quite sober and drank moderately the whole night. We were not sloppy or anything. We just couldn't even relax after that; it ruined our night. Very disappointed with our recent trip here. My cousin, a few friends, and I all went here on a Sunday. There were only two other groups here, so it was pretty slow. My cousin and I always go to the restroom together because Seattle is definitely not the safest place, so we make sure to look out for each other. Once we get out of the restroom, the security guard blocks our way to get back to our table with our phones and wallets, and tell us we are kicked out for going to the restroom together. We tell him due to safety as two women, we always go together. He says he doesn't care, calls us "tw*ts", and tells us to leave. I tell him we need to at least get our phones before going out to the Seattle streets, to which he denies and blocks access to. We have never experienced this at any other bar or restaurant before in Seattle, as most places understand the importance of staying in groups as women. He also called three other bars in Capitol Hill and told them we were banned for going to the restroom together. The bars told us they didn't understand it, but that they didn't have any say unfortunately. The bartenders were very kind, but the one security guard was the opposite. the WORST bouncers and environment when we went the night of 11/12. the bouncer is on a power trip the entire time and feels entitled when speaking to the people politely waiting in line. as others have also mentioned in previous reviews - the bouncer stated that my friend "snatched" her ID back and rudely said she wasn't going to get in with that attitude when all she was doing was grabbing the ID back after he was done and apologized if she offended him. i really do not recommend - so rude and entitled. not only that, he was very misogynistic and told the guys in our group "watch the girls" after we entered when all we were doing was patiently waiting and truly didn't mind at all. male bouncers were also intrusive entering girls restrooms and kicking them out for no reason. truly RUDE and disappointing - the bouncers power trips are ridiculous and unnecessarily aggressive. hire new bouncers they're awful - DONT RECOMMEND. you shouldn't have to face rude bouncers in order to have a good time read more

When the doors eventually opened as other people were leaving, we asked the security multiple times if they were closing early (closing on the door says 2am), and never received an answer. Shortly after when an employee came out to throw out some boxes, we kindly asked once again if they were closing early, initially received no answer, and then when they were looping back to the entrance they passed by us and mocked us saying "does it say we're closed? Have you tried walking f*cking in?" Before walking back in and having the security hold the door-- again. Another group was pleading about another person they got separated from before being locked out, which eventually lead to the security guard slamming the door outward and getting in her face and yelling at her to "f*ck off" and to stop knocking on the door. When someone nearby tried to tell them to back off, another security rushed out and started yelling the n-word at them and the situation began to escalate-- at which point my group and I walked away and visited the wonderful taco pop-up next door :) So, in short, would never recommend this place to anyone-- much less try to bring friends who are visiting town to this horrid place. read more

Honestly it's a great space, the music was great, and they have great seating. Unfortunately, the positives stop there. The bathroom was really dirty and one of the toilets didn't have a seat on it. My partner told me in the other bathroom, the toilet wouldn't flush and it was full of other people's... you get it. While I was in the bathroom my partner was taking a few deep breaths and closed his eyes and one of the bouncers came up and told him to keep his eyes open or he has to go. I understand they've probably had people pass out and had to deal with it but sheesh. read more

Crowd is very lively and it's not hard to get a drink (or five). You can relax at a booth and dance your bum off. However, the past few times have been a little wonky. Going in entrance one, I showed the bouncer my drivers license they nearly took it. I said absolutely not. Snatched it and ran to entrance two. The bouncer then proceeded to tell me I'm too drunk and that he spoke to the previous girl. I only had 2 vodka red bulls. That's still the driving limit. Very disappointed, Comet. Reviewing for: Casual Bar experience middle of day on Saturday Came here in the middle of the day after brunch looking for a place to play some games, feel like we're not shoulder to shoulder with people, and grab some post-brunch snacks and this place did not disappoint. Location: on a busy street-Pike and 10th. Parking around the area is 2-hour paid, usually like $3.50/hour. Food: you can grab snacks from Lost Lake when you're drinking which is great. We grab appetizers like tots and fries. Brunch is also served in this bar since they have a connecting door. Space: the space is huge and has an upstairs/downstairs. They have pool, large tables for bigger groups, and TVs/projectors around (the world cup was playing when we were there). They also have a photo booth. Music is hit or miss for me. Bathroom: They have gendered bathrooms- not the cleanest but also expected. There are gender-neutral restrooms in Lost Lake. Overall: A place where you get what you expect and when you're looking for a no-frills, kind bartending, chill experience in the middle of the day this place is perfect. Dive Bar! If your into this kind of thing, then its perfect for you. Dive's don't normally thrill me, but, like most out-of-towners, I had to check out this historical place where so many amazing grunge bands got their start. To be on the safe side, I made sure to order a bottled beer only. I enjoyed this cold beer as well as the amazing photos that documented how The Comet looked prior to closing its doors and reopening under new management and a "face lift". I use the term "face lift" lightly. If it weren't for the old photos on the wall displaying how bad this place preciously looked, I wouldn't believed it! (By the way, I'm pretty sure you needed a hazmat suit to use the bathroom in the old days.) Anyhow, its worth a visit, but you likely wont stay long. read more

Stopped here on our last night in Seattle, wanted to check out the historical dive bar that has hosted so many famous grunge bands over the years like Nirvana and Pearl Jam...and heard the drinks were good and cheap. No cover charge, we grabbed seats at the bar near the entrance ..great spot for some people watching. The bartender was nice and was able to take care of everyone at the bar. I went with a simple cold bottle of Coors light, whenever at dive bars I try to order bottles...cleaner that way. I was never at the original/old Comet so I'm not sure of all the changes. However I loved walking around this place cheeking out all the history on the walls. From the graffiti parts of the original walls, photos and the the neon C from Pike Place Market still hangs on the wall by the stage. The dollar bills tossed and pinned to the ceiling, bartender said it takes some talent to do this... we didn't try. There's also two pool tables and a few pinball machines scattered around. There was a band that night but, we took off as they were warming up.Glad we stopped by and got some local flavor with a look back at all the bar history. read more

There were also a bunch of dollar bills on the ceiling which was an interesting touch. I used to love this place when I was in my 20's. I moved from Seattle about 10 years ago, but during my last visit, I decided to pop in to the Comet and grab a drink with some friends. The interior has definitely taken a beating. But I didn't mind, I always enjoyed the divey atmosphere. But then things got bad very quickly. I was in line at the bar. The person in front of me ordered 4 beers and tipped $6. The bartender had the audacity to get angry and tell the customer that he needs to tip more next time if he wants service. I was blown away by this. I don't know what the bill was but for 4 beers, $6 sounds decent to me. Well I didn't order anything. I grabbed my friends and left. Very much dig the vibes of Comet for the long time. Specifically, I love when I'm lucking enough to roll in when Joon is working at the bar. She has literally raised to the creme of the crop of all Seattle bartenders I have interacted with. Not only is she just on top of her shit, she is fast and friendly and when watching her interact with other customers she treats everyone as a friend. She checks in on her patrons, is attentive, and accommodating... everything you would want from a great bartender. It's apparent that her interactions with her customers come from a genuine place of care and dedication to her job. Every time I walk into the Comet, I cross my fingers that Joon is working. Thank you Comet for being a welcoming place for not only me but my pup, and thank you to Joon for all the good vibes! read more
