Edina continues to befuddle me. Despite its reputation as a city consumed by white-bread elitism, Edina has some of the best and most down-to-earth restaurants, shops, and bars in the Twin Cities. The Hilltop, somewhat west of the 50th and France downtown vibe, is the epitome of what a bar and grill should be. There are multiple TVs to watch games, the staff is fun, and the food is fantastic. My Tuna Melt was one of the best, and my wife's chopped salad was great. When I spied pecan pie on the menu, it was pig-out time. That pie was delicious. Everything at the Hilltop is homemade. We sat at the bar, and everyone was friendly. Conversations flowed from us to other patrons to the servers. Wow, that's what a local bar and grill should be about. The only downside is the parking though we were lucky to have someone leaving just as we pulled in ...limited handicap parking spots as far as I can tell. This was my initial visit, and we ate light, but I found it surprisingly pleasant. Surprising, because I have driven past it millions of times on the way to coffee elsewhere. This time, we dropped in for a quick bite. Our server was quite friendly and prompt. I had the French Onion soup (fantastic) and cornbread (delicious). I'll be back for a deeper menu dive. Have been to Hilltop twice now and had things I liked about it. The area really benefits from having a spot like this for dinner out without too much fuss or fancy, or having to go "into the city." It's a nice family friendly spot with definite regulars. The food is a little pricey for what it is IMO but I suppose they can get away with it in Edina. Food I've had: French onion soup: It's famous for a reason. So much goopy, drippy, delicious cheese and croutons from definitely real bread. This was great- and it seemed like maybe a chicken broth base? I appreciated that the base wasn't the usualy beefy super rich style. It would have been too overwhelming otherwise. Tuna melt: Satisfying, flavorful, plenty of tuna. Good bread. Pear chicken salad: This was great, good dressing, the chicken was cooked well Wings: Have had dry rub and Asian (wet)- very good. Reuben: This was weird. I'm a reuben afficiando. This Reuben had tons of sauerkraut (which I typically love) but only when the ratio is a little more balanced. The reuben I had was like 80% sauerkraut and VERY little meat. It was disappointing. I really wanted to love it because a reuben is one of my favorite foods. But would NOT order it again. Margarita: Skip. Too much sweet & sour. Too sweet overall. Tasted like a Minnesota suburb margarita. I typically like a refreshingly tart margarita, more tequila-forward, with fresh lime. Great service and great patio! We were seated right away on Saturday night on the partially covered patio and it was such a beautiful night! For drinks we ordered a manhattan and pearfect mule and we buoyed both drinks. We started with the sweet potato fries and recommend if you're a fan of that type of fry! The Hilltop is a neighborhood hot spot. It's great for groups, family-friendly, and a perfect choice for happy hour or meal before a night out. The service is great! Our server Laurie was excellent. She was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and efficient; exactly what you want when enjoying a meal at the end of a long day. The food here is tasty and fresh. While they have somewhat limited vegetarian options,the options that they do have are really good! I usually go for the Greek salad. It's really light and refreshing--zippy vinaigrette, chewy dolmas, and the usual suspects of tomato, cucumber, feta, and onion. If you're dessert-minded, you will be very happy. I tried the carrot cake and was most pleased. Highly recommend. One word of warning: this is a popular place, so it can get pretty loud. Hilltop is great! It truly is that "meet ya there" perfect neighborhood spot. Whether it's grabbing a drink with a friend or a family breakfast, this place is fantastic. I've never been disappointed with any of my food choices and most recently got to try the salmon Benedict which was fantastic. The cinnamon roll was also soooo good. I've tried their salads which are also great. The atmosphere is cozy and I love the zig zag seating arrangement. Cool little place that tends to be a packed affair for lunchtime. Service was solid from start to finish even given the lunch rush. We started with the wings and French onion soup. The wings were fantastic - crispy with a very unique flavor reminiscent of those at Monte Carlo downtown (which are also highly rated themselves). The soup was a plus dish, but not quite the knockout I expected given its reputation. One caveat being that I'm not typically one to order French onion soup except at a place that has a "famous" one. For the main dish, the crispy chicken sandwich was uniquely flavored and also an above average combination. Not quite great, but solidly in the "good" category. The place is nice but we found the food to be very bland. I would recommend it if you don't like spicy food but for us the food taste left a lot to be desired. The soup tasted like canned soup, their other entree was a take on chow mein but it was also lacking flavor. This is a great spot for a bite to eat in this neighborhood. There aren't many restaurants around and it offers a great selection of food. The service was extremely quick, for a super busy night! We got the burger, the ahi tuna, poke bowl and steak bites. For dessert, we got the gluten-free brownie with Sebastian Joe's ice cream, and that was to die for, the most amazing dessert. The reason why I gave it three stars was just that the food was average, outside of the brownie. The burger was extra salty, and the onion rings were undercooked. The tuna was super overdressed, which I normally like, but just was too drowned in sauce. The steak was cooked really well just not super flavorful. What a treasure Hilltop has in Blake! He is a gem of a person! Always friendly, always smiling, and always cheerful. We eat at Hilltop fairly often and enjoy the awesome customer service and staff. Hilltop is always a place we count on for a great meal and friendly service. Tonight, my daughter lost her airpods at dinner. We drove home to Mntka without realizing it. Once we did, we pinged the location back to Hilltop. Immediately, we called Hilltop and Blake answered. He stopped what he was doing and searched for the ear buds. We drove back to look, and shortly after arriving, I found the airpods in the parking lot. When I went into the restaurant to let them know, I found Blake, my daughter, and several people looking for the airpods where we were previously sitting that evening. It seemed so many people were pitching in with Blake leading the way. This is exactly what I'd hope to see, but I know few places would care enough. Thank you, Blake, for helping my kiddo look. My 6-year-old said and I went here for lunch the other day and sat at the bar. The bartender was fantastic. Extremely knowledgeable of the menu and really helped us guide us in the right direction. They brought out my son's food very promptly, it was a great burger for a kid. I had the chicken sandwich, I enjoyed it but I think some other things in the menu I would probably like more. We were really craving a proper brunch spot and this place did not miss. Was quite busy on a Sunday morning but with good reason. Definitely a staple for the locals. We didn't notice till it was too late but maybe ask to be seated outside if the weather is nice, it would make the experience almost perfect Had an Espresso Martini while we waited for the food, not the best Martini I've had but I wasn't really expecting much The food however was out of this world. A great place for breakfast! Tables fill up quickly on the weekends so definitely consider making a reservation ahead of time, especially for larger groups (6+). When I visit the Hilltop with friends or family it is a requirement to split the French toast or a stack of chocolate chip pancakes - both amazing recipes. Other than that, their Benedict's, avocado toast, and steak & eggs are other great options for breakfast entrees. I love that their sauces, salsas, and desserts are made fresh in house. You can certainly tell! If you're visiting for dinner, I highly recommend a slice of carrot cake and an espresso martini to finish the night. Not surprising since it's in Edina, but this place is bougie. If you're into upscale ambiance in an idyllic and intimate setting, this might be a good spot for you. Be warned, the parking lot is kind of small due to its location on top of the hill, so you might struggle to find parking during peak business hours. We came on a Tuesday late morning for brunch, so luckily we were able to find a spot and be seated immediately. If you come, prepare to spend awhile, however. I got the impression the staff doesn't hurry, likely because none of the clientele are in a rush either and want to sit and chat (aka, this ain't a Denny's). It took a very long time just to get our drinks, let alone food. The staff also don't seem to bother having much personality or interaction with customers either-- interaction was minimal. I guess I could understand how some folks might want this kind of experience (maybe it makes them feel important or waited upon), but I prefer enthusiastic employees that get involved in adding to the experience. The food was tasty, the place was clean, the bathrooms were nice. There's a bar, but we couldn't tell if it was open at the hour when we came. At the Hilltop it is easy to feel like someone might actually great you with a Cheers show "NORM!" because this place is neighborly and friendly and if you live near by you most likely will run into someone "who knows your name". Service here is always upbeat and quick. The menu is what you want either comfort food or light fair. I have never had something I didn't like. Last night we came for dinner at 9pm and and I was still able to order a prime rib special (not normally something I would order at that time of night...but I had a craving). Charlie our server was happy to serve it nice and rare with mash potatoes, and asparagus. For $21 I was super pleased. Had to update to make special note of the French Onion Soup! Stopped in for a quick dinner and I will be coming back specifically for this soup! So flavorful with a rich broth and lots of caramelized onions, but the melty cheese on top was the real highlight. It melted down the sides of the crock and on top of the delicious broth soaked crouton just as it should be. The cornbread was also really tasty and one order came with two big slices, butter, and honey. My family enjoyed their various meals - Reuben, Horsin' Around sandwich, and kids chicken strips.
