My grandparents introduced me to the diner and I have been going ever since! I love this place with all my heart, I truly do. BUT the new cook and waitress are just not okay. The food quality is terrible when Gus isn't the cook. Some of the food was overcooked and then other ones like pancakes were undercooked in some parts. I had egg shell in my eggs... how. When Gus is not around it seems like it's a hangout club for the regulars. The hangout part isn't a bad thing at all, I find it to be a bad thing when the waitress is yelling through the diner about VERY inappropriate things. I do not plan on going back if I see either of them running the show. I am very disappointed with my last few experiences here. It's hard to understand how this place has four stars on Yelp right now. I'm just glad to be alive and to not have food poisoning. The bar can't be dropped much lower than this greasy arm pit. Location: awful. Ambiance: awful, but great if you like to see what the dirtiest diner in Western Mass looks like. Service: awful -- surly, terse hostess, making customers ill-at-ease. Food: ham was good but home fries were like a collection of greasy cigarette butts from inside a degenerate gamblers' all-nighter ash tray. You don't need this in your life. And, you're welcome. Picked Al's out as a good place to stop while traveling, it was the 1/2 way point on our trip. The food was very reasonably priced and it was and authentic diner. I think it might have been Al himself cooking. We had a blueberry pancake with a fried egg on the side , the pancake was huge and very tasty. The egg was cooked just right not too dry or too runny. The grill cheese sandwich was fine very basic no chips no pickle nothing extra. The breakfast sandwich was interesting as I think the cheese was something similar to spray cheese from a can not sure whatever it was it was really processed and probably a "cheese food". This place is fine for what it is, not some place I need to go back to. The waitress was really good, someone asked her to watch their pocketbook so she put it on her shoulder and continued to wait on the tables. read more

I am so surprised this place is still open, I went in here to eat years ago and they served me rotten meat ( I ordered the country fried steak and eggs. the meat smelled so bad I wanted to vomit, when I told the waitress she smelled it and agreed. she took my order over to the owner that was sitting in a both and showed him; he picks it up and says he just bought the meatit.. it's fresh, the waitress said, but it smells bad. he told her to be quiet and do her job. Very very decent place! I visited this restaurant on a monday at 645pm only to discover they closed at 6pm... so I am going to dispel my "wisdom" to future Al's go-ers via photos! They close at 6pm mondays, 7pm most other days. I arrived soon after 5pm on a Thursday to make sure I wasn't late this time! I finally realized that I should seat myself, and that menus were on the table (after standing in the doorway for a minute....awkward...). Nothing on the menu is more than $6ish which is crazy cheap. I was going to help myself to a daily special (I like that they are listed, so I do not have to call each day to hear what they are! (These, and the rest of the menu, I have included in pictures. Nothinggg is more annoying than not knowing the menu before showing up to a place!) This is where Al's Diner lost a star... I was going to order the stuffed pepper. But they (waittress and cook (who turned out to be her mom (very cool! heart family run places!) didn't know if the meat was beef or pork or what... Apparently the grandmother made it, and they didn't know. (Doubly cool to have three generations!) But I do not eat any pork. So this was a deal breaker for me. But then this knocked off my second choice... spaghetti and meatballs. I opted for something safe: chicken parmesan, and chicken rice soup. The soup was just alright, looked homemade, nice chunks of chicken, heavily souped up rice. It was decent enough, and cheap ($2 with tax). The chicken arrived extremely quickly too (granted there was a table of four, and only one other person at the counter, but still). IT was a nice full cutlet, a good heaping of spaghetti, and lots of sauce.... lots of meat sauce. The last thing I wanted to do was be rude.... so I didn't even ask what was in the sauce. But lady... I just passed up on TWO dishes with chopmeat in it because I don't know what's in it... and you neglect to tell me the chicken parm has meat in it??? Come on. I just tried to avoid it entirely.. .which sucks because I enjoy lots of sauce..... The conversation was good, talked to my waittress and the cook (her mom) and some random guy who said he was the dishwasher (Jay?) and said that I should remember him... which was amusing becuase I had just told them all (besides him) that it was my first time there. It was cool, amusing. They told me about how upcoming local bridge work will make getting daily customers harder, so they weren't even taking their usual vaca... which also means odd closing times for a couple days in the summer (maybe call ahead?) OVERALL: Good people, very cheap food (incl tax: $2 soup, only $6 chicken (another reason why I wasn't about to be rude and send it back) = decent place. Rather limited menu for my tastes, but your usual good hot, cheap food from a diner, I guess. It lost a star because of the lack of hot dinner options (the only time I would be able to come by) and the whol meat sauce incident). ...........Just make sure you don't care about what animal you're eating... because they probably won't know... read more

Was looking for a breakfast spot in the area and came upon this diner. After reading some reviews, I was looking forward to some nice food with an even nicer atmosphere. Unfortunately only one of those things came true. I ordered the Breakfast Special along with some Texas French toast. And of course, some coffee as a beverage. There was only one server and one cook from what I could see so it was no issue for me to wait a bit longer than normal to get my order taken and food delivered. Home fries were seasoned well and the ham was tasty. The toast was toasting and crunchy, just how I like it. The French Toast though? Oh boy was that good. It sort of reminded me of a Vanilla Custard but in French Toast form and I was loving it. Now we get to the unfortunate part. Service was lack luster to say the least. Both myself and my other patron were probably the only ones to not have been viewed as regulars. After the initial order taking and subsequent food delivery, that was the last we heard from our waitress. Understandable to some extent if the place was popping off the walls. But personally a few minutes taken from chatting with the regulars to ensure the other new customers have a refill of their beverage or even to ask if they need anything else would've bumped this review up a star or two. But we were one shade away from being invisible from the two regulars on either side of us. If you're looking for a bite to eat and don't mind that type of service then by all means, head here. If you value something like that, then maybe look elsewhere. But for me anyway, I'll probably not head back when there are other options that'll do what they do but better. I go to Chicopee twice a year and always stop by Al's Diner to purchase two French Canadian meat pies with gravy, to take home. The meat pies and gravy are exceptional! If you have never had traditional "tourtiere" French meat pie, please try Al's. They are incredibly good and filling. The price is very reasonable, as well. It's $ 14.00 for a 9 inch pie and $ 1.00, for a cup of gravy (as of Oct. 2018). $5.25 for a slice on site. The best part of an Al's Diner visit is the people who work there. Al is the cook and Becky, his Mom works in the back. You have Lori and Mary-Ann out front. They are always welcoming and friendly and have been very nice to me on each visit over the years. This is a special place and I can't recommend enough that you give it a try. Tell them that you read the review from "that meat pie guy from Boston." lol :) Enjoy and I hope this helps. read more

This is a real dinner experience nothing in there has been touched since 1958. What I mean by that somebody going to go in in the 70s or the 80s and got it and turn it into something else it's always been a neighborhood diner. I know I grew up right over the bridge in Holyoke mass. When I was young like 4 or 5. The diner was open much later my dad would take me plowing snow piling that is when you're clearing the streets of all the beautiful snow any come over here to get a hot chocolate hey pound on the wall his from the 40s all the beautiful stainless steel everywhere is wonderful. The food portions are huge the cook really knows what he's doing in the diner settings, The waitress knows the locals name knows what they're going to have to eat. I thought the food was extremely delicious a big blueberry pancake, I ordered two eggs they come with health and gave me three eggs over easy and they were perfect and some toast, Good night Jose up though it was not pure maple syrup and I really didn't expect that and this type of setting. In my career I've been able to eat at some of the best restaurants in the country, I lived in California had a really good friends and we would drive 100 200 miles to get a pot pie a great chicken pot pie no filler fantastic. Food: Repulsive grease sodden leather burger with unidentifiable cheese-food-product, and soggy onion wrings in a puddle of rancid oil, flung onto the table by a teenaged server who hated us for existing. Guess what? Some diners really suck. This is one. High volume commentary from staff about how much they hate their jobs was entertaining. View of stinky mop and bucket plonked in the middle of the food prep area somewhat less so. Somebody burn this place down before somebody gets hurt. Update: I see that someone named Donald thinks I'm an arrogant capuccino drinking Boston 'vagina' (that's really classy Donald) who is somehow geographically disqualified from evaluating food and service. I have fond memories of pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream and smiley face bacon and eggs. unfortunately, nostalgia couldn't keep me in this place for longer than five minutes. my feet stuck to the floor upon entering, the menu handed to me was slimy with grease and stained with ketchup and coffee, and the server that should have been taking my Togo order was busy ripping chunks off of a honey ham on the counter that she shoved into her mouth, the same ham they were slicing for meals. Great diner. Great breakfast , I have been there 3 times. Never disappointed. Prices are super cheap for the amount of food you get. There are only 6-7 tables and about 10 seats at the counter. This place can fill up very fast and has been fairly busy when I went on weekday mornings but when I drive by on the weekend it looks packed. Great "typical american diner " experience. So decided to stop in on the way back from UMass because I saw some pretty good reviews looked at the menu and saw that Sunday they offered roast stuffed turkey. That would be worth the side trip. When we walked in we got a look up and down by the staff. Who weren't in any rush to seat us. What are you looking at? Well obviously the menu has changed since the posting of the menu on yelp they only serve breakfast and they're only open till 1 o'clock on Sunday OK no big deal a little disappointing but OK Another review said that their the corned beef was great I figured I'll go with my back up I did see a big smoked ham that they use for the egg dishes but I figured I'd go with the Hash because of the reviews Mistake The corn beef hash looked like mush, it actually looked like they took some hash from a can put it in the blender and threw it on the flat top .....gross Not a clean place read more
