Based on the abundance of Chinese restaurants in the area, I would say that this place is certainly A-Okay. I went here a few weeks ago with a group of family friends and we ordered family style. While the food didn't blow me away, this was your typical family sit down restaurant. The food was flavorful and their service was great as well. This place does tend to get packed on the weekends so make sure you make a reservation if you have a large group. The XLB was okay, but I would rather go to Din Tai Fung the next shopping center over. 4 Stars I've been to Chang's Garden several times and each time the food has been great. This time the occasion was my aunt and uncles 70th birthday. We had a large table for ten near the front of the restaurant. My aunt ordered a variety of dishes, we started off with Beef and Maw Szechwan style, Yellow Fish Soup and Pork Spare Ribs wrapped in Lotus Leaf. All of these dishes were excellent. This was the first time I had the soup and it was awesome. The next group of dishes were the Lions Head soup, Lamb and Green Onion, Sauteed Mixed Vegetables, Sea Cucumber with Brown Sauce and the Green Bean in Chinese Pancake. Again each dish was great, the highlights were the Lamb and Green Beans in Chinese Pancake. The green bean dish is very similar to the beef rolls that are very popular everywhere, but this is vegetarian style. That's a lot of food right? Well weren't done. Next up was Fish Tail with Brown Sauce, Seaweed Fried Fish, Bamboo Fungus with Chinese Squash and Chinese Style Filet Mignon. I wish I could give zero star here. I have never seen any business would curse the customers. They were not happy and said something really bad only because we didn't tell them that we would pay by American Express card. Isn't their responsibility to ask if they have multiple systems to process the payment? It's just ridiculous. I would stay away from them. read more

Food was a hit. The sautéed mixed veges were cooked al dente, which was fantastic, the vegetables were fresh, and there were a few really nice pieces of garlic I found that were not too strong nor bitter. It was served steaming hot - just the way I love it! I took it home, had the leftovers 2 days later, and everything tasted fabulous. I would make 2 suggestions: maybe use less oil, and use more garlic. Still, really good! Tasted homemade. The Szechuan chicken was ok. We were told it was very spicy, but it wasn't. Could have handled a lot more spice. The other dish (I can't remember what it was) seemed to lack flavor and was too oily for my taste. Love the fact they include a pot of hot tea as soon as you sit down, only serve non-disposable chopsticks, and automatically serve very good steamed white rice. Bathrooms were very nice and clean. (Although there seemed to be a partially enclosed storage area in the men's bathroom - that was strange!) My only real complaint was the service. We dined at about 4 pm on a weekday, and once our food was served, we had to actually get up 3 times to request further service (water, extra napkins, etc). This place isn't Panda for sure. And by that, I mean mediocre fast food Americanized Chinese food with too much sugar. This place is authentic Chinese so if you prefer safe, Americanized Chinese (i.e. Orange Chicken) this might not be the place for you. But for me, I love this place. As an appetizer they serve boiled peanuts. So from the moment, you'll know this place is the real deal. I went with family and they talked about the fried fish with seaweed so we ordered that and a few other things.. mapo tofu with crab and some other dish. But all I can remember is the fish. It's a simple fried fish with a smoky salt to dip, but it's so good. At first, I thought, "eh, not bad" but I just kept wanting more. It's been a few weeks since I was there but all I can think about is that fish. Seriously, I'm going through withdrawals and can't wait to get more. You've been warned! Btw, this place can get busy so try to arrive before the dinner rush. Oh, but they get minus a star cause they've got to clean their bathrooms better. I came here with my partner and his dad, who recommended this place and was really excited to be here. Honestly, he is super fun to eat with and does no wrong and is a master at ordering just the right stuff. We were seated right away and were given tea (bag, not loose leaf if that matters) and menus. I just sat back and let boyfriend and dad take the lead, because in all honesty I am out of me element here. They were pretty optimistic at the eating ability of 3 people (mostly dad, it was so sweet) and we ordered: -jellyfish: crunchy and pickly and super good. -Madam Sung's fish chowder: like egg drop soup but with tender fish and ham in it. SO GOOD. -Tung to pork: SUPER tender, really flavorful. -seaweed flavored fried fish: This was really delicious. It was crispy on the outside and flavorful and soft in the center. What more could you ask for? The seasoning on the side is also really tasty. I love it, I wish I was eating it now. -green onion pancake (cong you bing): standard, but standard is delicious. Overall, it was really tasty. I have been wanting to try this place for a while now and finally got the opportunity to. All the food we ordered was very good and the portions were huge. We ordered the combination chow mein, shrimp fried rice and salt and pepper shrimp but after tasting our food we decided to order more dishes. We continued to order the sweet and sour fish, fish in black bean sauce and Mongolian beef along with the chili wontons and a order of potstickers. It was late YESTERDAY and noticed this place was lighten up and open up late, so I took our first date to here and hope the food was amazing. The place look big and nicely set-up as well. The costumers service in the beginning wasn't so great, probably because my date declined the peanuts that they offer in the beginning and had the server took it back. Although, we did kept the hot tea! I like when places offer warm tea than just iced water. And towards the ending, they kindly serve the Asian sweet beans soup desert (typically on the house after your main-course meals). But other than that, the service was good and kindly help us pack our left-over food for take-away, and also offer us rice to go that we decided to declined. I never had Shanghai's smoked half-duck, so it was quite interesting. Usually I have it with pancake if not with rice, but not this time, even though it was just the first taste out of the three taste if you guys are familiar with Beijing's three tastes for the duck's courses; I wasn't even expecting that, I thought the smoked duck would be serve on top of the rice. And I can tell you that for sure it was delicious and I was the one that spotted that out from the picture from the menu. My date chose the pork ribs, which was also delicious with the green cook veggies under it. We had our dinner as family style, which we was given steam white rice on the side for our meal, which prob comes with it regardless for this usual type of restaurant. Overall, the presentation of the food look awesome as it taste, which is always a plus to attract the costumers to keep coming back, or my case to bring my date back or to recommend others, even though it was pretty expensive; paid about $40 in total. That wasn't the best part of my night, when I had the leftover dinner on my kitchen's table, as I come back home from dropping my date off for the night, my older cousin ate all of it and thought his mom left him his dinner on the table. I was very pleased with this restaurant. The food was excellent - following the recommendations of previous reviewers we got the seaweed fried fish, the lotus leaf-wrapped spare ribs, and the Shangai style spare ribs. The fish and lotus leaf-wrapped ribs, in particular, were absolutely superb. What was especially appreciated, however, was the friendly service. I was there with my elderly, very white parents, who are not too familiar with authentic, non-Westernized Chinese food, and we were treated very well and the staff was very accommodating. This has not always been the case at other Arcadia Chinese restaurants we have been to. I'll be back the next time I fly out west to visit my parents. If you are from outta town and happen to walk by this place, you would think they must serve some good food because the place is packed. Came here because the wait at Din Tai Fung was over an hour, and I had a plane to catch. Now I'm starting to think this place might be packed from all the customers walking over from DTF because of the wait time. Anyways, this restaurant needs to rearrange their tables. It was the most awkward and uncomfortable seating arrangement. Tables are literally back to back, and then they have these random support columns throughout the restaurant. I understand columns are often unavoidable but they should not place a table directly in front of a column where the column is basically sitting at your table. The column was next to my shoulder, very strange. The tables are placed so close together you can barely push your chair back. Besides the uncomfortable ambiance, the food was bland. I was happy to see a lot of vegetarian options but none of them had any flavor. Everything was BLAND. They were so busy I couldn't even flag down a sever for some hot sauce. Maybe their target audience is seniors bc I would say 95% of the people eating there were over 65. So if you like flavorless food, this is the spot for you. read more

food is really good here. came here for family gathering during lunch special hours. we probably ordered 7 dishes and walked away happy, full without a hole in the wallet. i would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic shanghainese cuisine. -1 star not because the food wasn't good, but because we ordered the beef roll which smelled kind of bad and might have spoiled. understandable as the sliced beef needs to be marinated, sliced and kept in the fridge for serving (few days).. maybe it was out too long so it smelled funky but changs garden was made aware and they promptly took the dish away and did not charge us.. as a professional courtesy and good customer service, they provided red bean crepe for desert (free of charge). i am a food critic however i understand sometimes mistakes can be made and as human beings we need to be cognizant of what goes on in a busy chinese WOK kitchen. read more

We had take out for lunch today with my family and in laws to celebrate the moon festival together. The food was so delicious! The duck skin was very crispy and the meat was cooked perfectly. I've never eaten such tasty duck! All the other dishes were delicious too... beef roll, pepper steak/beef, sweet and sour chicken (infinitely better than I'm used to), and even the less common dishes (gluten, bean curd, and tofu... strange but tasty). I liked their dishes, small portions and more on the $$ side than the other similar places I have gone. It's not expensive. Six dishes would cost you in the $90 range. Originally i wanted to go to MAY MEI but the wait is long so me and my friend walked around and i saw this place and asked the server how long is the wait she told me that maybe 5 minutes cause someone is leaving already. So we ended up here instead of MAY MEI. So we ordered the ff: Pork wrapped in Lotus leaves-this is good tender pork nice flavor it has rice with it the only thing i didn't like is that its too oily....take off the oil i'll be here as often as i could just for this. Pork intestine and blood - I don't really know what the hell is the name of this dish but i loved it! The spiciness of the sauce plus the intestines in it and the blood... its so good...plus its served on a dish with a flame underneath so its boiling! Fried tofu with pork in spicy sauce-i always order tofu in chinese restaurants cause i love tofu! this dish is good too.. i can't say anything bad about it and the serving is big enough for 4 people. Deep fried Peking Duck-served with those soft buns and hoisin sauce. i love the texture of this dish put the duck inside the bun add some spring onions and hoisin sauce, oh heaven! well it's not really that great but its good! Steamed Chicken(cold dish)- we got this because this is one of my friends favorite but its a bit salty and i didn't like it but i enjoyed it in MAY MEI. This one is bleh! 4 out of 5 its pretty good.... but I would be more happy if i enjoy every dish! Definitely one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in SGV. It's tucked away in a shopping plaza just off the main road (Baldwin) that has plenty of parking. The variety here is awesome - so many delicious dishes that there is always something new to try each time we come. Also, the quality is consistent - we've been coming here for over 7 years, and the food today tastes the same (in terms of quality) as it did 7 years ago. Some of our favorites include: Clam with winter melon soup, green bean in Chinese pancake, green onion pancake, cold pork Shanghai style, and Shanghai style rice cakes. I'm sure I'm forgetting others. Update 8/10/17: We came back (again) three weeks ago for a family gathering, and pre-ordered the Beggar's Chicken. My god, it was one of the best chicken dishes I've eaten in a really long time. Definitely worth ordering (in advance) if you make reservations. read more

ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE TO HAVE TERMITES RUNNING A RESTAURANT. I went there last night with my boyfriend and two friends, and we were ushered to one table. There was a termite on it. One of those over-grown ants with wings. We stood there, didn't sit and pointed at it, and the staff ignored our blatant pointing out of the bug, and put dishes and cups on the table. The cup/dish set she put in front of me had a huge, black curly hair on it. We were trying to ask them if we could move to another table, and they ignored us, so we moved ourselves to a vacant one, 3 tables away. There, to our surprise, was another infestation. Their whole damned restaurant is infested with termites. We were too disgusted to want to sit and dine there, for fear of eating bugs (If I want protein, I'll get it another way). We just walked out, and the woman who sat us said outloud, "NO?!?" all quizzically and confused, and very very loudly for all patrons to hear. So I returned her question, in the same very very loud voice as she had, "No. Your place is bug infested", again, for all other patrons to hear. I was surprised those disgusting diners probably just ignored the bugs as compensation for saving $ at a cheap cafe. read more

I would give this a solid 3.5. my first try at "real" shanghainese. we probably didn't order the best dishes but we didnt know better so here I go... green onion pie- i.e. scallion pancakes. good, not great. bit more doughy and thick than I like. I like my scallion pancakes crisp and H.O.T. these were very warm. still better than kam hong's, not as good as anything Ive had in nyc's chinatown. shanghainese beef noodle soup- yeah they're probably not known for this but I was still craving beef noodle soup. the broth was just alright and forgettable. the noodles were decent (better than kingburg) but nowhere near kam hong. the beef wasnt too bad. better quality than kam hong but not nearly good as kingburg. overall, a mediocre bowl of beef noodle soup but wasn't expecting much. stirfried leek and lamb- first time ordering lamb at a chinese joint and it wasnt bad. u can taste the slight gaminess but was it okay. I liked the leeks in it. wasn't a bad meal but I probably won't be returning. it was just a-ok, indeed. read more

Chang's Garden was a pleasant surprise. We weren't sure what to expect since Chang's doesn't have many reviews and a relatively average score of 3.5 stars. However, the food is delish, the prices reasonable, service decent, and crowds large after 7pm. I highly recommend the spare ribs with spinach, the chicken cream corn soup, and chicken with garlic sauce. The oolong tea at Chang's is pretty darn good and they have a banquet room for parties. I was also impressed that Chang's had pretty good wine - Gnarly Head. This is usually a $10 bottle of wine in the stores and they have a nice Chard although most folks prefer their Zin. Seating is plentiful at Chang's and they have a nice mix of 2, 4, and 8 seat tables to choose from. Go for the booths to get the pleasant window views. Parking at the plaza is sort of tough so go early if possible. read more

I'm on a Jiangsu/Zhejiang cuisine exploratory mission in the SGV, and Chang's Garden was the third stop on my list, after Long Xing Ji and Mei Long Village. Chang's stands out for being slightly swankier than your average Chinese hole-in-the-wall eatery...as in they had booths and un-papered walls! We got here early on a Saturday and were seated right away, but as families trickled in, the lazy Susan tables filled up and it was pretty bumpin' by 7pm. Our dishes, preceded by a complementary peanut amuse bouche (xiao3 chi1) and tea, came out quickly one after another. 178. SPICY BRAISED BEEF NOODLE SOUP: I had a mad BNS craving, and this hit the spot. I requested this non-spicy to avoid the layer of chili oil that typically just gets dumped on top for spicy flavoring at Eastern Chinese places. The beef was tender, not very tendony, accompanied by baby bok choy. The mildly oily broth wasn't the best I've ever had, but a rich enough rendition. 77. FISH HEAD WARM POT: I ordered this with salt instead of soy sauce, and spicy, and only the prior request was honored. I think I was too busy being in awe at the size of the dish to send it back. This comes in a casserole pot of the size of which I can best compare to the Pensieve in Harry Potter, filled with napa cabbage, semi-firm tofu, bamboo, flat mung bean noodles, and of course, half of a giant fish head and collar in a clearish, whitish broth. Very comparable in format to the version at Mei Long but much less rich, which you could taste in the broth. Not sure what variety fish it was, but nothing particularly fatty. What was interesting though is that the fish was deep fried before being added to the soup, which I could tell from the wrinkly skin--surprisingly tasty even in its soggy state. Not the best fish dish I've ever had, but it tasted fresh and the meat was tender, and I haven't yet met a fish head I didn't enjoy. There was, however, an issue of underseasning, which I solved by dragging my fish through the sauce for the spare ribs. 94. SPARE RIBS IN SHANGHAI STYLE: Bony but tasty, with a sauce sweetness level between that of Long Xing Ji's and Mei Long Villages. That is, medium sweet, not too vinegary. A tasty sauce. Meat wasn't fall-off-the-bone tender, because this is a cuisine where the eaters enjoy gnawing on the bones. It just tastes better if you have to work for it. We ordered 3 dishes to go, which were well-packaged and brought out with our check: 96. SWEET & SOUR PORK CHOP 97. SPARE RIBS IN SPECIAL BROWN SAUCE 170. FISH WITH WESTLAKE STYLE Enjoyable meal, but for me, the food fell short of what I experienced at Long Xing Ji. I know I was supposed to order the seaweed fried fish and the lotus leaf-wrapped pork ribs, but that's just not what I came here for, okay? This place is totally somewhere you go with family: it's loud and crowded and full of middle-aged Asians. They try to cram as many people in as possible so the aisles are always half blocked and when you push your chair back, you hit someone else's behind you. Other than that, the dong-po meat, fish maw soup, sauteed shrimp, seaweed crusted fried fish, fried stringy rolls and fried soft tofu (sooo good with a garlic dipping sauce) are recommended dishes. Their peking duck is also good but I hear that they order it from somewhere else so quantities are limited. If you like it, call ahead for reservations and have them hold one for you. Everything is definitely a bit on the oily side though. But also this place has funny memories - it used to be a fish restaurant called Opakapaka a long time ago and I was a hostess for two months. I know every store's prices are subject to change, but please don't use ridiculously reasons to change. Just put a banner outside your window says 'We apologize for not serving lunch from Dec 25 - Jan 1", that's just fine with me. Dec 29, in which country is a holiday?! Based on a NY times food review, Chang's Garden is one of the best Chinese restaurants to go to in the LA area. Well, I concur, and I hope that you try it too. Now do I know how to guide you in terms of ordering in English, no. However, is it good? Yes. There are several dishes that I would recommend, but rather than give you an English translation, I will tell you that there are lines of people waiting to be seated here, which is a sure sign that you should come to this place to eat. The food is wonderful: fatty pork, vegetables, chicken, vegetables, hot and soup soup, etc. I am a fan and I hope that you will give it a chance. Just don't stay too long because they will ask you to leave because of the line no matter what time. Also if you order to go, make sure they give you the right change because once I gave a larger bill than they had expected and they didn't give me accurate change. Shanghainese food is a favorite in my family so we eat it quite often. We've been eating at Chang's Garden for as long as I can remember. Some dishes we always get include: Seaweed Fish, Shanghai Style Pork Ribs, Shanghai Rice Cakes, Beef Roll, Green Onion Pancake and etc. As with many Chinese cuisine, it's always family style so you get to try a little bit of everything. The food can be a tad oily to some people but I have admit many Chinese cuisines are greasy so maybe I'm use to it. If you come here, just stick to getting Shanghainese dishes!
