Another visit to the Spot, one of our favorite casual downtown riverfront restaurants! Came in for a dinner on Tuesday evening before a show at the Pioneer Center. It wasn't very crowded and our server grabbed our drink orders before we sat on the patio to help expedite the process. They always have a good selection of drafts and my wife was excited to find a sour beer was available. Our server was quick to grab our order, we overdid it a bit in hindsight :) We ordered the firecracker shrimp appetizer, the Wedge Salad, and the Chicken Gyro with Fried Pickles. Everything was great with the exeception of the fried pickles, which I wouldn't recommend. Too much fry, not enough pickle IMO. The Gyro meal itself would have been enough for both of us, but still glad we enjoyed the full spread. Can't go wrong at the spot, I will be back again soon! read more

Had a chill Saturday with my husband and decided to take a walk to this place (from el dorado) It used to be a seafood spot so I already knew wha to expect with the atmosphere and the river view. What I didn't expect was the food to be this great. Yes, it's bar food but it's upscale bar food. We enjoyed everything no complaints at all. My husband got the fish and chips, he said it was a little oily but had lots of flavor and wasn't dry. I ordered the double smash burger and it surpassed my expectations with flavor. They were tasty-plenty of poke to wonton ratio and the sauce was the perfect touch. My friends had the quinoa salad and the smash burger and both enjoyed those as well. My mom had an appointment off of Wells Avenue and we're pretty hungry by the time it was over so I looked on Yelp for some lunch options. I was definitely in the mood to try something new. After some searching The Spot is what caught our eye. Located by the river and where Reef and Smees used to be. including what you ordered or used, Since this was a new spot we decided to just order and share a ton of appetizers. This included: cup of cream of mushroom soup, pretzel bites, spinach dip, poutine fries and Brussel sprouts. 2/5 were a huge hit where the orders we would not try again. Cup of mushroom soup: cup size is a good appetizer portion, good mushroom taste but WAY too salty. Would not order again. Pretzel bites: SUPER YUM! Slightly crunchy at the corners and fluffy inside. Perfectly bite sized and great dips (cheese and mustard). Loved these and would absolutely order again. Spinach dip: not a fan. The one thing I did like about this is that the dip portion was extremely generous, but I was not a fan of the taste. For me it was like slightly watered down sour cream. You have the options of chips or baguette. We went with baguette and for the first time in my life, the dipping vessels were very scant compared to the amount of dip so if anyone orders this, I would recommend it with chips. Would not order again. Poutine fries: YUM! Definitely a shareable portion. Thin fries topped with yummy breaded cheese curds and piping hot gravy this was my favorite thing. The gravy was perfectly salted and I loved the breaded cheese curds. I do wish the fries were thicker, like a wedge cut but honestly these were insanely good. Will order again. Brussel sprouts: made with bacon which is always a must for that yummy flavor. Also drizzled with balsamic which is a win in my book. These were very tender and delicious but very oily or greasy which kind of gave me the ick but flavor was definitely there. Will not order again. We were seated immediately upon arriving and waters were brought out. Orders were taken quickly and food came out quick! However after the food came out, no one came to check on us, see how we were doing or clear plates. We were always having to flag someone down for refills, napkins and the check. It wasn't busy. The inside is clean, has a large bar area and outdoor seating. Also lots of TVs. I don't think I'll be returning, but I do recommend the poutine fries and pretzel bites. Things to note: Have to walk up stairs to enter. Our server was really sweet and it was a cute location but the queso tasted great but it was cold! The gyro was like bagged or maybe precooked chicken ? Pita wasn't fried at all or even toasted so it was soggy before long. The fries were EXCELLENT. But overall very mediocre food. No bad but nothing to write home about. read more

It was such a beautiful day.... where can we eat outside? I found "The Spot", its in the old Smee's location on the river. When we showed up, we asked if we could sit at a table outside, the guy was a little overwhelmed, he said "I can sit you in 10 mins". I said "can we have this table". OK, but....just know I'll be with you as soon as I get caught up, I'm totally fine with that I said. . He bought us a couple menus to look over. Then a table on the railing with shade opened up, I didn't care about the table was dirty with dishes, so we decided to move. I love to look at the river and watch the people go by. The server said, I'll be over soon! He was never so happy when Sierra showed up to help him out. He came over to our table I said "I hope you don't mind, I moved to be in the shade, I know I'm one of those pain in the ass customers". Then he started joking with me and it was the perfect ice breaker. My server and part owner's name is Casey! He is an awesome guy and such a hard worker to ensure his customers are taken care of. I love that. We had a couple beers, he has quite the selection of beers on tap, he supports the community breweries such as Lead Dog and Revisions. My husband had the breakfast burrito $13, it was huge with homemade tortilla chips with salad and guacamole. I had the fish and chips. You get three large pieces of fish, fries and yummy coleslaw. I love how they put the tater sauce and ketchups in personal cups for you that shows class. My fish was absolutely delicious better than the old Smees and especially the new location. You get a nice meal for $20. They have indoor, outdoor, bar seating. They have a little merch area and a gaming bar if you feel lucky. Very interesting place. Went here for happy hour, but the website is wrong and there was no happy hour...but they had football specials. Either way this worked out, as we decided to split a smash burger and hubs beer was on the football list of drinks. I got an IPA..it was only 8 dollars normal price. The place inside is small, and it was cold outside, yet people still weathered the outside to see the river. The bartenders were doing a great job with service. Out food was very good and we loved the French fries. It got chaotic at the end, as a bar crawl of some type showed up and overwhelmed the staff...not their fault. Stopped by The Spot for some food and drinks and ended up having a really nice evening! They had a one-man band performing while we were there, which gave the place a great vibe , laid-back but lively at the same time. It definitely made the experience feel a bit more special. The service was a little on the slower side, but the staff was friendly and checked in when they could. We've been here a few times. Location is great. Service staff are very nice. Ordered the Chopped Wedge Salad and special fish sandwich with fries. My wedge salad was a 3.0. Lots of chopped lettuce and raw red onions. Blue cheese was not the best. Had the consistency of feta, but tasted like dry blue cheese. Not a lot of it. Bacon was paper thin. Wedge salad should have thick bacon ( in my opinion). Salad dressing was very thick, but it was good. Ask for extra to cover all that lettuce. Husband had the sandwich and he liked it. We hit up The Spot on our last date night out, and had a great meal & made a really fun memory. We just wanted a casual bite, maybe a cocktail, so we headed to The Spot based on recent Yelp reviews. Parking DT is always a hassle, but by no fault of TS. We were able to get a riverside table, and the hostess kept asking if we were sure since it had suddenly clouded over, but we were committed. We had probably The. BEST. calamari I've had outside of the Monterey Bay area & a bulgogi steak sammie to share. Then came the rain. What started as a cutesy, demure little sprinkle turned downpour and yes, we DID agree to sit outside. We tried to tough our way thru it for a while but eventually sought shelter inside, paid our check and literally had to RUN for our car. Boring date night meals don't really make memories, but this one did! So second visit to the spot. First visit went pretty great and this time was ALMOST right on the money, but specifically the calamari was totally different from our first visit. I'll keep my rating as it stands as maybe this was an off day or there was some issues with deliveries, but the first time the calamari was crispy and tasty, and even had rings and tentacles. This time the calamari was just what appeared to be more like chunks and was pretty disappointing, but to be fair the other food was all still great. Specifically really enjoyed the cheese curds with a nice cold beer. We love spending time in the river District of Reno. We've been to the spot several times and always have fantastic food. Today we got 3 pounds of chicken wings with no rub and no sauce. We asked them just to put salt and pepper on it. They said no problem and they were some of the best wings we've ever had. Delicious!!!! read more

Was super excited to try this place out since it is right on the river. Place has a lot of potential but maybe a couple learning curves. The good: right on the river and close to lots of things downtown with a wide selection of food to choose from. The opportunity for improvement: service was ridiculous slow, it was a weekend night but the place was not busy when we were seated. Waitresses (young girl) definitely wasn't very attentive and the drinks and food took a long time to come out. When the check was brought out we were told due to a large party 20% tip was automatically applied. It made me wonder if our group was not served in a timely fashion because she knew she was getting a 20% tip no matter what. I will try this place one more time in the future to see if there is improvements. Overall lots of potential to be a great place to hang out. read more

I tried this place for lunch when i saw that they offered fish tacos. That was a mistake. This location is where the old Smee's fish house was. It's a great location overlooking the truckee river. Unfortunately the new ownership went with sports bar motif instead something more upscale. Does reno really need yet another sports bar/pub, this one with slot machines? The fish tacos were terrible. They were grilled mahi mahi but clearly they were thawed from frozen and charred dry on a grill. They were super salty and served with chopped romaine and just a hint of some sort of taco sauce. No cabbage, no baja sauce, no pico or mango accents. Just pretty dry and barren fish pieces (not filets). Throw 6 tortilla chips on the plate with a micro cup of salsa and that was it. Ultimately when trying a new dish or place i ask myself at the end ... would i order that again? For these tacos that is a strong no. Places like this just reinforce my rule about bar food. Restaurants generally have flavorful food but weak drinks. Bars generally focus on overpriced drinks and have mediocre food. This food was mediocre at best. Stopped in for a late lunch. The place was well staffed but not busy at all. It's right on the river with a nice view. There is ample outdoor seating but we chose inside as it was rather warm. We were seated immediately but I was surprised that it took a while for the waiter to come by. He took our drink order and left. When he returned a while later with the drinks he took our food order. We both ordered tacos. I had the carne asada and my wife had fish tacos. They were supposed to come with a a side of guacamole and chips. It took at least 10-15 minutes for the tacos to come. After he left we noticed that there was no guacamole. Plus there were only like 7 or so chips on the plate. $20 for 3 small tacos and they're going to scrimp on chips? I kept trying to get the waiter attention but no luck there. By the time I got his attention I was down to one taco left and no chips. When he finally came I inquired about the guacamole and he replied, "oh you didn't get your guacamole?" I don't know who he was expecting to serve it if it wasn't him? Before he he left I asked him for some more chips (btw they weren't that great, rather greasy). He came back with the guacamole which was a very small little cup of watery guacamole and a small bowl of chips. Which he then tells me there's a $3 charge for the extra chips. My wife enjoyed her tacos but I didn't care for the carne asada. The meat was on the tough side and they had an odd flavor and way too spicy. Oh how I wanted to love this place, but it was not a great experience. Let me start by saying I rarely give less than 3 stars. I was so excited to try The Spot because we finally have a more affordable place with river views downtown. I made a reservation for a Thursday night but the patio is first come first serve. We snagged the last patio table and had a wonderful view! They brought a high chair for our baby and things started off great. We ordered some cocktails and beers, took a little longer than expected to have them brought out but no big deal. We ordered an appetizer which came out at an appropriate time. We got the calamari, it was good but a pretty small serving size. Thank goodness we got an appetizer because the experience went downhill from there. We got there at 6:30pm and our food did not come out until 8pm! We finally asked around 7:45 how much longer it would be and they said at least another 10 minutes. The waiter told us they only have one cook in the kitchen, so it's very backed up. This was surprising because the whole patio was full and they had live music, so how could you not be prepared for the dinner crowd with just one cook? We waited an absurd amount of time and ended up spending a full two hours here which was not the plan since we had a baby with us. When the food finally came out, the tacos that came with chips, salsa, and guac according to the menu were laughable. There were literally 5-6 chips on the plate and no salsa or guac. The waiter told us the cook "86'd the guac" meaning it wasn't being served with this dish anymore. We later found out it was because the avocados were still frozen. He did bring out a side of chips and some salsa for me. I got the carne asada tacos, the meat itself was delicious! However, the tacos were pretty sad with not much else on them. There was cilantro but the Caramelized onions that were supposed to come on them were basically invisible, I think I only saw one piece out of all three tacos. Everyone else at the table had great things to say about their food, thankfully. We had guests with us and they were full and satisfied with their meals, when they finally came. I would say all of the blame is on the cook and the horrendous wait times. Our waiter, Riley, was actually great at checking in on us and apologizing for the wait. He helped us try to keep things lighthearted as the wait time progressed, knowing it was out of his control but he still wanted us to have a good experience. If you're going to make your waiters be put in uncomfortable situations like this where they have to be the ones facing the upset customers because of your cook, they deserve a raise. Riley was wonderful and I wish this review rating was able to reflect his service. However, the terrible wait times and the sad dish of food that was brought out for me cannot be more than 2 stars. The excellent river view and affordable prices make me want to come back to give them another try, especially since so many reviews are hit or miss--several 1-2 stars but also many 5 stars. I still don't think I'd risk it if this was my experience on a Thursday, not even a busy weekend. I would come back for drinks on the patio but hope they make some big changes in the kitchen before I try to order food here again. read more

So the wife and I saw this place on the news. We were walking downtown and stopped by for lunch. They were super welcoming and super friendly. They have good beers on tap and other drinks. My brother-in-law was in town and we were looking for a place for happy hour on Saturday. When The Spot came up in a search, I was surprised because I hadn't heard of it before! But the reviews were great so we decided to check it out. Located along the river (where Smee's Alasakan Fish Bar used to be), we found The Spot to be a very welcoming sports bar/restaurant. It was pretty lively when we walked in, with many seats already taken and different sporting events playing on their many TVs. Since there were only few bar seats open, I asked if we could sit at a table for happy hour. Absolutely! So we snagged a table. They have a pretty good happy hour with both drink and food specials. My husband and I were happy to see Revision Disco Ninja Hazy IPA on the menu so we got those while my brother-in-law got the West Coast IPA. For food, we had so much!! We all loved the firecracker shrimp (really good), the guys both enjoyed the hot wings, we shared both the caesar and chopped wedge salads, and I tried the jackfruit mini quesadillas. The food was great as was the friendly service! And we were happy to see all the sports available to watch. They even changed a channel on one of the TVs to a game my husband was interested in. Great find by the River! We were bar hopping downtown when the live music from The Spot drew us in -- shoutout to The Wreckords from Truckee, they were incredible. The Bulgogi steak sandwich was next-level delicious, and I'm already planning a round two. The chef (wish I caught his name!) came out to chat, and you can tell he's passionate about what he's creating. Service was great, and the old fashioned hit the spot. Our server, while she was super nice, spent the majority of her time socializing with her friends (one of which was vaping inside the restaurant the whole time) at the other end of the bar completely ignoring the other side. This had been a common occurrence when we come, friends of the bartender set up shop and end up hanging out there. She came around once in a while, which was ok I guess.
