Kelly and Me!
Jen R.

This review is specifically for the Love is a Drag Valentine's Day Brunch at Cafe Whitney. My friend and I reserved a 2-person table about one month in advance. It was $20 per person to attend, paid via Eventbrite ticketing. We arrived at 10:30am and received a wrist band and waited in a brief line. The line moved quickly and they already had my name and table ready. We were promptly seated and our drinks taken. Of course we ordered bottomless mimosas. The staff was very efficient. Drinks served and food orders taken. We both had the burrito ahogado - three eggs, cheese, black bean pureé, pico, avocado, smothered in ranchero salsa & crema and served with potatoes. There is an option of chorizo, bacon or sausage. I had the chorizo and my friend went with no meat. These burritos were hugely delicious. I wound up making mine into three meals with the leftovers. We both would order again. Cafe Whitney actually has a really nice brunch menu so definitely might try something new on our next visit. Our waiter was prompt with both our food and refilling carafes of mimosas. Always appreciate good service, especially when bottomless mimosas are involved!! :-) Next... the drag queen show. Fabulous! The dancers were beautiful in makeup, hair and dress and kept us laughing! Bring your $1 bills for tips. We did not know they took dancing tips but fortunately we had some cash on hand to join the fun. The MC was engaging and entertaining and kept the crowd excited. The DJ spun lots of great, upbeat fun tunes. There were several men there with their girlfriends/wives and they seemed to really enjoy the attention they got and played along. My late husband would have truly enjoyed these queens and the positive energy! A fun time for everyone. We sure are glad we booked early in advance as it sold out shortly thereafter so be sure to get your tickets early on. Highly recommend!

Great food and service! Love the look of the restaurant that feels Classy, fancy, but not "hoity-toity". Didn't need reservations and was sat right away. Has large tables, so great for larger parties. Great spot to eat or drink before a show at Cargo and has a locals discount. Fair prices and the food met my expectations. Open slightly later than other restaurants downtown. Highly recommend and I will be back.

First time dining here for brunch. They had some good options on the menu and I ordered the breakfast burrito with chorizo. This was definitely on the larger side and barely finished it. They do offer bottomless mimosas as well, so that's a plus! I would come back again for brunch. I'm a big fan of their happy hour as well. Several cocktails and appetizers are half off!

Been awhile since I last reviewed Cafe Whitney. An update is in order. We have been back a number of times since it is a block from home and is a good spot to go when we don't feel like cooking. We came recently to get a bite before going to a show knowing that they are usually very quick in getting orders out. I had the pasta with sausage and a good not too sweet mocktail. My husband had the roasted half chicken. Both meals were good and portions were generous. The service was good, orders taken and food brought out in a timely manner. They were not very busy and most patrons were at the bar. It is a good neighborhood spot for a nice meal.

Delicious food, beautiful atmosphere and friendly staff. Tom was the best server I've ever had :)

My friend and I came here for the Valentine's Drag Brunch and it was so much fun! The mimosas kept coming, the food was great and the performances were outstanding. Such a fun and happy vibe!

Scored a last minute Thanksgiving reservation here last night. The place was delightful, staff friendly and overly accommodating. Our server crafted a special mocktail for me since I am sober. Valet service was a pleasant surprise as well. I chose the Thanksgiving meal with pork and the gingerbread cookie. The food was delicious, I was not surprised. The restaurant is delicately decorated, and gives off an upscale vibe in a quiet way. The staff were extremely attentive checking in with us more than necessary, making sure we had everything we needed. Unfortunately I forgot to take too many photos, so I'll attach the few I have. Thank you Cafe Whitney and staff!

Great food and a great wine list . Great Happy Hour!

Tom is the best!!!! Menu is great and the service is the best. A downtown secret. Flatbread Pizzas are good as well as the Caesar Salad.

We went for breakfast on Saturday and were able to get in quickly. Staff were efficient and friendly serving us right away. Breakfast menu isn't big but should have enough options for everyone. The portions were decent size and none of us were disappointed. Recommend the Bloody Mary which usually comes with a slice of bacon, so let them know if you don't want it.

Came here for Thursday salsa dancing with Gerzon -- it's a free class so support the establishment! Can't beat free dance lessons 'n party! and the servers are super patient with us dancers!

Had the pleasure of sampling the new spring menu at Cafe Whitney recently and I will say the chefs and staff brought their A game! The restaurant is beautifully and located in the heart of downtown located right next to the renowned Reno sign. I tried their strawberry margarita, jambalaya, vaquero fries, and more. The sample menu was so delicious that my fiance and I had to try their ramen and salmon from their main menu, and they were also superb. I highly recommend Cafe Whitney if you are in town and would be interested to hear what you think about their dishes.

Short Ribs of Beef with Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Monica S.

Food: The short ribs of beef were tender and very well seasoned and the garlic mashed potatoes were delicious. It came with a vegetable but I opted out. My husband had the salmon fish and chips and coleslaw. My husband and I were really shocked that the salmon fish and chips were as good as they were. My husband is part British and very particular about his fish and chips which are usually made with a white fish but the salmon was delicious and I concur. I did not have the coleslaw but he said it was also delicious. The serving size of the fish and chips was pretty good size. The short ribs were an adequate size and I'm sure with the vegetable pretty filling. Ambiance: I loved the ambiance of this restaurant. It was well lite, modern, clean, and spacious. Great decor and lots of televisions in the bar area for the sports enthusiast to enjoy a drink while watching the game. Service: The service was great. The food was served fresh, hot an quick. The server was pleasant and professional. The server recommended the salmon fish and chips and he was right. Parking: Parking is across the street in a parking garage. I stayed the night at the hotel so I dont know if there is additional charge for parking when not at the hotel. Overall: Beautiful restaurant great for meeting after work, dinner with friends or a date night. The menu is varied and sophisticated. It has everything from quick late night pizza to salads and soup to entrees such as chicken picatta, steaks and pan roasted salmon. The service was good and the food was delicious and well balanced in seasoning.

Really enjoyed this evening. Tried a few new dishes . Pork belly bao buns were the hit. Until the white chocolate risotto hit the table. Decadent and delicious. Our servers were the best . It was quiet enough the have a pleasant conversation. It was a very enjoyable dining experience.

Undercooked almost doughy crust.

It was our 1st time eating there however it had been on our list for some time. We started with the PULL-APART GARLIC CHEESE BREAD which is Focaccia, mozzarella, marinara, parmesan, frico crust and also ordered the WOOD FIRED OCTOPUS with crispy gnocchi, tomatoes, red onion, basil, arugula and topped with a Calabrian chili aioli. Both were fantastic, seasoned nicely and cooked to a perfect temperature!! For our entree we hate the BEE STING pizza. Make with a 72 Hour Fermented Organic Dough topped with Salami, red onion, basil, serranos, mozzarella and honey. The crust was delicious, crunchy, thin and when combined with the sauce, seasoning and toppings, an excellent pizza. Additionally we ordered two of the in-house, housemaid pasta. The ARRABBIATA , a roasted red pepper campanelle, with Calabrese sausage, garlic, chilis, broccolini and topped with Parmesan, pecorino. The other pasta we tried was the BLACK SPAGHETTI, mixed with clams, scallops, shrimp, hot chopped peppers, white wine, butter and lemon. It was fantastic!! Cooked al dente and packed with flavor. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. The service was great, food was yummy and we definitely look forward to going back again soon!

The cauliflower was one of my favorites, roasted perfectly with great flavor, Fondue was creamy, hot and delicious, meatballs were super moist and bursting with flavor. I enjoyed the bee sting pizza, hot and sweet, and I love the combination. When I go back it will definitely be pizza, salad and cauliflower. The sever was a sweet young man. He was attentive to our needs and patient with all our questions. The restaurant is a good size, the bar area was busy and filled with conversation and laughter, the booths looked cozy, we chose a table near windows for outside lighting. The outside tables looked great for getting some warmth and fresh air. Many options and different settings. Sorry, I forgot to take pics.

When we showed up, we asked if we could sit at a table outside, the guy was a little overwhelmed, he said "I can sit you in 10 mins". I said "can we have this table". OK, but....just know I'll be with you as soon as I get caught up, I'm totally fine with that I said. . He bought us a couple menus to look over. Then a table on the railing with shade opened up, I didn't care about the table was dirty with dishes, so we decided to move. I love to look at the river and watch the people go by. The server said, I'll be over soon! He was never so happy when Sierra showed up to help him out. He came over to our table I said "I hope you don't mind, I moved to be in the shade, I know I'm one of those pain in the ass customers". Then he started joking with me and it was the perfect ice breaker. My server and part owner's name is Casey! He is an awesome guy and such a hard worker to ensure his customers are taken care of. I love that. We had a couple beers, he has quite the selection of beers on tap, he supports the community breweries such as Lead Dog and Revisions. My husband had the breakfast burrito $13, it was huge with homemade tortilla chips with salad and guacamole. I had the fish and chips. You get three large pieces of fish, fries and yummy coleslaw. I love how they put the tater sauce and ketchups in personal cups for you that shows class. My fish was absolutely delicious better than the old Smees and especially the new location. You get a nice meal for $20. They have indoor, outdoor, bar seating. They have a little merch area and a gaming bar if you feel lucky. I know the Open Championship Bowlers are in town, if you're looking for nice comfort food "tavern style" location this is the place for you on the Reno Riverwalk 50 N Sierra. It upstairs.

The drinks were great and tasty, but the bruschetta honestly fell a little flat - the portion felt tiny with four small raw white bread medallions and just some diced tomatoes tossed on top with a drizzle of balsamic that I overall didn't have much taste and felt lacking as an attempt at bruschetta but it was no big deal and we moved on. We also ordered the filet tips with gnocchi that took a little longer and came out with the main entrees and it was delicious. The filet tips were savory and flavorful, the gnocchi was excellent and the sauce was rich and creamy. My wife ordered the chef's pasta which turned out to be a shrimp pasta that she really enjoyed, and I ordered a spicy sausage rigatoni pasta that looked amazing but unfortunately fell short - it had a little bit of spice and everything was cooked perfectly but the noodles and meat tasted plain and the sauce was quite bland and watery and lacked any sort of seasoning. We asked for some salt which made it a little better and I finished it but would probably not order it again. Lastly, we topped the night off with the banana foster which couldn't miss. It was extremely delicious and was the perfect end to the meal. The service was exceptional and extremely pleasant which honestly boosted the experience. There was a large loud party happening and drinks and food were taking quite a bit to come out, but our server was amazing, charming, and attentive. They apologized and comped our drinks without even having to say anything and made us feel welcome and comfortable. I would come back for the service alone. The eating area is very spacious and commodious. Though this place has a casual vibe, the presentation of the food is totally fine-dining material. Each dish, especially the Citrus glazed salmon, is served as a piece of art. I've been here around three times before I installed yelp, and am excited to finally leave a review. The short rib, was absolutely amazing. The short rib was so tender, and each brussels sprout was a literal flavor bomb. The brussels sprouts I've had at other places have flavor only on the exterior, whereas the brussels sprouts here play a different game. The short rib is served in a really big portion. Though it may look dark from the photos, there are actually three big pieces. I loved loved loved the sauce; there's a sweet tangy taste to it, though it reminded me a lot of BBQ sauce. This short rib was a win. Chefs kiss. The truffle lasagna was terrific; so much sauce in between the lasagna layers. I could absolutely make out the truffle flavor in this dish. However, I recommend eating this dish quickly, as the lasagna stiffens really quickly. Thirty minutes after it was served, I went it to take another bite, and it wasn't as good anymore. The ceasar salad +beef is a great choice for a light but filling meal when you're currently on a healthy diet. Each dish here comes in giant portions, but even after you finish this salad, it won't feel too heavy on your body. I think it's because Washoe is really light on the dressing levels; perfecting the amount so it doesn't overtake the fresh flavor of the greens or leave the salad bland and insipid. However, the beef was a bit too well done and on the firmer side. The first time coming here, I was totally shocked to find out that the food they served did not match the relaxed and informal vibe the setting sets up. Not a bad thing at all. Creates a laid-back vibe while still getting high quality food.

A good decision. It always felt a bit cramped to check in in the bar area especially when they are busy. Dining area is now mostly in the back room. We tried 4 different appetizers. My favorite was the shrimp lettuce wraps 5/5. They were messy to eat, but the flavors are really nice. The chicken tacos were also good with the coleslaw crunch. The potstickers themselves were more a 4/5 for me with the sauce being better than a lot of others I've tried. There were about thirty of us, accommodated by sliding multiple tables together, which was nice. However, as only ONE server was assigned to us, it gave her a busy night; but she (didn't get her name) handled it with good humor, skill and a lot of genuine smiles. I ordered chicken parmesan, which when delivered had been pounded thin, breaded and fried and served with a little spaghetti. Overall, I found the dish to be OK, but IMHO a bit pricey and not something I'd recommend to others. My BIG problem was finding a thin metal "ribbon"-like thing in my entrée. It was about four inches long and one end was coiled as tight as a spring. To me, it looked to be the result of aggressive knife sharpening. Our server wasn't around at the moment, so with the urging of a couple fellow diners, I called a man over who seemed to be assisting her. When I showed him the object, he said he thought it came out of their dishwashers (?) and he was sorry it got into my meal. He took the "ribbon" and left, looking for a manager, I thought. When our server began handing out our individual bills, the man hadn't returned, so I spoke with her instead. When I described what I had found, she looked genuinely shocked, so obviously the other guy hadn't shared the information with her. I told her that I was grateful I hadn't swallowed the spring, but I still felt a discount on my meal would be appropriate. When I was given my bill, a 25% discount had been applied to my entrée, or about $6.75. I didn't feel satisfied, but we had now been sitting for well over an hour and I needed to get up and walk off the stiffness in my leg muscles. Speaking ONLY for myself and not the group, I won't be returning.
