I'd always wanted to try Cafe Polonia and finally got there on a Thursday early evening. The place is adorably small, so make reservations for sure. The bread service is traditional light rye & butter--just like I remember as a kid. Growing up on north shore, Polish goods were available in Lynn or Chelsea. We tried their borscht with mixed dumplings (mushroom & meat) and the zurek (sour rye soup). I loved both, but the zurek was my favorite and very filling as compared to the tasty borscht. Next up, potato pancakes and kischke (or as my family called it: kaszanka). The pancakes were delicious and the applesauce was special--finely diced apples and peaches! I needed a little more salt on my kischke, but it was delicious, served with dill pickle spears. We both had the Polish Plate, which consisted of a very large golabki (stuffed cabbage), grilled kielbasa, a serving of bigos (Hunter Stew) and three meat pierogi. While my mom's golabki reigns supreme, theirs was very, very good! The bigos was excellent, as was the rest of the platter. I'm a fan of farmer's cheese pierogi but meat filled was nice & filling. I was hoping for some Polish pastry, but none was on the menu and they'd run out of the molten lava cake. Typically I don't care for apple crisp, but theirs was amazing--the buttery topping with rolled oats was fantastic! The restaurant had about 15 different Polish beers and offered some limited wine selections, including one Polish Reisling. There must be a limited liquor license, as no vodka or other brandies are available. I would have loved to have chit-chat all things Poland with the young man working the front end, but he was slammed the entire time--folks coming to eat-in or order take out. Parking along Dorchester Ave was no problem at 5:30pm--filled up later in the night . So many other things to try on the menu--get yourself to Cafe Polonia! read more

What a dream little spot. Small, quaint, comfort polish foods from polish babcia (we saw them in the kitchen looking over their customers. Love.) Pickle Soup $7 A dill pickle soup with carrots, onions, celery and diced potatoes -- amazing little soup with bread. The subtle tastes were deliciously satisfying. Not heavy but not just water. Lovely. Pierogi $18 Served fried with caramelized onions. Choice of: potato and cheese, cabbage and mushroom or spinach (we did a mix of every kind they had! Also comes with great sour cream. Again not heavy--even fried--so much comfort. Perfect dough, perfect fillings. Polish Plate $24 Mix plate: Hunter's stew, stuffed cabbage, three pierogies, and grilled Polish sausage kielbasa. A little taste of everything. Split it with my partner. So much comfort food. Each one was a 10 out of 10. They just never missed the mark. Perfect. Exactly what we wanted. And of course we split the Gypsy Pancake $21 A giant potato pancake filled with Hungarian goulash, topped with sour cream and dill Huge. This one was heavy for the heavyweights. But phenomenal. Best Polish food anywhere near Boston. This quaint little Cafe has an old world vibe with traditional polish decorations and seating. I was served quickly and knew exactly what I wanted. The soups are here are incredible. I ordered the traditional Polish pickle soup as an appetizer and for my main course I ordered the potato pancakes with goulash. Absolutely outstanding. The potato pancakes are crisp with a rich beef goulash on the side with a dab of sour cream and sweet spiced apples. I washed that all down with a traditional Polish beer. While out shopping in the Seaport District with a friend, we decided to stop by Café Polonia for lunch before heading back to the Cape. My friend had been there several times before, but it was my first time trying Polish or Eastern European cuisine--so I was definitely curious. We were greeted by warm, friendly staff and told there'd be a short wait since all the tables were full. The restaurant is small and cozy, with just about 7 or 8 tables, which made it feel intimate and homey. As we were seated, something immediately caught my eye--a framed, autographed poster of Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the wall. Turns out, he had actually featured Café Polonia on the show! That little detail added an extra layer of excitement and definitely raised my expectations. We both ordered the Żywiec Pilsner, which was light and easy to drink--perfect for someone like me who prefers milder beers. First time having Polish food and wow was I happily stuffed and satisfied! We were in the neighborhood and looking for lunch options. Saw cafe Polonia had really good reviews and decided to give it a try. It was Saturday around 12:30 but we managed to grab the last table. It was a small place so make sure not to come during rush hour. Or if large parties maybe call ahead. We got - - potato pancake 5/5. Super crispy outside but soft and creamy inside. I can eat two more of this!! - pierogi (pork) 4/5. We forgot to ask for pan fried so they came out steamed. Still good especially with bacon bits on top but wish it was fried. Will make sure to request specifically next time. - polish plate (5/5). I like to try everything so this is perfect for me. Everything tasted so good and the hunter stew/cabbage dish paired perfectly with the sausage and balanced it all out. Our server was friendly and food came out pretty quick (big portion as well). We started out with a Polish beer that was very light & flavorful. Then the main courses. Two huge potato pancakes over Hungarian goulash. I came here in a group of 3 for lunch on a Saturday. It wasn't super packed at first but the restaurant filled up quickly. We got the smoked salmon potato pancakes ($14), polish plate ($22), and meat filled potato dumplings ($18). The server also gave us lots of bread with butter. The food came at a reasonable time and everything tasted fresh. We all really liked the smoked salmon potato pancakes because the pancakes had a crispy edge on them and were seasoned nicely. The polish plate was a great way to sample various items on their menu-- everything tasted nice and had a homey feel but I wasn't particularly blown away by any of the dishes. The potato dumplings came in a big serving and I really liked how savory the sauce was. The veggies on the side each had their own flavor profiles and added texture to the dish. This spot isn't cheap but the portions are pretty big for what you pay. One dish can definitely be shared or split into multiple meals. read more

We wandered into Cafe Polonia the night we arrived in Boston because it was a short walk from our hotel. It's a small restaurant but they were able to seat us without a reservation (I'd recommend making one if you're planning ahead). I had the potato pancakes, which were perfectly crisp and delicious and came with a yummy homemade applesauce and/or sour cream. My daughter got the potato dumplings with an upgrade to add goulash. The potato dumplings were not what we expected and we were a little unsure about whether we'd order them again. They are very chewy and not as much like gnocchi as we expected. This place has been on my list to try for quite some time and it definitely lived up to my expectations (and then some). This place is the definition of cozy, European home style cooking. We got the potato pancake dish as an appetizer which was absolutely delicious. The cabbage rolls were the tightest and most packed rolls I've ever tried. So... this is a small shop... and I mean sMALL with a lowercase S! But! Do not judge a Café by its size! The flavors here are HUGE!! We were recommended this place by a friend who enjoys "gastro-tourism." So, immediately, we figured we were in for a treat. Oh man, could not have been more understated. Yes, the place is small, but even though there were six in our party, we had a table immediately. There was a six-top right up front that was vacant as soon as we walked in. Score! (Note: this was also on a Sunday evening, so I'm guessing the timing just worked out perfectly). I had the Polish Plate and a Pickle Soup to start. The soup was delightful! There were plenty of veggies in the dish, but nothing was supremely overpowering. Yes, it's got a heavy dill pickle flavor, so if that's not your bag, then move on. But, it also had a super-savory broth flavor (chicken, I'm guessing?), and a lot of other veggies to make it more hearty. The entrée was a thing of beauty... *still drooling* The kielbasa might be the "prima donna" of the group, but don't let that fool you. Each element is a star in its own right. The sausage was indeed delightful, though. Perfectly grilled, bursting with flavor, very juicy and meaty and smoky... Don't sleep on those pierogis though! Or the cabbage roll! Or the stew that sits underneath the sausage! Every element... I could go into great lengths to describe how amazing each one was... But, I don't want this review to go on forever. Just trust me when I say I tried as hard as I could to finish my plate. And I came very close! I didn't want to stop eating. Went here while visiting Boston and it was a great spot to get Polish food. The waiter was super helpful describing the dishes and helping us get our orders set. For the table we got the smoked salmon potato pancakes, the Herring in Oil and the Borsh. Entree wise I got the Polish plate which let me sample a lot of different stuff like the hunters stew, kielbasa, pierogi's and stuffed cabbage. We ordered Borscht (red Beet soup with mushroom filled pasta) delicious! Salmon salad, which was smoked salmon on cucumber on a bed of spinach and spring salad leaves sprinkled with just the right amount of creamy dill dressing- divine! Expectations entering Cafe Polonia were tempered: as one of the only, perhaps the only, Polish restaurants in Boston, Cafe Polonia has a monopoly on the market and the freedoms that this privilege carries. But disappointment was not in store! I visited Cafe Polonia on a weekday for lunch, certainly a quieter choice of time to visit the establishment. Indeed, all other tables were empty for the duration of the meal. A small restaurant with folksy Polish-themed decor and hefty wooden tables, Cafe Polonia certainly tries to evoke sensations of the beautiful land of Poland. The menu boasts the usual delicious fare: kiełbasy, gołąbki, bigos, pierogi, pyzy, kopytki, barszcz, kaszanka, and so on and so forth. It is worth noting that, sadly, many of these items are listed on the menu with an English descriptor, with no True Name in sight. A bit of problem solving is thus required for some menu items (e.g. does "potato dumplings" refer to pyzy or kopytki?). The food is tasty, and the presentation is elegant and stunning even, some may say. I enjoyed the kiełbasa-bigos combination plate (marketed as kielbasa and cabbage stew), and also sampled the kopytki with gulasz (marketed as potato dumplings with Hungarian goulash), which was served with cabbage and delicious beets. The dishes were also served with some simple white bread. (Indeed, the critics of beets are a disgrace to society.) The prices were reasonable, more or less what I would expect for Boston. Absolutely not exorbitant. I would return. read more

The pickle soup, kiszka, and meat dumplings were out of this world. They could not have done a better job. My brother and I were blown away and felt like we were eating a home cooked meal in Poland. Overall, the ambiance was great. I loved how they incorporated Polish decor. Also, try the honey beer. Best Polish beer I have ever had. You will not be disappointed. Not sure where in Poland they eat it like that. And the Hunter's stew is nothing like the authentic one. This one had a base of sauerkraut I'm sure, it's a shortcut used in many places unfortunately. What an amazing (hidden?!) gem. This place is inexpensive, delicious, and friendly. What's not to like? Atmosphere/decor: very low key greasy spoon meets simple speakeasy. It's quaint and cozy though almost spartan in it's appearance, and there is some Polish themed wall art and flags up. It's clean and well kept. Service: very attentive. They have a small place and a small staff but it works well. I love the enthusiasm and helpfulness of the staff here. Food turn around was quick, even on peak dinner weekend nights. Food: Authentic and delicious. If you haven't used those two words together with Polish food, it's because you haven't been to the right places. The pierogi was perfect with nice bite and perfectly cooked (neither under or over done) insides. Get the seasonal ones. The latkes, too, were great, and love the variety. The borsch was surprisingly good. The kielbasa great and hearty. The deserts rich and well paired. I recommend the combo plates--lots of food and try out different things. Drink: Love the options here. Lots from Poland including some porters/stouts and a variety of ales which I appreciated. Watch out for those high alcohol contents tho! Price: Incredibly inexpensive. Like, how do they make a profit? A party of four adults with drinks and deserts ate for the same price as one person might eat at some of the fine dining restaurants around here -- heck some of the not-so-fine-dining but just because things have gotten expensive. The pickle soup was also quite good. I don't recall the last time I have seen this on a menu. The stuffed cabbage was delectably dense with a smooth tomato sauce on top.
