I have read that this was one of the best places to eat in Buda, then a good friend of mine told me this was absolutely a spot to check out. So here we go. Tortilla chips were good. A bit thicker than I'm used to, and have a nice crunch to them. Salsa was good, queso was a tad too thick for my liking and tasted pretty ordinary. not the least bit authentic. Guacamole was nice. I ordered the Barbacoa plate. It was somewhat dry compared to what I've come to expect from barbacoa.. It should be very moist and greasy in my opinion. Rice and beans were actually on point. Just a side note--- WHY is it sooo hard for restaurants these days to have the big glass sugar dispensers??? I absolutely hate opening 500 sugar packets to get my tea sweetened. I woulda ordered a soda but they only come in cans in this town...then by the time you get your tea to the right ratio of tea and sugar, they come by and fill it up again making you start all over from the beginning....shake, shake, shake- rrripppp...shake, shake, shake-rrrippp..... Any way, my wife ordered the chimichanga. And that's when this place lost the little bit of luster it had. You automatically get deducted 2 stars for serving store bought tortillas.. How you gonna be some fantastic "best mexican" restaurant in town and serve store bought tortillas. I immediately stopped eating and had to text my buddy to ask why he would recommend this place... Five stars for the best carne guisada around! And the tortillas are just melt in your mouth... The prices are excellent, and they load your plate up so you have leftovers for later. The breakfast specials are a perfect representation of a good Mexican cocina. You'll find the good ole boys drinking their coffee here every morning. I read the reviews and rushed to get there before closing. I arrived 5 minutes before closing and they welcomed me in. I asked for a recommendation between the burrito, enchiladas, and the chimi. I went with the chimi. It was excellent and the service was pleasant and inviting. Coming from out of state, I'll make sure I visit again when driving from San Antonio to Austin. read more

What a great surprise! The food was amazing! There are so many Mexican food places around, you never really know what you're going to get. The food was fantastic! I was going there a lot then the food was getting worse and worse IE queso was watery the enchilada plates where coming out cold the cheese was not even melted this happened not only one time but in many different times even the salaza was getting watery.but I have to say the carne guisada was good thing,the rice and beans need drastic helpand for a gringo to say this it is bad when i first went there the food was great and now it needs help this happens to a lot of restaurants. read more

I have been coming here for years. It's the absolute best Mexican place in town (depending who you ask) Portions are just right for the price paid and they don't skimp you on the margaritas as some other places do. Garcias messed up my orders so I stopped going there and Helens Casa Alde isn't always open when I'm passing through. OVERALL Chavelos has out of this world enchiladas and all of them are worth a try. The chips and salsa are exactly the same with each visit. Staying in the Comfort Suites, not much by way of dinner round these parts of a Monday evening so off the husband and BIL went. Chicken fajitas, beef fajitas, beef tacos and a burrito between 4 of us. With more chips and queso than you can shake a stick at, the queso was thick, congealed and meh. The fajitas were the same, only 2 tortillas with the meals, meat was poor quality and the "add ins" were all shoved in one messy tub. The beef tacos however were excellent, the taco meat was full of flavour. $30 a couple, and it was just ok. read more

Went there this evening for my hubby's bday with my parents and some friends. Overall, really great experience (we were first timers). Loves: brisket, carne guisada, chimi, frozen rita (not so much rocks), Chavelo himself (yes, we talked to him - very kind man), their birthday singing (best we've EVER seen), reasonable prices Not love as much: salsa could have had some spicy-ness (tasted great though, I just prefer something that burns a bit), parking lot (more like a landing pad), servers were really nice but not as attentive as we usually prefer (as I said, except for Chavelo), universal bathroom (ick). This is NOT a fancy schmancy place. Don't expect that. Expect really great stuff for under $10 per person. And go for your birthday - real special treat! read more

Beans and potatoes were just right on the machacada plate and the dish was delicious. Too much for me to eat! Service was friendly and prompt. Coffee wasn't the best but still good enough! Any other time of day I would be trying the margaritas anyway! Parking lot was full when we arrived at 9:30 on Sunday morning but we still found a spot. Nice outdoor patio. While we were in Buda for a work conference for my hubby we had a craving for good Mexican food and according to reviews Chavelos is where we needed to go. We found the place easily by GPS and found a spot close to the front since they weren't that busy. We were quickly seated and our drinks orders were taken. We both got margaritas on the rocks which came fast. I was a little disappointed they weren't stronger especially how small they were for $5 and we had just missed happy hour. We switched to Bud Light after which was better for the price. I ordered the beef fajita nachos and was very pleased. It came with all the toppings you would expect for a good order of nachos: beef, cheese, refried beans, sour cream, tomatoes, jalapeños and guacamole. Hubby got the chimichanga and was pleased with how it turned out and cleaned his plate. We would have gotten the sopapillas but we were so full I could not fit anything else. Thanks to Ricardo for his good service. Also, thanks to the hostess (who I really wish I had gotten her name) for seating us and getting our drinks to us so quickly. You could tell she paid attention too because the way she talked to some of the other returning customers she remembered them. We will be back here especially since we got better service here than we did when we tried lunch at the other Mexican restaurant in town. read more

The breakfast tacos here are heavenly. If they weren't so fattening, I'd have them every day. The service is spot-on, and if you're not into the giant breakfast tacos, then you can't really go wrong picking something else off the menu. I went with my daughter and to start we had chips and queso. The queso needs an upgrade big time. It was very watery and has little to no taste. I ordered the fajitas since I went with a big appetite and let me tell you.. STAY AWAY. The fajitas already looked a little weird, but I still tried them. As I took the first bite, I regretted coming to this place. It was so disgusting It was worst than taco bell. The tortillas tasted from HEB and the rice tasted like.. crap. No taste at all actually. I had to ask for extra napkins bc I was only provided with one, and also extra silverware. Not coming back. Not to mention I got the bill and for me and my duaghter it came out to $21. Food is good but service is lacking. We have been here several times - male staff are inattentive. We had to get our own silverware, they offered more salsa but never delivered. Two male staff stood chatting with cook instead of taking care of customers. Previous visit they had a young kid (12 yrs old?) working. We are historically 20-25% tippers but can not justify anything with the level of service. But the food is good! read more

Everybody is very friendly and I come here once every couple of weeks! I have tried a lot of things here but its all not that great. EXCEPT for the Skillet, Salsa and Horchata! I got Horchata at Casa Alde and spit it out but Chavelos makes it PERFECT! I could eat the salsa all day here! And the BEST thing here is the Skillet--A big oval skillet with pico de gallo and potatoes on the bottom then covered with a giant chicken fried steak following with 2 over easy eggs and Texas toast on the edges. Then you get the giant bowl of gravy and dump the whole thing on top with some spoon full's of salsa and a little salt/pepper!!! AMAZING!!!! read more
