Food was fine, we're from LA so potentially a bit pickier on that front but her service and the aperol spritz made up for it! The manger, think his name was thomas, was super rude and before we even sat down he was asking the group what they were doing there (at our table) while I was waiting for 5 minutes to check in at the hostess stand with a rude tone and attitude. I did not arrive expecting great food, I expected a great venue. My expectations were met: asked for extra EXTRA mushrooms on my omelette. Meh, seemed the request was ignored. Maybe there was a mushroom shortage in the kitchen. Also, side of fruit consisted of melon that appeared to have been cut a few days ago. Chef is Lazy and has sloppy management over the kitchen: A common ailment for establishments that can depend on the scenery for business. This was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had at a restaurant. The food and the service were excellent. The flapjacks and sides were very tasty and plentiful. The coffee was the best we've had on our visit to Colorado. Simon was the perfect server: attentive, but not overbearing. The setting was beautiful, made even more magnificent by the fall foliage. That being said, I found it off-putting that we were charged by the cup for coffee and extra for oat milk. $22 for 3 cups of coffee and refills and $9 for a tiny pitcher of oat milk. The amazing restaurant recommended by a friend is a National Historic Site. It has a rustic feel with a beautiful fireplace and stellar mountain views. It is the site of an educational retreat originally created for educators from Texas to get away from the heat in the summer time. It is located next to a gorgeous park and trails. It also has 99 cabins on the extensive property for rustic weddings, hikers and vacationers. Brunch was superb! I had coffee, an elk chorizo Benedict with hash browns and my friend had french toast with fresh berries. Both were served in cast iron skillets. It was delicious! read more

I tried to book a reservation during graduation weekend but the website said that they do not take any reservations for Saturday or Sunday brunch. It was a bit chilly outside, especially for my elderly grandfather so when we asked to sit inside, they told us that inside was only reserved for reservations. We ended up sitting outside for a bit but then asked to be moved inside anyways. One of the staff approached us and very sassily told us to "grab our things" and follow him, like we were the most inconvenient customers. There were SO MANY open tables inside not being used and we got crammed into a tiny table. The website said nothing about "holiday" reservations so make sure to inquire first. Also I must say, the chicken and waffles was so good but the portion was extremely confusing. It was a full waffle with one chicken finger on top. read more

Great food, great views but frustratingly inept front-of-house staff. We made a reservation for 12:45 for two people. Arriving on-time, the hostess says she is having "difficulty" with the system which is a diplomatic way of saying our reservation was lost despite us having a confirmation email. We are told to wait 15 mins and put our names in the queue and received a text message. Ok. After 20 mins, the link sent to us from the reservation system says our place in line has been cancelled by host. What the heck?? We approch the front of house again and ask to know the problem. After waiting again, another 15 mins we are finally seated. If you'd like to wait 35 mins for table WITH a reservation, by all means, dine here. Cute, cozy spot with a great HH! How can you go wrong with $3.50 wine?? We started out with apps-Mac and cheese balls, fried green tomatoes, and Brussels sprouts. All were good. The beet/squash flatbread looked a lot more like a little pizza to me, but it was amazing. I was stuffed but still ordered the cobbler for dessert-no regrets! Unfortunately others in my party had items that were not as great...might be a bit hit or miss here based on what you order. Ava was a terrible waitress. Ate there night of CU graduation with a party of 8 that I made a reservation for months ago, where they should have their best staff on. She didn't know anything about the menu, constantly forgot silverware / any small asks. This was such a disappointment for what should have been a lovely afternoon. We took my parents here during Parent's weekend. My son attends CU so it was grandparents, parents and kids. After reading reviews it seemed that the restaurant should be pretty good. Due to parent's weekend I thought it would be really busy so I called to make a reservation. No answer and no return phone call for my two messages inquiring about a reservation. We showed up thinking it would be busy, but the dining room was empty except for one table. There were 8 of us and sadly NONE of our meals was good. Soup cold and flavorless, black bean burger burned, steak sandwich burned, buffalo chicken sandwich way over-fried and came without coleslaw. Even the fries were burned yet cold. Basically nothing was good. Additionally, even though there was no one in the dining room, the service was terrible. I like Yelp's explanation for two stars - it fits perfectly here. Just "Meh. I've experienced better." Five of us had dinner at the Dining Hall before seeing John Lithgow in the Auditorium last night - great location for that, by the way, seeing as how it's only about 50 feet away from the Auditorium entrance. Well, that was a good thing. The service was extremely slow. It took about 50 minutes for our entrees to arrive. We had to ask for bread several times before it arrived. Same with refills on drinks - they just never came. At one point, someone (manager, perhaps) who was not waiting on our table came over to apologize for the wait. Well, when the food finally came, we were all underwhelmed. Orders were brought out wrong, but we had so little time left there was no time to correct the situation. Some orders were already cold. When the server set down one plate (with strange looking, unwanted chicken added to an beet salad), he said "I don't know why they did that," but didn't ask if the addition was okay. Good thing she isn't a vegetarian, I guess. I got a boring old hamburger, but kind of lost my appetite when it was set in front of me (picture included). The lettuce was brown and the burger looked incredibly dry. I had also asked for fruit, not fries, but you can see what I was served. They did bring some fruit on the side (blech. Stick with the fries). To their credit, they did remove one entree from the bill and a full 20% off what remained, which we appreciated. But, based on the service and the quality of the food, I probably wouldn't go back. On the up-side, the surroundings are absolutely beautiful. read more

Update: I went back to the Dining Hall again and had such a better food experience this time around. The waiter was over the top kind to my party (even giving us a complimentary scoop of peanut butter ice cream which was SO good) and a discount on a gift shop item. I got the berry cobbler and it was perfect. I also tried the sweet potato soup which was really good. Giving it a 4 now to balance out my first food order and would definitely go back! ------------------------ I had heard amazing things from a good friend about the Dining Hall and while I absolutely loved the ambience (think: fireplaces throughout, rustic wooden bar, cozy lighting) and fabulous happy hour beer/wine menu, my food was... underwhelming. The apps were definitely good but I ordered the "pepperoni & caesar flatbread" which was described as "pepperoni, marinara, mozzarella and Caesar salad." The Caesar felt truly like a salad on top of my flatbread, which left a very soggy, Caesar dressing-absorbed flatbread underneath. It wasn't terrible.. but I wouldn't recommend it. For dessert, I got the "s'mores brownie" which sounds delicious and looked equally pretty but was very dry and again, not terrible but just pretty underwhelming. Overall, I'd visit again and probably just try other items on the menu. After all, the ambience was spectacular and all of the staff were great - I'd definitely give it another chance. read more

It's always very pleasant to enjoy the wraparound porch of the Chautauqua Dining Hall before a concert or after a hike. I wish the food could match the beautiful setting though. Over the years, I've been to this restaurant mostly for the atmosphere, never impressed with the food for lunch, dinner or breakfast. My last visit was no better that the previous ones. We went for brunch before a hike and both my husband and I were less than impressed with the food. The menu is exciting, with interesting offering such as duck confit crêpes or croque madame. However, we kept things fairly simple and ordered eggs and potatoes. My husband got the basic, and asked for toast instead of the biscuit that comes with the plate. We were charged extra for that dry and sad piece of toast. It's not even about the money, simply not very customer friendly. My Tomato Basil Omelette was topped with a basil cream that made it unnecessarily heavy. Personally, I think tasty and fresh ingredients should be enough in an omelette, no need to hide flavors with a sauce. The potatoes are cut in big chunks and to me they are less flavorful that way. The biscuit and jam were the only part of breakfast I really liked. So, nice location (except for the difficult parking situation on weekends) but very average food. read more

Landed here early evening while sight seeing in Boulder with family members. The place is old but appears generally well maintained. Its nestled at the bottom of the scenic Flatirons and is part of a historic conference-center facility. It's like a lodge and offers dining on a wrap-around porch. The menu is fairly limited and I used Yelp reviews to zero in on a good sized bison burger with fries. Others in our group had the onion soup and beet salad. The food was flavorful and tasted fine. The service by Sierra was prompt and helpful. Prices seem a little "high" . . . but, it's Colorado, right? read more

Falls far short of its potential, but careful ordering can get you a decent meal. The hippy sandwich was very good, and usually I dislike kale. Chicken wings are decent. Big country salad is not bad. But a lot of the dishes just aren't worth ordering, which is baffling. Service was lousy. We were waiting for one of our party. After he arrived, our server disappeared for 20 minutes. As travelers from Maryland we love having a very warm and cozy feel in the winter. This Dining Hall gave us exactly that. As we walked through the door we were greeted promptly by the hostess who quickly found us a table at this local favorite. We sat down and were greeted by our waitress who quickly filled our glasses with water and took our drink order. We waited a good while to receive our drinks but that is the only bad thing I can say. We didn't mind as we were just enjoying the sights and sounds of the restaurant. The snow was falling and the fire place was roaring offering up a very cozy vibe. A few minutes later she brought out a hot chocolate and coffee which were both exceptional. Our waitress Corinne took our orders promptly and within about 15 minutes we received our food. We ordered the Biscuits and gravy with two over easy eggs and the cinnamon roll french toast. Both of these menu items or on my list of the best i've ever eaten in both categories. I was hesitant to try the restaurant as we are not locals and the name is a little off putting. I was convinced by my girlfriend that we need to try it as it was close to a trail we wanted to hike. We landed in Denver in the morning and headed to Boulder. We had a few hours before we were able to check into the place we were staying, so decided to do a little bit of hiking at Chautauqua.....that being said we hadn't eaten in about 8 hours, so we decided to check out Chautauqua Dining Hall. Hearing the term "Dining Hall" my husband was a little skeptical, but alas, based upon other reviews, I assured him all would be well. First of all, parking can be an issue. My husband and I parked out on the street near the Ranger Cottage (which was free Monday - Friday) and had to look around a bit for the Dining Hall. But, to be fair, there's a lot of people coming to hike and hang out in general at Chautauqua....and Boulder is known to be one of the best places to live if you like outdoor activities....so, you know, park down the street and walk. After all, you are at a place that is home to hiking. We arrived just around 11:30 (on a Monday) and were promptly seated out on the porch. We had a really nice view of the grounds. My husband ordered the Hall Burger with fries, and I selected the Salmon Burger with a salad. We stuck with water. The food came out relatively quickly....and my husband was pleasantly surprised with how much he liked the Hall Burger. It was cooked correctly and the fries were hot and seasoned well. Salmon Burgers (based off of my experiences) are a little bit harder to get right, but Chautauqua Dining Hall got it right. It was served with a small side salad, and small is right. It was smaller than most of the side salads that I have had served in place of fries, but I didn't mind the size. The salad only contained greens and had a very light dressing. The cost overall for the 2 "burgers" (w/out tip) was about $27. The server was pleasant and attentive. I'm not sure that if I lived in the area I would seek this place out for dinner or lunch. However, if I was looking to take someone to a place with a nice outdoor atmosphere for lunch, was visiting from out of town, or wanted to eat at a nice place before heading on a hike, then I would head here with out hesitation. read more

How can you be a somewhat alternative restaurant in Boulder and not offer alternatives to traditional breakfast meat? VERY disappointing. The veg tacos were not bad but not inspiring. Overall I cringe reading a menu with words that only the person who wrote it knows the meaning of...and they probably had to Google them. The worst was the 'simple salad.' What comes to mind when you think of such a thing? Is it a handful of lettuce in a small bowl with modest dressing? That's what this place defines it as. There were parties on the patio as well, of course, but the half of the restaurant we sat in had only 3 tables far apart and all the windows open. It felt very safe and the food as always was wonderful. To celebrate a long hike I had the Churro Waffle, which was crispy and fragile and very filling! Came as out of towners on a family visit for a Saturday breakfast and were pleasantly pleased. We had a peaceful table in an alcove with good service. Coffee was hot and good and I loved the biscuits and gravy with two poached eggs. The gravy was full of nice chunks of meat and had a perfect peppery kick. I hate it when there is non-visible meat in the sausage gravy! My mates flapjacks were declared as nothing special. Her poached eggs were perfectly done but had the hint of vinegar. Other plate of the omelette of the day with bacon, mozzarella, mushrooms and red peppers was good as were the roasted potatoes. The other entree of the burger was fair. Overall decent food for a pretty fair price. Loved walking around the grounds afterward. read more

The manager, I believe his name was Matt was incredibly rude. Additionally, he gave the impression that he was on cocaine. This place was awesome! We came after a lovely hike on a beautiful day and sat outside (quite picturesque). I got a really tasty bloody mary that was wonderfully flavorful, and the bistro bison burger (also tried a sip of the cappucino and it was v good). That burger was seriously an incredible burger - I finished every last bit and all of the crispy fries too! Would definitely recommend this place post-hike, or for any occasion really, everything on the menu seemed super appetizing and I'll definitely be back to try more and enjoy the scenic ambience! read more

Wine list was well curated and also relatively inexpensive. Service was also great and the location and ambience are world class. My friend recommended me this place while I was on my trip to CO. I almost didn't eat here because the wait was pretty long, but I stuck it out. I recommend making a reservation. I was able to eat outside which was really nice. They have a great view of the flat irons here. The food and service was good too!
