Running my errands this morning and decided to stop for a bite to eat. Landed here. Since I've never been here I looked at the menu for several minutes. I even offered the lady behind me to go ahead of me since I was still deciding what to eat. While I was deciding what to have I asked to use the restroom and the barista/white lady with the tattoos and the hat looked at me and said, "no we don't have a restroom you can use" and stared at me. I have never, ever felt this way but everything about her demeanor, the energy she radiated and tone in her voice made me feel that this was about the color of my skin. Burnt coffee. It was worse than Starbucks. The barista was also super awkward about me paying for the drink too. Then he didn't make it right and put my lid and straw on an unclean countertop to "fix it." I took one taste, walked out and chucked it right in the trash, 6 bucks wasted. Went next door to Revolution Roasters where they consistently make amazing quality drinks and never serve burnt coffee. I am willing to pay for consistency. Stopped by this morning (Sunday in October) at 830am for a cup of coffee before walking at the beach. Never been here before, wanted to try something new. Ordered a Mexican mocha to go. 3 stars cause it was all OK. Not horrible, but not great. Customer service was very transactional, it wasn't super warm, welcoming or great service. From ordering to receiving the 1 coffee order, 35 minute wait time. Atmosphere was OK, it's just a walk up coffee counter off the street. Drink was OK also. Coffee tasted burnt. I love dark chocolate, I've had many variations of what different stores consider a Mexican mocha, as well. As a Mexican American I like to usually try it out at different places, and this one was more on the lower end of the kinds I've had. Coffee just tasted burnt and the chocolate sediment at the bottom of the cup settled awkwardly so the cup wasn't a consistent flavor while drinking. I'll try again next time, maybe. Right out front the consignment shop is this trendy and amazing coffee spot that will completely transform you. The options are limited but that is what makes it just so much more inviting. If you can make it pass the dripping wet hair of the surfers and the boho dresses that drape the sidewalk you have to try an "iced dirty chi sub almond milk". It will leave you feeling satisfied. The bagels and pastries that are in the front are sweet treats that don't last long. Captain's is a place both locals and visitors can gather together, grab a great coffee, and engage in friendly conversation. I especially love the walk up window for ordering on my dog walks not a lot of places in Oceanside and Carlsbad will let you come in to order with a dog. Quickie Update: I got a latte this afternoon (10/20/18) and added a shot, and it was decent... Poor guy assumed I wanted it cold, and had to remake my drink hot. Actually he remade two drinks because I also got a mocha with an added shot. When I'm in the area, I favor Revolution next door for their house-made milks and syrups. However, I know someone who is loyal to this joint (CG was here first after all). I tried a large latte from here to see what I was missing, but I found it completely generic. The coffee flavor was so muted it may as well have been a cup of frothed milk. (See my previous review- Green Door Powered by Intelligentsia in LA ruined SD coffee for me!) Some good things are, they are super friendly, the ambience is cute (it's attached to a second-hand store and has a homey vibe), and they offer gift cards. I think it's incredibly important to support small, local businesses and with competition opening up recently next door, I find myself here more often than usual and often spreading the word to fellow South O'siders who become just as hooked as I am after their first latte at Captain's Grounds. My current favorite drink is a dirty soy chai. It's not too sweet, perfectly creamy with an extra kick of caffeine from the combo of espresso and chai - the best pick-me-up on a Monday morning. The coffee beans they use are bold and roasty, and remind me of the beans they use in Australia where everyone is a coffee snob and V60 pour overs are the norm. The outdoor seating is ample, the staff and owners are friendly and personable, and the vibe is always super laid-back. Cute little coffee cart located near the yoga studio. I wouldn't say the coffee was awesome, but it was good. I really looked forward to the vegan donuts that they sell here on certain days of the week but sadly they sold out before we even got there. We did have some toasted plain bagels with our coffee that were pretty soft in texture and reminded me more of toast than an actual bagel. They do offer almond milk which was good in my latte. Lines can be long, so be patient! Hopefully you are lucky enough to try a vegan donut! read more

My wife and I love this local coffee shop! We visit regularly and have yet to be disappointed, everyone is very laid back and it's a nice spot to enjoy a cup and a bagel. We love that they are pet friendly and our dog Gus likes to go and hog up everyone's attention. I've heard some others complain here on yelp but I'm sure if you just asked them to make it right if there was something you didn't like they would in a second. This place is so dope! In the morning the store doesn't open til 10 so its roped off. Giving me that sense of "untouchable"....making me pine away to enter all the more. Please sir....may i go??? Alas. No. *sigh* Several reviews say the coffe wasn't good but mine was spectacular. The guy working the barista spot was very friendly, and there were a lot of locals there, which tells me good coffee. Very reasonable price.
