Anyways, we stumbled across Cheesetella (via Yelp) and saw a bunch of pics. We ordered the cheesetella and the ube cheese cake. Both are pretty awesome and you can't go wrong! I have been here at least 3 times already. Best part is I never had to wait in line for something so good. I just hate the idea of waiting in line because it kills my overall mood. Dare I say that Cheesetella is better than Uncle Tetsu? One is Japanese and the other, Cheesetella, hails from Korea, but both cheesecakes are of the *cloud-like* consistency of castella cakes. Cheesetella offers a unique twist on the fluffy cheesecake with their Creamtella, which is basically a layer of light whipped cream in your flavor of choice sandwiched between two slices of sponge cake. Trust me on this, but that takes it to a whole other level! We tried the Creamtella in two flavors, original and matcha. The matcha powder is baked into the sponge cake AND mixed into the whipped cream, so you'll love the matcha one if you're a matcha aficionado! If you could taste clouds, I would imagine it would taste like a castella from Cheesetella. Their bread is super fluffy, light, and airy! But just like how you can't taste clouds, the same can be said for this place as well... I found it pretty bland overall. It's located in a plaza near Harvard and Coronado. Parking was plentiful, I didn't have any trouble at all finding a spot. Ordering was pretty quick since they had all everything boxed up and ready to go. The menu consists of castellas with different flavors and fillings, as well as Uncle Tetsu-like cheesecakes, roll cakes, and drinks. I tried both the Plain Castella and the Chocotella. My batch was fresh out of the oven and still in the process of cooling down. Their loaves are humongous, I want to say it was about 18" x 26" ? They then slice the bread into twelve pieces and package each in a box. The texture is spongy and springy. So maybe it's supposed to be enjoyed with coffee or milk tea or something... but by itself? There was a hint of egg, but I thought it was flavorless. On the flip side, the lack of sweetness meant I also wasn't too guilty about finishing my box in one sitting. This is a solid Japanese-style Cheesecake place. I enjoy this style of sponge cake cheesecake. I had the ube flavored cheesecake, but I'm pretty sure it was taro. I like taro too, but it wasn't what I was expecting. The actual cake was soft and it melted in my mouth, mmm. It also had a good, smooth texture and the sponge holes were extraordinarily fine, so that's great. As for the size, I'd say it's about 6" in diameter, so it's enough for 6 people to get a good slice (or 2 people to eat for dinner). My roommate loved the chocolate one. It was a subtle chocolate flavor and its base had some delicious chocolate chips. Prices are moderate to expensive, you'll spend about $9 to $15 for an item here. I previously frequented their Buena Park location at The Source, so imagine my excitement when my friend told me we now have this new edition in the Harvard Place Shopping Center! You have your choices of their cheesetella cakes, roll cakes, or the cheesecakes. The cheesetellas have that airy fluffiness but I'm a bit more partial to their ube cheesecake - hands down my fave. But try all the flavors and see what works for ya! While still in their soft opening phase (I believe they just opened last week?), most of their baked goods were still in supply. I did want to pickup their cheesetella but that was already sold out and my eyes were hungry...no time to wait 30 mins! Luckily I was able to grab one of ube cheesecakes still available. Although not too crowded yet, I did notice A LOT of pickup orders placed. I inquired if we can call in orders in advance and was told they aren't taking phone orders right now, but you can use the Hungry Panda app to place a pickup order.
