We met here because it was a midpoint from both our houses. The service and staff were very good. The food however was not very good at all. The eggs benedict was "the worst I've ever had " ( and he is 88!) and the sandwiches the rest of us had were not great. Visiting friends and we tried Jakes... To start,the service was excellent. They were attentative, friendly,and helpful. We had a local made soda and great food. They have real maple syrup that I highly recommend. My table was also thrilled over the thick cut and crispy bacon. My husband got an omelet with sausage in it that was very well made and noted he loved the potatoes it came with. Everything we ordered came out fresh,accurate,and very well made. Adorable spot in downtown Northampton! I've been to Jake's a number of times over the years, and it continues to deliver top-quality food every single time. I've never once been disappointed! Most recently, my boyfriend and I split a sweet-and-savory combo--the Downtown scramble and a stack of buttermilk chocolate chip pancakes--and it hit every craving perfectly. The pancakes were fluffy and rich, and the Downtown was hearty and well-seasoned. The staff is always so kind and welcoming, and the vibe is cozy without feeling cramped. Between the consistently great service and amazing food, Jake's remains one of my all-time favorite breakfast spots. "I'll trust in you And know that you Will wait for me" (Lennon and McCartney) Jake's (next door to the old Calvin Theater which has sadly closed) was jam packed when we arrived at 10:30 on a Sunday morning. It was a 45-minute wait before we were seated at an outdoor table. Our fantastic server, Amina, told us Jake's is always busy on the weekends because its one of the very few places in Northampton that serves a brunch type meal. Their menu reflects their 8-3 hours, so we saw plenty of eggs and hash dishes, plus french toast, biscuits and gravy, and breakfast sandwiches. If you don't want to go the breakfast route, have no worries because Jakes's has salads, burgers, sandwiches, tacos, chili, and bowls. They also have some specials hidden on the back of the drink menu, and we missed them completely. We ordered their breakfast tacos and they were fantastic. Each taco was a double corn tortilla packed with scrambled eggs, black beans and a delicious pico de gallo. I could have added a protein (one option was a soy), but I really didn't need it because the tacos were huge. And were a great bargain at just $8. My wife ordered a single buttermilk pancake ($7) with a chocolate chip upgrade ($1), and it was a pretty good sized pancake. The food was great, but I thought their $3.50 charge for a coffee or an iced coffee was a bit high. After finishing a race in the area, I was dying for sustenance, specifically, a burger. Jake's looked like it had plenty of options. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table, not bad at all, and we spent some time wandering around the area and looking at shops before our name was called. (They utilize the nifty Yelp waitlist, so you can track where you are in line.) Burger was simple but excellent (as someone who's not usually into red meat), held together okay, and had a tasty sauce. If you get all the options like my husband (guac, egg, bacon), it will absolutely require a fork and knife to eat, but I like to keep my burger simple and didn't have any issues with things plopping out along the sides. I was in the mood for fries but they only offered home fries, so went with cole slaw instead. Curry tomato bisque was solid, with a mild kick. I primarily wanted something hot. The table next to us was gushing about the hash and eggs Benedict, so if we're ever in the area again, I'll try that. Our waiter was super nice and food came out blessedly quickly. We were looking for a quick bite before a drive south and happened upon Jake's. It's definitely an unassuming place, a little greasy spoon hole in the wall. This place is amazing. They have the BEST eggs Benedict I have ever had. The first photo is the eggs Benedict I got 2 years ago and the second photo is the eggs Benedict I got today. They were both consistent in their flavor and their perfectly poached eggs. There are sun dried tomatoes, goat cheese, and garlic cloves in the dish and it is out of this world! I order the vegetable Benedict every time. I sat at the bar today and the service was excellent. If you have not been here before, you definitely need to. They serve both breakfast and lunch. Before I list the details of my experience and observations, let me be clear: this review is primarily linked to the staff's behavior and disorganization, and not as much about the food. I know it's tempting to see complaints about service and think "surely that won't be me," but you've been warned. Let me start by saying the food was okay. Not terribly offensive in any way. Just your typical diner breakfast fare; certainly nothing amazing enough to be worth the experience we (and many others around us) had. Now for the bad. Firstly, their waitlist is an utter joke; just a sheet of chicken scratch that obviously is just a massive guessing game. We put our name in for a table for 2, and the hostess told us it would be around 15-20 minutes (we also called 30 minutes before arriving, like they had suggested). There really have nowhere to wait inside, so we joined the group already waiting in the alleyway. As we stood outside, we noticed lots of people were getting angsty. Every few minutes the hostess would come outside and yell a name, and nobody in the group would budge. She kept rattling off names from her list that belonged to none of us, and we all kept exchanging glances in amusement. I started noticing groups of people giving up and walking away. We looked down and realized our 20 minutes were up, so surely they would be calling my name any moment now. Hostess comes back out again to call names with no owners, and then went back inside without even finding a party to fit the table. Finally I decide to go in, just to make sure she didn't accidentally cross off our names. I went in to ask, but they have an angry sign stating not to approach the register, and to wait to be greeted, so I stood there and waited like a good human. Finally, after the hostess walked past me multiple times without even making eye contact, I walked up to the register to ask how much longer. She couldn't find my name on the list until I found it for her. She quoted me just another 5 minutes (it had already been 30 at this point). I went back to my alley. Finally after FORTY FIVE MINUTES, she called our name and sat us at the worst possible seat in the house. No apologies for being almost triple the wait time we were quoted or thanking us for our patience. The teeny tiny table was placed right next to their bussing station, which for some reason wasn't in the back-of-house. This isn't necessarily a dealbreaker, except the employees weren't even trying to be gentle about it. They were banging and smashing dishes together like a package-handler on Christmas, and the sound was super painful and inconsiderate. Our server came over, and without even introducing herself, brusquely asked if we were ready to order. No "hey, have you dined with us before?" or "Could I help you out with any recommendations?" I asked her about the bussing station and questioned why they would place it in the front-of-house. She shot back at me that she is the front of house manager (still no name) and that has always been the location of the bussing station, as if my concern was that it may have been recently relocated. I had to yell over the noise, and explained that it is impossible to hear ourselves over the constant commotion, and asked for a better seat. She said verbatim "the dining room is full but you're welcome to get back on the list." I explained that we already patiently waited 30 minutes longer than their estimate, and that we really shouldn't have to get back on their list. Clearly she's a "fantastic" manager, because she completed glossed over the botched wait time, and said we could either try to find space to sit at the bar, or sit outside. We happily opted to sit outside, but I looked and saw that all 4 outdoor tables were filled. I asked which table we're supposed to take, and she told us that the people sitting at those tables LIKELY weren't eating there, and that they are probably just waiting for their names to be called. She said that we could just ask them to move. I was shocked. I would've left right then if we hadn't already been there almost an hour and were starving. So we relocated outside to tables that weren't wiped down and still had sticky crap stuck on them, but at least it was quiet. Miss "Manager" came back out a few minutes later and we ordered our food. She wanted to make sure that we knew what "bad customers" we are, so she said "I'll take your menus" and just stared at us. The menus were sitting right on the edge of the table already, and her hands weren't full. She just wanted to stare us down while refusing to pick up freaking menus! Unreal. Food came, and it was fine, but we were left alone and not checked on to refill drinks. People in the wait group kept giving up and leaving like before. No surprise. I might have even come back if the manager wasn't such a B***h and their organization skills weren't so abysmal. Do yourself a favor and don't gamble on this place. read more

Wow, bloody wow is all I can say.... In town from Charleston, SC visiting my wife's family and checked this awesome place out. The menu is huge !!! Something for every appetite. The fried oysters and shrimp were amazing and that's from someone who lives near the beach. The drinks are incredible also. We tried the mango / strawberry margarita and it definitely didn't disappoint so we ordered a pitcher of it. Best of all...the prices are surprisingly low and the service was spectacular. We were treated like family as soon as we walked in and our server Kayla didn't miss a beat. 5 Stars And 3 Thumbs Up From Us Highly recommend. 2025 Sep 6: We got here at 10:30 and there is a 15 mins wait. There are two unisex restrooms but they are in the basement. 1) hot chocolate 2) eggs and bakery sandwich 3) shahshuka. Twenty to twenty-five years ago, I frequently visited Northampton. It was one of the few places near me where you could try lots of different types of cuisine. It was the first town where I had Indian food and Thai food. I also had Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Argentinian, Vegan, and Mexican food there. I viewed Northampton as a place to widen my horizons, which explains why I had never eaten at longtime Northampton institution Jake's until today. When I searched "lunch" in Yelp for Northampton, Jake's came up No. 1. So Jake's it was. Jake's is in a cool old building near the classic center of Northampton intersection. We sat outside at one of a few tables. Our server was friendly. After reviewing the menu and eating the Jake's Burger I ordered, I would say Jake's seems to be more of an all day breakfast place that has some lunch sandwich options. My food was just OK. The burger came with grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and house sauce and I added on American cheese. I also ordered home fries since they don't have French Fries. My burger arrived and I noticed that they forgot the American cheese. I asked the waitress to take the cheese off the bill. She offered to have the cook add it and I declined. Even with the cheese, the burger suffered by comparison to other great burgers I have had recently. There was just nothing special about the Jake's Burger. The quality of the meat was fine, and it had no noteworthy color, seasoning or texture. The home fries were also underwhelming. There was no uniformity to the size of the potatoes. Therefore, some pieces were under cooked and some were fine. They were all under seasoned. I might try Jake's for breakfast if I'm in the area, but I fail to see how it's the Number 1 lunch option in Northampton. read more

Eight of us showed up at Jake's in shifts on Sunday about noon. We got a table immediately. I was shocked and very pleased. Our server, whose name I don't remember, was spot on. After everyone ordered coffee or tea we told him we wanted separate checks. Not a problem. I can't remember what everyone had but there were a few Jake's Breakfast Sandwiches (two fried eggs, shallots, spinach, fresh tomato, cheddar cheese on giant English muffins). Both were enjoyed with compliments. Paula had a giant blueberry pancake which she thoroughly enjoyed. When I go to a new, for me, breakfast joint I get eggs Benedict if they have them. I usually order the regular version because it says a great deal about the place. BUT they had an eggs Benedict that included sautéed greens (which I didn't get), and instead of Canadian bacon they had shallots, chopped bacon, and a delicious maple sauce on English muffins with perfectly poached eggs and a wonderful fresh tasting hollandaise sauce. Oh my Higher Power, whatever you conceive it to be!! A few days previously I had a Benedict on fried green tomatoes in Plymouth, MA that was my current best of breakfast. This wonderful meal had me reevaluating. Can't decide. Jake's has been around forever. I hear there is new ownership. Whatever the case may be you seriously need to try this place out. AND they had shakshouka...one of my previous favorite breakfasts. Next time. Please give this classic breakfast/lunch restaurant a try. You will not be disappointed. read more

Jake's was on our list during our weekend trip in NoHo but we were unsure how to coordinate given Yelp shows it's only takeout or delivery. Thankfully, during our morning bike ride around town, we saw a select amount of outdoor tables and thought we scored it big. We were right. Upon entrance, we were warmly greeted and seated. Our waitress was incredibly attentive, proactive and sure had a fantastic memory when we accidentally received a wrong order and she quickly solve it without our asking (we wouldn't have brought it up, understanding everyone is doing their best). We had a great dirty iced chai, iced mocha, hash of the day, shrimp Benedict and local toast with butter. Everything was super tasty and fresh. Went on a Monday by recommendation of a shopkeeper at Thorne's Marketplace. My partner and I were quickly seated in a very dimly lit dining room. Ordered our drinks and was served first tea with no spoon for stirring. Now here come THE food review. I ordered the Breakfast burrito... BLAND. Very little egg and all other ingredients which were sparce on seasoning. For the price I expected at least a bounty of fluffy scrambled eggs, instead I was greeted immediately with a sea of greenery and under seasoned potatoes. My partner got Jake's Eggs. The sausage was lacking with still a touch of pink in the under seasoned very unsavory griddled patty. His first bite was of the home fries, pieces undercooked while others edible. The eggs he likened to McDonald's as in an egg powder and disappointing in an egg presentation. Ordered an additional drink and was never delivered. We both left disappointed with our food and agreed we wouldn't be returning. A later jaunt to Local burger saved the day. read more

It is not my desire to hear all of the complaints that employees have about each other, their former customers, the reviews they get online and numerous other things that should not be discussed while you should be doing your job and serving customers. Be prepared for a wait. We arrived around 10 am on a Saturday in October. We were given a wait time of 30 min and it took about 25. I appreciate that they'll text you and you can see where you are on the waiting list. There's no room to wait inside so we spent most of the wait in our car as it was cold and wet and then we aired under cover nearby when it was almost our turn.
