We went here for a dinner with a pair of friends and we were utterly surprised.
A restaurant at our region's largest mall should not be this good and certainly should not be this approachably priced. With a quick Yelp search, and feeling "something new" I offered up new american as an option, hoping to find something off the beaten path, perhaps a small restaurant in the neighborhood after Cafe Levain closed. Instead, Cedar+Stone showed up and with a quick click of the menu, the prices seemed good and the food sounded exact. It was also one of the few places where a Friday night did not need a reservation at 7pm. I was optimistic, if not a bit worried at that a place with openings at prime dinner hour intersects Applebees and Fast Food. I'll get to that why soon.
We arrived, as my wife beat us there and introduced to Marcus our server. A giant of a man with a soft, sincere manner about him, we thought he a football player who heads to the farmer's market, he enjoys his food and knows what's stellar.
We ordered drinks, which were on par with any restaurant cost. Our friends ordered martinis and the pours, like the beer, were considerably larger than expected. They came quickly.
As we ordered appetizers, Marcus zeroed us into trying the Juicy Lucy sliders on a pretzel roll, which while good, didn't have Matt's Bar level of explosion, probably because they spelled "juicy" the 5-8 Club, ie wrong, way. We can't fault them for trying. We also picked up the spicy cheese curds, which were a little soft, a little crunch, and from Marcus telling us "they're Minnesota spicy," and we believed him. They were also tasty.
My wife and I tried and split the Croque Monsieur, which was more croque monster as Marcus informed us, and the portion at $14 is no joke. It's massive. The components from ham to bread were great, though the size was just immense for a taste. It's likely a good lunch option. It came with a full size order of fries, which Marcus informed us to not get extra fries. Those were also dusted appropriately with some seasoning and crispy without being In and Out Burger's well done (ruined) versions. They worked great. The tiny glass ketchup also was good for a laugh.
My wife ordered the farmer salad, which I didn't even get to see how it was because she finished it near immediately. Apparently the pancetta and egg mixed with shallot dressing means I'm supposed to find it on Pinterest. That also means I need a pinterest account.
On Marcus's recommendation, I picked out the braised short ribs with cheddar grits. The beef was perfectly cooked, like we used to have at Cafe Levain, and the grits were good. I don't normally buy or prepare grits, though with the cheddar, I'm inspired to give it a try. I let others at the table try the braised ribs and they were peanut butter and jealous they didn't order it.
Our friend Scott ordered the halibut and he enjoyed it. It's not walleye, but what is these days. The carrot puree really added some earthly taste to it, not what I would expect from saying it was sweet. A strange combination that he said was quite good.
We all tried the baked gouda macaroni and cheese and while it was from another planet level of delicious, we wish we could've incorporated it into a dish instead of adding it like a tapas. Perhaps giant men who eat the croque monsieur add that too?
We met the manager, he seemed nice and gave us his card for the next time to stop in for a free dessert. I've never seen that before. His last name is also Pizza, which means management had to be in his future as a young child. I had to keep reminding myself that this is not normal at a mall restaurant. We shouldn't have good service, food should be fine like a donut for breakfast. It should not be good, and certainly not this great.
I will definitely return here, especially for the happy hour with suburban friends who live on Endor and think TGI Fridays serves food. The patio looks to be nearly complete and that will drive traffic to this place in droves as it's the only outdoor patio for the mall.
It was a game changer to add a hotel to the Mall, and with a restaurant attached that is befitting of a Marriott, I'm in full favor of the new entrance that is easier to park with a strong restaurant. This won't be written up by food magazines because it's in a mall, but I'm moving from four stars to five just to get people to check the place out. If I have a friend for an hour or two layover, I will always recommend getting a beer and one of the sides at Cedar + Stone. You can't beat that light rail convenience to get great food that isn't airport prices. It's my new go-to option for friends in town who want to visit the mall. read more
