We tried Coalition for the first time as part of restaurant week and I am so glad we did! We always make it a point to eat local and we had never heard of Coalition before seeing it on the list but we will definitely be back to explore more of the menu. My husband and I ended up trying everything on the restaurant week menu which included starters of shrimp bruschetta and steamed pork buns - both were light and so flavorful! I got the salmon with potatoes and pancetta wrapped asparagus while my husband got the roasted chicken with hominy, pork sausage, queso fresco and avocado. Both entrees were so incredibly fresh and with perfectly paired accompaniments - we were seriously thrilled we lucked out with this menu. I was pretty stuffed by the time dessert came around and didn't get a chance to take a photo but I got the key lime pie and my husband got the cheesecake. I am not typically a key lime pie person but this felt more like a tart and it was absolutely amazing. Perfect amount to finish off an immaculate meal!! read more

Visited on a Saturday evening with friends. We had a reservation for 7 PM. The initial first impression was not great because although it wasn't abnormally busy for a Saturday for some reason, the staff was very overwhelmed and behind. We were not greeted by a host for at least 10 minutes. There was a few couples waiting when we arrived & at one point we were all looking at each other confused as to why there was no host or any sort of greeting even by workers walking by. Additionally, we had to wait For our reservation. Our server did not bring us water for a very long time, even after stopping by our table and saying she would bring water. We ended up ordering our food along with drinks right away, given the lack of structure. Our server seemed surprised and almost annoyed at this. Outside of that she was friendly. Overall the food was ok- nothing super special. I enjoyed the ambiance and low lighting vibes. It is a smaller place but still a good amount of tables. They have a parking lot attached with a lot of space but also ample street parking. I would go back to check out the patio and maybe a happy hour in the summer but 3 stars because service & timeliness was way off. Cocktails were nice, the food, less so. I had scallops with shrimp, risotto, and asparagus. I initially had no idea the scallops were even on the plate as they are tiny and hidden within the shrimp, which was way overcooked. The risotto was clumpy and sticky instead of creamy and velvety as it is intended to be. The asparagus were tough and anemic, shriveled to the point of dehydration instead of being roasted. If not for the pleasant cocktails and atmosphere, this would have been disastrous for dinner. Might try it again and order a burger and more amazing cocktails. The White Lotus was lovely. read more

I have been here a couple of times for drinks and have decided that they are really hit or miss. There have been a couple that have been great and a couple that were not so great making it hard to try different things on the menu. I have walked in both times and have been seated immediately. At night the restaurant does get pretty dark in the back of the restaurant so I recommend sitting in the front by the windows or by the bar. The menu had recently changed and I had a chance to try the cauliflower. It was crispy and had a sweet chili bbq sauce, this was very tasty There were only a couple of other items that I would consider ordering and wish they would bring some of the old menu items back that I didn't get a chance to try. read more

The food last night took remarkably long to arrive. When it did arrive, it was barely lukewarm - if not cold. It must have been sitting on the counter, waiting to be delivered, for too long - which also explained the long wait. At the price point of this place, such apparent neglect is not excusable. My girlfriend and I wanted to grab a quick brunch before running errands, so decided to come here. Parking lot available, so that's always a plus for me. Restaurant itself was very nice looking inside! Clean, modern, stylish. Greeted immediately upon entering and our waitress came right up. Overall service was good, food came out timely, and staff was friendly. Food was ok. My burrito didn't have much flavor, but it was decent enough. I asked for hot sauce and all they had was tabasco.... You have to get some cry baby Craig or sriracha! My girlfriend wasn't a fan of her dish either. Very bland tasting. Not to mention, her coffee tasted watered down and wasn't good. We didn't have any cocktails, but i like that they offer some craft options. Solid spot to hit up for dinner. My hubby and I sat outside on the patio and had a great attentive server. I got the pork schnitzel and thought it had great flavors overall but the wild rice was too bland. Thankfully the bourbon pecan cream sauce coated the rice and made it edible. Updated review. Made it back for a full meal and loved it! Based on other rave reviews, we tried the burrata (with fig jam, arugula, prosciutto, and ciabatta). Everyone is right. This is so good! We ate every last bite. Will be coming back for this alone. My partner had the steak sandwich for his entre and I had the apple brie salad with salmon. Yum again! The salmon was the highlight here, and there was so much of it! Beautifully cooked, and also enjoyed the shaved apple and brie crouton. I knocked down a star because I asked for no bacon in the salad (pescatarian) but on the side (for my partner) and still found quite a few bits of bacon tossed in. Not impossible to pick out, and still enjoyed it nevertheless. We dined outside on the patio on a nice summer evening. We'll be back! read more

There's certainly something to both like and dislike about this restaurant. Cool vibe, trendy and approachable menu, great location. But the food and service were both inconsistent on our visit. Today I had the sea bass special of the day. The fish itself was cooked perfectly and served with a decent risotto. But the mushrooms and umami you'd expect in a mushroom risotto was lacking and the entire dish was plated with a sauce that was dessert sweet that took away everything else done right. The Parmesan walleye had a weird herby flavor in the crust that you couldn't directly see or identify. Tartar sauced unceremoniously plopped on top instead of on the side so you could decide for yourself how much was needed. We also had the tuna tartare as an appetizer. Presentation looked great. But the tuna was mushy and flavorless, the avocado not yet ripe and freshly fried tortillas that tasted and looked great, but we're so bubbly from the frying you couldn't place the tuna pieces on them to eat together as designed. Service was not friendly or engaging. Waited at the host stand for a while as different staff came up to grab stuff, but no one saying anything to us. Eventually someone from behind the bar came and seated us. Waited again for a while before our waitress came by. Once our order was in the food was back actually super quick. This is my second visit. My prior visit was a work dinner. For that evening service was much better. I had the smoked pork chop which was slightly undercooked and also lacking much in flavor, despite the char. Stopped in for lunch yesterday with a friend for the first time at the 50th and France area location. We both ordered the regular cheeseburger and fries but were told by the server that the fryer was broken ( again) so she offered us each a cup of soup as an option at no extra charge. It was good. However we both ordered our burgers medium well and they came out very rare. They were loaded with so much lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc. that we didn't realize how rare they were at first, only that the meat tasted "mushy". Our server was excellent and did not charge for one of the burgers. There were no salt and pepper shakers on the tables and I didn't feel I should have to ask;, almost completely out of toilet paper in the ladies room which I reported. I feel they weren't really trying except for the poor server who did her best. I'd give this place a pass in the future. read more

Our server was very friendly and checked on us often without making us feel pressured or rushed to order. We enjoyed our drinks and a light dinner on the patio which was nice and cozy. The burrata came with fig jam, prosciutto, arugula, and ciabatta. Each item was absolutely delicious!! I'm going to be honest, I don't understand the hype. Maybe it was the day we went or the server we had but Coalition disappointed me. We made our reservation online and showed up to a near empty restaurant at 545 on a Thursday night. The bar was out of several key ingredients when we tried to ordered drinks so we went the NA route but were never given a refill. We closed the place down, which means the only drinks we had four 3.5 hours was the original water and the two drinks we ordered when we sat down. Food wise I was surprised by the actions of our waiter. I would ask for a recommendation, and when I asked about another item I got a shrug and ' it's okay". In fact, this is the only reason we didn't order dessert. I tried the fried goal cheese, it was good but pretty intense. If you don't love goat cheese you may struggle. The bbq mac and cheese was somewhat disappointing. I was missing the creamy ness and cheese-y goodness I would normally be looking for. My friend didn't seem to enjoy her dish either- which was a bummer. All in all I don't think I'll return. The vibe felt off with our waiter and the entire experience didn't live up to the hype. read more

Fantastic spot! They are taking COVID precautions and we felt safe at our table. It's such a perfect spot for drinks, dinner, date night! We started with drinks (I had the blood orange margarita and it was super yum) and the Brussels Sprouts (fried Brussels, corn, queso fresco and chili lime seasoning). The Brussels were fantastic! I love any dish with good charred corn and this was no exception! We ate it before I could snap a pic but I'd definitely recommend it! For dinner I had a hard time choosing between the pork chop, the ribeye and the charred corn salad. Our server recommended adding steak to the charred corn salad and it did not disappoint. I also really appreciated a genuine recommendation from our server, instead of him trying to just sell me the most expensive dish (aka the ribeye). Love that. Even with all the confusion the person was able to place my order, get gift card details and my card details as there was a portion still needed after gift card. This is my second time here and so far everything I've had is delicious! My previous visit we had the Burrata. So. Stinking. Good. I swear the bread was fresh baked right out of the oven. And everything together (fig jam, prosciutto and arugula piled on the bread) is perfection. This time we shared the Korean Tacos. Oh my! So amazing!! It comes with three small tacos but the flavor is HUGE so three is enough even when sharing. For the main dish I've tried the lamb bolognese (which was yummy) and this time the chicken sandwich. The honey siracha sauce on the chicken is delicious. The blue cheese sauce is the perfect accompaniment. The chicken was a little dry but the sauce on it helped. Their French fries are thin and perfectly crispy. Now for the cocktails: the old fashioned is made with a Minnesota rye. So good! After trying this old fashioned I have been making my own old fashioneds with rye. I have also tried the Division Bell, if you like mezcal (which I do) this is your drink. The Brainstorm is good, a little lighter tasting than I thought it would be. Overall this place is great for a night out! And there are so many more things I want to try! read more

Here comes a solid but less than exciting review of @coalition50th - something we'd call a 'good' but not great dining experience in whole. our appetizers stole the show, especially the shrimp bruschetta , diminishing what little light was left across our entrees. I don't like writing negative reviews, and truthfully have never had a bad experience at the excelsior location, but I'd be lying if I said this was a cost-worthy night of dining. in terms of 50th and France, food is always expensive, but it almost always has been worth the price. Been there multiple times. Each time quality slips. Last visit was July 4th. Salmon was fishy. Brussels Sprouts were well done and dried out. Nobody bothered to look at them prior to delivery to table. They replaced the sprouts but unhappy had to wait. Had the Korean Buns. The meat was cold and buns were so soggy, they ripped. So glad I found this place. Walking in you're greeted by a hostess in the cutest little floral entryway. The restaurant itself isn't that big but that's okay. It's very inviting but intimate. The decor is very modern and tasteful. Sets the tone for the type of service and food to expect. The food is absolutely delicious. It looks like they have something for those wanting to splurge on carbs and tho who are looking to watch what they eat. I personally had the biscuit Benedict and was very pleased with how I was able to customize it. Delicious and hearty biscuit with loads of meat and poached eggs. The pancake is also large and delicious. A friend said she'd definitely recommend the barrata. If i could eat it right now, I'm sure I'd say the same. The service here is exceptional. Very pleased with the attentiveness and friendliness. A little loud but you're able to have a conversation with those at your table without shouting. I did not have high expectations going into this meal. I would've been happy with a mediocre cocktail and something to fill me up, but what I got shocked me. I'm quite easy to please, not a snob (despite my language), and I've never written a negative review for a restaurant before. But to be frank, this experience ruined my day. I've worked in the service industry for years, and none of my qualms with this establishment fall on our server -- she was lovely. The food itself, unfortunately, has encouraged me to issue a complaint. I ordered the lemon pepper wings. While the chicken was crisped and cooked well, the lemon pepper was but a whisper. If I had a magnifying glass, I could not find evidence of seasoning. My friend ordered the raw vegetable salad. She enjoyed it just fine, though for its price, the portion was almost insulting. She does not have any allergies, but after finishing her meal, became incredibly nauseous. In a matter of minutes she rushed to our car and began profusely vomiting the entirety of her meal. We came to this restaurant hoping for a quick bite and a nice drink and left in a panicked rush. This review doesn't speak to the staffs performance but more so to my concern on what is happening in that kitchen. I hope no one else has the same experience we did. Coalition is a hip, modern, and affordable brunch place! There's also a parking lot and lots of nearby residential parking spots, which is always a plus. Came here for brunch, and I got the biscuit Benedict. The biscuit was good texture and I appreciated that the ham was in shavings instead of one wad. The hash browns were a bit oily and undercooked for me, but I will say I do really enjoy a crispy hash brown. I had mixed experiences with the service here, but overall it was good. Don't you hate it when you see a waiter bring out something you'd totally want to order but have no idea what the dish is? Not a problem for me when I went here, I was eyeing something a waiter brought to another table, and the greeter immediately came over and told me the name of the dish. The only problem I had related to service was our table's waiter seemed to rush us to leave. read more

This is a really cute little restaurant in good ole 50th and France. It is what I expected it to look and feel like for a restaurant in this neighborhood. We got sat right away for lunch on a Friday. Their lunch menu has many unique dishes which I always enjoy. The Korean tacos were pretty good! They had some room for a little more flavor though. I'm hoping I just made the wrong choice for my main dish. The chicken sandwich was not my favorite. The balsamic fig jam mixed with the brie cheese sort of clashed to make this odd, bland, taste. The jam was also dry and soaked into the bun. I love the sweet, powerful flavors of balsamic fig jam and they seemed to be lost with this dish. The food also took a while to come out. I'm hoping to try this place again based on everyone else's reviews, it should be better than this experience! read more

My friends and I bellied up got the bar for a quick fix of some booze and a bite but had to wait a while as we tried to flag down the bartender. My friend ordered a Manhattan that she sent back and exchanged for wine. Rightfully so as it strongly resembled Robitussin. The Old Fashioned was OK. Both drinks were pre-made, so maybe that what made them less than great?? Either way, the quality didn't match the $15 price point. The Brussel sprouts were quite delicious and fries were good. I would be interested in exploring more of the menu as the food we got was solid. read more
