Our experience here was very unwelcoming and unfriendly. We honestly felt like we were treated differently because of our physical appearance. Our server was terrible, the service was slow, and the environment wasn't friendly. We had raised concerns about the service we received and we were still given half-ass service. The food was free, for me to take time to write a bad review on free food tells you how bad it was. I am not a food snob either. Based on the 100s of 5 star reviews I can only assume that the food was not typical. The coffee had a wierd chemical taste and seemed possibly leftover from the day before, I let it sit thinking it needed to be stirred, stirring made it worse and it had to go down the drain. There were three, the next worse than the last. The food, the portions were amazing and the food smelled great, but 90% went to the raccoons. I have never met a pancake that could not be fixed with real butter and decent syrup, but there was no fixing these with any amount of anything, they had a bizarre texture and were 100% flavorless. My best guess is that they were frozen, especially since they were all nearly the exact same size. One of the 4 were eaten. Just like the pancakes the omelet smelled and looked amazing, but it was so salty that it was absolutely inedible unless sandwiched between the toast and the flavorless hashbrowns. It was really a shame because the omelet was massive and had a good amount of meat and cheese. There was also a huge portion of hashbrowns that were clearly from frozen. Listen, I wanted to gatekeep this place. It is so good. This is a treasure, a gem, some of the best and cheapest breakfast food you can get. I love Cafe Java, I come here... more than I would like to admit. The staff is overwhelmingly friendly and it is always busy but we always get our food in a timely manner. One thing, there is a greater credit card charge that is passed onto the customer, so bring cash if you want to save some money. I really enjoy this place. Their coffee is great and their special, the hill country breakfast, is phenomenal. I usually get some variation of omelets from here and I love it every time. The staff is wonderful, and they really brighten your day. I also think that any menu item you get (breakfast food wise because I can attest to that) is delicious. I am such a fan. The ambience is eclectic and fun, but the lighting is a little too strange for some reason. I could probably write a PhD dissertation on why places like this are a national treasure, but I'll try to keep things relatively brief and save my Nobel prize for later. Java is a real, authentic breakfast diner by practically every available metric known to man: the kitschy decor of random paintings scattered throughout, the really good quality drip coffee served in traditional mugs, the absolutely insane portions of great quality food they serve, the crispy top to all the hashbrowns, and just overall friendly and quick service as well. I almost always get their ultimate migas plate and it's never disappointed as the photo will show. I somehow always manage to finish the plate off just because it's that damn good. Let me start by saying that I don't give out 5 star reviews too often. This diner is in a strip mall next to a gas station, so from the outside you really wouldn't expect much. But I've been several times now and it's one of my favorite breakfast spots in Austin. The staff is friendly and there's parking, which is always a plus for breakfast/brunch. They have rotating specialty coffee drinks and all the ones that I've tried so far have been good. I've tried a few different breakfast meals here but today I got a breakfast taco on a flour tortilla with refried beans, cheese, potato, and sausage. The potato is actually just their hash-browns, but I like that much more than the home fries some places use. The salsa is pretty good too. I know Austin is known for breakfast tacos and I wouldn't say these are the best breakfast tacos I've ever had but they do the job and satisfy that craving. The other thing to add, and probably the most important in my opinion, is the grilled muffins. Yes, grilled muffins. It may not sound like much but don't knock it until you try it. I think over the course of several visits I've tried every flavor they have. The blueberry muffin, then the cinnamon (when they have it), are my favorites. It's important that the muffin be cut into thirds, as halves doesn't quite have the same impact. These grilled muffins are insanely good and definitely the main reason I keep coming back. I've brought several friends here and the muffins have always been the best part. I wish they had a south Austin location, but that may be for the best or I'd be there too often. read more

Our host who took order was not so friendly, but the lady(bit elderly) who bought our food was friendly, welcoming and helpful. I got Migas & cappuccino, husband the Java and kiddo single pancake. Both Migas and the Java comes with bacon, we don't eat bacon so husband got avocado instead of it and I got hash brown. Migas: hash browns is the one I loved the most, it was light, crispy, hot( temperature), beans was ok, scrambled egg was good but it dint had any seasoning other than salt, it came with ranchero sauce, which was absolutely bland and doesn't have any taste or seasoning to it. Cappuccino: it was very good, but there to go cups are styrofoam and looked very cheap quality, personally I don't like hot stuff in styrofoam containers. The Java : husband liked his the Java and loved the coffee. Pancake: I don't do pancake at home, so our kiddo usually likes and finishes his Pancake @ the restaurants but after couple of bites, he dint want to eat it, he dint liked it, we were surprised, I dint taste it so can't comment. What a homey place to eat :) Stopped in for breakfast and was seated immediately. Packed restaurant from the tables to people coming in to pick up orders to-go. The service was very friendly and the food came out quickly. You get a generous portion for whatever you order. Don't forget to look at the daily specials on the board for $9.99! I really enjoyed my Ultimate Migas. They had all the ingredients I like including chorizo. I believe I get the same things here in Arlington but they are still called Migas. Sometimes all you have to do is ask for modifications to get what you want. Most businesses are agreeable to changes. The service was very friendly!! They were very busy and that's a good good sign. This is a type of place where you can go every morning and you'll find almost the same people. This seemed like a local favorite among my parents' age group. The staff was pretty helpful in suggesting the dishes. We got a garden burger with side of cottage cheese and peaches, a California omelette with side of hashbrowns, and a cafe mocha. The service is fast and the food is tasty and affordable. I really liked the burger and the omelette. I was a bit unhappy with the cottage cheese and peaches, the peaches seemed straight out of can whereas I had an expectation of fresh ones. It was a looooooong wait. They said it was going be 45 minutes, it ended up being over an hour. But when we got in there they were sooo friendly as a staff and efficient. This place had amazing service. The host was super friendly and us comfortable with the wait. When we sat down and ordered the food came out within 10 minutes! Hot and fresh!!! The whole table was pleasantly stunned. Everything was good. The coffee was on point without any cream. I should've bought some beans to go. The wait staff worked as a team keeping the energy up and they kept the tables from looking junky. Overall we had a great time. I saved Cafe Java in my bookmarks after seeing hash browns and cheap menu prices, both of which are surprisingly hard to find in the Austin brunch scene. Came back for another visit! Again this place doesn't disappoint. Great neighborhood cafe and support local businesses! I love their rotating specials written on the chalkboard. All of the food we've tried has been great. You get large portions for a good price. Also, everyone working there is warm, friendly, and personable. Our last meal before departing Austin was a great one. We stumbled upon Cafe Java as a highly-rated eatery tucked into the north part of the Domain. Since I've yet to have a proper Tex-Mex dish, I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, and my partner got the Migas. The Huevos Rancheros were so freaking delicious! I literally left no crumbs on my plate. The Migas was also amazing too! They are similar dishes, except the Migas comes with scrambled eggs and sauce on the side. The service was excellent. Our food arrived quickly and we were checked on by 2 waitresses consistently. When I went to go pay at the counter, I saw the wall of coffee beans that they had from all around the world. They also had a shelf of different syrups available for purchase. The icing on the cake was the Andes mints they had in a jar at the register for the taking. I hasn't had those since I was a kid, so it was definitely a rare find! TLDR: this was an excellent choice and I'll definitely be back if I return to Austin. read more

Can we please get some music that is free of commercials? An XM radio subscription could be streamed via smartphone to a cheap bluetooth equipped amp to drive the existing speakers. I got mine with potato, bacon, egg & cheese and it was chefs kiss! The other combos we did was avocado/egg/potatoes, avocado/chorizo/egg, chorizo/refried beans. Everyone hypes up the breakfast tacos and I can see why. We also had the French toast and a pancake. I would say the French toast was good and better than the pancakes, as the pancake was a bit dry. Normally I get black coffee but I tried the cappuccino instead. It was on the milkier side in terms of flavor and the froth was extremely foamy. It's a really great brunch spot with cheap prices, large portions, rotating specials, and lots of options! We came to Cafe Java for breakfast around 1pm. When you walk in, you're able to take an open seat wherever you can find a clean table. The restaurant gives off cozy diner vibes, in it's own "Keep Austin Weird" kind of way. We sat down immediately and were warmly greeted by our waitress. We asked our waitress for recommendations which did not disappoint! We ordered the Java Melt per recommendation which is a breakfast bagel and hash brown. For my bagel, I got an everything bagel, egg white, bacon for protein, and pepper Jack cheese. The bagel and the ingredients tasted fresh and well-made. The hash brown was golden, crisp, and not soggy - I paired mine with a delicious hot sauce they have on the table. Overall 8/10 food experience. I'd definitely order this again. Our waitress hyped up the bacon so much, she even gave us 2 slices for free to test out before ordering our meal. The service here gives this restaurant it's 5 stars! We used to go here for brunch pre-pandemic when we managed to get up early enough (by 9:30 or 10 the wait was really long, like 30 minutes to an hour). Since we've started getting up at 5AM so we can row early to beat the heat and traffic we wake up earlier even on weekends, so we managed to get here before 9 and only had a 5 minute wait! The food is here is tasty and plentiful. My favorite was the California omelet, which is surprising since there's no meat, just cheese and veggies, and I'm usually a meat eater. Today they had a new special which we got in addition to the California. The sincronizadas with corn tortillas, eggs, avocado, tomato, and pulled pork was really tasty, and the serving size was gigantic, even compared to the usual generous serving sizes here. Everything else was just as tasty as I remember as well, and the service was as fast as it used to be. There were just two negatives to brunch here today. On a minor down note, the sausage/egg/cheese breakfast taco I got had pretty meager innards... only half as much as I remember. Hopefully this was just a minor glitch and not the result of cost-cutting or something. The other negative thing was a lot worse. It used to be that the clientele was relatively old and fat, so I always felt young and athletic when we went here by comparison. Today the customers all seemed to be younger and skinnier than they used to be, so I felt older and fatter... I guess it could be I'm older and fatter... nah, that can't be it, they must have gotten a younger, hipper customer base. read more
