Pie N Burger has always been one of the places on my list. When we were taking a walk, I purposely took a detour here. It's a no-frills diner spot that has been around since 1963 - it is what it is. **This is a cash only restaurant. They have an on-site ATM that will charge you fees. I recommend getting cash at your bank ATM before stopping by. We were trying to divvy up what we could order with what we had on us until we discovered the ATM. We ordered shareables, so we started with an one of the egg breakfasts combos, and added a side of pancakes and a lemon merengue pie to go. What stood out is the jams/preserves were house made, as well as their salsa. The salsa has a kick but it is good. I couldn't say anything bad about what we ate because it was SO good. I recently came back here and in regards to the layout, not much has change. The prices though... I got the "Big Ben" combo, and with tip, I was looking at around $40. Had a few drs appts in Pasadena so decided to make a day of it and wanted to go shopping at nearby stores. We parked in a parking lot that technically wasn't for them but we had no issues. Place is very small but cute.. we sat in the back and ordered quickly. I got the burger and my son got the pot pie. It was ok.. my burger was pink and that grosses me out. However, I had to update my review because I was truly shocked at the pricing for my takeout meal today. The sodas are 12 oz size and filled with ice. Typically 12oz is what comes in a kids meal and 16 Oz is a small soda at most restaurants. This place only takes cash, and has an ATM inside. The cost for this was $70. For carry out. The portions were average to small on the fries & onion rings. The pie piece was large. The food was great, as always. However, it isn't often that I am shocked by value for money. It's expensive to get takeout these days, I get it. But $70 ?! I feel like for that price we should have at least had our Diet Coke & root beer presented in a size typical of most restaurants (16 oz). The macaroni salad portion was also quite small. My friend and I ordered a very basic breakfast and coffee and paid $60, including tip. I've had great service in the past. Today was just okay. It seemed like morale was low. The diner wasn't very crowded being a Tuesday morning. We were seated quickly and were greeted by a friendly server. The coffee ($3.95) was hot and got refilled once. When we were ready to leave, I needed a to-go container. It was challenging to get someone to help me. They have an ATM you can use but it charged me $2.50 to use it. Also they have free parking but very limited. The place is small inside but adequate. We looked over the menu and decided on 2 cheeseburger combos (burger and side no soda). At $21 for each combo we thought this was high but wanted to get and try the food before passing judgement. Well my wife got a Coke and I got a diet coke. They came in small college dorm cafeteria glasses. My wife took a sip of her coke and said it was flat and I tasted it and it had NO carbonation. No problem we thought and we asked a server (who was not our primary server who was very nice) about it to get it replaced and that is when she rudely cut us off saying they mix the sodas themselves and irritatedly came off like we were a problem! We have never been here before and there is no posting on the menu signs that they formulate the Coke themselves. We basically had to override her lack of customer service and just tell her we needed another with actual carbonation in it. She came back and it was ok this time but what a hassle for a $3.99 coke! Then the food came and it looked ok. The burger was ok. It was fresh but not better than a Double Double from in an out but WAY more expensive. After eating, when getting rang up by the owner at the old school register, we mentioned everything was ok except a server, who had left for the day at this point, that was pretty rude when correcting a mistake with my wife's drink. There is a long wait if you have a larger party, so I recommend going early or going with a small group. That's a rarified statement! This "Old School" diner (established in 1963) has very few tables and one rather large counter. You get to watch the cooks do their magic making steak and eggs, pancakes and other coffee shop fare. These "Hash Slingers" are down right great chefs. That's right, I said chefs! Since his son (he's young) wanted burgers and suggested McDonald's. I decided to pick a burger spot. Whenever I can find an opportunity to go to one of my bookmarked places, I take it! The wife may say it's selfish. I beg to differ! LOL! We arrived on the early side and sat down to wait for the other members of our party. A family came in after us and put their name and the number of their party to the waitress. I didn't know! Luckily, we put our name next! The restaurant got pretty busy afterward. This is a Pasadena institution after all. There are limited tables available. Most of the seating is at the counter and you can specify to the waitress which one you want. We waited 15 minutes and they called our name for the counter. I asked for the table and waited a little longer. Carefully, it can be a long wait for a table. There's only room for 5 people at a table. I read a mixed bag of reviews on Yelp. Sometimes, the best restaurants get the biggest critics. People go in with unrealistic expectations. This is a casual burger joint. I'm not expecting 5-star service and a tablecloth dinner. If one of the items they are known for is in the name of the restaurant, you should probably order that dish. Order the burger and order the pie. It's that simple. The professor's kid wanted a hamburger but ordered the chicken sandwich and didn't like the chicken. Order the burger and you won't be disappointed! People on Yelp were complaining about the beans in the Chili Cheese Fries. It's not something you normally see in LA, but I liked it nevertheless. I really liked the Big Ben. It was a delicious-tasting burger! I like how it has a big wedge of iceberg lettuce, providing a nice crunch texture to the burger. It's the quintessential Cali-type burger with the lettuce and tomato. I was very indecisive per usual trying to decide what pie to order and the waitress was very attentive and brought me a spoonful of each to help me decide which one to order. I thought that was a nice touch! The service here was very good and very attentive! The Coconut Meringue was pretty good, but it was a bit too sweet for me after a while and I couldn't finish it after the big meal. The Boyensberry was not bad, and everything tastes better when it's Ala Mode. They use Thrifty's Ice Cream here. I would like to try other pies here, but I will for sure order the Big Ben next time I come here. I can't wait to come back to Pie 'n Burger~ Pro Tips: 1. Cash or Check only! ATM located inside! 2. Pay attention to them calling the names! They almost crossed our name off the list because we were waiting for a table. Staff is amazing. If you're looking for some old school coke (made with syrup) and an old fashioned burger, you need to try this place. Everything is fresh, but a little bit pricy for what you get. Worth a try if you have $18 for the burger combo. read more

Have been going here for years and always loved. As well as whole family. Recently I was there twice and was disappointed with the food. Definitely not the quality as before. The meat there had always been the best. Now I feel it no different than In and out. Fries were soggy . Prices up and quality down. I'm very sorry as this has been all time favorite. read more
