Please hire another worker already. U guys can't do this by yourself when valued guests are waiting for their take out. The wait time to sit is about 45m, to order is 15m and get food is 25m; and take out even longer. Service is so slow and feels awkward and gruff. Also, it's strange that when guests finished their table it sat dirty for 40 minutes with variety of beer bottles. So inferred BYOB was on, but wanted to be nice and confirm that we can run to corner and get some. Owner said "no, not at this time ... bc we want people to get out fast." But he didn't clean the table for 40 min, many people waiting for food (to eat in and pick up). Besides, everything is served on cheap 1 time use disposable plastic and paper. Is it only because he knew the couple earlier and allowed them to byob since they called each other by name? This is fishy. Seemed their thinking is skewed and slightly unethical in many ways. So, food is decent, but service, inequity and disregard for sustainability efforts is not; thus, giving a generous 1 star. Pls take the cash out from hiding place and hire a worker to help for goodness sakes. Person could do dishes so u don't have to serve with Costco paper plates, red cups and plastic forks. After a celebration of life for one of our very good friends, my husband and brother and I decided to try out this place that we've been talking about for awhile. Broken Rice has been talked about, all good things and we were in the mood for something different. They are known for pho, but I was really interested in wondering why they were called broken rice. Reason being that broken rice is kind of a Vietnamese staple and it is always eaten with meals, if not with noodles. I loved every morsel! I went as so far as to ask how we can buy this type of rice, which of course is not sold like that. But I will find a way because it's very easy to eat when rice is broken down into little pieces. It's amazing! Anyway, we tried many other dishes, including two specials they were offering-Alaskan crab fried rice and beef stew rice. So so so ono!!! But that's not to take away from their other popular dishes! Oxtail pho, spring rolls, it really hit the spot! In the heart of old town Kaimuki, this is a must try. Came here on a whim & so glad I did. The old man working there was sooo kind. He allowed me to sit down while I looked over the menu to decide what to order (to go order) & he also gave me iced water while I waited. He even went and opened the door for me as I left. I ordered the spring rolls which were really good. I meant to order the summer rolls, but that was my mistake. I usually don't eat spring rolls but I actually finished them all lol. I also order the Shaking Beef. It was delicious!! So tender and flavorful. I don't think the portion is worth $19 but I still enjoyed it very much! read more

So happy I tried this place! I had the rice vermicelli with chicken (very tasty) and the crab fried rice (sooo amazing). The veggies were fresh and the chicken super flavorful in the rice vermicelli dish. The crab fried rice looked so good that I inhaled it before taking a picture. It was crazy yummy with real crab!! I've passed by this place for a while now and I always said "oh I'm going to try it soon" but never did until now. I love the convenience of the area. There's parking all over the place and even though you have to pay it's not very much. I'm very new to pho but I'm slowly trying out new places to eat it. I had the chicken pho and the others had the beef pho. We also ordered spring roll and summer roll. They don't actually have summer roll now on the menu they used to have it but since they're understaffed and it takes a while to make its no longer on the menu. If you ask if they have summer rolls and they're not busy they might just make some for you too! I really liked the broth of the pho it wasn't salty at all but still very flavorful. Spring rolls are my favorite though not too greasy. The only thing I wish was if there was more chicken in my pho they don't really give too much. Service was great always making sure we had our water filled and asked if we needed extra napkins. Would definitely come back again. read more

It recently came to my attention from a very good friend that I only review when I've had amazing experiences or extremely bad experiences and that I don't often review my favorite restaurants when they have been consistently amazing. This is one of them. My go to take out place, family celebrations, we've literally introduced our entire family, friends and peer group to this fabulous restaurant! We've gotten to know the owners very well (they mostly know our pick up order will be under my husband Sheldon) and have become friends with one of their sons and daughter in law through eating here. It's a place that often brings me joy and while not your every day, lower cost Vietnamese restaurant, it's because it's by choice using QUALITY ingredients that just make your tummy purr. I'd say it's our go to restaurant when we feel like having something that we feel is home cooking. Thanks to Minh and Mrs Tran it's like coming home every time we eat here. I understand that running a business is difficult during Covid. But customers also need to have good value for their money in these times. Ingredient quality, portion size, and overall quality of the dishes here has dramatically declined recently. Example; the fried rice now contains almost nothing but rice, The shrimp are very poor quality and there are no vegetables, Just a few bits of stale egg -- with a beverage the dish will cost you $20. It's a shame to see this formerly good restaurant performing so poorly. I do not want to see it wind up like so many other of the businesses on waialae avenue now and be shuttered. Whatever the reasons: cost cutting, lack of skilled labor, etc. -- the result is some really terrible dishes at very high prices. It's going to be hard to recover their previous good reputation if this keeps up. read more

We ordered the Broken Rice special and the Bun Bo Hue spicy soup. Both were very good. Someone else here wrote the Broken Rice special wasn't quite Vietnamese style but my Vietnamese gf says otherwise -- so it's quite subjective. As for the Bun Bo Hue, I've found it difficult to find places which make this dish savory and spicy. If you haven't tried it at Pho Saigon on Kapiolani, I recommend it. Broken Rice comes in at #2 for me so it's still very good, just needed those unique extra herbs to combine and make it perfect (e.g. banana flower). Location is clean and trendy, but the seats are all aluminum so be sure to wear pants or a towel to sit on.... Brrrrrrr!! Finally, at night look for the sign which reads "Br ken Rice" because the yellow O is nearly invisible on the white sign! read more

The fried rice was very tasty and had that nice broken rice texture, but for the price I would've wanted more crab and more fried rice... Bun Bo Hue: Was better than average. Bun Bo Hue is supposed to be super flavorful (at least with my experience), and their broth was a bit bland in my opinion. The portion size is also relatively small for a grown man and the price paid. Overall, I wouldn't particularly come back here because the dishes were overpriced for what we got. I would understand if the price included an exceptional experience in this restaurant, but the customer service is almost non-existent. If "value for price" isn't a problem for you, then definitely check this restaurant out because their crab fried rice is definitely something I would get again if I had to choose! read more

Delicious and fresh Vietnamese food! Being Vietnamese myself and having grown up on my mom's home cooking, I appreciated the authentic Vietnamese flavors of Broken Rice! My husband and I ordered to go the Spring Rolls, Crab Fried Rice, Pork Vermicelli and Banana Tapioca - we loved all the dishes! The Crab Fried Rice had two huge pieces of crab leg in it! The pork was very tender. The portions were a good size, although a bit pricey, we felt the taste and quality of the food warranted the price! Came here on a Friday night, place wasn't busy at all so it was a little questionable as to whether or not the place had much to offer but I must say, we were very satisfied with the experience! BYOB! We ordered the crab fried rice, oxtail soup, spring rolls and lemon grass chicken. The oxtail soup was delicious, meat was cooked to perfection and the broth had so much flavor. Not sure if the crab fried rice is worth the actual extra charge for that small sprinkle of crab meat but the spring rolls were awesome! Came here and ordered the beef noodle soup and it was absolutely delicious! This place is BYOB, we wished we knew that prior to coming! This place is so awesome!! Found out they use quality meats and seafood for all their dishes. Very worth the price for all the love and labor that goes into each dish. Their soup stock are made from meat bones and fresh quality vegetables, they do not use any powdered base for their soups. Even their Vegetarian Pho soup stock is made with fresh vegetables. This place is Vietnamese food on flavor steroids! Their broken rice plate features 2 large meaty pork chops, that not only taste good, but are moist and tender. They offer a beef rib pho that I've never seen anywhere else. I believe the cut of beef is the same as a 3 to 4 inch kalbi bone. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and tasted soooo good. Just as amazing was the pho broth. I've never had one so rich and flavorful. It's almost like pho concentrate or ramen-esque. The owner said they don't pre-cook their food (i'm assuming he didn't mean the soups) so it takes a while for their small kitchen to get food out. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat and can see a lot of their offerings easily coming up on a list of best Vietnamese dishes on the island. read more

Small little restaurant in the heart of Kaimuki off of Waialae. I saw a picture on Ig and have been craving it for the last few days. If you're lucky enough to find street parking that would be almost too good to be true as there is only a few spots street side. There is a public parking lot across the street in the back and of course it's paid parking. Pretty cheap though for roughly an hour and a half was only a buck fifty so that was exciting. We came in and only one other table was occupied. We received drinks and menus promptly. I of course knew i wanted the beef rib pho and my partner order the broken rice plate. Our food did take some time to receive. When it arrived i asked for extra cilantro and hoisin and sriracha. The server asked that i taste the broth first without adding it to the soup. I told her i never add it to my broth it's only for dipping. She seemed happy about that. I always taste my broth and enjoy eating it without the addition of hoisin or anything else besides lime or lemon because i feel that a good broth doesn't need much and i enjoy eating it that way. She brought a small dish of it so i had to ask for more because i can use at least 2 servings of hoisin i love it. When i tasted the broth honestly, i wasn't blown away. I thought the broth was a bit salty and could taste fish sauce. I know it's probably used but it was lacking a depth of flavor. Very disappointing. Also my noodles were over cooked and mushy which i also didn't appreciate. The beef rib was fall off the bone and perfect. The brisket was not dry. Not too thin or thick. The portion is pretty small as well but it's enough i guess. The broken rice plate served with 2 pork chops was just ok. Nothing spectacular i guess your pretty standard Vietnamese pork. I was expecting to be blown away after i read the reviews and saw the pictures on IG but sadly this is not nearly close to my favorite pho I've tried here. This is only meant as constructive criticism as I understand the food business pretty deeply and we all deserve chances. I don't believe in the instant foodie syndrome that this place tends to foster. That said brick and mortar is usually a better experience than festival booth food setups. I ordered the beef stew over rice for $6 and there were literally 2 inch cubes and some chives over a large area of rice. It looked less than appetizing. This is my first time at broken rice. I kept hearing about it and followed peeps reviews. I finally got to go there recently. I had the chicken and rice which as a bbq chicken with a scoop of rice and that fish sauce. Another person with me had the short rib cubes and rice. We both thought are dishes were pretty good. And then another had the beef pho and he thought it was good too. I would say this place is pretty darn good. The prices are a bit higher than at your regular vietnamese restaurant. The place is decent in size and can fit small groups. Parking can be found street side or in one of those kaimuki lots. I would go again. As mentioned the only thing that caught my attention was the tad higher cost but it is what it is. read more

This is a completely terrible place, customer service is absolutely horrible! Our waitress was the older supposedly Vietnamese wom. Being Vietnamese too, I decided to speak to her in Vietnamese. Vietnamese is my first language so I definitely know how to speak it. She insulted me by asking me what language I was speaking and to outrightly tell me that whatever I was speaking was not Vietnamese. This is completely rude and uncalled for. I don't like being somewhere where people think it's okay to insult the customers. I only stayed because my cousin wanted to try it. Their food was just okay and overly priced. They did have one dish that was good. The brisket beef stew is actually one of the best I've had on the island. Personally I don't think that it's good enough to make me want to come back or take anyone there. That's unfortunate because I was super excited for this place. At $17, I expected a side dish of rare steak to add to the pho, but that was not offered or an option. The pork chop broken rice was legit, decent portion for my famished middle schooler. Overall, clean but not very homey. You have to walk through the kitchen in the back to go to the washroom, which could be a bit tricky/icky? I finally understood what the name meant when I ate the rice for the first time! It was my first time eating broken rice and I really enjoyed the texture of the rice grains. It was fun and different. The owner actually brought me a plate of raw rice to show me what the grains look like before its cooked. I had the Lemongrass Pork wit house slaw rice plate! At first glance you'll notice the menu is a little pricey with the average plate at around $13-$14. However, I felt that the prices were reasonable considering the portions they give and quality of food served. The pork was perfectly flavored and cooked. There was a nice char to the meat and the meat paired nicely with the house slaw, and spicy sauce that came with the dish. I was completely satisfied after eating. Less than 5 minutes after I had finished my meal I was surprised again with a free banana tapioca dessert! The owner told me that the dessert was free because I had shared their business on my social social media account. The dessert was sooo bomb... I will most definitely have to eat it again upon my return. Its a great date place and or business meeting spot. I would highly recommend Broken Rice for your next meal! We enjoy eating there at least 3-4 times a month. I love the PHO great authentic taste and the ingredients are different but good. The chicken salad is also for yummy. The owners are very welcoming and nice. I am so happy they opened up close to home. The idea of the broken rice served is unique and the taste of the rice makes you want to keep on eating that kind of rice. It's worth trying this restaurant even if you live further away. read more
