They were ready for us on arrival with our 6pm reservation on a Sunday. I am a fan of Japanese pasta, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese eggplant and mushroom pasta. The sauce though slightly creamy was also light. I always enjoy watching the bonito flakes crinkle with the steam. Hamburg steak must be popular, since it was listed twice under the entrees. Cafe Hiro is a hidden gem! Getting there took a bit of a drive from Fullerton... but it was well worth the wait. The prices are not the lowest, but the food is delightful. I had Carbonara pasta. I love bacon, and to my surprise, it had bits of bacon all over it. It's really creamy~ I love it! My mom got Uni pasta, and it has a perfect balance of savory and creaminess. My dad got the chicken cutlet curry. The chicken cutlet was just like regular tonkatsu, but with the curry sauce it was good! For dessert we had the walnut creme brulee. It came with 3 apps, 1 salad, 2 pastas, one entree, one risotto, and one dessert per person. It was such a great deal and the perfect amount of food to share. The portions were generous and the speed at which the food was arriving on our table was good. For the apps, we got the smoked salmon burrata, scallop carpaccio, and beef tataki bites. The beef was cooked well and I enjoyed eating it with the soy dip and the grated radish. The scallop carpacio was fresh and the daikon rounds on top have it a refreshing crunch. Smoked salmon burrata was also good as well. For the salad, we got the mushroom salad and it had great umami flavor. The truffle dressing was so good that I wish I had bread to dip in. For our pastas we picked carbonara and uni. The uni pasta came with wasabi on top and it helps to cut the creaminess down. Carbonara was also solid. For entrees and risotto, which was chefs choice, it was the NY strip and scallop risotto. Risotto was cooked perfect and the NY was a good medium rare. One of the best restaurants in the entire Orange County area. Been here 10+ times and never found anything negative about it. The restaurant is rather small/cozy which provides an intimate enviroment for couple dates or small family gathering. Heard about this Japanese cafe from a friend and told me good things about their food, so I had to check it out. When we came in that morning, I was quite surprise when I looked up thinking if it was really the blue sky above us. Theres not that much good Japanese food in my area, but this place was pretty good. We ordered their famous wasabi uni pasta, the seafood linguine, and the samurai tuna tar-tar. Everything was a 4/5. Initially I enjoyed eating the uni pasta, but the flavor got too overwhelming and powering that I got sick of the flavor. It's not bad, it's just not part of my palate. The main entree is Chef's choice : we got the porterhouse steak (upgraded to 12 ounce) medium rare , came with a side of creamy baked potatoes and a very flavorful cold pasta ( maybe Marsala sauce?). One risotto included , tonight it was seared scallop with mushroom risotto. The dinner was capped by one each dessert - croissant bread pudding topped by chocolate and surrounded by a delicious caramel sauce - walnut crème brûlée- very tasty without being overly sweet - Panna cotta with fresh berries and berry sauce drizzle There is no kids' menu but we got a chicken curry dish for our little one - we asked for extra mild , which she seemed to enjoy. Ahi tuna appetizer - the crispy delicate wontons were delicious but not strong enough to scoop the tuna. Tuna mix with avocado and seasonings was great. Calamari - huge rings of calamari in a tempura batter. The rings were the size of onion rings! They were so good! Peking pork buns appetizer - comes with 4 steamed bao buns that you can build your own with the pork pieces and shaved green onions and sauce. The steamed buns are so hot and fresh. The flavor combo is excellent! The Chinese chicken salad was huge. Chicken drenched in sauce and lots is different things added to the salad. I recommend making a reservation ahead of time, especially if you have a big group. I ordered the Uni Pasta and was able to sample the Beef Tataki, Seafood & Uni Risotto, Mentaiko Pasta, and Carbonara Pasta from my friends. I enjoyed everything, my favorite would have to be my Uni Pasta dish. There was a time I didn't like uni, but that phase is long gone, I love uni now! It's is definitely an acquired taste though. I've had a number of their specialties, my favorite being their salmon risotto. Their Kabuto pork cutlet is good, but a bit tougher than I'd thought. If they double fried (first fry being at a low slow temp) I think it'd be o good. Servers are what made the experience better. Gentlemen (I forgot his name) but was extremely attentive. The service from Stanley and the rest of the staff was on point. The reason for 2 stars is mainly the service. The elder waitress (5 stars) was very attentive, accommodating and friendly while the younger waitress was TOTALLY OPPOSITE. No smiles, no greeting, rushing to clean the table as if there's a waitlist going on. She would murmur to the elder waitress and glance at us as we weren't invited. It's such a good value for what you're getting. You basically get to taste the entire menu. They also portion the each dish according to your party size which is a minor detail that I much appreciated. From what I can recall, you are able to choose some of the specials as your choice too. Like what? Cafe Hiro seamlessly blends Japanese flavors into Italian vessels. It's different and oh so good. While I loved everything we ordered, some favorites include: -scallop carpaccio: with daikon, yuzu sauce, and curry oil -Peking pork: 4 pieces of steamed buns, Asian herb mix, hoisin sauce -uni pasta: wasabi, nori But my very, very favorite was probably the New York steak. So basic, I know, but the entree comes with buttery scalloped potatoes, some pasta and a garlic ponzu dipping sauce. The food is delicious and was the perfect place for lunch. The menu included lots of Italian and Japanese foods and the fusion between the two cuisines was immaculate. We found that although the risotto was cheesy, had a nice texture, and parmesany taste, it was too bland :( I think a touch of salt would've helped. THE SCALLOPS THO, they were soft, juicy, sweet, and seared to perfection I would get tired of the risotto if i had to eat a whole plate by myself, I'm glad I did the omakase so i could try it and have a couple bites. The only redeeming factor was the scallops, other than that I'd skip out on the risotto and get a pasta - panna cotta 5/5 Tasted milky and creamy. The strawberry sauce was not artificial tasting, it added a nice hint of acidity, but not a strong strawberry taste at all. The panna cotta was jiggly, and smooth in texture, and the fruit added a nice crisp texture to contrast - walnut creme brulee 5/5 Oh my god this was so good, it was creamy, nutty, had a nice sugar crust, and there were bits of walnut evenly distributed in there.
