I'd always wanted to try Cafe Polonia and finally got there on a Thursday early evening. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is adorably small, so make reservations for sure.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The bread service is traditional light rye & butter--just like I remember as a kid. Growing up on north shore, Polish goods were available in Lynn or Chelsea. We tried their borscht with mixed dumplings (mushroom & meat) and the zurek (sour rye soup). I loved both, but the zurek was my favorite and very filling as compared to the tasty borscht. Next up, potato pancakes and kischke (or as my family called it: kaszanka). The pancakes were delicious and the applesauce was special--finely diced apples and peaches! I needed a little more salt on my kischke, but it was delicious, served with dill pickle spears. We both had the Polish Plate, which consisted of a very large golabki (stuffed cabbage), grilled kielbasa, a serving of bigos (Hunter Stew) and three meat pierogi. While my mom's golabki reigns supreme, theirs was very, very good! The bigos was excellent, as was the rest of the platter. I'm a fan of farmer's cheese pierogi but meat filled was nice & filling. I was hoping for some Polish pastry, but none was on the menu and they'd run out of the molten lava cake. Typically I don't care for apple crisp, but theirs was amazing--the buttery topping with rolled oats was fantastic! The restaurant had about 15 different Polish beers and offered some limited wine selections, including one Polish Reisling. There must be a limited liquor license, as no vodka or other brandies are available. I would have loved to have chit-chat all things Poland with the young man working the front end, but he was slammed the entire time--folks coming to eat-in or order take out. It was a small place so make sure not to come during rush hour. Or if large parties maybe call ahead. We got - - potato pancake 5/5. Super crispy outside but soft and creamy inside. I can eat two more of this!! - pierogi (pork) 4/5. We forgot to ask for pan fried so they came out steamed. Still good especially with bacon bits on top but wish it was fried. I came here in a group of 3 for lunch on a Saturday. It wasn't super packed at first but the restaurant filled up quickly. We got the smoked salmon potato pancakes ($14), polish plate ($22), and meat filled potato dumplings ($18). The server also gave us lots of bread with butter. The food came at a reasonable time and everything tasted fresh. We all really liked the smoked salmon potato pancakes because the pancakes had a crispy edge on them and were seasoned nicely. The polish plate was a great way to sample various items on their menu-- everything tasted nice and had a homey feel but I wasn't particularly blown away by any of the dishes. The potato dumplings came in a big serving and I really liked how savory the sauce was. The veggies on the side each had their own flavor profiles and added texture to the dish. It's a small restaurant but they were able to seat us without a reservation (I'd recommend making one if you're planning ahead). I had the potato pancakes, which were perfectly crisp and delicious and came with a yummy homemade applesauce and/or sour cream. My daughter got the potato dumplings with an upgrade to add goulash. The potato dumplings were not what we expected and we were a little unsure about whether we'd order them again. They are very chewy and not as much like gnocchi as we expected. There were plenty of veggies in the dish, but nothing was supremely overpowering. Yes, it's got a heavy dill pickle flavor, so if that's not your bag, then move on. But, it also had a super-savory broth flavor (chicken, I'm guessing?), and a lot of other veggies to make it more hearty. The entrée was a thing of beauty... *still drooling* The kielbasa might be the "prima donna" of the group, but don't let that fool you. Each element is a star in its own right. The sausage was indeed delightful, though. Perfectly grilled, bursting with flavor, very juicy and meaty and smoky... Don't sleep on those pierogis though! Or the cabbage roll! Or the stew that sits underneath the sausage! Every element... I could go into great lengths to describe how amazing each one was... But, I don't want this review to go on forever. Went here while visiting Boston and it was a great spot to get Polish food. The waiter was super helpful describing the dishes and helping us get our orders set. For the table we got the smoked salmon potato pancakes, the Herring in Oil and the Borsh. Entree wise I got the Polish plate which let me sample a lot of different stuff like the hunters stew, kielbasa, pierogi's and stuffed cabbage. To begin, service was efficient, personable, and our servers spoke both excellent Polish & English. The food! Absolutely divine. It tasted exactly like Babcia's cooking back home! The pickle soup, kiszka, and meat dumplings were out of this world. They could not have done a better job. My brother and I were blown away and felt like we were eating a home cooked meal in Poland. Expectations entering Cafe Polonia were tempered: as one of the only, perhaps the only, Polish restaurants in Boston, Cafe Polonia has a monopoly on the market and the freedoms that this privilege carries. But disappointment was not in store! I visited Cafe Polonia on a weekday for lunch, certainly a quieter choice of time to visit the establishment. Indeed, all other tables were empty for the duration of the meal. A small restaurant with folksy Polish-themed decor and hefty wooden tables, Cafe Polonia certainly tries to evoke sensations of the beautiful land of Poland. The menu boasts the usual delicious fare: kiełbasy, gołąbki, bigos, pierogi, pyzy, kopytki, barszcz, kaszanka, and so on and so forth. It is worth noting that, sadly, many of these items are listed on the menu with an English descriptor, with no True Name in sight. A bit of problem solving is thus required for some menu items (e.g. does "potato dumplings" refer to pyzy or kopytki?). The food is tasty, and the presentation is elegant and stunning even, some may say. I enjoyed the kiełbasa-bigos combination plate (marketed as kielbasa and cabbage stew), and also sampled the kopytki with gulasz (marketed as potato dumplings with Hungarian goulash), which was served with cabbage and delicious beets. The dishes were also served with some simple white bread. (Indeed, the critics of beets are a disgrace to society.) The prices were reasonable, more or less what I would expect for Boston. What an amazing (hidden?!) gem. This place is inexpensive, delicious, and friendly. What's not to like? Atmosphere/decor: very low key greasy spoon meets simple speakeasy. It's quaint and cozy though almost spartan in it's appearance, and there is some Polish themed wall art and flags up. It's clean and well kept. Service: very attentive. They have a small place and a small staff but it works well. I love the enthusiasm and helpfulness of the staff here. Food turn around was quick, even on peak dinner weekend nights. Food: Authentic and delicious. If you haven't used those two words together with Polish food, it's because you haven't been to the right places. The pierogi was perfect with nice bite and perfectly cooked (neither under or over done) insides. Get the seasonal ones. The latkes, too, were great, and love the variety. The borsch was surprisingly good. The kielbasa great and hearty. The deserts rich and well paired. I recommend the combo plates--lots of food and try out different things. Drink: Love the options here. Lots from Poland including some porters/stouts and a variety of ales which I appreciated. Watch out for those high alcohol contents tho! Price: Incredibly inexpensive. Like, how do they make a profit? A party of four adults with drinks and deserts ate for the same price as one person might eat at some of the fine dining restaurants around here -- heck some of the not-so-fine-dining but just because things have gotten expensive.
