Egg & I is definitely a nice local breakfast/lunch spot when you want something simple and cheap. My only qualm with this place is that the service is NOT good. I don't mind waiting when a waitress is at least recognizes that you've been waiting and comes over to the table to let you know that it'll be out soon and they apologize for the wait. There was just none of that unfortunately. I don't think this would stop me from going again, but I just need to remember that I will probably be waiting. read more

Delicious, traditional, local breakfast spot with New England charm which is to say be polite and you'll be treated nicely, but no one really likes you that much and you should know that before entering. New location, yes. But they still operate with paper tickets and have the same far-from-fast credit card machine situation when you check out. I came in here with my daughter recently and was sat promptly. Flagging someone down to take our order took no lie 20 mins. We got our food and no one returned to ask how it was. It was only meh, not worth their raised prices. Cheapest possible toast. Potatoes were undercooked. Corned beef hash was not crispy as requested. No one came around to refill our drinks. I observed the tables next to me: one waiting while flagging money around to signal it's time for the check. One dad with his daughters was told they were out of syrup (he had pancakes, they had French toast). He asked 3 waitresses and one took a syrup off another table and gave it to him. Why not have a syrup, ketchup, and menus on every table? After about 30 mins waiting for someone to come back, I stood up and went to the cashier to see if they could help us get our check to be on our way. That took 5 mins. Physically running the card took 5 mins. A quick 2 egg meal should not be a 1.5 hour long experience. It seems like they sit everyone as fast as they can and then just cant keep track of what's going on. No server sections, no food runners, no order to the madness whatsoever. For the high price, low quality, and absolutely horrendous wait times, I'm sad to say I probably won't be coming back here. read more

I was in the area and stopped in for lunch. Ordered patty melt with french fries. Burger was cooked just the way i ordered it and fries were average greasy spoon fries. I suggest sitting on the side of restaurant they call "the roost". The reason being is that i have been in this place twice and sat on the old side in front booths and was basically ignored for 15 minutes before a waitress came over. I would probably stop in if in area but would definitely not make a special trip here. I would hope that the waitress would at least smile next time or the tip i leave will definitely reflect on this. read more

This place is a great little place to catch breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday morning. The prices are cheap and food is always hot. I've always had the same great quality food and same great quality service. I've never had a problem with the waitresses or the staff as they have always been pleasant. While i do not have kids, I've observed the wait staff waiting on parties with children and I've never seen them be anything but accomodating. It is definitely a place that locals frequent but I think anyone could come off the street and would be welcomed. There is usaully a copy of the day's newspaper lying around somewhere if you fancy such a thing. This is a place you go when you know exactly what you want and you want it to taste exactly as you remember. After reading some of the other reviews, I feel people are expecting it be some type of haute cuisne. This place is not that. Egg and I is good quality food with consitent preparation and consistent service at reasonable prices. If you want foo foo chi chi move along! My only complaint about the place is the lighting. Everything is very dark in the restaurant. It makes the place feel a little run down. The aisles are also a little tight so for individuals with disabilities/wheel chairs, there might be an accesibility issue. read more

One of my favorite things to do is invade another town's local breakfast dive, order a standard "breakfast special" which always includes eggs, toast, bacon, potato...and sit back and observe the interactions between the staff and locals coming in for morning caffeine infusions while taking liberal advantage of my own infinite coffee refills. This place fuels my interest nicely. The real joy here is the people who come in and the people who work here...they're real townies and everyone seems to know everyone else by first name. It's a local dive in an old brick building that hasn't had a thought regarding its interior since the 70's...and I love it, right down to the funky banana-colored swivel seats at the bar. The nitty-gritty of it? The food passes. A "breakfast special" is my measuring stick for places like this and they make one that comes out fast and hot just fine. Prices are cheap too. For two people I got out of here for $15, including tip. I'll return for more people watching next time I'm in the area during breakfast hours. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but they really need to use fresher ingredients. First the good: I would give them 4 stars on service and price. They're good for families and large groups and there was no wait on a Sunday between 10 & 11. The place was cute and charming. The trivial pursuit on the table was a nice touch. The bad: Too bad all the trivial pursuit questions were written before I was born and every answer was Paul Newman. I would have to give them 1 star on their food. I had scrambled eggs, home fries and hash browns. Everything tastes like it had been frozen (i.e. freezer burn). I couldn't get through my meal. Maybe the pancakes and waffles would be better. Absolutely horrible service. We walked in sat down and got drinks right away. Awesome right? It gets good after that. A group of 4 people walk in 15 min after us. The waitress gets their drinks and brings it to them. I'm trying to call her over and she completely ignored me. Strike 1.Then goes back to that table and takes their order and doesn't come over to us. Strike 2. I continue to call her over and ignores me again and goes to cash out someone at the register and then goes into the kitchen still ignoring me. Strike 3. Continues to take in other people and ignored us. I then walk up to her and tell her this is awful service. And I get nothing. Besides all that the menu was basic. I have come here a couple of times for a quick and inexpensive breakfast. The staff is very friendly and attentive, the atmosphere is definitely a diner-style, sparse in decor, and is much larger inside than the outside appearance would have you believe. We had to park in the public lot across the street which was absolutely fine and convenient enough. The prices are extremely reasonable and typical of a diner fare. The breakfast potato option allows you to choose between home-fried potatoes and the hashbrown (shredded) style which is nice for those who prefer one over the other. The bacon was just "ok". Had a chewy, rubbery texture and very fatty. I prefer my bacon more on the crispy side but next time I will have to request that and see if there is improvement. The garden vegetable omelet was packed to my liking with a variety of fresh veggies and there was an appropriate amount of cheese. For my first, I was satisfied with my eggs, however this last time, the egg was soooooo, paper thin that it had no taste and barely held the veggies inside. So thin that I was unable to stab my fork into them to pick up. Overall, I left feeling satisfied and full. I will definitely go there again for the good prices and friendly service, with some slight modifications to my order that will hopefully enhance the enjoyment of my food order. read more

We live a short walk from this place and it has served us well over the last couple of years. Its nothing fancy at all, but cheap, and the food is consistently pretty good. We love the build-your-own breakfast sandwiches, we always get them on the Portuguese rolls and try them with different meat & cheese, as well as the egg. We also loved getting grilled muffins with butter. The coffee isn't amazing(we generally like really good, local coffee) but it's certainly not the worst I've had at a breakfast joint. I feel 1 star would be too harsh a punishment for this place as my qualms with Egg & I are (semi) few. We had what I'd call a decent dining experience but it's a far cry from what I expect when I go out for breakfast, mainly at the fault of the servers. We did not receive POOR service, per se; rather, we recieved little to none at all. We were sat promptly and our order was taken, but our food (an omelet and a breakfast sandwich) easily took 30+ minutes to arrive at our table. The restaurant was not packed and there was no wait yet we felt very ignored. Our drinks were not refilled and we were not checked on once. Our bill was brought to us but server after server passed by, failing to pick it up. Our server also used poor tactics such as placing her serving tray on our table while she dropped off our drinks which is a huge no-no, serving trays are filthy. As far as the food goes, it was bland at best. It was edible. Something I could have made at home, and better. "No frills" is an overstatement. Sure, come here, it's fine, but nothing more. They were boiled and then grilled - that's kinda the easy way out and flavorless. Hashbrowns were good but could be grilled a little longer maybe a sprinkle of seasoning.
