*From August* We came here for my birthday dinner. They do not take reservations, but we arrived on a Saturday night around 7:30PM and only had to wait about 20 minutes! It's outdoor seating only (this is during COVID) but normally they have the indoors open for dining. The outdoor seating is prime anyways since you are literally on the lake with a beautiful view! I had the Shore Platter (broiled haddock, shrimp, scallops and a crab cake in a lemon butter sauce) with a side of rice. Such a delicious meal! I rarely get seafood as my husband is allergic but my birthday is the one special occasion! Looking forward to coming back here again next summer for my birthday too! I was impressed by the selection and that they offer seafood. Prices are expensive, but again are worth what you're getting. I recommend the Lobster Bisque soup. They also had decent portioned cocktails and a good drink menu. Expect a wait as it is a beautiful place offering good food. Many reviews complain about slow customer service, but if you go to dinner during prime dinner time at a restaurant that serves made to order food during a pandemic- you should expect service on the slower side. Ate here a few times over the summer and had a great experience! The deck is right on the water, with spectacular views! The first time, I had the chicken French! It was very well done, full of flavor, moist, and delicious pasta paired with it! Our waitress was friendly and attentive! The bar menu looks great, but alas, this dinner trip out was to tell my parents that my husband and I are expecting our first child together, so everyone else got to enjoy the drinks! The second trip, i tried the steak, mixed veggies and a potato, which was also very good! Well seasoned, cooked to the temp I asked for. Again, we had a beautiful view! Prices are a little expensive. What a horrible dining experience. I sat out on the deck and was under the tent due to rain. All the seating was squished together and you were only inches away from other tables. Our server lacked, leaving dishes on the table, forgetting drinks and bringing food late. She also had an attitude when we asked nicely for another drink....the second time. The food was sub par for the high prices, $20 for a fish fry (it was a good fish fry), but I've had equally good for half the price and they gave bigger portions of fries and coleslaw. Mid dining, they had to set up an area for 21 people. You would've thought it was after hours and no one was in the restaurant the way they dragged every table and chair and just banged them around for 5-10 mins. Overall not impressed with any aspect of the experience besides the view, which next time I'll just pack a lunch and sit on the beach for free. read more

For my daughter's High School graduation lunch I chose this restaurant because the pictures in their website showed a patio by the lake with wonderful views, and they were not lying. The outside patio is just perfect for a nice relaxed lunch and perfect for pictures. The environment was quiet, calm and there was not a lot of people. The waitress was friendly but wasn't cleaning the table after each order. We were a party of 8, we order appetizers, entrees and desserts and we found ourselves cleaning the table after each order because the waitress was just not on top of it. We all ordered different dishes to share and taste. The scallops and calamari were my favorites they tasted amazing and perfectly cooked. Everything else was ok, except when we got the salad there was a hair in it and of course we were disgusted. The desserts were delicious (specially the peanut butter pie). I am going to give you 5 stars because your staff and view are killer. But I am also going to tell you perhaps what you can pay some attention too... 1. Too many fruit flies in the bar. But the bartender on Sat was so nice! He was working hard. 2. Show on your menu what is gluten free/ dairy free and what can be made that way. 3. Get gluten free pasta. Barilla GF Pasta is sold at Wegmans. Make it happen please! 4. When the entrees come out before the appetizers empower your server to comp something, a drink, an app, whatever. 5. Get a manager that has a presence and can keep an eye on how things going. The food is good, the atmosphere is amazing, but you still need someone to manage the whole thing. Again, your server was lovely and when the food finally came. It was delicious. I'm sure these are all residual things from that awful Covid...and for that I am sorry, but people are still paying lots of money, so just be aware! Been there twice in the last month. The first time they seated us outside, then forgot about us, we had to go remind them, we were there. Thought it was a fluke. When tonight for dinner. Very busy so we decided to eat inside, we were seated at 7pm, at 8:20 we still had not been served, so i went to the hosted, she said shes just the hostess.....after that the staff was shimmering about me. We were finally served around 8:30-8:40pm. They never really apologized, justmade excuses why it too so long to serve us. We didn't receive a discount from our bill either. Other than that never been impressed with their food. Almost any of the seafood I've had is like Frozen Gordon Fisherman you can buy at a grocery store. They seem to employ many young seasonal kids that struggle to do even a decent job as wait staff. The drinks were sub par. The service was good, the view is great. Most of the food was ok but we ordered a ny strip steak med-rare that came out well done. They remade it and the second steak was also over at med rare. The server agreed but the rest of the table was done and we had to go so she ate the overcooked steak. With a mouthful of braces. Castaways is surviving based on it's decent view of Lake Ontario. They get various parties and events booked, such as baby showers, yoga events on the patio, and work happy hours. The service was not up to par. There was one red headed waitress hustling, trying to make sure everyone was hydrated on the warm summer afternoon. The bus boy blatantly dropped silverware on the ground more than once, looked at it, and walked away without a care. When one of our table members went to use the restroom, a group of staff was chilling inside nonchalantly. They were friendly, but not very attentive. The food and drinks were pretty awful. I ordered fish tacos with mahi mahi that looked like it fell into the grill charcoals, and then was put into the taco. A buddy ordered "bruschetta", which had slices of processed mozzarella on them, no basil, and a few clumps of non ripened tomatoes. I was charged $9 for a glass of wine that was clearly barefoot, or some other boxed wine. The strawberry daquiris were chalky, and tasted like tums. If you come to Castaways, come for a beer. Don't expect to get it for 25 minutes or so. I really do not recommend this place. read more

Ok first and foremost the reviews on here are straight up.. and it's sad to say... it's not good. A friend is moving outta town and I thought and yes we read the reviews we would just go here for the views (they are lovely) and a cocktail or two. We came here on a Sunday they open at noon, we had a reservation at noon for four. We got here a little early no issues due to the fact they were having a private event (a baby shower) also outside which is where everyone basically sits. When you drive up they have two sides for parking than walking in this place it's DARK... why who knows..We went thru a narrow hallway than we saw the outside tables, Adirondack Chairs and that view.. yes it's Instagram worthy yes... but when it comes to food and service... IT LACKS. We were here for about two hours luckily I had great company but during our two hours other tables came and went and this other server was on it. Our server.. we thought he was cool but he was slow as molasses.. we wondered if he had to go some place to get our drinks, food, everything? We ordered right away glasses, ice and a pitcher of water ask for that ASAP. Also later my friend went inside to get more (water/ice) since our server was who knows where? The frozen drinks are not worth it, the sangria which luckily we did not order he told us it was BOXED?! The beers on tap/bottles fine, my other friend got a glass of what they called "Rose'" no it was not.. it was just bland who knows what. Food was a hit or miss, I got a burger it was not bad the fries were hot; my friend got the fish tacos and felt they were "ok", someone else got the turkey wrap and asked for bacon and extra bacon on the side it did not come it had to be sent back.. so even though we said what we wanted when we originally ordered??? Another person got the fried calamari and the marinara sauce was cold? The bruschetta oh I almost forgot about that... it had melted mozzarella cheese on it? It made no sense. I don't doubt this place has been here for a long time, but if they could do a few tweaks this place could be more than "just a view" I understand the restaurant industry is hard but at this point for them this place could be so much more. Other servers were on it our guy although nice he was MIA and other people who came after us got served before us that was annoying. Oh and since this place has an outdoor tent/cover it is rolled up but we noticed some ballooning with water in these balloons we had a feeling if these bursted it would be a mess of bacteria all over. I highly recommend anyone who loves a good view to head here. Just get a drink and sit in the Adirondack chairs. I also suggest you leave to eat dinner elsewhere. The food here is not inedible. It's just overpriced and basic. They know they can get away with it because the view is just that phenomenal. If you do decide to eat there, I suggest sticking with something uncomplicated. Oddly, the vegan crab cakes are really tasty here. They are my new standby if I decide to eat here. Service is usually non existent because they don't have enough servers working on busy nights. The bartender often has to consult the short drink menu to remember what goes in the cocktail (you're better off with the beer). Despite all this, the wait can extend beyond 90 mins on nice summer evenings. I am going to attribute this to the stunning summer sunsets that will distract you from the fact that you just waited 2+ hours to pay $20 for haddock that wasn't properly deboned. No surprises with Castaways. The view of the lake was spectacular and the service was good. The food was slightly above average, but pricey - although I recognize that you are also paying for the experience. I had the grilled Haddock with Cajun spices, which was good. My better half also had the grilled Haddock, but it was stuffed with shrimp and crab meat. She thought it was good, but the baked potato was better. Overall, a good experience, but not a frequent destination, but we'll be back maybe next summer? read more

What could improve? EVERYTHING except the location. This review is for the current ownership. My suggestion is that you get out now. Sell the place to someone who understands the hospitality industry so they can change the name and start over in this truly premium location. I'm going to be honest I haven't been there for a few years, and then ate there twice, a year apart w a client who lived in Webster and picked up the tab both times. My experience both times was exactly like all the other 1-star reviews posted here... VERY mediocre food and bar service coupled with a young overwhelmed kitchen staff and servers ...most likely totally untrained in customer service... equals a horrible experience for patrons. I never posted a review back then bc my clients liked the place and it was their nickel, but today I was scoping out some places to have dinner next weekend (will be in Webster to see grand-kiddos) and Castaway's showed up again with exactly the same issues they had then. No-one is listening. It's time to retire folks. Cash out and let someone who knows what they're doing recover this sinking ship. read more

Server forgot a few of our items. The food was served warm to cold. Salad was served with some spoiled lettuce. I asked for one item to be sent back. The pie was good but you can't just make good pie and serve alcohol. These guys need to up their game a lot. We spent over $50 per person. We ventured out to Castaways for lunch because we wanted a nice lake spot and some good food. We ended up sitting under the canopy on the deck because the sun was pretty intense. We arrived around noontime and it was about 1/4 full. I really think they need a lunch menu. The prices were very high, especially for burger ($16) or a crab cake sandwich ($18). I ended up with a lobster roll ($21) which was good (bun not toasted) with a small bit of coleslaw and fries. Fries were just ok. My sangria drinks were $9 each and for the price, I should have gotten a bigger glass. My husband had the blackened Grouper sandwich which was cooked well and spiced just right. The staff was friendly but seemed frenetic for not being that busy. More staff came on at 1 and the patio started to fill up. It's an ok place but for the money, I wish it was more. read more

Last night was my first time at Castaways and I really enjoyed the beautiful view of the lake especially at sunset. It was amazing. All the staff was very friendly and accommodating. I originally was sat right outside the patio but notice a table closer to the lake. They let me switch tables, but as I say at that table there was a swarm of Nats that kept flying over my table so they let me move again. They are very nice and understanding. We ordered 2 drinks which was expensive for the lack of liquor. We started off with the calamari. It was so good. Very crispy, with fresh lemons and we asked for our marinara sauce to be spicy and they definitely came through with the spice. Next we ordered the mussels which was in a garlic, tomato white wine sauce. This was great. The muscles were cocked perfectly the sauce had a ton of flavor a tad bit salty but still was good. Lastly, was the castaways broiled platter, haddock, scallops, shrimp and crab cakes. We were very disappointed with this entree. It was very small for $32.00, and had no flavor. We will never order that again but look forward to going back to try more dishes, the friendly staff and beautiful scenery. read more

We were here for a birthday lunch. Unfortunately we couldn't sit outside. There were no umbrellas for thr sun/heat. They were kind enough to say we can seat you at this table in the window with the view. Once seated our view was their outdoor heaters in the window. We all ordered salads. I ordered the coconut shrimp. It was awful. No coconut taste and the shrimp pounded down so thin. The salads were served in these old wooded bowls that were chipped all around the rim. The waitress was nice but practically tossed the bowls in front of us. Very disappointed. Last summer for my birthday I had the coconut shrimp and it was delicious but it seams every other time I go there it is awful. It will be awhile before we are back there again. read more

Two stars only for the view! They only take reservations for a party of 6 or more. They are understaffed so reservations would keep it much more manageable for them. Parking is horrible. We waited 1 hr and 15 min for our table and then waited another 1 plus for our food. They are overpriced for the quality of food. My husband ordered a Strip steak for $39 and was given a rubbery piece of fatty meat . It was not even a strip cut! The server was overwhelmed and kept asking for " some grace " yet was not friendly or cordial at all. Drinks are crazy overpriced as well. A split of Prosecco should not be $16! This place lacks quality, customer service, and is incredibly overpriced! Will not go ever again! You can get the same view of the lake and sunset on the pier for free! We first ate here several years ago, while I don't remember what I ordered, I certainly remember being underwhelmed by my dish. We came back about two years ago, and had appetizers on the deck. I had ordered the chicken wings, and they were actually great. Not any of the seafood items that my table ordered, but the chicken wings were what was noteworthy. So to my most recent visit, 5/12/19. Disappointment is an understatement. Took my wife and mother-in-law to Castaways for a Mother's Day dinner. I should have known. We paid seven dollars for a plate of buttered noodles for my three year old. I had the coconut shrimp dinner, which the menu touts as "jumbo shrimp" and "breaded with their own coconut breading." I call BS. The shrimp were slightly larger than a quarter, and looked like they came right out of the frozen foods section of a grocery store. I almost felt taken advantage of paying $26 for this. My wife ordered Maryland Crab Cakes, which were over done, and again, looked as though they could have been frozen foods items. Again, coming with a price of around $25. My mother-in-law ordered a salmon salad, which she limped through. Neither the salmon nor the salad gave off the "fresh" feeling you would expect. It is sad to have a restaurant with one of the best views of Lake Ontario, that sells itself as a seafood restaurant, be so bad at making "fresh" seafood look and taste good. I will start by saying I normally don't frequent seafood restaurants, but went here as it was suggested by the boyfriend. Considering how packed and busy the place was, the 45 min wait was not so bad. It was a relatively nice day so we hung outside near the hampton chairs. Once our table was called, we sat outside in the back. For drinks, I recommend the Shipwreck and the Summer Sweet Tea for cocktails. The Bahama Mama and the Ruby Red Breeze were meh. After some drinks, we started with the crab cake appetizer. I must say they were flavorful, savory, and light. Didn't feel dense nor soggy. However for $16, more than 2 crabcakes slightly larger than a donut hole, I would have expected 3 or 4; not 2. Still, it was very delicious. The Shore Platter was also ok. The haddock was not bad but not great. The shrimp were cooked to perfection which could only been improved if it came with clarified butter. The scallops were cooked well but maybe if it was pan seared with an herbal finishing oil, it would have elevated this. Essentially it was more or less just a bland dish. It also came with crab cakes which was incredible and yet again. amount of crabcakes were limited. The Surf and Turf was done well at least. Got the strip steak and lobster tail. Again, missed opportunity with not including clarified butter. A note I must say is the rice that came with the surf and turf....it is obviously the microwave Uncle Bens rice. Not sure what is worse, to use store bought rice or make rice that tastes store bought. Tsk tsk. For a seafood focused restaurant, it is sad that the highlight of the meal was the key lime pie for dessert. I think they added a raspberry sauce drizzle on the base of the pie, which honestly was unnecessary and the chefs should just let the pie highlight itself. Now to the decor. OMG, whatever era this is from, it has been long gone. This place is incredibly out dated. I somehow decided to still eat here. The staff were all over the place and I mean it in a good way. The place was busy and the servers were constantly in and out checking up on tables, taking orders, and checking in on us. Our server was great. The moment there was a sprinkle outside, she got us a table inside as the covered area in the back was already full. She also recommended drinks and helped suggest some items. Particularly, she was the one that mentioned the Key Lime Pie being amazing. whispers "It was!" Overall, I may come here for drinks with a view along the water but for almost $200 for 2 people, the food was quite underwhelming.
