HIDDEN GEM - I have met several people (including Unicorns = Native Austinite) who have no clue this place exists. Take a drive into the country in the middle of no where and you will find the Cele Store. Cele offers BBQ on weekends, live music and ice cold beer. They are a cash only establishments...but have an ATM on site. Check the website before you go. Typically they offer BBQ Fri and Sat, and a reservation is recommended. Seating is family style and they do not offer sides, so this is a BYOS (bring your own sides) type of place. BBQ is good (not great) but the natural seasoning from the pit is authentic Texas BBQ and the friendly staff and ambiance make it a 4 star. This was a set for the 2003 remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. [ Down in Bastrop, the original 1974 Gas Station was not available. Also, the original 1974 Round Rock house was moved in 1998 to Kingsland, TX, now an American eatery "Grand Central Cafe" ] Besides TCM 2003, the Cele Store has been used by Clint Eastwood & a few others for movie scenes. Now It is a Thurs thru Sat pit bbq eatery / bar with live country music as scheduled. No sides, I would guess they are building this up incrementally without extra staff for now. I came down here not knowing their limited schedule...So... I found my way over to Bastrop, the original Gas Station from 1974 TCM is rocking as "We Slaughter BBQ" and it is actually quite good, but a bit small menu but good at what they do. This one's gonna have a special place in our hearts. Went there for Saturday lunch. Our 4-year-old thought we were going to a haunted abandoned building, which upped the cool factor for him significantly. Warmly greeted by the owner, Don, and our lovely waitress. We ordered bottled beers and when you order water, that comes in a bottle, too. Took a while to take in the whole ambiance ... It's just one of those really cool, authentic places that you hope to stumble upon a few times in your life. Nothing pretentious here, no siree. Ordered two three-meat plates -- ribs, beef and sausage -- for $15 apiece. There's no menu -- you just get the lowdown from the waitress. It was more than enough for our family and everything was exactly as delicious as everyone says. After our meal, Don treated our son to a frozen ice cream and gave us a tour of the place. Oh man, I really hate writing a negative review because it's such a cool place with good people and history. A great dive where you can drink a beer with locals. The problem is the food. Went on a Thursday night after seeing pork tenderloin advertised. I ordered that plus the ribs and sausage. Sadly everything was grossly over cooked. The pork and ribs were extremely dry! Ok, now think of what you imagines when I wrote that...they were drier than that. The only thing that was somewhat edible was the sausage. Pretty hard to mess that up, but they did...thankfully it was, as previously stated, somewhat edible. Even the block of cheese that came with my plate looked like it had sat on a counter for a couple of hours. For all of these reasons, Cele's Store is a little-known Texas BBQ legend. It's not as flashy or well-known as some of it's cousins like Salt Lick and the Lockhart Trinity, but it deserves it's own place in the Central Texas BBQ hall of fame. Here's how it works: you call ahead and tell 'em how many are coming and they do the rest. You basically get brisket, sausage, ribs, white bread, onions, jalapenos, pickles, and cheese wrapped in butcher paper. If you want sides, you gotta bring 'em yourself and they actually encourage it. The meat was just fine all the way around, especially the beef ribs (usually not one of my favorites). The dry rub they use is like a coating of heaven on a cow. When it was all said and done, we gorged ourselves on this fine cuisine and had a glass of iced tea for about $10 a person. You can't beat that with a stick. One more thing... if you've ever seen the movie "Secondhand Lions" with Robert Duvall then you've seen Cele's Store! I don't typically waste time doing this, but this place is absolutely terrible. I was excited to learn about this place and was looking forward to being a frequent customer. That WILL NOT BE THE CASE. First issue, the people that run this place have no idea how to talk to people. They are rude and did not make me feel welcome. I am not going to make this a race thing, but I did notice others being talked to and treated much nicer than I was. I walked up and I was stared at by the older man behind the bar/counter. He asked what I wanted, I replied, "I was told there is bbq here." He replied, "yes we do"...then silence. I then asked, "can I order some". This was followed by yet another blank stare and finally, "yes I will have someone take your order". The plan was to eat the food there. My friend and I decided to get the hell out of there and took our food home, 10 minutes away. I am not going to go into detail. It is not good, PERIOD. Murder. Mayhem. Madness. It all happened here. Cele Store has been featured in several famous movies such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Second Hand Lions and A Perfect World. It is an old general store with wooden floors and faded exterior that has been converted into a BBQ joint about 7 miles east of Pflugerville. This hidden gem provides genuine Texas BBQ on Friday night and for lunch and dinner on Saturday. Thursday is bar night only. It's the real deal served among Texas history, old relics (some of the patrons qualify), posters, and many horned animal trophies. It looks like a combination of my grandfather's deer lease and Soap Creek Saloon. Last night our party of four feasted on baby back ribs, sausage, cheese, jalapenos, onions, bread, BBQ sauce, iced tea and beer. All this for less than $10/person. We brought potato salad, cole slaw, a black bean and corn salad, Tiff's Treats and wine. If they don't sell it, you can bring it. The BBQ is delivered to your table by personable wait staff on huge sheets of butcher paper along with picnic packs of utensils and napkins. Only salt and pepper are applied to the ribs which are smoked to a tender finale in their 1964 pit. Hats were tipped all the way around the table to the juicy and flavorful sausage. The BBQ sauce is a little on the sweet side which complimented the smoky meat beautifully. The Cele Store House Band played and George Strait's lead guitarist, Rick McRae sat in. No room to dance on this particular evening because the place was packed but the music was incredible. The ladies room is old and creaky and the toilet moved when I sat down but everything was clean and there is scented pump soap and hand cream. A sign over the mirror reads, "Howdy Ya'll!" If you want an evening or lunch experience that is truly Texan in every way, come to Cele Store. Call the day before so they can cook enough meat and reserve your table. I couldn't be more excited that this is the 100th review I have written, as this place was truly a special trip. Cele Store, I salute you and what you are doing. We planned a small little group outing, and being over anxious called a week ahead of time. You have to call ahead and tell them you are coming, how many with you, and what you want. Other than the ice tea and beer the rest is up to you. We sat and chatted with other guest who were regulars for an hour, and the owner and her cook son, and some of the other workers. All just the friendliest people. soon we realized they all have a great secret of smoking. I was alittle concerned about the brisket at first, as they had cut it up into small chucks instead of your typical long cuts of brisket. Each piece still had some great rendered fat and flavor on it. It also showed off how well the smoke and salt and pepper managed to soak into each bite. Ribs (which were baby back, which I found interesting) had an amazing salty crust on them and it locked in the flavor and moister perfectly. Not the best rib I have ever had, but most likely the best baby back (Not sure why Ron C. said they had beef ribs, I asked they said they never serve those.. and it is pretty easy to tell the difference between pork baby back ribs and beef ribs....) Sausage was ok. It was clearly Elgin Southside market sausage. Typically I'm not a fan of elgin sausage anymore, but I found out why. elgin doesn't cook their sausage correctly, they keep it way to moist and undercooked. Cele Store cooked it perfectly, and made a decent sausage taste great. Finally, I have to mention the sauce, which was surprisingly good. We learned that the grandmother makes it each Friday and it is her recipe from way back. It had the perfect amount of flavor and spice to it, with great consistency and good freshness. read more

The cold beers just keep coming. The food - by food I mean meat - is best served group-style on large squares of meat-paper. (Yes, I said it : meat-paper). For vegetarians, they serve jalapenos. To the BBQ purists, this place is a slice of Heaven: If Shakespeare ever wrote a tragedy about BBQ, then Cele's Store would definitely be the protagonist of the play. While hubris is always the downfall of the protagonist, in Shakespeare's BBQ tragedy, however, the antithesis of hubris - humility - would take center stage. How can one of the better BBQ joints I have ever eaten at not be on anyone's radar screen? Despite the fact this joint is a stone throw away from where I live and has been in business since the 50's, I'm stilled stumped as to why I didn't know this place existed. The greatest tragedy about this story is that hardly anyone knows about this hidden gem. From the outside, the place looks like a crack house one would find in an episode of "Little House on the Prairie". In the inside, well let's just say it's a combination of a Honky Tonk and the Liberty Bar in San Antonio, with uneven floors that make you think you already have had one too many beers to drink. We sat down, got the kids situated and I went outside to take pictures of the building. A few seconds later, when I went inside my wife tells me she went ahead and ordered for us. "They don't have sides here, so I went ahead and ordered ribs, brisket and sausage for two," she said, with a slightly disappointed tone in her voice. I immediately knew this place was special and was somewhat relieved to find out that they did in fact, serve sides - sliced cheese and jalapenos. Yes, you can get cheese and/or whole jalapenos as sides! Wow, what a place! This place reminded me of the time when my wife asked for BBQ sauce when we ordered brisket from Kreutz Market in Lockhart - can someone please get a rope! To this day, my wife cannot comprehend the words I told her when she requested the sauce. "Honey," I told her, "you have just insulted the pit master." The food was served on butcher paper. I quickly took a picture, took a deep breathe and hoped I wouldn't be disappointed. The brisket was tender, moist and perfectly smoked. The sausage was as authentic as you can get. Many people do not appreciate authentic sausage, but for the BBQ purist, this sausage was damned good. The ribs were somewhat of a disappointment. The ribs were dry, probably attributed to being overcooked or as often is the case, have been sitting around for a long time, thus, allowing the moisture to evaporate on a low heat grill or drip in a pan. It pains me to complain about the ribs when the other two meats clearly overcompensated for any shortcomings. I can't wait to go back and try the ribs again. I'm sure they will be as moist and tasty as the brisket. Although the food was awesome the prices were just as awesome. $15 bucks for family style portions - 2 ribs, about 1/2 pd of brisket and 1/2 pd of sausage, sides of cheese and jalapenos and drinks. You can't beat these prices. The aura of this place is incredible and I was surprised to find out "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was filmed at this location. A movie I have never heard about starring Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, and the creepy kid that sees dead people was also shot on location here. Country videos and even a Sports Illustrated cover featuring Lance Armstrong also used Cele's Store as the backdrop. The only drawback to Cele's Store is BBQ being served on Saturday's only. They also only accept cash or checks. Too bad Texas didn't exist when Shakespeare was alive, otherwise, school-aged children today would be reading about how Romeo took Juliet to Cele's and they lived happily ever after. When you find a really unique place you hang with it. This is the most wonderful little BBQ place out in the country outside of Pflugerville. It is a hidden treasure. The family that owns the store is wonderful - they have been doing it for 50 plus years. It is a labor of love. You would drive by and never know it is the gem it is. The BBQ is wonderful. BBQ ribs, brisquet and sausage, pickles, onions, cheddar cheese and bread. No chicken or turkey. Bring your sides if you need them. They serve on butcher paper! They serve mightly cold beers - bring your hard stuff if you want it. We have raised our 18 year old here from day one. They have become our family too. It's our treat on a Friday night. There is a sign outside now telling the hours - hallelulah! This place was a watering hole for the Richland farmers for years and probably still is. It is open Thursday evening, Friday for lunch and dinner and Saturday for lunch. Make sure to call and make reservations - they cook to their reservations. They have a band one Friday night a month. Check their website to see when and who is playing. To get here - Kelly Lane off of FM 685 (also TX 45 runs into Kelly Lane when it ends in Pflugerville) Go down Kelly lane to Weiss Lane -(t). Unlike true BBQ junkies, though I can say I have put well over 1000 miles into BBQ traveling, I honestly don't "stumble upon" the cool little shacks cranking out the Texas staple only known as Texas brisket. Yes, yes, you will say that this establishment has the best character of any cue joint you will come across. I completely agree. Honestly, the meat here was deserving of no more than a mid-level 2, but because of the amazing people and the very Texan ambiance, I decided to give them the benefit of a doubt. Alas, I still found that the meat was dang near unpalatable, at least in the true smoked meat realm. I will elaborate. If you call something brisket, it better be sliced. The brisket here was cubed. Yes, some of the cubes were as tender as brisket gets, but some boasted hints oddly reminiscent of a dry pot roast, identical, I fear. Not much of a fat cap or smoke ring, to boot. Ribs: no bark, no smoke ring, no tenderness. I honestly had to dig my teeth into some of the muscle fibers, and that is a big rib no-no, regardless if you are St. Louis or Baby Back. BUT, these were Baby Back, and in this category, the lack of tenderness is heresy. Cele Store is DEFINITELY worth a trip. I highly recommend it, but please go with a less stringent discerning palate. You are surely setting yourself up if you book this trip within a week of having Franklin. Yes, Franklin has indeed ruined everyone's spectrum, but Cele Store, I commend you. The staff is amazing. A few Saturdays ago I took the fam here. It's way out in the middle of nowhere which is fine for us, we were up for an adventure. Somehow I drove right past it the first time and didn't even see it on the left. I think this place is a great destination to meet up with a group of local friends and spend a few hours chowing down, kicking back some brews and dancing. Unfortunately for us, we don't drink and had 3 kids (5,8 and 11) in tow so it wasn't the most conducive place to take them. When you walk in for the first time you don't know where to go, where to sit, etc. There is no menu. A very nice gentleman tells you to sit where ever you want. He then asks you what you want, no menu provided which is pretty cool. We ordered brisket, ribs and sausage, no idea how much it costs... My kids check out the 100+ year old place and are amazed at all the stuff in there and wonder how the building has been able to stay standing for so long. Food arrives and unfortunately for us, this day it was only mediocre BBQ. Ribs were on the drier over smoked side. Brisket was ok, a little chewy. Sausage was pretty good. We were pretty bummed as the reviews were stellar. For us it didn't turn out to be like a visit to Snow's or some other out there place we've been to. But the locals were having a great time and the people were super friendly. I'd go again on a weekend night to see how it compares, it looks like a fun little local watering hole and I've never met a nicer group of people running a BBQ place.
