Amidst our OR coast vacation dining experience, my family and I decided to take a break from seafood and go for a plain ol' sandwich. Our expectations were not high -- we were just cold, hungry, and needed some sustenance at an ordinary restaurant in between souvenir shopping stops. Our first clue that our experience was not going to be ordinary was the decor -- what an interesting looking and inviting place, with a way cool mural on the wall, custom-made tables with gorgeous inlays, and an abundance of tasteful items and photos adorning the interior. The staff all wore tie dyed outfits and were very welcoming. I wish I had thought to take photos of our food, because the dishes were amongst the best we've ever had and I would have loved to have posted images of what they looked like for this review. I ended up having the quiche, and my wife and mother-in-law split the philly cheese steak sandwich. Wow! I had to steal a bite of the sandwich, which was generously stuffed with slices of ribeye steak, green and red peppers, and cheese. I am trying to improve upon my own quiche recipe, so I had to have theirs. It was the best quiche I've ever had. I had all sorts of questions on how Chalkboard's quiche was made, and the owner/chef Ken came out and gave me all sorts of pointers on his quiche prep. It turns out that Ken has formal training as a chef and decades of experience in high end restaurants. Preparing the Chalkboard menu items constitutes a very, very small percentage of Ken's culinary skill set, and quite frankly is child's play for him; however, focusing on that comparatively narrow menu allows Chalkboard to deliver food that is consistent and of superior quality. I need to come back to the decor and outfits. Ken's wife and Chalkboard co-owner Angela painted the large mural on the wall, and her son made the beautiful inlaid tables. Ken makes all the tie dyed outfits worn by the staff, and the tie dyed t-shirts and aprons are for sale in the store. I love that Ken and Angela have poured so much of their versatile artistry into this establishment. Overall, what started as a simple meal amidst sightseeing turned out to be the highlight of our day. We will be returning to sample more of Ken's cooking, and to see our new friends before we leave. read more

A lot of bang for the buck here. We just had a Saturday evening dinner and enjoyed generous enrtrees with fresh ingredents featuring scratch recipes. The cheese steak sandwich was heaped and loaded with goodness. A "side" is included and the maccaroni salad was delicious. The prices were very reasonable = unlike most of the local restaurants that cater to tourists. I have had breakfast here too. Again no shortcuts. The bakery offerings are second to none. read more

We had breakfast and lunch. Both were outstanding. Portions are generous but the quality is what stands out. The ribeye used for my sandwich was seasoned well and not fatty. Happy to have found this cute little cafe on a side street off the promenade. My ham and egg breakfast sandwich was delicious and I was surprised and impressed with the thick slab of ham in it. My friend had a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit and said it was the best biscuit she's ever eaten. The Food is pretty good, but the grumpy guy cooking(owner) is a total jerk. We ate there a couple times when it was empty and service was somewhat friendly. Went there when it was a bit busy and the staff was absolutely abhorrent. Not because it took it forever and a day for the food. It was the way they treated customers and workers which was absolutely jaw droppingly awful. We understand you are busy, but that does not make it ok to snap at customers and employees! The owners put on a nice face , but they are hostile and rude. Not genuinely friendly and they are NOT LOCALS like they claim... they just moved here and bring with them a terrible demeanor!.. Particularly the guy cooking.. A real first class jerk! He treats his staff, delivery drivers and customers terribly. The lady with the southern accent was rude too. She usually puts on a nice act, but wow, not when they have more than one or two tables..not so much. Our community does not need to be treated like this. It might be a little tough to find if it's your first time, just look for the sign on the sidewalk, it's along the west side of the building even though maps shows it roadside. We were able to walk there from our hotel and had some fun watching the ducks fish in the river. Great food, great service, would go again when we're in Seaside again. read more

I could not have asked for a more welcoming experience in this comfy, low-key little joint. The decor evokes an old-fashioned hippie coffee shop, heavy on the tie-dye, with brightly painted murals and a veritable jungle in the front window. The owners are down to earth and very friendly. I had the Seaside Philadelphia Experiment, their decidedly untraditional take on a Philly cheesesteak. It was a big, glorious mess; sloppy and delicious, in a great roll that didn't stand a chance of containing the thick slabs of meat and gooey Whiz. (You can get it with regular cheese as well, which I assume makes the whole thing a little more manageable, but why bother?) They also serve breakfast all day; I can't wait to go back and try it next time I'm in town. This place is a gem. read more
