About a month before Valentine's Day, my boyfriend told me he was surprising me with a dinner date somewhere we'd never been, downtown. I pictured it being at Caroline. Somehow, I just knew it would be Caroline. Sure enough, on Valentines Day, our Uber headed down 6th, then turned onto Congress, and dropped us off in front of Caroline! It was busy but not too busy. The atmosphere was dim and candlelit, and a bit special but not too pretentious. Service was reasonably prompt for a busy night. We saw a bunch of things we wanted to order, but decided on Chicken Schnitzel and Beet Capriccio for me, and he got the Salmon with asparagus and cauliflower rice. We appreciated a menu of healthy but interesting things. The food was as delicious as we hoped! The chicken serving was generous, and the salmon was slightly small. The only downside were the amount of bitter greens served with both the chicken and the beets. I felt wasteful not eating them all, but I just couldn't do it... not if I wanted to save room for dessert! And I'm glad I did! I got the chocolate cake, which turned out to be a dense, gooey molten chocolate situation, topped with whipped cream, (and I added a scoop of ice cream to make it even better!) I've been here before to the upstairs part for happy hours but never in the main dining area. We made reservations and was seated right away. Easily accessible by foot if you're already in the downtown area as there's only street parking. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated for the holiday but fairly small. I noticed a room that was closed off by a curtain, perfect for business meetings. We were seated basically near the host's stand. Thankfully they utilized the revolving doors due to the cold because we would've been directly in the path of the drift. The lunch menu itself really doesn't have many options. The actual drink menu has more of a variety than the actual food. When we were seated, we were given the menu on the drink side so I was amazed to turn it over and see the food menu with hardly nothing on there. Gent staffing noted no reservation barked & talked down to me & biz execs, "Let me see what I can do!" Note: At early 5:00 pm only ONE table was occupied; restaurant was empty. Gent showed biz group to table. After ordering appetizers, same weird staffer at host stand approached table to say, "I simply cannot have your chair obstructing path between two tables!" (If any issue, so many hospitality ways to accommodate any concerns - this is not a fire marshal matter.) He was oddly hostile. Poor soul at host stand - and thereby manager - do not understand simple courtesy, service, & hospitality to biz folks. Caroline was a short walk from our hotel so we called in our order and when we arrived, it was waiting on us. The restaurant is located in a hotel and there's a pastry bar area and an area to dine in. We tried the burrito, hangover burger, pancakes, and cinnamon roll. The burger was outstanding and I loved the yogurt and fruit compote for the pancakes. When I saw that, I wondered why I hadn't thought of that before! I definitely wouldn't call that a sunny side up egg, it was so much undercooked I didn't want to eat it. The rest of the dish was unmemorable, it was bland and didn't stand out to me. Wow. What a mess! My entree was pretty good (mushroom bolognese), but the horrific service and experience ruined it for me. We had a party of about twelve, and we had a reservation for 6:00 pm. I was the first to show up and just waited. Two more came and I approached the hostess about seating us. No, she wouldn't seat us, not until the entire party arrived. Now, I am very familiar with, and usually supportive of this concept, which is almost exclusively applied at lunch. During a lunch rush you do not want half a party occupying valuable table space. This was not lunch, and we had a reserved table. In fact, I could SEE my unoccupied, reserved table. So, the hostess was doing nothing except preventing us from getting a drink order at the table. When the rest of my party arrived, they of course then seated us, at which point the clueless server tried to navigate a dozen drink orders all at the same time. A HALF HOUR LATER we still did not have drinks. It did not get better. We ordered a bunch of appetizers (two of most dishes), and they were all solidly mediocre. Worst shishito peppers I've ever had. Bland deviled eggs. Bland tacos. Of course it took forever to get them. I really don't blame the waitress. She had a ton of tables all over (and outside) the restaurant; I blame management for poor training of the floor staff. I looked at Yelp reviews (so glad I did), as I was about to order the halibut. Colleagues who got it were not impressed. The mushroom bolognese was good. Saved this from being a one star review. More server fun: the runners who dropped the dishes had no idea where they were supposed to go, so they just set the plates down wherever! We all then traded plates with each other. My parents and I had dinner at Caroline a few weeks ago. We saw that they were participating in Austin Restaurant Weeks (ARW) so we made a reservation. Since it was last minute, there weren't many times left, but we managed to snag a res for 5 pm on a Saturday. When we walked in, we were greeted immediately. Every staff member that we encountered was so friendly! Our server was Breann and she was such a sweetheart. We asked about the ARW menu and she had thought it was over, but she went and checked and realized that they were still participating! I'm so glad because that was the main reason why we were there. The ARW 3-course dinner was $40. While we were browsing the menu, I checked in on Yelp and got an offer for free roasted sweet corn dip! Breann said we could redeem it if we wanted to so that's exactly what we did. Drinks: I ordered the Congress Ave. Greyhound. It was really good and had a strong grapefruit flavor. My mom ordered the Pomegranate mule and my stepdad had a Pepsi. The staff brought out a carafe of water for the table which was nice. 1st Course: Grilled Shishito Peppers with Yuzu Aioli - These peppers were absolutely delicious! The charred flavor of the peppers and the aioli was wonderful! They weren't terribly spicy which was nice since I don't tolerate spice that well. I enjoyed these a lot more than I thought I would. Spicy Deviled Eggs - Creamy, flavorful, and delicious! These were also not too spicy which was great. I really enjoyed the jalapeno aioli. Roasted Sweet Corn Dip - This wasn't one of the options for the first course, but we ordered it since it was free. It was really tasty and flavorful! It could have been a little bit warmer, but I liked the tortilla chips that were served with it. There were also some slices of jalapeno on the chips, but I avoided those lol. 2nd Course: Salt and Pepper Salmon - We all ordered this and it was very tasty. The asparagus was seasoned nicely and the cauliflower pilaf was really good. My mom doesn't love asparagus, but she said she actually liked the way it was prepared. 3rd Course: Chocolate Cake - This was the only option for the dessert course. The cake was very rich. The cream on top was really good. The edges of the cake were a bit more firm while the center was basically gooey fudge. It was really good, but so rich. I couldn't finish it. The service was exceptional! The staff was so great with bringing out fresh silverware after each course. Breann was very attentive and did a great job. I think they got a kick out of our reactions because we enjoyed our food so much. In addition to the restaurant, Caroline has a bakery and coffeehouse. There's a separate side entrance that you can go through to get to it if you don't want to walk through the restaurant. They also have a nice patio out front as well as a bar on the second floor called Upstairs at Caroline. The restrooms are located on the 2nd floor in the lobby of the Aloft. Went here for dinner on a Friday. We got there at 5:30 and had no issues getting seated, but it filled up quickly after. The cocktails were fun and unique, and each of us enjoyed a different one; the apricot spritz, mules on the green, and the seasonal sangria were our firsts, and my friend ended the night with an espresso martini (8.3/10). The drinks are strong. Not "I can't drink this" strong, but definitely "don't give me more than two of these" strong. Caroline was our first stop for breakfast after landing in ATX. It's downtown, at the base of a high rise building or a hotel or something. When you walk in, you see an adorable cafe area where you can purchase baked goods, coffees, etc. We opted to sit down and enjoy a full breakfast. I was very happy they were able to take a reservation for 16 with only a few days notice. They handled our large party quite nicely, and many of us went upstairs after dinner for drinks, which was super convenient. As for the food/drink: The Pomegranate Mule, Burrata, and Roasted Sweet Corn Dip were all excellent. I'm still thinking about the Burrata a few days later. The Delmonico Steak was more in the 4-star range. I ordered medium-rare, but this was a bit more on the medium side. I did like the chimichurri on top, though. This restaurant is located within the Aloft/Element Austin Downtown hotel and there is even an upstairs part to cater to the Gen Zs with an outside patio, bar, games and a DJ. I went upstairs after brunch and felt old, but enjoyed it. When my food arrived I spotted two sunny side eggs on top of my biscuits & gravy. It looked marvelous and there goes eating a lite meal. I took one bit and it was mouthwatering. The eggs tasted farm fresh, the biscuits even though buried in egg and gravy was still soft and crunchy, and the gravy had a wonderful flavor to it. The waitress was nice and friendly but could have been more attentive and let us know about the wait on the food. It initially started really good with the street corn dip, the dip was cheesy and had just the right flavor. However, we finished the appetizer and waited half an hour for the pasta then almost one hour later before we were served the turkey meal. In the lobster pasta, the noodles were okay but the lobster itself was not. It was all low quality pieces, likely canned lobster claws. I expected more from the dish considering the price. The looks of it was also deceiving because presentation is good. The turkey dish itself had very good sides (mashed potato, green beans and cornbread) but the turkey was overly salted.
