I loved the location, the ambiance, and the live music that accompanied our dinner.. but this place left much to be desired. It happened to still be happy hour when we came here, which we didn't expect but thought, okay great, let's give it a go. The happy hour food menu is smaller portions than the regular menu but not actually a better price, you're just able to try more (ie the regular app may come with 2 pieces, so you pay half the regular menu price but only get 1 piece). So we decided we'd try the drinks rather than getting a bottle of wine, but we'd stick with the regular food menu. Their martinis were okay, but they messed up my husbands Manhattan, so then we tried their wines by the glass, lackluster as well. To start we had the Tostones Catula; these are a nice size, and the flavor pairing is interesting. Next we had the beef carpaccio, which we did not particularly care for. For our main courses we had the Fettucini Carbonara (skip this.. it's one of our favorite dishes and this one lacked flavor), and the Mezzaluna Di Granchio. The Mezzaluna was recommended by our waiter, and this dish was very good, with a really nice sauce; definitely the best thing we had here. While I really like the ambiance here, I wish they had better food and drinks. read more

We were traveling from Miami to Key Largo and I randomly found this restaurant when searching for something near the toll road. Very nice lunch special, three course pasta choices for around 20 dollars and seafood three course selections around 28 dollars. Attentive service. The lentil soup was delicious. I had the shrimp risotto and it was very well made and seasoned. The dessert choices ( tres leches or Nutella crepes with ice cream) were also great. Very nice ambiance for a group or a couple. Cafe Catula is at Sunset Corners, the intersection of SW 87 Avenue and Sw 72 Street. We went for Happy Hour and sat at the bar. They have a fairly extensive raw and cooked HH menu, chosen from their regular Pica Pica menu. Many options are grouped together by price: $6.00, $7.00 and $9.00. Montaditos are $8-$10 and they also have two dishes $25/$28 that include Iberico Ham. Cocktails and glasses of wine and beer are discounted by 25%. We tried a number of dishes: raw oysters (3 @ $6, usually 6 @ $18), which were fresh; Oysters Rockefeller (4 @ $9, usually 6 @ $18) contain cheese, herbs and a small amount of spinach. They were plump and nicely seasoned; Honga Rellenos (3 2 $6, usually $10), white cap mushrooms with melted Feta and peppers which were moist and slightly piquant. We were in the mood for a few slices of cheese and got the Cabra al Vino/Drunken Goat (3 @ $7, usually $9). We also sampled the Lemon Drop, Cosmopolitan and Lychee Martini, all @ $13. Kudos to the bartender on the excellent drinks. The restaurant has multiple menus, some with a more international feel than the HH menu, are open for lunch and dinner and can accommodate private parties. We enjoyed the experience and might come back to sample the dinner menu, which is, of course, why restaurants offer happy hours. read more

We started with nice warm rolls with garlic butter and a tomato parmesano rue spread. Next the the soup of the day was pumpkin. Wonderful broths like full of flavor. For the entrée I had the stuff cannelloni with spinach and ricotta cheese in a pink sauce. Beautiful blend of flavors not to cheesy or to saucy or to spinachy. The veal scaloppini in Marsala was marvelous. Two tender veal steaks slightly covered in a sweet fruity tangy wine sauce with mushrooms and onion that left the palette wanting more. The Branzano was very fresh in a light flavorful garlic sauce. Onto the dessert choices of Nutella or dulce leche crepes which of the two more delicious I'll leave that up you. Went here last Sunday with the family. We were seated promptly and parking was not an issue. First problem. We were seated under a dripping a/c vent which we noticed after being seated. We ordered from the miami spice menu which had plenty of choices. Appetizers were good . I ordered the duck breast and received a plate with the duck sliced which was a little misleading. Everybody enjoyed there meals but for the money we expected a little more. Also the wines were very expensive. I do expect a 200% increase but not $45 for a $12 bottle of wine. Just not worth the $45 miami spice menu. Service was also another issue. Plates were put on the wrong person every time. Waiters were chatting behind us while the food was ready to be served. Our bill was over $500 for 5. Many more choices in that price range.Need to be more professional for an "upscale" restaurant. read more

Sooo disappointed. I read the reviews and looked at the lunch special menu on line and was excited to try Cafe Catula. First off because it was the holiday season (Dec 27) they raised the price from $15.95 to $28.95. That was ridiculous to begin with. I ordered the cannelloni with spinach and ricotta which was very tasty. I did not expect to get half way through my first cannelloni and pull a long hair out of my mouth. I literally gagged when I saw it. We called the manager over and he had the nerve to say "well noone here has that type of hair. I' ll bring you another order." I told him not to bother. When we received the bill I was not charged for the entree but for the salad and dessert that accompanied the entree ( it was a 3course meal). At least he didn't charge me extra for the hair! I've driven by this place a thousand times and never realized what was tucked away inside because it looked like an average building complex, but boy am I glad I came here for dinner tonight! Tucked away inside was this really nice restaurant with an awesome vibe and atmosphere to it. It's not a huge place, but can still accommodate some bigger groups of 6 or so. The waitress we got was quite a bit on the sassy side but everyone else seemed really good. Maybe she was having a bad night, and at some points even seemed to be actively avoiding our gaze as we tried to get her attention, but like I said, everyone else we spoke to was nice. The food more than made up for it tho as everything our table ordered was top notch. Our appetizers were great, and the main dishes even better. The skirt steak I ordered was so nice and tender and cooked perfectly medium. We all shared and sampled each other's dishes and everything from the pasta to the chicken and even the seafood was excellent. The prices are higher than your everyday chain restaurant but well worth it I believe due to the quality of food you're getting. The desserts were great as well and a perfect end to the meal. It was my girlfriend's birthday and the staff came around to sing happy birthday and gave her a really yummy small piece of flan with a candle which was a cute little touch. Been here a few times the food is always on point. The service however is very very disappointing. Took 55 mins to get our food the last time!!! Only one waiter, who was also the bartender! and one busboy for the entire restaurant. Could even get a second drink because we could t get the waiter to come back!!!! Came here for a farewell celebration and it was incredible! The ambiance is nice, low lighting, piano player...would be a great date night. The staff was friendly, happy to make recommendations and very attentive. The food was amazing! There was about 10 of us and we all loved our meals. At the recommendation of our server I got the salmon aragosta which was amazing, and my husband got churrasco which was just as awesome. Some plates were very unique like the risotto de masitas, but somehow they make it work and the flavors are incredible. Creme brûlée for desert was awesome. Listen, the food is good and so is the service but I don't know what it is about the atmosphere and vibe that doesn't allow me to embrace this place and have no interest to go back. And while the consideration to keep the bugs away is appreciated, I'll quote my sis-in-law and say "I don't want a side of citronella with my meal". The area is surrounded with citronella torches and you will not fail to notice. I'll move on to the positive (kinda). We ordered tapas style. The croquetas de bacalao were delish. Provoleta al Prosciutto was baked provolone over eggplant topped with prosciutto and was great. Tostones a la Catula were the least exciting. It appeared it would be the most flavorful dish including green plantains, risotto saffron and seared tuna but it lacked it big time and the tostones were under cooked. Risotto Di Masitas is pork "masitas" over a black bean and sweet plantain risotto. This has the consistency of arroz con pollo with the flavors of white rice, black beans, platanitos and pork. Again, it was good but not sure why the twist with the risotto when it was still such a familiar taste. The Fritto Misto was great as was the pulpo and the chorizos argentinos. We looked at the menu and what a tough decision it was. We kept on choosing one thing and then finding another and then the Miami Spice menu just made it easier. We would all choose something different and try eachothers,lol. My stepfather opted to order from the regular menu but still ordered the beef carpaccio(one of the appetizer choices for the Miami Spice menu) my mother had the crab cakes, and I ordered the portobello alla mama (spinach and provolone cheese stuffed portobello with drizzled sun dried tomato balsamic vinegar)it was beyond good,my moms crabcakes where generously filled crabcakes and so tasty but hands down the BEST was my stepdads beef carpaccio. Aww just thinking of it makes me drool. It was so delicately sliced with fresh parmesan cheese...I could eat this dish everyday for the rest of my life and never get tired of it. Our main entrées were ridiculous as well. My stepdad had the salmon in lobster sauce (on regular menu only)I could've eaten the sauce by itself with a spoon and the fish was so delicate. I ordered the Corvina Aragosta in a creamy lovster sauce with caviar. ....need I say more. I have a theory for places like Cafe Catula, they show up in residential neighborhoods, away from the glitz of Miami Beach, the crime of the City of Miami, and the Glam of the Gables. Cafe Catula is a great first date place, your lovely first date will be taken so off guard, not because your not laying down $30.00 to park you car in SoBe, or having to pack a piece if you had to drive into the City of Miami, She'll gush at the fact that you won't be paying beach prices, Her breasts will heave by not being seen at Nobu, Prime 112, or The Vix, well maybe not, maybe your first date is the shallow Waffle Head, that needs to be seen, cause you know Justin Beeber, is secretly waiting for her. Screw it, dump that cherish knuckle head, you don't want her anyway, you want someone who will appreciate this place. So, yes the ambiance is that good. And, yes your old stinky bride that you've been married to for years will even like it, it's that interesting. Our service was second to none, they were very proud to serve the food they served, and that's important. I was very impressed with this place. The food, well I was impressed with it also, my lovely date had the black cod it was excellent and I had the Fruita De Mer Risotto, it was perfect. couldn't have been happier. Any good looking spot in the Kendall area is worth trying out since there aren't too many to choose from. Situated along 87th avenue and Sunset Drive this art gallery combined with a restaurant definitely caught out attention. Reservations at 8pm on a Saturday night was a must. The restaurant caters to an older demographic with a live piano man playing tunes while almost every table was full of patrons enjoying their food and having conversation. The celing is high which can carry a noisier level than other places, so we opted for sitting outside. Weather is almost always great in February to do so. The outside area has a nice intimate decor making you feel like you're somewhere in the Gables, however through no fault of the restaurant you will hear emergency veichles sirens and horns from motorists that can will remind you where you are :) Now, let's get to the experience, shall we? This place is a hit as far as food and ambiance. But a huge miss on service and I will explain why: We sat in a table for two, which was a bit uneven so we requested to move. No other tables for 2 available so table for 4 it is. Waiter sat us down but did not remove the other chinaware / glassware from the table. OK, perhaps a slight miss. It can happen to anyone. We ordered a bottle of Montepulciano d Abruzzo #308 off the menu. Had it before, it was perfect! The bread came along with a light meat sauce for dipping. YUM! However, when the bread came we had to push aside the extra place settings ourselves to make room. Can you believe the waiter just took off and left the place settings behind? Appetizer: Pulpo a la Catula (Grilled Octopus) - Fantastic. Grade: A Entree 1: Risotto Di Masitas: Risotto with chunks of pork and scattered black beans. Weird combination! It was OK, but found the Risotto a bit too soggy. As if the chefs did not take the time to thoroughly prepare. Grade: C Entree 2: Brazino Fish, served with Veggies. This was good, I've had this fish at Season's 52 before. It had great flavor, but again - the attention wasn't there. We found a bit more scales on the fish than expected. This type of fish needs to be cleaned thoroughly. Grade: B- Dessert: Crepes de Dulce Leche: Existing in many places now, but this was a hit. Very well prepared and very tasty. A+ Service: In addition to pointing out the table settlng, we were hardly checked on, our wine was poured the first time and never again. We were not asked if we wanted an additional bottle of wine (missing on revenue!!). There was no "how's the food", etc. Grade: F Recap: The place is very nice almost not belonging in Kendall. However, in my experience the staff needs to brush up on their serving skills. The kitchen also needs to have a bit more TLC with their food. The service and kitchen detail really put a huge dent on an otherwise fantastic place and good tasting food. I can't say I'll visit this place again or not. I'm very much on the fence. For now, 2 stars, and I hope I get to visit again to rewrite and have a better experience. read more
