    Banchan

Got there right at 11:00 and got the second to last table. Word of warning they won't seat your party until everyone is there so if someone in your party is habitually late you may have a long wait. Had the spicy seafood tofu stew which was amazing. Great banchan too. Reasonably priced too.

Per my partner, Cho Dang Gol is his Korean best friend's all-time favorite Korean restaurant in the states. After having dinner here last night, I can see why. This was some of the best Korean food I've had, and there are plenty of options on the menu - perfect for sharing with a larger party. As a forewarning, waits for a table can take betwen 60-120 minutes. But that makes for a great opportunity to get light bites or drinks elsewhere. Standouts from CDG were the spicy galbi jim (not too spicy, for those like me who have low tolerance for heat) and mussel rice. The banchan here was also delicious. While waitstaff were scrambling to serve all the patrons, it was relaticely easy to flag them down for water and banchan refills. All to say, this place is popping and should be on your NYC hit list.

comforting Korean food! My friends and I ordered food for takeout, so we avoided the lines... the beef and mushroom japchae was delicious and the best I've had! The meat was so well marinated. the spicy tofu stew was very good too. we got a few containers of rice in our order, super hot, so we knew it was fresh. we got a seafood pancake. that one did not travel well, and was soggy and had no crisp unfortunately. the beef bibimbap was good; not a standout to me.

Delicious food, been here a couple times when we visit NYC and it still remains top places to visit for me. The wait will be long if you come at peak hours, large parties and they don't seat you until your full party is there. We went right when it opened and got the spicy Kalbi tang, the small pork bossam and egg roll with roe filling. Each dish seemed to get better and better with the highlight being the Kalbi tang, spicy and sweet, tender pieces of short rib on the bone with rice cakes and cooked with various vegetables. That dish itself is worth the visit. They also give you a small bowl of their homemade tofu in its broth free. It's a hopping restaurant so if you're wanting to relax, it's probably not here. The ambiance is bustling. The servers are bali bali (fast) and the food is worth it!

I came in fully preparing myself to be let down after hearing so much high praise for CDG, but they really do live up to the hype! Even from the beginning, the tofu appetizer and banchan were already so good. The tofu tastes really clean, super soy bean-y and pure. But if you don't like tofu, you probably won't like this dish. My top three of the night were the cod roe omelet, mini bossam, and spicy kimchi tofu stew. The cod roe omelet was so fluffy, and the cod roe wasn't bitter at all which I kind of expected. It was super creamy and the sauce on top made it even better. I saw the mini bossam used to come with the salted shrimp, so I was kind of sad to see we didn't get any. But it was still really good! I'm usually not a big jalapeño fan, but it gave it the perfect kick paired alongside everything else. And the spicy kimchi tofu stew was so good. It was the perfect amount of spice for me, and so so flavorful. It was kind of salty, and I'm sure if I had a whole bowl to myself I'd be really thirsty. But for sharing amongst several people, it wasn't too bad. The only things I was neutral about were the bulgogi and the soybean curd stew. They were good, but just didn't stand out to me the way everything else did. The rice is an additional charge, but it's pretty essential to the meal. I like the bowl it comes in, because it makes the bottom crispy. But the texture reminded me a lot of Korean microwaveable instant rice, which I'm not as big a fan of. The service was really quick too. I was kind of impressed by how fast they brought out food, cleared any empty dishes, and rotated customers in and out.

If you don't get here early, you'll have to wait at least 1.5 hrs to get a table. Honestly, it's worth it though. They told us it would be about 1.5 hrs wait for 7 people and it was about that. It wasn't too bad though, we just sat outside and waited. When we got in, they gave us menus and then we split everything (that's the move in big groups honestly!). It is pretty loud, but you can still hear each other it you speak up. We ordered the cod roe omelette, kimchi stew, bulgogi, soybean stew, and bossam. They give you an appetizer of bean curd and while it doesn't look appetizing; it's really good. I was hesitant cause I don't like grainy things, but this was yummy. My favorites was the stews and cod roe omelette. The bossam was yummy, but I wished we had lettuce with it. Bulgogi was good, but nothing special. I'd go for lunch because they had a pretty solid lunch deal!

    Spicy Galbi Jjim
    Simran K.

I've visited CDG several times, and it never disappoints. The wait can be long, but adding your name early and exploring nearby keeps things easy--and the food is absolutely worth it. You're welcomed with complimentary tofu cooked in-house and a rotating seasonal banchan that sets the tone beautifully. What we ordered: * Spicy Galbi Jjim (5/5): Possibly the best in the city--perfectly tender meat in generous portions, especially divine with the accompanying rice, that we also ordered. * Cod Roe Omelette (5/5): A standout dish with subtly sweet egg and salty, umami-rich cod roe that balance each other perfectly. * Buckwheat Pancake (4.5/5): A unique, hearty complement to the Galbi Jjim--delicious fresh and even better reheated the next day, though a touch oily. The warm, homey Korean ambiance and kind service round out an experience that feels both comforting and consistently exceptional.

The Galbi Jjim was super tender and the rolled omelet's flavor was unique and very yummy! Service was super friendly, attentive and fast! Make sure your whole party is present and don't be put off by a long line if you get there before it opens.

Finally took it upon myself to come here right when they opened and put my name down immediately to avoid the otherwise 2 hour wait that they always have. I got there 20 min after opening and they told me 30 minute wait. I put my name in and went for a nice long walk to kill the time. Came back and was sat for my meal. Service was quick and all of the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I got the spicy baby octopus & beef bulgogi entree and it was soooooo good. I get the hype. I will definitely be back here ASAP to try all of the other wonderful dishes on the menu. This is a must-try if you enjoy Korean food.

We got the dinner set and bossam and it was enough food for 4 people. The total came out to be around $150. For a Friday night, we had to wait 2.5 hrs which is not something I would normally do. The best part was the service. Staff is attentive and kind and they filled the empty banchans without us having to ask. I don't normally see that in Korean restaurants so that is amazing. Food was quite good as well. The Galbijjim had good flavor but probably could've been a bit more tender. The egg omelette was soft and tasty. The bossam was pretty good but I wish it came with pickled daikon or pickled cabbage(not kimchi) and the portion was small. Tofu pork soup was good! I would come here again as long as the wait is below 30 minutes.

    Spicy Seafood Tofu Stew

It's always busy here but for good reason. I came right after 5 pm on a Wednesday and was quoted a 30 min wait for 1, but as soon as I stepped outside I got the text that my table was ready! Not sure how much easier/harder it is to dine with a group vs. solo but I've come many times alone and usually have to endure a short wait. By the time I was done with my meal, there was a sizable crowd outside waiting for tables. The service is attentive and quick, very well orchestrated for a no-fuss, efficient meal. They do check in and ask if you want refills on the side dish, which I always do. They always change up the banchan but on this day I had some simple vegetables, a radish (?) kimchi, fish cakes, a sampling of fresh tofu and a braised fish dish that blew me away. I ended up focusing on that more than the spicy seafood kimchi stew that I came for, which was warm and not too spicy and filled with a variety of shell fish. I may prefer this over the beef kimchi stew I usually get. You have the option of getting plain or eggplant rice with the soup, but I'd recommend just plain. The eggplant doesn't really go with the soup in my opinion, though it is a great dish in its own right. I will definitely be back, hopefully with a bigger group so I can try some of the large format dishes.

    Perilla Seed Tofu Stew

We went on a Thursday evening right around opening and was pleasantly surprised that we were able to walk in given the expected hype. The service was very attentive and the waiters were super nice! Not sure if they give bonchan refills cuz we were so full from the food. The restaurant itself was cozy and the layout had a row of connected 2-seater tables separated by a divider. The perilla seed tofu stew had a nice texture with the diced mushrooms and tofu. It was a bit salty but offsets nicely with the rice (which is $2 for a large bowl btw) The galbi jjim meat was so tender and fell off the bone! The soup itself had the sweet fragrance of dates. The seafood pancake was delicious and loaded with squid pieces.

    Cod Roe Omelet

We went after the blizzard in NY and thought it would be empty but we were so wrong haha. There was a wait but we were lucky enough to get a table within 20 minutes of queuing. Their tofu is housemade and is the star of their menu. Asides from their tofu dishes, you MUST try the cod roe omelette. 10/10! The wooden interior really felt like it transported me back to Korea.

No purple rice, always white rice and a seasonal rice such as the eggplant chive rice (my favorite) or the mixed vegetable rice.

When we went they served white rice, but I believe you can order other types of rice (brown, e.g.).

It has a lively zest from the wasabi and is topped with tobiko, which adds a pleasant contrast in texture. ~ Honey Makgeolli - 4/5 stars A traditional fermented Korean beverage that is light and pairs brilliantly with your meal. I ordered the soju flight but I ended up not liking it so my cousins shared it. The meal comes with different veggies as well as your choice of soup. We got the spicy tofu and split it 6 ways. The spice lived up to its name, so I didn't eat very much. The best part was meat. Despite there being 6 of us, there was plenty to go around. I think you have the option to cook it yourself or have them cook it for you and we chose the latter. While I enjoyed it, I wish there was more space. Most of the space was taken up by the accompaniments that come with it (veggies, etc), so there was hardly any room to put anything else. It didn't help that none of our dishes were cleared once we finished them and that no rice is included. Aside from that, both the food and service were great.

But there's no denying that BCD has upped their soondubu game considerably in the last decade+ with a thicker, more deeply flavored broth, and now easily rivals my longtime favorite and gold standard, the OG So Kong Dong in Fort Lee. Then I stumbled into a hack that changed my view: lunch! I ducked in for a late lunch on a whim while walking by one day, and this turned out to be a much chiller hour, unhurried and no reservation needed. I was promptly seated, my order taken, and the banchan swiftly laid out. The banchan spread is solid across the board (the little fried fish does nothing for me, but seems to be a highlight for everyone else). I especially love the kimchi, near-perfect IMO, and the pickled cucumber. There's a modest lunch discount, which is a nice bonus for someone who likes to order aggressively. I usually get an oyster, seafood, or assorted soondubu (with a raw egg cracked in), danger spicy of course! Or go the C1 combo route with a galbi (marinated bbq beef short ribs) + smaller soondubu. It's an enormous amount of food, so I take most of the galbi home and feel no shame about it. The galbi, by the way, has also gotten noticeably better over the years - meatier, tender, and the flavor is on point. I've also enjoyed their bibimbap, bulgogi, jap chae, and seafood pancake. Finally, let's talk heat - this chili-head loooves fire! And BCD's danger level is one of the rare instances where the spice level actually meets my punishing tolerance for heat, not some pretense at "American spicy.," despite this being a chain. Their danger level actually means business and brings tears to my eyes, literally. It's still not my favorite place ambience wise, and dinner remains a contact sport I've mostly opted out of, as gone are the days that I can tolerate a culinary mosh pit, and any wait longer than 10 minutes (and only for a superlative place) will trigger an automatic ejection of my presence. But for lunch? Unexpectedly great. 4 stars for dinner, 5 for lunch.
