I find that the best time to go on a weekend is right before Noon. Two of the group got the 2x2x2 special that today had Salted Caramel Butterscotch Pancakes. Bf devoured them. I had a single breakfast taco that starts with egg, cheese, and one topping. I had chorizo and then added bacon and avocado. It was delicious and a perfect portion for me for breakfast. The place was packed just after 11 am on the Sunday we visited. It's got kitschy art everywhere, the place looks a bit old inside, and it always looks like the line is going to take two hours. Don't believe the lies! This place makes good, basic, epic brunch items, and you never wait more than a half hour. Do you have kids? This is your spot. Don't have kids but find baby watching endlessly entertaining? This is your place. Friendly, family owned staff? Also your place. I only have a few bones because they would make Cafe Java perfection. 1) Canned fruit in their fruit bowls. Why not just switch to seasonal?? Would it kill ya? Canned peaches and pineapple... Ugh. 2) Greasy bacon. It's just kind of slimy. But the sausage is incredible. 3) Sometimes hit or miss with the service. Last time our waiter was more concerned with flirting with the table next to ours than bringing us the things we asked him for three or four times. Visiting from Houston and wanted a good breakfast. It was packed. We were in a little hurry so we ordered our food to go. The customer service was awesome. It seems family owned and they treat you like family. I had the country omelet. The hashbrowns are amazzziinngg! My friend had the special which was biscuits and gravy. She loved them as well. The drinks are good as well. I had a chai latte (a little on the milky side but we aren't in Europe). My friend had the cafe con panna which was basically a vanilla latte with caramel. We discovered this gem on yelp and were pleased that it was so close to our house. Don't let the throngs of people waiting outside deter you, the line goes fast and its definitely worth the wait. The service here is fast and the servers are very attentive, knowledgeable, and just overall fantastic. Our drinks are never more than half empty and the food comes out in, what seems like, 10 minutes or less after you put in your order. We were a big group here yesterday morning with six adults, two kids, and two babies. The place was packed and had a crazy wait, so we're glad that our friends were there early to secure a table. The waitress handled our group well and was extremely on point and patient. We got iced coffees and they were pretty watery. For breakfast, one of us got the migas and the other got the eggs benedict. The latter was disappointing: the hollandaise tasted sour and the "extras" of tomato and spinach were pretty paltry. Hash browns were blasé. The migas was better with good seasoning and nice portion-size. Even though we're giving Cafe Java three stars, we did like this place (one of our pals was telling us how it's known as a hidden gem). What's not to love about Café Java? Their breakfast is amazing. The pancakes are to die for. The hash-browns are always cooked to a perfect crisp, and my coffee is always hot and refilled. Let's not even discuss how amazing the mouth watering omelets are okay? The only downside to this place is that the building is too small to handle the demand on the weekends and there is always a wait for a table. Since they no longer let you call ahead to put your name on the list expect a 20-30 minute wait on the weekend mornings. Café Java is a family owned restaurant that prides itself on taking good care of its customers and the loyalty shows both ways. I have been coming here for years and couldn't be happier to be living close enough again to once again enjoy one of my favorite Austin coffee shops. PROS: Pancakes, Eggs, Toast, Sausage, Coffee and did I mention Pancakes? They have whole coffee beans and bottles of flavor syrup for sale. Many of my teachers and classmates have recommended Cafe Java, and I can see why! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, too! I went in around lunchtime by myself to grab some coffee and a bite to eat, and although the place was super busy I got seated quickly! I didn't wait long for my food either. This place has a mom and pop vibe. Came here for breakfast during the weekend and it was about a 30 minute wait. The menu is simple and traditional, just straight up good food, nothing crazy. We ordered the Ultimate Migas and California Omelette. They were both really good, but I thought the omelette was better. It's filled with avocado, tomatoes, alfalfa sprouts and I added sausage for $1 more. You can choose to get it with two or three eggs and get it with all egg whites, they have a bunch of sub options if you're trying to be healthy. The hash browns are my favorite, crispy and delicious! I have never felt compelled to write a review but I had to share how wonderful this place was! I am a vegetarian and ordered the ultimate migas and substituted chorizo for soyrizo with no tomatoes (yes-- I'm a vegetarian who hates tomatoes... we are a rare breed) and my partner ordered the Java . It was awesome that they had vegetarian options/substitutes and the soyrizo had so much flavor! In the words of my partner "this bacon was effing amazing" and they cooked the eggs just right! So amazingly good. My friends and I went on a road trip from Houston to Austin and found this gem of a place. Small place with an old timey diner feel. Food's delicious and quantities are large. We all got the ultimate migas and it did not disappoint. I substituted the beans for a pancake which was delicious as well. The server was on top of things and very responsive. The wait time was 25-30 minutes on a Sunday morning but that's to be expected. We got coffees while waiting which held us over. The frozen javaccino with caramel tasted like a caramel frap. Highly recommend this place. Prices are reasonable at about 9.50 for the ultimate migas plate. If you're in Austin, definitely stop by. You won't regret it.
