Wow, this is such a sad excuse of a pizza shop. I stopped by Saturday evening and the place was a mess. Trash cans over flowing, dust pans and brooms lying around the dining area. Staff in disarray. I hoped the pizza would be worth it. I perused the display case and saw labels in front of two pizzas I wanted reading "Spicy Sausage" and "NY Cheese", so I ordered a slice of each. 10 minutes later the cashier comes to me saying they don't have the NY Cheese. SO I point it out in the display and she says "ya but we're out so I can offer you a grandma slice". Okay fine. Another 10 minutes before I got my slices while two parties ahead of me, both of which ordered much more food than I did, received their food first. As I walked out of the restaurant I wanted to make sure I had two slices so I opened my box and saw what is in the attached picture. Pretty sad display of presentation and attention by the staff to have tossed my pizza in the box like that. The grandma slice was almos the saving grace here. The flavor was good, it was cheesy, but it was not hot and the crust was just so dry. And the spicy sausage was just gross. So overly greasy and the spicy flavor was just straight heat, it's as if someone took a jalapeno and blended it into a sausage patty. I've had some elsewhere and liked the salty pop of the feta with the kalmata olives. Given my mood for something different gave it a go. Pizza arrived and looked tasty. Was a bit surprised that ingredients didnt match menu ( i.e., black olives were substituted for kalamata) Dough was also different in it was more similar to a foccacia type bread then classic dough. I did enjoy the dough but would say was a bit underwhelmed that the ingredients were different. Mmmm I was disappointed. I have been looking for a solid NY slice for 38 years. The closest I've found is Joe's in Hollywood and Foliero's Highland Park. That still stands after trying Brooklyn Square. To be fair, the slices are large. Heated to order. I only tried pizza. They have a big selection of sandwiches too. Its quite a large space, so if you eat in, lots of seating. The flavor was just not 100% there for me. The crust may have needed salt? Something. The slightly charred flavor with some chewiness that I crave was not evident. I did enjoy the white slice more than the classic cheese. Very cheesy with Spinach- but I didn't consider that a typical NY Slice. I will return when I am in the area to try the Grandma slice (Square sicilian pie). It looked nice. I think you will be fine here if you aren't expecting to be transported to NY. That is all. read more

DoorDash introduced us to Brooklyn Square and we've become fans, but today was super disappointing. Since we were in the area, we decided to pick up. The app said it would be a 30 minute wait with pick up ready at 7:14pm (no problem). We ordered a build your own square pie, garlic knots, mozzarella sticks, Caesar salad, black & white cookies, and cannolis. We got a call that the cannolis were out, so hopefully we got a refund. The order wasn't ready until 7:45pm and based on warmth, the garlic knots were made last (pizza and mozzarella sticks were cool by pick up). We're reheating food as I write this review. It's making me rethink takeout if they can't manage timing to keep everything warm warm (same experience that we had with DoorDash, but we thought it was the delivery person and not the restaurant). Not that bad actually. It's not the best but it definitely satisfies the craving for a good NY style slice. I tried this spot and then walked over to another spot and this one totally smoked the other place. Service was non existent for the first few mins. We contemplated leaving because there just wasn't anyone around but figured they were just short staffed for the evening and hung out til the guys showed up. He was very nice though! The place is set up kinda like a sports bar with massive TVs on each wall and a large beer selection with a bunch canned and on tap. Minor issue. Ordered 2 beers, and the beers were not chilled enough to enjoy. Did not really want to say anything. Part of our order came out (the pasta). Makes sense, doesn't take long to make pasta. It took approximately 25 minutes for the sandwiches after that. A customer who ordered after us received their pizza before us and it was 45 minutes later. If a pizza order was going to take that long we would not have ordered it! Afer we received the pizza, the lady just handed it over and that was that! It's unfortunate I won't go there again cause my pasta was actually tasty! The garlic knots weren't good. Almost minus one star for parking (impossible). Not even any stopping in front of the restaurant. Robbie B tip: drive south on Fair Oaks past the restaurant, cross Green Street, and turn east (left) onto Dayton. Tons of street parking there and you get your steps in to the restaurant. A fun addition are the garlic knots which are super doughy and tasty. If you've got any room left, the best kept secret at Brooklyn Square is the black-and-white cookie from New York; they are packaged but taste super fresh. On a bit of a NY-like hunt, and found this place. We ordered the BBQ chicken round pie and the Pepperoni Grandma Square Pie. Both were good! The square pie has a thicker crust/dough, whereas the round pie has a chewy crust and thin dough. I personally liked the BBQ chicken one more. SUPER BIG ROUND PIE BY THE WAY!! HUGGGEEE! First of all, this is not a criticism of Brooklyn Square. If we could add half stars, I would. First, I was in the mood for authentic "style" and taste of a generic New York pizza. My taste memory is flawed since it's been quite awhile. However, I can remember going to Ray's Pizza on broadway, Joe's, John's on bleaker etc for a slice. It was always the same, very consistent. Not much different from the hundreds of establishments serving Pizza slices. This is what I consider to be plain cheese/tomato sauce New York Pizza. Brooklyn Square is close but not really authentic. I found the crust too thick, and not crispy enough. The flavor was fairly close but not right on. And so the historic ongoing search for real New York style pizza in Southern California goes on. But to finalize this review, it's a reputable pizza parlor. I'm not knocking the place at all. It's just my own search for OG slice. read more

First time eating at Brooklyn Square, went with a group of 9. We started with the Greek salad, the Antipasto salad and and Caesar salads. All three salads were loaded with toppings and the dressing was served on the side. Then we had the fried ravioli and several orders of wings which were delicious. Then came the Penne alla vodka pasta and several pizzas. The cashier/server was so accommodating to our every need. 5 stars food and service 0 stars for Fox News/Nation on the TV. This is a very particular review. I am always suspect of people of write reviews based on service because I've been in the industry and customers suck a lot of the time. So I want to emphasize everyone I encountered was nice and the food was delish. But I draw the line at Fox. The owners and the workers have the right to choose what they show on their screens. But the free market also gives consumers the right to know too. It could be causal, it could have been just because. But I won't go back knowing Fox is on. I can't abide by a network that's trying to erase the existence of people I care about. Everything can be political and I know people don't have to share my politics. Had this one bookmarked for awhile, but after eating it, I'm not sure why. Located in the busy section of Old Town Pasadena, finding parking can be tricky, but somehow I've found parking the last few times I went to this area, so I don't know what is going on. Just lucky I guess. As for pizza, they have round pies and square pies, as well as a bunch of sandwiches. I didn't get to try a sandwich, and I don't think I will because I really was not a fan of the pizza. We got an 18" round cheese pizza half with sausage. Also grabbed on square pie meat lover slice and one square pie grandmother slice (which is essentially a margherita). The pizzas weren't terrible overall, but unfortunately the crusts were truly awful. I'm not sure what they make them out of, but they have that cardboard consistency of frozen pizzas. I know they're freshly made, but their recipe for the crust is just not good, and that's a big problem for a pizza, especially when there are better places like Pie Life, Tomato Pie, and Mama's nearby. I wanted to love it, but as a real New Yorker, I can tell you this would be accepted in the Big Apple as acceptable pizza. Sorry, but I can't recommend and will probably not be back. read more
