Buda is blessed with some very good Mexican food restaurants. My current favorite is Chavelo's. Wonderful service, great location, nice outdoor area under a giant tree. There are three really good Mexican restaurants in Buda: Garcia's, Casa Alde, and Chavelo's. They each have their strengths and any are worth a try. The food and service at Chavelo's are excellent, and the location is in old downtown Buda. Has a nice hometown feel. read more

If you have taste buds, avoid at all cost!!Disappointed doesn't even begin to describe my experience at this restaurant. Coming in from out of town, I read reviews here and decided to give it a shot. Parking is a disaster. There are only 10 tables in the whole place, and being there was some empty should have been a clue. Anyone who uses the word "authentic" to describe Chevalos is flat out lying. No way in hell this place is authentic. Our waiter never once cracked a smile or even halfway remotely appeared to care about life, much less anything else. We ordered our food and it came back to the table in less than 3 minutes...no joke. I love fast service, but food to the table that fast says alot. My husband ordered beef fajitas, which were absolutely disgusting. So tough and gamey tasting..I honestly do not think it was beef. I ordered enchiladas...one chicken, two cheese. Chicken was so dry and idk what cheese they use, but they should strongly consider something else. Rice and beans were nothing to write home about either. The only thing they have going for them is halfass decent margaritas and salsa. Their sign says, "Best Mexican Food in Town". Chavelos is an excellent and inexpensive Mexican restaurant. Family owned with great food and prompt friendly service. Try the shredded brisket for lunch or the machacado plate for a different take on breakfast. They've recently begun serving beer and margaritas. read more

Just moved to Buda from Austin about 5 months ago and were looking for a decent restaurant in the town. We ended up at Chevalos and have been back at least 5 times! The queso could use some flavor but LITERALLY everything else tastes amazing! My husband is Spanish and likes some (okay, maybe a lot of) heat/flavor to his food. Anytime I ask where we should go out for a quick/affordable meal, we head to Chevalos. They have great drink prices as well. Don't expect to come to a big, chain-like restaurant. I found the local flavor and appeal to be quite good. Not the best I've ever had but worth the trip. The Farah guacamole was a highlight. I've eaten lunch at Chavelo's twice. Both times I was more than happy with my meal and had leftovers for a later snack. I don't remember for sure, but I think I was on a Carne Guisada kick the first time I visited. Whatever I had I do remember that it was good. This time I had a Chili Relleno dinner...ala picadillo. It came with an outstanding guacamole salad, rice and beans. Chips were light and crisp. I asked for salsa verde, expecting a jalapeno salsa, and instead they brought out an habanero concoction that was amazing. I highly recommend it. Yes, as other reviewers have commented, the parking leaves a bit to be desired. Yes, the indoor seating area is kind of small. As far as I'm concerned though the great food makes it more than worth any irritation those minor details might cause you. My experience with the wait staff was excellent. My appreciation for the food; price, quantity served, freshness and flavor-wise puts it way up on my list of favorite eateries. I recommend it without reservation. BTW, I don't ever give 5 stars...but if I could I'd give Chavelo's a 4+. They're definitely better than just good. read more

My husband and I decided to try out this "Chavelo's" place after church today since we pass by it pretty often. So we are currently here and here is how we feel-- We walked in and were greeted by friendly faces. It wasn't super packed and we were able to sit wherever we liked. We chose to sit in the center in front of 2 TVs since the Cowboys v. Rams game was on. It's awesome that we could enjoy the football game while eating lunch. :) The place has a nice, comfortable and welcoming feel to it. You got some light Latin music playing in the background-- pretty relaxing especially with the quiet environment! ;) We didn't have a long wait at all for anything! Our waiter was polite and served us our Sweet Teas and Chips and salsa plus we ordered chile con queso. The Sweet Tea was pretty good (not too sweet; just right for me). Chips were amazing! I really love the texture (very fresh, light, a little puffy and crunchy). The queso isn't as thick as what you may be used to, but honestly I prefer it more on the semi thick/watery side. :) I ordered the "Shredded Brisket Plate" ($6.99-- Served with rice, beans, pico, guacmole and 2 corn or flour tortillas) and my husband tried the small bowl of Menudo ($5.99-- Served with side of limes, cilantro, onion + corn or flour tortillas). Our food was out within 5-10 minutes!! :) The food looked great! Plus, there was a pretty good amount of food! Now let me tell you!-- When I took my first bite, the food tasted amazing! The brisket was very juicy and tender! I loved the combination of flavors! I loved the tender onions and tomatoes mixed in the brisket! Absolutely delicious! The rice and beans were also great! They weren't too bland and went well with the delicious brisket! They did serve some guacamole on shredded lettuce + some pico de gallo on the side as well and the pico de gallo really enhanced the taste to the brisket! I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to spicy food so for those who are like me and just like a "kick" of spicy, it's perfect until you bite into a super spicy piece of chili!! So be careful to not quickly attack the delicious food like I did! (LOL) The guacamole was creamy and yummy too! It didn't have chunks of onions or anything in it so to me it was great because that sometimes becomes overpowering! I didn't get to try the tortillas but they looked good and warm. Now for my husband's thoughts on the Menudo-- He says it was not spicy at all and didn't have a "kick" to it from what he's used to (El Paso, Texas home-made from Momma style served with toasted bread with butter spreaded on top-- Mmm)! He said it could use a little more flavor. I asked him if it had hominy in it and he said he didn't think about it then and he doesn't think it did; just the meat. Overall, he says it's decent Menudo. The waiter was excellent and wasn't pushy. He occasionally asked how we were doing and if we needed anything. I really enjoyed the food and service! The food was affordable and the place is conveniently close to home and easy to find! I would definitely like to come back again real soon!! ;) ;) I'm really happy we tried this place out because when it comes to Mexican food, we sure are picky! We've tried many places near the area and so far this place and Los Vega (in Kyle, Texas) have been the best! Hope you all have as much of a wonderful experience as I did! read more

Boy does this place suck. This is not authentic. Food taste like it's from Wal-Mart especially the cheese. Waiters couldn't care less or crack a smile. For a Dr pepper I received a hot 12 oz can. And for oj my mom received crappy orange flavored tang. Breakfast is not good. Not worth the price. Carne guisada tastes like dog food. People really think this is One of the best places in Buda? Hint- go down a little further on main street there are a couple more restaurants that will more likely b better. read more

Great place, good food and great customer service. Margaritas are fantastic (wish I had the machine they have!). We've been there dozens of times, never had anything we didn't like ... save room for dessert. Chavelo recommended the fried ice cream WITH the Sopapilla ... I have found heaven. A frosty margarita and this dessert. He might need to add a treadmill to the back to allow us to work off some of those calories, though. BTW, Chavelo himself is a great marketer for his place, greets everyone, makes you feel welcome and appreciated for your business. read more

We came for breakfast on Saturday around 11am. The food was pretty good, not the best, but not bad. The portions were weird. Plenty of eggs but then a tablespoon of beans. The problem was the service was horrible! Our waiter forgot about us outside multiple times and had trouble with our order, which was not complicated. And they were not busy. This place is probably the most authentic Mexican food in buda. But it's small. And parking here is ridiculous. In a bad way. It took me 5 tries before I finally got a parking spot less than 3 blocks away and decided to eat here. I was beyond impressed with the food. The waitstaff is moderately unprofessional. We were greeted by someone sitting down at a staff group table eating chips and salsa. Immediately after sitting us, she went back to sitting beside us at the employee table. (This was 1215pm on a Sunday) Our waitress soon joined their table and hey, no big deal if your tables are satisfied. But my coffee was empty for 10 minutes longer than it needed to be. The carne guisada plate was great. Migas tambien. And huevos rancheros is spot on. I think the wait staff needs a little training on etiquette. We salute the kitchen staff for their authentic appeal, and we thank ownership for the price fairness. You will get what you pay for in terms of proportion. read more

This place sucks. I would not send my enemies here. The flavoring is bland, like a patio dinner. the lettuce, tomatoes, etc. are not fresh. Portions are small, and seating is terrible. They wipe down the tables with a smelly rag that leaves the odor for you to enjoy with your meal. We ate there ONCE, and swore we would never go back. Go around the corner to Garcias.
