Wanted something light as this was a wellness appointment so didn't want to feel full, but also something I could eat after. So hotdogs and chowder it was. They didn't have chowder at first so went with two cheese dogs and as I was checking out they had it so bought some as well. Loved the buttered grilled buns. Dogs could have been crispier for my preference but cheese needed to be on there longer to get more melted. Good flavor with the chowder but needs more filling, I like it thick. I am not up this way often but looking forward to next time and trying something more meal like than a quick snack. read more

I had heard about Captain Jack's from several people, and was craving a lobster roll, so made the 30-mile trip. Not an easy place for my GPS to find, as it's hidden from the road. Plenty of parking, and very impressed with the outdoor seating (some covered, some exposed). Order and pay at one window. Pick up at another. Busy place early afternoon, but my wait time only about 10 minutes. Lobster roll excellent, the smallish bun being overstuffed. I ordered the onion rings instead of fries and was disappointed that they were NOT onion rings. Onion strings (or some people call them onion straws) were given. Large mass of oily straws. Open year-round, although reduced hours off-season. Interesting menu, with various hot dog, chicken, and seafood options. I would rate the lobster roll as 4.5, and the glob of onions as a 2.5. Nicely buttered roll with so much lobster you have to eat some of it before you can even pick this roll up. And not just claws like some places this was all solid lobster meat. $30 with fries- wish we remembered to opt for the onion straws (next time). Lobster was tender and flavorful with not an over abundant amount of mayo just the tiniest bit to hold everything together and it was tender, flavorful, and overall delicious. For a roadside shack, the seafood served was not shabby. Lots of choices, and I went with the whole clams. You can tell a restaurant cares for its quality when the breading is crispy and flavorful without the bitter taste of bad oil. You know what I mean, the food smells and tastes like fried garbage. That is not the case here. It almost appears that these delicious morsels were air fried and you could savor the freshness of the clam itself. The hand-cut shoestring fries were perfect, without those annoying burnt bitlets that tend to infiltrate other lesser "shacks". This place is great. We had a hard time figuring out how to access it, because it shares a parking lot and an outdoor seating area with the coop grocery store next door (which I'm surprised most of these reviews don't mention). You can go into the co-op for cold beers (even white wine) to go with your meal. And they have a nice selection of chocolate and other items for dessert!! We had the lobster roll with onion rings, the clam platter with fries and a $5 Chicago dog that I didn't have room for. I've coming here for a few years already and finally decided to officially review it. Whole belly clams are plump and juicy and the fish tacos are delicious. Plus you get two tacos per order. What a deal! I love the contrast between the cold crunchy cabbage/cilantro and hot crispy fish. The belly platter comes with a small side of coleslaw and fries but you can substitute the fries for the onion rings for only $.50 more. It's worth it! Their haystack style onion rings are super skinny and tasty. Portions are generous too! Lobster rolls are great with nice large lump and claw meat. However, I would recommend to go when the lobsters are in season between June and December so the meat is sweeter. Outdoor seatings are plentiful but in the winter, you can sit inside the river valley co*op market next door. Service is friendly, quick, and simple. One window for ordering and one to pick up. There's a certain romanticism behind the idea of being in New England, stopping by a roadside seafood shack, ordering a Lobster Roll and sitting outside while enjoying the Summer breeze. Actually, that's probably on a lot of people's bucket list. I only recently found out about this place thanks to Yelp, but it was a little confusing because even though there was a sign for Captain Jacks, we couldn't visibly see it from the roadside. All you could see was the River Valley Co-Op, and even while driving around the parking lot, we had to ask someone to find out that it was located behind the building. An additional sign in the parking lot would've been helpful. You form a line and order at the window and wait for your number to be called. Depending on what you order, it could be a good deal or very expensive. On this visit a lobster roll was $30 and it came with hand cut fries. I never finished the roll even though I ate from it and both my mom and dad ate from it too. The scallops were good but being a Floridian and having had many scallops in my lifetime, this wasn't the best I've had but again, it was good. We also had the fish and chips and those were just ok. I wish the fish had been a little bit more crispy, or maybe that's the NE way? I think the little onion rings were better than the fries. Overall the food to me was just ok. Sunday lunch at Captain Jacks exceeded all expectations! Went there for the lobster roll substituted onion rings for fries. The Lobster roll easily had enough lobster to make rolls, delicious and so generous on the portions. The onion rings where thin shoestring which I absolutely love. Jacks is in a small building, with outdoor seating only which is shared with neighboring Ri er Valley Coop; the dining area is covered which is nice as it was very sunny the day we were there. There is lots of outdoor seating. The servers are friendly, efficient and helpful in making choices. The lobster roll was overflowing with tail and claw meat in a delicate mayonnaise blend. Not too much....served with a nice wedge of lemon. No it wasn't fresh lobster but being 120 miles from the coast what can you expect? The volume of this nicely grilled roll with green leaf lettuce was more than worth the price. I had to knock off lobster just to pick up the roll to eat it. The onion strings melted in my mouth. So good. The clam plate ($27) was just as delicious. Perfectly cooked whole belly clams with hand cut fries, slaw and tartar sauce....of course a side of lemon wedge. This was a larger portion and cheaper than what cape cod prices were. Staring at Mt. Cole slaw was good. The fish was kind of dry but not over cooked - the breading was a little soggy. The whole bellys had a different taste. Not necessarily spoiled but not really fresh. Odd aftertaste which I thought may be the oil not being fresh. About an hour later, both me and my lady had diarrhea. I'm not positive it was the food, could have been the Dunkin coffee. OK, everything I've had here is delicious--fish fry, hot dogs, crispy chicken sandwich, fries, slaw-- but honestly, my #1 favorite thing on the menu? The thing I dream about and will come here just for? The onion rings. I feel like "rings" is a smidge inaccurate because they are cut so finally that the only thing keeping them from being "strings" or shoelace style is they somehow manage to (mostly) remain intact end-to-end. They are fried perfectly, seasoned perfectly, and are utter heaven for people who like salty crispy light things. Also: servings are ridiculously generous, you can bring your own beer, the picnic tables closer to the trees are in shade and there's a view of the Mt Tom/Holyoke range, and it's all set back far enough from the road to feel peaceful.
