We need to save SoCal institutions like Pie n' Burger. These places are what make SoCal special. They are part of our collective culture that make us who we are and remind us where we came from or why we live here. This is why I don't mind spending 24 bucks for a Big Ben burger and fries or 8.50 for a slice of pies. These places need our support or we will end up with nothing but Chipotles and Shake Shacks. Similar to the Apple Pan on the Westside, the restaurant is mostly counter with a few tables in the rear. The service is friendly and when you take a seat, I'm sure everything is just as it was in 1963 when the place opened (other than the prices). If you get a chance, check out the sink in the restroom where you use your knee to turn on the water. My burger was very good. Two thick patties, dripping with cheese and special sauce. Very meat forward, which is welcome in this age of toppings overpowering everything else. The fries were hot and crispy, really all you need. I had a bite of my friend's blueberry pie and it made me sorry I didn't order pie. Bring cash because that's all they take. We need to cherish places like this before they all disappear. With the closure of Cole's and the Pantry in DTLA, spending a bit more plus having a good meal in a capsule of living history is well worth it. read more

Hole-in-the-wall, old school lunch counter with seriously good food. The newspaper clippings on the walls about the "Best Burger in LA" don't lie - the burgers here are seriously good. For a moment I thought "hey I don't have any ketchup bottles on my side of the counter but I should as for some to go with my patty melt" and then my patty melt was so good I completely forgot to ask. The dutch apple pie was life-changing good. Yes the prices are a little steep here and sometimes the service can be a little less than warm, but it's worth the experience. I lived in Pasadena for 6-7 years, and that ended 18 years ago. But this was one of the places I loved. It's old school and simple in its approach. It's a grill and soda fountain place with pie. They have four soda syrups: coke, diet coke, sprite, and root beer. They add the syrup to ice and then add soda water. Who else does this? The menu is small. The food is really good. The service is friendly and also old school. The place came into existence in 1963 and hasn't changed much in 61 years. The counter dominate the seating. My partner and I swung by for Saturday dinner, and we nabbed the final 2 bar seats before a queue formed at the entrance. We opted for the classics: a Beef Burger, Fries, and a slice of the best-selling Boysenberry Pie. The burger was simple and unpretentious. Its bun was buttered and lightly grilled, and each component felt plentiful in a reasonable ratio. While we noted the moderately large patty to be mostly standard, we were quite impressed with the homemade Thousand Island, which was chunkier and tangier than most varieties. Hamburger- 7/10 Traditional burger and you can probably share. They do put a lot of thousand island so request it on the side to keep it clean. You're paying $18.50 for a below average burger and fries. Burger patty was not salted at all (very bland), and the fries weren't crispy or salted (soggy). I could get a much better burger for over half the price at other spots like Pharoh's or Top's. Worst of all is the service. This place is completely understaffed. They needed about double the amount of waitresses they had in there. We waited forever to get seated, have someone take our order, and to pay. At one point I saw the guys at the grill get frustrated that none of the waitresses were picking up the food that was ready and bringing it to the guests. But it's not the waitresses fault, they were nice, but the place just doesn't have enough staff. Shame on the owners for overcharging for shitty burger and not even bother to staff the restaurant appropriately. I'd like to think that a place that charges $18.50 for a basic burger and fries can afford not to understaff their restaurant. I don't recommend anybody to ever come here. The food sucks, the service sucks, and it's crazy expensive (especially in this economy, don't waste your money on this place). after many years of driving by this resturant, two weeks ago my wife and I decided to try it. I had the roast beef sandwich which consisted of four paper thin slices of luncheon beef like one finds in the deli section at Ralphs. Not only was it horrible, but for $19.50 it was a total rip off. My wife had the spinach quiche that was dark green and blackish that smelled bad and the crust was soggy like it had been the refrigerator for a week. Horrible !! This is a really old establishment, definitely not a place for a group. There are only 2 tables that will hold 4 people and then 3 tables for 2 people. The rest is counter seating. Our party was 3 of us. The tables for 4 were taken by 2 people.
