Have you ever gone to the Pig and Pancake and ordered a $16 plate of slop, wolfed it down, and then said, "Oh God, what have I done?" Yeah, me too. That's why I've decided to stop hurting myself and go to the Chalkboard Cafe instead. The difference in quality of ingredients and cooking is apparent in the first bite. It really is a bit jarring. This restaurant makes everything from scratch, and I mean everything. Yesterday my son and I got two burgers and our potato salad and coleslaw sides were like sides my mother would make in her kitchen, not globs of shelf stable Reser's food-paste that were made two states over a month ago and sprayed with mortuary chemicals to stop their decay. The food at the Chalkboard is real food, not fake food, which brings me to my next point, dietary restrictions. If I had any dietary restrictions whatsoever, gluten sensitivity in particular, this would be where I would go for breakfast or lunch in Seaside. Chalkboard has gluten free biscuits and gravy available, delicious GF naan bread made by hand, and gluten free versions of popular bakery goods made in their small kitchen from scratch. Even if you don't have restrictions you can be assured that your meal will have 80% less total ingredients just based on the restaurant's ethics alone. They aren't taking shortcuts, they aren't bringing junk into the building in the first place, so junk never ends up on your plate. The service is stellar, the ambiance is charming and clean. This place needs ventilation very badly. You will walk out of there smelling like the smoke from a busy kitchen. The soda bagel thing is over rated. I liked the airy texture. But I didn't care too much for the flavor. Genuinely not good. And the cream cheese it came with, zero flavor, which was easily remedied by adding my own salt. Super nice time here eating brunch. Staff are kind and fun. The food is all made from scratch, and local! I really enjoyed my Crab Swiss Asparagus Quiche. Affordable pricing and tons of good options to choose from. Blueberry pancakes, self serve coffee, and HUGE biscuits! It's a really cozy spot and I love how some of the stuff around is interactive - the tables are really cool and you can draw with the chalk on them. This is a gluten free GEM. The type of restaurant that after ordering, you turn your head when they bring out someone else's food, over and over again. They are the perfect amount of hidden-well. They have so many options, GF or not, sweet or savory. Also, side note, I LOVE when I see a trainer train with care, the man taking my order was his first day, and the trainer did an excellent job coaching him. My husband and I escaped Portland for a chilly Monday to the coast. Because my husband loves Philly Cheesesteaks, so this was a must-try. Tucked away off the main drag along the river, this place is a true hidden gem. Even though it was a Monday, it was surprisingly busy, but we were lucky enough to snag a table near the counter (sadly, not a chalkboard table!). My husband ordered his Philly and I opted for the French Dip, and both sandwiches were absolutely delicious! The fresh-baked bread is a huge plus. We also both got the macaroni salad for our side. That was quite good too. Next time I'm in Seaside, I simply must swing by to try more of their fresh baked goods. We chatted with the friendly owners and learned they've only been open for a year. We unexpectedly found ourselves having brunch here today. It was amazing. It's a charming café off Broadway, felt like a hidden treasure and we were the lucky ones. Our party had 3 adults, 2 preteens and a baby. The owner was very accommodating. He and the staff made us feel welcome and comfortable. The food was absolutely delish! Trust him when he says he makes a killer bloody mary, oh and go deluxe... caramelized pork belly with jalapeños? Yes, please! Highly recommend the Salmon Cakes Benedict Go, you won't regret it. Great local breakfast and lunch cafe in seaside just off the Main Street. Got breakfast here on our way out of seaside during our road trip and had a great experience. The food was good and the staff was super friendly. Stumbled on this gem during a quick trip to Seaside and will definitely be back. First and foremost, the staff is amazing and a big part of the experience. The lion share of ingredients are locally sourced or made from scratch. I had a chance to sample the quiche (breakfast served all day), biscuits and gravy (the biscuits are ridiculously good) and their Philly cheesesteak. Last year, I toured Philly in search of the best cheesesteak and this rivaled the best of them. Great bread (better than any of the others) and my added jalapeños sealed the perfection.
