We recently discovered the gem that is the Chalkboard Cafe. While staying in Seaside we were looking for a new breakfast spot and are glad that we happened upon the Chalkboard Cafe. Located near the end of a strip mall on Broadway on the Southeast side of the river, this tiny cafe and bakery serves up love and smiles. We were traveling with our two adult children who are on the autism spectrum. Our oldest is gluten free and our youngest, well he identifies as a bull moose and can be about as easy to wrangle. There were plenty of gluten free options for our oldest. Our server Zoe rocking the Wonder Woman tank was a super hero! The owner quickly tuned in to our family being on team quirky and made us feel welcome and at home. Everyone was so friendly! The food? Exceptional! This was our third breakfast out on our trip and the Chalkboard Cafe took the blue ribbon and it was not even close! My youngest had the biscuits and gravy, with a couple of eggs and a sausage patty. He's a charter member of the clean plate club and met the challenge. It was a generous portion. Our oldest had a half order of the B&G and was tempted to have one of the hot from the oven gluten free mini Marion berry pies that the owner proudly paraded around the dining room. Steaming from the oven this Marion berry pie tasted like the best of an Oregon summer. I was glad he shared a couple of bites. It was such a delight that we took a pie home for later! My wife and I shared the traditional eggs Benedict. The eggs were perfectly poached, and topped with a thick piece of ham grounded with their perfect English muffin. The Hollandaise was rich and creamy providing a wonderful coat on top of the egg. Their red potatoes were seasoned just right and were a compliment to the eggs Benedict as they would compliment most any savory breakfast. In addition to the pie we took home a couple their chocolate krinkle cookies which were not gluten free. That's the bad news. The good news is that we did not have to share them! They were heavenly! We get to Seaside at least once or twice a year and the Chalkboard Cafe will be part of our regular dining rotation while visiting. Thanks for the love and excellence! This place needs ventilation very badly. You will walk out of there smelling like the smoke from a busy kitchen. The soda bagel thing is over rated. I liked the airy texture. But I didn't care too much for the flavor. Genuinely not good. And the cream cheese it came with, zero flavor, which was easily remedied by adding my own salt. The ambience and decor was quaintly charming, at first. But the more I looked the more understood that everything was creepy. Like witchcraft creepy. read more

I have been coming to Seaside my whole life, but somehow I missed when this amazing place showed up! Visited for the first time and zero complaints! It was the waitresses second day and it seems both of us were excited about our find of a great place. Food choices were abundant and everything was fresh! It was quick too! Super nice time here eating brunch. Staff are kind and fun. The food is all made from scratch, and local! I really enjoyed my Crab Swiss Asparagus Quiche. Affordable pricing and tons of good options to choose from. Blueberry pancakes, self serve coffee, and HUGE biscuits! It's a really cozy spot and I love how some of the stuff around is interactive - the tables are really cool and you can draw with the chalk on them. Our experience honestly wasn't great and neither was the food. We walked in no one greeted us, I had to ask the woman at the counter if we could sit at a table that was empty. We sat at the table for about 15-20 minutes before I again had to ask her if we could order our food. Mind you she immediately went up to other people taking food orders that arrived way after us. Then an older gentleman was walking around with a tray of pastries that had just come out of the oven. We said we would love one he said okay great, showed the tray to some ladies sitting at a table. Immediately came back out of the kitchen with a pastry and walked right by us to give it to the ladies. Never came back with one for us. Our server never once checked on us or anything. Ladies road trip to the Seaside Oregon coast and while scrolling for food spots, we found Chalkboard Cafe because the biscuits looked AMAZING in the pictures... and they did not disappoint! We bought 2 to save for the next morning with butter and jam, and wow... soft, flaky, buttery deliciousness. We went back on our last day for breakfast and ordered the breakfast bowl with sausage & portabellas -- those mushrooms were SO good! Of course we had to get biscuits & gravy too. And yes... This is a gluten free GEM. The type of restaurant that after ordering, you turn your head when they bring out someone else's food, over and over again. They are the perfect amount of hidden-well. They have so many options, GF or not, sweet or savory. Also, side note, I LOVE when I see a trainer train with care, the man taking my order was his first day, and the trainer did an excellent job coaching him. My husband and I escaped Portland for a chilly Monday to the coast. Because my husband loves Philly Cheesesteaks, so this was a must-try. Tucked away off the main drag along the river, this place is a true hidden gem. Even though it was a Monday, it was surprisingly busy, but we were lucky enough to snag a table near the counter (sadly, not a chalkboard table!). My husband ordered his Philly and I opted for the French Dip, and both sandwiches were absolutely delicious! The fresh-baked bread is a huge plus. We also both got the macaroni salad for our side. That was quite good too. Next time I'm in Seaside, I simply must swing by to try more of their fresh baked goods. We chatted with the friendly owners and learned they've only been open for a year. Have you ever gone to the Pig and Pancake and ordered a $16 plate of slop, wolfed it down, and then said, "Oh God, what have I done?" Yeah, me too. That's why I've decided to stop hurting myself and go to the Chalkboard Cafe instead. The difference in quality of ingredients and cooking is apparent in the first bite. It really is a bit jarring. This restaurant makes everything from scratch, and I mean everything. Yesterday my son and I got two burgers and our potato salad and coleslaw sides were like sides my mother would make in her kitchen, not globs of shelf stable Reser's food-paste that were made two states over a month ago and sprayed with mortuary chemicals to stop their decay. The food at the Chalkboard is real food, not fake food, which brings me to my next point, dietary restrictions. If I had any dietary restrictions whatsoever, gluten sensitivity in particular, this would be where I would go for breakfast or lunch in Seaside. Chalkboard has gluten free biscuits and gravy available, delicious GF naan bread made by hand, and gluten free versions of popular bakery goods made in their small kitchen from scratch. Even if you don't have restrictions you can be assured that your meal will have 80% less total ingredients just based on the restaurant's ethics alone. They aren't taking shortcuts, they aren't bringing junk into the building in the first place, so junk never ends up on your plate. The service is stellar, the ambiance is charming and clean. You're out of excuses. You were wondering where you should go to eat, and now you know. Go to the restaurant where the locals take their own families - the Chalkboard Cafe. read more

Our party had 3 adults, 2 preteens and a baby. The owner was very accommodating. He and the staff made us feel welcome and comfortable. The food was absolutely delish! I guess if no other cafe is open this is convenient to most hotels. This is an old school cafe and unfortunately it smells like the cooking oil is original as well. That kind of ruins the vibe.
