This cool diner wasn't on my radar...not sure how I stumbled upon this gem. Small diner that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner...offering great pies, as well. My visit was mid-week and early lunch time...everything I saw come out of the kitchen window looked very good and tasty. I wouldn't think about coming here on a weekend morning as the parking is terrible and I guarantee you...you'll probably have a 45 min wait. I came for the shrimp and grits...hoping it would have been more filling. The number of shrimp was right on...but the grits quantity was not that great. It didn't match well...not hearty. Other restaurants that serve shrimp and grits offer more in the grits amount. The mushrooms and onions topping was so good. For the price...more grits, that's all. Since I wasn't satisfied...amount wise and still a bit hungry, I ordered a cup of their creole tomato soup...that was OK...tasted a bit burnt...I wouldn't order this again...nothing to boast about. This is not diner food. It's some of the best food we have ever had. The flavors are amazing and the combination of ingredients is genius. Today we had the clhicken fried mushrooms and corn waffle that comes with creamed kale and tomato syrup. Just mind blowing good!! I used to get the shrimp and grits till I discovered this flavor bomb. My partner had the short rib pot roast with glazed carrots and buttered dumplings. Insane flavors ! I also had to try the veggie burger of the day. Chicken fried portobello with sweet corn relish roasted red pepper spread and goat cheese. Wow ! Had to get grits and collard greens too. The grits are so creamy they are divine. We got the strawberry chess pie for dessert but had to take it home after a few bites. My only problem with this restaurant is the extremely cold air conditioning on not hot days and evenings but since it's hot out it wasn't too cold in here. Still a solid place to dine! My last review was 7 years ago, so, at Yelp's suggestion, I'm updating my review. What would give it 5 stars is to bring back the biscuits and gravy. I remember they are a favorite, I think it had sweet potatoes, maybe mushroom, can't recall the details, other than I loved them. Not necessarily playing second fiddle to that fond memory, I opted for the hash.. it was AMAZING! I love ordering something that I don't make at home and this was a definite treat to the tastebuds! Established in 1948 Cindy's is a classic American diner. It's historic Googie sign, bright orange booths, hanging globe lights, & retro décor make it a popular spot for movie shoots. It's changed hands over the years and is currently owned by Chef Paul Rosenbluh & Chef Monique King, who also own Little Beast across the street. With Chef Paul at the helm menu offerings are a little more upscale than your standard diner fare but still hearty enough to feel like a good home-cooked meal. (Canadian bacon is cured in-house.) When I lived in the area, I used to come here frequently with my niece. Loved the atmosphere. The booths are really nice colors, looks like fairly recent upholstery. The booster seats are the same colors. It's got that retro diner feel. I liked our waitress but the service was slow and they messed up a lot of our order, they didn't bring some items and they gave me the kids order in lieu of the full order for my meal. The food was really good, definitely above average diner food. We got the eggs Benedict, brisket hash, chocolate chip pancakes and three items from the kids menu. My family passes by this restaurant every time we come to church in Highland Park. We were hunting for a breakfast spot open before 8 after a Passion Week early morning prayer the other day and were so lucky to stumble upon this hidden in plain sight gem. The vintagey diner feels truly authentic and not like a restaurant dressing up as a diner. Down to the group of old timer friends sitting at the booth in the corner like I'm sure they have for years on end, Cindy's is an establishment in Highland Park. I wasn't expecting much of the food, but let me tell you everything was so delightful. Huevos rancheros, chorizo burrito, and Cindy's sando (with pork belly!!) were all amazing, not to mention the house potatoes were probably the best side of potatoes I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. I'd highly recommend the Cindy's sando (but be warned it's smaller than you expect - think the side of an english muffin) but packs a flavorful punch in every bite. read more

We enjoy having lunch here about once a month, after 1:00 , it can still be busy with a wait or not. Service is always friendly and pretty prompt, though just 2 guys run the front of the house. Food is always pretty good, they really changed from a few or more years ago. It a light, airy, old time coffee shop with parking in front. It's always clean looking. The current owners took over "Little Beast" next door, we have to get over there and see if it's a marked improvement from the past. This is the perfect place to have a comfort meal at any time of day. The atmosphere is noisy enough for families but enough to chat with friends. I was able to sit at the counter for my visit. My favorite seat just to observe the dishes coming out hot. Watching pies get sliced and the delicious portions. Best spot to keep your coffee fresh and refilled. The service is welcoming and will share preferences. Breakfast for two was about $50 with two coffees. I definitely would like to come back and review more items for lunch or dinner. I've given Cindy's Diner multiple chances, and each visit has been worse than the last. Between the poor food quality and the shockingly bad service, I won't be returning. The first experience should've been my last. I stopped by one evening about 45 minutes before closing, not realizing they closed at 9. It was around 8:15 pm, and while I was turned away for dine-in and takeout. I asked if I could at least buy a slice of pie since they're already made. I got a slice of cherry pie with almonds, only to discover it tasted strongly like onion. Not sure if the pie had been sliced with the same utensils used for onions or stored near them; but it wasn't edible. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and came back on a weekday I had taken off from work. The diner wasn't packed, but it wasn't empty either. I walked in and stood there for about five minutes completely ignored before approaching a waitress who had already made it clear she had no interest in acknowledging me. When I asked for a table for one, I was told they only had counter seating. I explained that I was recovering from a severe back injury and asked if I could sit in a booth for the added back support. Despite multiple booths being open, I was told no! I was told I could wait for a smaller booth to open up, I waited about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, even more booths opened up, so I approached the waitress again to be seated. That's when she told me I'd have to order two meals because booths are "for two people." I said that was fine; I'd eat one and take the other to go. She laughed at me and walked away. I walked out. The waitstaff here have consistently nasty attitudes and are outright rude. Whether they're just unhappy people or selectively unpleasant, I don't know; but the service is undeniably terrible, and the food quality doesn't make it worth enduring. Plenty of better diners in LA. Don't waste your time here. read more

I've been coming to Fox's in Altadena for a long time. I am terribly saddened by its loss in the fires. I used to eat at Firefly in Pasadena, also owned by the same great restauranteur, Paul Rosenbluh. Some research led me to Cindy's in Eagle Rock. What a fantastic coffee shop! Old-fashioned diner atmosphere and lots of good Southern eats. Service is great, decor is adorable, and menu is fantastic. Food is delicious. Disappointing this place does not offer any genuine gluten free options. Not even gluten free toast. I am celiac and when I asked the waitress about kitchen safety she rolled her eyes at me and sighed very loudly, then complained that she would have to ask the kitchen. Ma'am, this is your job. They were able to make accommodations that were not convincingly safe, but the attitude I was given made me afraid to ask more questions. It would be great if a restaurant that has signs of inclusivity on their windows educated themselves more on serious allergies/autoimmune disorders and gave their customers more grace. read more

I have driven past this place so many times and today finally went in. My son and I had the BLT, sadly it was very messy, greasy and not good at all. Maybe 3 slices of bacon and the rest was big chunks of not ripe tomatoes, burnt bread and the fries were the worst, it was like they pealed potatoes and used the skins as the fries, super soggy and tasted bad, I told the waitress about it and she ordered me another order and when it came 15 min later it was not much better, I told the waitress that I did not care for the meal she tried to convince me it was a different style and healthier. Having lived in L.A. since 1991, I had never tried this place. I wish I would have sooner, I would have loved to have seen what it looked like then, but nowadays, it's so charming and beautifully restored to mid-century glory. I love this era and Cindy's is an aesthetic treasure. Son and I dropped in for lunch on a Friday (I had taken the day off) and were seated right away. I can imagine it would be so busy during dinner hours and weekends, but I'm glad I got to experience it during a not so busy time. There were people, but it wasn't packed, which is just fine with me. Our waitress was really nice, she had a retro style which was so cute and fitting for the restaurant, so I can tell she appreciates the Mid-Century era too. I had the fried egg sandwich which was so good! Son had the BLT and he liked it too. The only thing I would say is this is not a regular diner, like say a Norm's or Bob's Big Boy. It was packed and all the servers and bus boys were hustling! We were quickly greeted and drink orders taken. The food arrived and omg the Green Goddess Omelette was amazing! I asked to add mushrooms and YUM! My son ordered a Brisket Hash and he said it was also EXACTLY what he was craving - although didn't know it until he saw it on the menu and it was so good! Our coffees were refilled without waiting for it, despite it being so busy. The busboy kept coffees and waters full. We were in n out within an hour on a busy weekend. Really cute dive diner on Colorado Blvd just off the 134. The parking lot is small, but holds enough cars to fill the restaurant with patrons. Our party of 10 beat the breakfast rush and we were seated quickly, taking up 2 booths. The service is old-school friendly and the folks here are kind. I've only had breakfast here. Noah's Ark is a great deal: pancakes with 2 eggs & 2 slices of bacon. Eggs are made to order and the bacon holds a perfect balance of crispy and chewy. The pancakes and waffle never disappoint. Is there a hint of vanilla in the waffle? So good! This last go around I substituted the pancakes for French toast for an upcharge. Unfortunately, the French toast was gummy. You know the saying: "Is Pepsi okay?" Except nobody asked. At almost four bucks, that matters. Service was wildly inconsistent. The male server with tattoos was actually very nice--friendly, helpful, and professional. Unfortunately, the experience took a dive thanks to an older woman with long red hair who was openly rude. I asked for jelly, and she responded in a condescending tone, "You mean jam?" As if that's some shocking culinary faux pas. I may not eat here often, but let's be real--you knew exactly what I meant. She rolled her eyes and returned with a thimble-sized portion of house-made jam and an attitude to match. Overall, Cindy's feels like what Eagle Rock/Highland Park considers "slumming it"--a place where hipsters can pretend they're mixing with the working class without actually catering to them. Unfortunately, it leans far more hipster than worker, and the service reflects that disconnect. If that's your scene, you might enjoy it. We were in town for a concert nearby at the Hollywood bowl. Our first evening we checked restaurants nearby and Cindy's had good reviews so we decided to give it a try. We liked the retro feel and the orange booths. We were greeted and seated right away. My friend and I both ordered the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and a sauteed tomato. The server told us that it would be a 20 minute wait which we knew about in advance . The wait was worth it - the chicken was seasoned to perfection and it exceeded my expectations!
