Pumpkin praline cake with cream cheese frosting

Wooooowwww. This was maybe the best cake I've ever had. Devonna absolutely exceeded my expectations with this. I requested a custom Pumpkin Praline cake with cream cheese frosting with only 5 days notice, and she came through big time. The cake was ready for pickup on time and was beautifully done. And I can't explain how moist and delicious it was. It was a huge hit at our party. Butter Bakery is officially my local go to for any baked goods.

This review took me a few weeks to write because I am so sad I have to share my experience. Butter (Devonna) has been my go-to cake gal for the last couple of years. She has made birthday cakes, cupcakes, and a graduation cake for my fiancée. My fiancée wanted to order me my own graduation cake as I graduated with my masters a couple weeks ago. She contacted Devonna and they were set on the design and pick-up time. Devonna sent over the invoice and it showed $140 for a cake for 15 people. Usually we pay around $100-$120 so I checked in with her, because I wanted to make sure we were paying the right price. I tried to communicate clearly that I wanted to pay her but just wanted to double check the price was correct. This was on the Monday before my graduation. I had not heard from her so I reached out a couple more times in hopes to get her paid before pick-up. I got no response but I went to go pick up the cake anyway and figured I would hear from her soon so we could pay her. I show up to the location for pickup and the woman I spoke with brought out a cake, except it wasn't my cake, it was a birthday cake. I saw her texting Devonna and she replied back immediately, telling her to take out the "happy birthday sign" -- at this point the woman in front of me told me it was my cake just wrong signage. I told her it looked nothing like what we talked about (it was blue and white) and so she called Devonna. She said I was right, it was the wrong cake and said that Devonna would call me shortly for me to pick the cake up at her house nearby. I waited in my car for 30 mins in hopes devonna would call. She never did. We texted and called her repeatedly with no answer. I really enjoyed working with Devonna but it was the day before my graduation and now I had no cake. The morning of my graduation, my fiancée had to rush to a local bakery (shout out Delight) and pick up 2 already made cakes to replace the one we were going to get from Devonna. I've reached out since then and have had no response from her. I still have no idea why we were ghosted but are very sad we had to end this relationship and write this review.

I selfishly don't want to write this amazing review because I don't want to let the cat out the bag, but this baker is the truth! I ordered a two tier cake for my 40th and provided inspo pics as well as some toppers I specifically wanted on my cake ( I added the 40 later) when I tell you not only was the cake pretty, but it was super tasty!!! Unfortunately, often times when you buy these pretty cakes they are pretty only and lack in flavor, but this is not the case with butter bakery! I love the fact that she used actual icing and not fondant (Im sure some people request or prefer fondant) but I do not and the cake held together perfectly with the frosting! My top layer was cookie butter yummmmm and the bottom layer red velvet yummmm! Both layers were moist and delicious! I'm so very satisfied with my order and will be ordering again in the future! The reviews do not lie lol and literally everyone at my party wanted to know where I ordered the cake. So thank you for the beautiful flavorful cake!

Edit: Now the owner is a liar as well, because I have the emails they never responded too. Check the one star reviews as I'm not the only one. Not sure what a pandemic has to do with responding to emails, all that was needed on their part was a professional apology and a doesn't excuse like a family emergency, which with a small business would have been completely understandable. But instead rude lies and unprofessionalism... Original post: Terrible at responding to emails, no phone number given, ghosted me and left me having to run to Marie calendars at the last minute when they left me hanging for an event... What a disgraceful way to run a business.

Devonna is a kind, sincere baker who has made all of our kids' birthdays magical. Her cakes taste so authentic and homemade. Her butter cream is so delicious, never too sweet or heavy. She will deliver any design based on Pinterest or a photo, but add her own flare. She doesn't compromise on any of her ingredients and puts so much effort. Easy to talk to, personable, and has never failed to deliver at any of our events. Highly recommend, along with any of her savory cookies.

I was looking to bring my coworkers some spooky treats on Halloween so a couple of weeks ago I made some calls to bakeries around Pasadena. DeVonna emailed me a few days later to let me know she could make the type of cookies I was looking for, we discussed designs and prices through email, then we agreed on 35 custom Halloween cookies, including pumpkins, candy corn, black cats, fall leaves, bats, and ghosts for $105, to be ready on October 30. She seemed friendly and was flexible on shapes and designs, telling me that she'd let me know if she couldn't find the cutters for any of them. I was charged through QuickBooks on October 19, which did make me a bit nervous considering I hadn't even met anyone from the bakery in person, or have any sort of contact info apart from an email address. DeVonna emailed me on Oct 30 to let me know there was an emergency that happened that day, causing her to be short staffed and wondering if she could deliver them later. Since I needed to bring them to work early the next morning, I told her I would prefer if she delivered them later that night instead of the next morning. Despite the obstacles, she was still able to have them made and delivered to me on October 30. In the rush to get my cookies to me on time, someone accidentally dropped a box of the cookies and DeVonna texted me to ask if I wanted replacement cookies or a partial refund. Since it was 8:30pm, I told her I'd rather have the partial refund. About an hour later, a delivery person was at the front with the cookies. I noticed a card was included, but I figured it was just a thank you note. The cookies looked adorable! I couldn't wait to share them with my coworkers and I texted DeVonna to let her know as much, and she responded warmly. The card was very sweet, too. She apologized for the inconveniences and had included the partial refund in cash. My coworkers absolutely loved the cookies, as they were as tasty as they were cute. My coworkers know I write reviews and multiple people told me to "write a good review!" If I need baked goods for another special occasion, I'm coming to Butter Bakery first.

TLDR: A delicious wonderful cake made with love and wonderful customer service! So I'm the one who received the cake rather than went through the process of ordering it but I will tell you what my friends told me. So my friend Anna emailed the bakery to ask for a cake for my birthday. Long story short, the cake was in the works but when it came to a theme they said they wouldn't be able to make it in time for what Anna asked, so my friends picked out a different theme instead. Anna was a little bummed about it but glad at least to still get a cake. Devonna was able to deliver the cake all the way to me in North Hollywood. Turns out, she was able to do the theme that Anna asked for and I was in for quite the surprise! Check the photo below to see what it was. The cake was delicious and beautifully decorated. Although I don't know all of the processes that went through, Anna told me that there was great communication throughout and Devonna was very sweet and kind and tried her best to work with my friends. Thank you so much for making it work out for me. It truly made my covid birthday quite special and memorable. I did not think I'd get this kind of cake in my 20's haha. I look forward to personally ordering treats from you soon!

In a word, PERFECTION. I ordered a German chocolate cake for Dad's 75th; it's his favorite, so he's very discerning. Chef Devonna Banks' creation was a masterpiece! The cake was ginormous, gorgeously decorated, and generously frosted (some skimp on the coconut exterior, NOT HERE!). Everyone in the family declared it was the best cake they had ever eaten (sorry, Aunt Lou), and had TWO PIECES each. This is something I have never witnessed in the history of my family. Before eating, though, we all had to pose with the cake, because it was such a lovely presentation (and centerpiece for our meal). My father was over the moon, and has already called to let me know he is enjoying cake for breakfast (goes great with coffee, he reports). More about the cake: perfect fudgy frosting on top, thick, dreamy coconut/nut on the sides, and moist, perfectly-cooked dark chocolate cake inside. I am in awe of Chef Banks' talent and will definitely be reaching out to her for more bakery masterpieces in the future! (Did I mention the price is incredibly reasonable? Chef, I'd pay you twice as much for this stellar work.) read more

I chose this bakery because the reviews said everything was so good, amazing even. No one was wrong! She made a bridal shower cake for my daughter that was beautiful and the taste was definitely amazing. More than expected! Her list of flavors is excellent and we chose a lemon cake as that was the theme of the shower. Absolute best lemon cake myself and many at the shower ever had!! So moist and lemony, hard not to have more than 1 slice. We will definitely be trying more of her cakes and other items!! read more

Devonna is amazing! My husband and I wanted to do a gender reveal for our baby over Zoom with our families and cut into a blue or pink cupcake to share the news. We reached out to Devonna and she was able to stuff the cupcakes for us the same day - within hours! The cupcakes were gorgeous on the outside and I thought there would just be frosting on the inside - instead she filled them with beautiful (edible) pink pearls and confetti! It was such a special moment finding out we are having a girl with our families and Butter Bakery made it happen. Thank you!! read more

We are in LA on a short visit. Our son's in-laws invited us to dinner and I needed to bring a dessert. I don't have any place to cook and I'm unfamiliar with bakeries in this area. So, I jumped on the internet and found Butter Bakery. I ordered a dozen " Crownies " - half chocolate chip cookie & half brownie OMG! They are FABULOUS ! I am a pretty darn good baker myself and I could tell immediately that these cookies are made with the absolute BEST ingredients. The butter and chocolate were obviously very high quality - melt in your mouth! Devonna, the proprietor, was so kind to take our order on short notice. Plus, they were beautifully packaged. We had heard all the rave about Butter Bakery in Pasadena CA and even saw a video on You Tube called "This is how I became a professional baker" and then We KNEW we had to try her cookies!!!! I immediately called her bakery and asked if she would ship them to Lynchburg, VA..... she said "of course!" I went to her website at www.butterbakery.life and filled out the contact us form. I submitted my order and got an invoice and my package arrived today! Suffice it to say my entire family had BUTTER BAKERY COOKIES for an appetizer to dinner as they "just couldnt wait!!!!" to dive in!!! These cookies are simply the best!!! We are fans for life and if we ever get even CLOSE to Pasadena CA in the future, we will be heading straight to Butter Bakery to sample all the goodies!!!! Horrible horrible bakery and service. The lady told me my cake was $75 but then she sent an invoice for $150 a day before without touching base with me about the design. I asked her what was the design over text and emails multiple times and she never got back to me. I had to find an alternative one day before my event. I will never ever use this bakery again and i believe all the reviews here are fake because there was no communication between me and the baker. read more

Devonna was the best in making sure the order was ready and came out exactly as I had imagined the cake to be. I asked for a half naked chocolate cake with rustic farmhouse vibes for my friend's bridal shower and she added the perfect touches for it. After getting some unexpected great news from my daughter in Pasadena, I wanted to send something quickly to celebrate the achievement. Since I live on the east coast, I turned to Yelp, found Butter Bakery and made the call. Devonna was able to take my order, bake the "Crownie" cookies, and get them delivered (still warm!) by end of day. After delivery I immediately got texts to let me know the cookies were warm and outrageous! Will definitely order again! read more

I have a weak spot for good bakeries. When I read online about this new (to me) Pasadena bakery I had to try it. I got a Southern praline cake. Outstanding. Surprised by a little coconut in it, but it added flavor and moisture and nuance. I'll get that or the pound cake next time. Blondes are right on, to die for. Enough crunch, enough dough, lots of flavor. I froze the oatmeal cookies, I'll break those out next week. But they smelled and looked really nice. No problem getting them without raisins and with nuts, this baker aims to please. The butter toffee cookies lasted thru the night only, the family scarfed them down. Sweet, salty, crunchy, chewy. Overall the sweets looked and tasted like the were homemade. I will definitely be ordering again. read more

I can't possibly rave enough about this place. I sent a care package to two colleagues of fresh-baked cookies, and they were delivered STILL WARM along with a hand-written note, per my request. Devonna was incredibly easy to work with and made the whole process a breeze and worth every single penny. She's very quick to respond to email which you can get from the website. Not to mention, the cookies themselves were met with rave reviews. 10/10 recommend. read more

It was DELICIOUS! I ordered a birthday cake for my husband, requesting chocolate layer cake with buttercream filling and frosting. It was moist and flavorful as well as beautifully decorated. It was ready on time and packaged most attractively, making it easy to transport to the restaurant where it was served as a special dessert on this special occasion. I ordered a cake for my girlfriend's covid birthday. Being that she's a bit of a baker herself, and the cake was one of the few aspects of a traditional birthday we can still enjoy in the pandemic, it was important to me that I found a bakery that would work with me to make sure it was perfect. Butter Bakery did that and more! Even though the cake was to be delivered right before the holidays, I was treated as a partner in developing the cake idea from start to finish. The final product was a simple but delicious lemon olive oil cake. The price was right, and the size was great! What was most impressive to me is how Devonna went above and beyond. She had a ton of orders to deal with on the day the cake was to be delivered, and after a couple of unfortunate mishaps, the cake was going to be delivered later than planned. Luckily, a friend had dropped off a birthday cake as a surprise, so I told Devonna that we would be happy to accept the cake the following day. But she showed up at my house (in a mask, of course) with the cake, balloons, AND flowers. We were so impressed! She clearly thinks very highly of her customers and wants to make sure they're happy with the products she creates. It was the final cherry on top of a great experience. I can't wait to order from Butter Bakery again soon! read more

I have had the pleasure of eating a variety of the baked goods that they make. From chocolate chip cookies to blueberry lemon cookies mmmmm mmmm mmmm to a maple and bacon cake ( yes and it was so delicious I didn't want to share). Nothing artificial about their stuff. Mmmm they have these one cookies that are chocolate and soft with some powder sugar on top wooo child let me stop. Never disappointed by anything we've gotten from the Butter Bakery. You can taste the love put in it (and the butter). Plus the customer service was great!!! Which is just as important as how BOMB their stuff is. read more

This place is like the best local dinner in SD without being a dive and the food is more upscale, cooked with a lot of love - priced fairly. Best pastries and cookies, you gotta try the Oreo chocolate chip cookie. The service is friendly as well! read more

Devonna made a cake for our twin boys' 5 year old birthday. COVID has been hard on parents and even harder on kids. So we couldn't have a party with our kids' friends, but Devonna really made this birthday party for 4 very special. She was communicative by email and made the whole process very easy. She took a couple of example pictures, created a really great (and delicious) superhero cake for our boys and delivered it right to our door (and included some little toys!!). The manager told me that the host had "said it wrong" and that the other customer had a reservation. I understand that reservations need to be honored, but then why were we told that this particular table was ours after we had already waited 90 minutes? We had given our name, followed the waitlist process, and patiently waited. If there was a reservation for that table, the staff should have known and communicated that clearly. The next available table could have been given to the reservation party. What made the experience even more uncomfortable was the manager's attitude toward us compared with his attitude toward the other party. We had done nothing wrong. We were understandably unhappy because someone else was seated at the table we had just been promised. Since the confusion was caused by the restaurant, we would have appreciated at least a meaningful "I'm sorry." Instead, the manager seemed annoyed when speaking with us (think about a cold tone voice and side eyeing). At the same time, he was smiling and friendly toward the other party. The difference in attitude was very noticeable and left us feeling like we were not being treated fairly or equally. This was especially uncomfortable with the difference in our ethnicity and the other party. I cannot say for certain that race was the reason for what happened, but the combination of being passed over for a table we were told was ours, and then seeing the manager treat the other party so differently made it very difficult not to question. I hope the restaurant reviews how its hosts and managers handle situations like this, because customers deserve to be treated consistently and respectfully.

Bad communication & unorganized. I was searching for a bakery that is able to mimic the same Cookie Cake from the "big brand", Mrs. Field, but just make it better for my significant other's Birthday. I blindly called and said they are able to take on the task. Prior to proceeding, I asked for photos for reference to see if it would be up to standards, plus this is a custom order that has not been on her site or yelp that I can see for reference. Never got a response back via text the same day nor the next. The next two days, on the day of pick-up, I called again regarding a follow-up on the cookie cake and see how it would look like, so I can make any adjustments prior to delivery, and she said she can't... like what? She refused to send me images and asked to pay the invoice in advance when I have not seen what it looked like yet. While on the way to Perris Joint, I received the text that my order is ready. I arrived they mentioned it is not here yet, that I would wait for however long minutes. I was in a time-crunched that I needed at 12 pm, which the time I came. Since the person is hard to communicate with, I canceled. I'm always willing to support small businesses that I have been for years but support what I require, communication, and images of the cake that I asked for. Note: I believe this is a small "at-home" independent bakery. Pick up is at Perry's Joint in borderline, North Pasadena/Altadena. So let me tell you my AMAZING experience with Butter Bakery. I called on the day of my sons birthday looking for chocolate chip cookies cause the kid doesn't like cake. A sweet lady answered the phone and I asked her if it was possible since it was so last minute. She said "Oh don't worry I'll bake some for you and have it ready in an hour".
