Great eats. Had the clams with fries once and on a second visit the lobster roll with onion rings. The clams were fried well and had great flavor but with the fries, it was just too much grease for one day. The lobster roll was really good but I prefer a buttered Texas toast style. Mounds of lobster meat so I feel it was well worth it. I had the onion rings with this and they were okay. They are cut super thin and fried golden. The very thin cuts mean there is a lot of batter and grease which was just too heavy for me. I prefer a large onion slice. Overall the portions were big and the service was fast. The only place to eat is outside on some very worn picknick tables but on a good day byob and enjoy the fresh air. read more

The perfect lobster roll- it's loaded with meat and a little bit of mayo. The fried clam bellies are also great. An excellent roadside stop with lots of clean picnic benches, nice music from the co-op music next door, and a field of black eyes susans next to the road to soften the highway view. This venue offers a limited menu of seafood and chicken options. The standard Fish and Chips option is very good. It's exactly what you'd expect - fried white fish, french fries, and tartar sauce. Definitely something to come back to if you like this kind of dish. My first visit, I tried the Fish Tacos feeling the slaw mix would be healthier. What I found was that the fish and "taco" were smothered by the undressed shredded cabbage and a large branch of cilantro, which the Shack calls "slaw". The raw cabbage comes in abundance and can be overwhelming - I could barely find the fish! The cilantro seems more a burden than anything given it's right-off-the-plant nature. My recommendation: stick to the fish and chips and you won't be disappointed. The joint is BYOB, so bring along a six-pack of beers or a bottle of wine and the experience will be a good one! If you do take a visit, be advised that the parking lot is too small and seating is outside only (it is a shack after all!) I was pretty hopeful upon arrival. Everything looked pretty good and it has that authentic vibe that often is a precursor to tasty food. The lady and I shared a fish and chips, clam chowder, and two fish tacos. Fish and Chips: The fish portion was generous but lacking in flavor/spice. It was actually a little off putting, it tasted like there was cinnamon that was added to the batter... no bueno. Normally I would be a little disappointed at the paltry amount of tartar sauce that was served with the fish, but in this case it wasn't missed. Super bland and unremarkable, you guys really need to step up your game here. The coleslaw was also just meh... nothing special. The fries were the best part of this dish, pretty tasty, but I wish I had tried the onion rings, they looked pretty stellar. Clam Chowder: Pretty light on the clams and just so so, my local grocery store does a better clam chowder which I would find a little shameful if I specialized in seafood. Fish Tacos: These were by the far the best thing we had, generous fish portion, nice spice. In all honesty these weren't any better than the countless other fish tacos I've had, but way better than our other food. Stopped in for lunch today as they are new place to eat in Easthampton. I ordered the scallop plate and boy was it good. The breading on the scallops was very tasty and not too "bready" or thick. Just a nice thin coat of flavorful goodness. The order also came with a HUGE helping of hand-cut french fries, were were also very tasty. I'm excited to have a traditional "clam shack" type restaurant in town. Even better was that they bring the food out to your car so you don't have to stand in the cold to wait for your food. In the mood for fried clams and a drive, I decided to check this place out. I approached the window and was met with someone who obviously hates his job or was having a bad day. I ordered fried clams and it came with French fries and cole slaw. The price of $19 is way too high for the quality and quantity received. The cole slaw was gross- warm and lacked flavor. The fries were overcooked and greasy. The clams were a little greasy but not too bad. They tasted okay. The quality and quantity given shouldn't cost more than $13. $19 is just wrong. read more

Hands down the best whole belly clams I have ever tasted. Portions are huge, fries and onion rings are fresh cut and they always have fresh lemonade. Lobster rolls and clam rolls are overflowing wtih stuffings and come with heaps of their fresh cut fries. They just started serving fish tacos and have been offering a really tasty jalepeno limeaid all summer! It's got picnic tables for nicer weather or but they are open year round unlike many clam shacks around New England so you can get take out in the winter months. It's not cheap, a whole belly clam plate will set you back $17 but between the portion size and the freshness of the food, it's totally worth the price. read more

This is a great place to stop by during the summer days. I ordered the clams with coleslaw and fries, my friend ordered a chicken sandwich. the chicken sandwich was only mediocre, according to my friend. The clams were delicious and next time I would only get the clams without the fries and coleslaw. The portions given to us were hefty and enough to fill up. My friend who typically does not like seafood is now in love with the clams. Next time, I am going to ask for extra tartar sauce to dip in because it went quickly. The service was quick, the food came out very fresh. We went a little before dinnertime so there was only one other customer in front of us and plenty of tables to sit that were situated to the side of the shack. Due to the clams being a bit high in price, I'd only come back occasionally. If money and heart health weren't an issue, I'd be here multiple times a week. read more

Captain Jack's gets the award for hippest roadside shack in the area...plenty of tables -- some with shade, some in full sun -- badminton, super friendly staff, BYOB, thoughtfully-sourced high quality ingredients...they do SO MUCH right, but I have to say that the food for us has been a mixed bag. I'll admit, I went in with high expectations and glowing recommendations from very trusted friends, and I think I even declared it my favorite roadside shack as we were leaving from our first visit, but with subsequent trips came greater scrutiny. At $17 for whole belly clams, they need to be consistently good. The first time, they were out of this world...the next time, they were tiny and in large part inedible. And as a whole belly devotee, believe me, I tried. It takes a lot for me to give up and actually napkin a whole belly clam, but we're talking tough to the point of will-not-break-down-no-matter-how-determined-your-chewing. Also, while the onion rings are yummy, they are EXTREMELY greasy. Don't set the cardboard tray on anything that you can't get grease out of, because it is likely to soak through. This includes clothing, car upholstery, etc. That doesn't stop us from ordering them nearly every visit because, like I said, they are super yummy...but we have learned to just toss the bottom grease-laden and overly salted layer and just live with the waste. Ditto for the fries. Clam chowder is outstanding but would be better if the bacon fat were rendered more rather than left in big, limp chunks...but this is not a deal breaker. Favorites: fish tacos, clam chowder, onion rings, fish & chips, hot dogs. Had dinner here Saturday night. I had been hearing about this place forever from family and friends so I was super excited to try it! After checking out the board, kind of overwhelming and not very well organized, I decided on clam chowder and the fried clam platter. I was with a big group and most of them had the lobster roll. Someone had the scallop platter and my boyfriend had the fish and chips. We sat at a picnic table and waited for our food. I was surprised at how quickly it came out considering how much food we ordered. My clam chowder was good. It wasn't hot (temperature) just lukewarm. Not too thick but full of clams and potatoes. Not fishy and I'd probably order it again. My fried clams were good. Not overly amazing or anything. Just standard batter fried. You get a load of fries with the platters which is nice since they're really good fries. I'm surprised the platter is $17 considering even on the Cape it's not that expensive but I guess you have the extra cost of shipping fresh food from the shore into the mainland. I tried one of the scallops and I wish I had ordered them. Lightly battered and fried. So good. I'd like to go back and try the jalapeno limeaid. We hiked Mount Tom and went here for an early dinner after. I had high hopes and MAN did they deliver!! I ready all the great reviews for this fish tacos which I wouldn't normally order and am SO glad I did. I ordered a second of fish tacos to take home- that good!. Also, they were closing up to go to a catering job and made them for me in spite of being closed. So friendly! My hubby had the whole bellied clams. Only think I can say is amazing! We eat here pretty regularly and I always leave happy. The food is consistently good, family members and I all have favorites, and the sitting, eating, and hanging out vibe is really fantastic. It's right off the highway, but quiet and in a spacious field. Kids can run around while adults eat, if that's your group's profile. Bring your own drinks and enjoy. The burgers are really good. Not fancy like you'd get at any variety of Valley places, but also not cheap or small. Tasty and satisfying. The rotate specials and, in my experience, those are always a good choice. Onion straws are tasty. Thin and light and oily, but in the best sense. Very tasty and fun to share. Same with fries. Order and share! My personal favorite, by far, is the lobster roll. The lobster is fresh, always, and dressed/prepared nicely so that the lobster can shine, rather than, say, the dressing. Portions are hearty and on white bread, as it should be. Nice, fresh seafood choices, generous portions, reasonably priced. The onion rings are not what you're expecting, but they're good. Do yourself a favor and don't order fries or rings unless you're going to share them with others because the servings are really big. The coleslaw is average but okay. They don't give you enough tartar sauce so, if you like it, ask for extra. I haven't had the Fish Tacos but they look incredible. I once had Jalapeño Lemonade there too. It was great. I have to admit that the only reason I give Jack's 4 stars is because I hate their seating arrangements. Luckily, I arrived in Easthampton just a few days before Captain Jack's celebrated its grand-opening. I'm damn glad, 'cause this town wouldn't be the same without it. Captain Jack's Roadside Shack is literally a blessing for folks like me, who love American 'comfort food' but gag at the idea of pulling up at a McDonald's or Burger King. The food at Captain Jack's is freshly made to order, the meat is free-range and, I've heard, somewhat local, and the fries are house cut. And I'm sure they're not fried in lard, as they are in the McDonald's just a block away. The menu features classic American fare, reminiscent of what you'd whip up on the 4th of July: burgers, fries, and hot dogs. But the menu also features some really great seafood dishes that I can't wait to try: fried scallops, fish and chips, and more. I can't speak to those yet but the home made chicken nuggets, which come in a dish of 15 to 20 with a ton of french fries (for only 7 bucks), are DELICIOUS. They're just lightly breaded but they're so tender and juicy. And the fries are a great addition. The hot dog is also scrumptious! Although 3 bucks, the cost of one hot dog, could get you a pack of organic hot dogs from Trader Joe's, it's worth it to order one at Captain Jack's. It's just too tasty to pass up. The service here is also great. Everyone is very friendly and super efficient. They take your order in under a minute and the food is delivered in 5 minutes or less. Can't complain about that! Most folks seemed to take their food to go but it's a nice experience to just eat in the car with a friend and check out the great seating area next to the restaurant which will surely be utilized often as the warmer months approach. Can't get to end of summer without a fried clam roll. Smells so good here when getting out of the car, it made my mouth water. The food was good, not great, but solidly good. The clams were a little heavy on the breading and a little gritty, but the flavor was good. Fries were good too. And as always, I'm a fan of anywhere I can sit outside to eat in the summer. I could even bring my dog who lay under the table happily. They were very nice there and gave me a bowl for water for the dog. If in the area I would go back. We've been driving past Captain Jack's for a year now and I'm so glad we finally got a chance to stop. The food was so great. We got the fish tacos and onion rings. While the fist tacos weren't the tastiest tacos we've had, the fish was incredibly fresh tasting (maybe just missing a better sauce?). The onion rings were absolutely DEVINE.
