Saying the pizza crust at this place is great would be an understatement in my book. It's not too flimsy, and not too crunchy, but perfectly crisp. I've had a lot of pizza from New York City, to Italy, to many destinations in between and this crust is up there as some of the best especially to be based in California. That being said, I've had better pizza. The sauce really left something to be desired. It was underwhelming and a bit bland. The wow factor was definitely missing and sauce tends to really make or break a good slice of pizza. Same goes for the cheese used...It just lacked that yummy cheesy goodness you usually anticipate when you bite into a slice and it didn't help that they were a little skimpy with how much cheese they put on their pizza. I think this place would be phenomenal if they took the time to nail the sauce down and really invested in good quality cheese. They're so close just missing the mark on the flavor. The crust absolutely saves them from being bad but it still made it just an "okay" slice of pizza. The staff at the order window were friendly and helpful. Had time to kill between doctor appointments so I decided to check out Pie Life. First I have to say I was disappointed that it was listed as handicapped accessible with no warning that the accessibility is in the back of the building - still not sure what that looks like because I can't find it on maps. I can tell you though, that would be a long trek for disabled people to get to a street that would access the alley behind them. Thankfully I could sort of hobble up the stairs but many people cannot. Service was fast and friendly. I got the lunch special of a slice of white pizza and a drink for $15. Neither were remarkable. The pizza had no other flavor than cheese - I couldn't taste garlic or basil. The salad was fine, but so is a bagged Caesar salad from the grocery store. After many happy visits to Pie Life, todays visit was less than adequate. The pizza arrived and was the Vegan pizza the crust was burnt and had to be sent back. The second pizza didn't fair well either. The middle was soft and yet again the crust was burnt, it was more like a cracker than pizza crust. We put every pizza restaurant that is new to us to the same test: a plain cheese pizza. Pie Life passed the test! The sauce was delicious and there was just enough of it. The cheese-to-sauce ratio was on the mark. The middle crust was very thin, very uniform, just chewy enough to not be flatbread-crispy, and the edge crust was thicker and even more chewy. My wife had her 6 month eye exam in Pasadena. I took this opportunity to have one of my favorite New York style pizza in Southern California. I got their lunch special which is one slice of their White pizza, garden salad and sparkling water for $14.50. I added $1.00 tip. This is a no frills tiny pizza place with only a walk up window to place your order. It's on the second floor overlooking Raymond Avenue. There are metal stools and a bar like table that runs across the entire second floor. Just find a spot, seat down and eat. My White pizza was ready in 5 minutes. Pie Life is my go-to pizza spot in Pasadena. The pizza here is as close as I've found to New York pizza since moving to LA. The crust is just right, and the cheese has great flavor with that perfect amount of oil that seeps out when it's cooked, exactly what you want in a proper slice. The sauce isn't bland or generic. It actually tastes like it was made with care, with a hint of herbs (maybe basil) that gives it something extra. I usually ask for a little more sauce because that's how I like it, and they always get it right. Prices are the best I've seen for pizza of this quality in LA. I can easily put down six slices without feeling sick or weighed down, which says a lot about the ingredients they use. Some excellent NY style pizza! I ordered the margarita and pepperoni slice. The NY slices were super thin and crispy with a satisfying crunch on the crust. The pizza was floppy when folded but still oozing with oil and melted cheese. When you eat it fresh, it is piping hot, so make sure you give it a minute to rest. I also ordered the Sicilian slice--again, the cheese was super stringy and melts in your mouth. The crust was airy and was collapsing with the weight of the toppings, though it still had a nice crunch with every bite. The cupped pepperonis were delicious and zesty. Overall, very high quality ingredients and amazing pizza. The chocolate chip cookie was also yummy, though nothing to write home about. Staff were kind and friendly, and service was quick. I love the location as well--there's ample street parking and a dedicated lot in the strip mall. The seating is outdoors with a long bar stool and counter. There's a really nice of the streets view and it's shaded as you indulge in cheesy goodness. This is a solid slice you'd find on a corner in NYC, meaning this is S-tier for LA standards. This place has been on my radar for a short time. Today was the day as is every Friday which is pizza day for the family. I stopped by this afternoon at 4:00pm and ordered 1 New York style (cheese) and 1 pepperoni and mushroom for which they also add garlic cloves. These were take out orders and I have a pizza oven at home to heat up slices in under a minute. 1. The New York cheese pizza was absolutely flavorless. I was so hoping for an amazing pizza to no avail. Absolutely zero flavor and I asked my wife how she likes it and she said it doesn't have any taste to it. Pizza Wagon in the valley currently has the best New York Slice in town. Beats everyone even Mulberry street and DaMores, which are also in the valley. 2. Pepperoni, mushroom and garlic pizza also without flavor except for the garlic which was overpowering, so much so that I removed all the cloves from the entire pizza. This pizza had a nice look to it but it does not deliver. If you want pepperoni then it's gotta be Prince Street as their pepperoni is amazing. I can normally eat about 4 slices but tonight I barely ate two as the pizza didn't not lend itself to any pizza desire I had. Will I be returning, I don't think I will. Crowned by Dave Portnoy this year as the "best pizza in Pasadena", Pie Life is a hidden local pizza joint serving NYC-style pizza from a window on Raymond Street, and has been on our short list for some time. Our family ordered a full Pepperoni and Burrata pie ($30) with some olives on one half ($1.50). There is certainly something magical about a NYC pizza fresh and hot from the oven, and Pie Life is no exception. The sauce was excellent, delicate, slightly tangy, and clearly homemade. The burrata was creamy and rich yet not heavy. The pepperoni was salty and cupped upward in the way only the best pepperoni does. After watching Dave's review I was most excited about the crust, but was sadly disappointed. The undercarriage lacked the crispness sought after in NYC slices, with a disappointing amount of flop at the center. The service was friendly and effective. We put our order in by phone and it was ready for us when we arrived. Plates, plastic utensils, and napkins were offered. I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance; while ostensibly a window facing a parking lot, there was a serviceable seating area in the lot outside with tables under a nice mural for a surprisingly chill, LA vibe. The value is good for what you get. The standard NYC pies are 18" and range from $22-36. Each pie is enough for three moderately hungry or two very hungry individuals, or a price tag of around $10-$15/person. For the quality provided, this is reasonable, especially if you can get it hot and fresh. Really disappointing. I've been looking for a replacement for Domino's as the quality of their product (and quantity of toppings) has really gone downhill. Since I'm not a fan of Mamma's Brick Oven, Blaze, or Tomato Pie Pizza Joint. So I got Pie Life's Margherita Pizza, and dare I say it was blander than any of those. There's almost zero flavor to the sauce, and even the crust - and I usually love eating crusts - was pitifully flavorless. For as much as they charge, I'd have thought that I'd finally found my local pizza place, but in the end, I just discovered my least favorite one in town.
