Amazing food, awesome service, and very fair prices -- Dell's Kitchen is an absolute winner. It's one of the few places I've found here that really captures that true "Japan-Japan" quality, izakaya-style staples, served up plate lunch style. We tried the kurobuta tonkatsu featuring Kyushu/Kagoshima pork, the loco moco (which I almost never order), and a side of gyoza -- and wow, everything was super oishii! The tonkatsu was juicy, tender, and deeply satisfying. The loco moco was the surprise star for me -- the burger was moist, flavorful, and smothered in one of the best brown gravies I've ever had. It was light in color, full of flavor, and not overly salty. The gyoza was equally impressive -- so tasty and well-balanced that you could really pick up each ingredient, and it was so good it honestly didn't even need sauce. P.S. Okay, wow! This was a delightful surprise. I had never heard of this eatery before, but decided to check it out based on the great ratings. They're located in McCully on the corner of McCully St. and Young St. Free parking is available in their lot, but be careful of potholes! it's very spacious and clean inside. There are two counter areas - the left side has the plate lunch menu items, and the right side has the pasta menu and bakery items. Basically you order and pay at one of the two counters, find a table, then they bring your food to you. Employees were very friendly. When you're finished eating, you bus your own table by putting your dirty dishes in the plastic bins. I ordered the Miso Salmon for $20. It took about 10-15 min for my food to arrive. The salmon was absolutely delicious! It was moist and had a great miso flavoring. It was also a generous size. The plate came with rice, cabbage salad & potato salad. Bakery side of Dell's Kitchen and Bakery is fabulous. Kitchen is not shabby at all. I asked for thick slices on the half-loaf of Yudane Shokupan ( Japanese milk bread ) and waited ten minutes...aomwthing to donwith their bread slicer. It doesn't matter cause Dell's bread and pastries are worth the wait. I also ordered their signature drink: Strawberry Matcha Yuzunade. This is one of the best iced matcha beverages that I've had. This time when I came back to Dell's Kitchen and Bakery and it was time to try their wonderful plate lunches. Met up with a friend, & we got the following - 1. Ahi Katsu plate 2. Garlic Chili Chicken plate I ended up getting the Garlic Chili Chicken plate, and I must say it was quite good! Nice garlicky taste, but as for heat in the chili......sorry I couldn't taste it, but of course my tolerance for spicy food is a bit high, as maybe that's why I couldn't taste the heat. My plate came with a scoop of - potato salad, white rice, & a cabbage salad. Overall a great deal for just $14 bucks for this Garlic Chili Chicken plate. The gyudon was a decent portion and the meat was soft and flavorful. It was a bit more liquidy than other gyudons I've had but still hit the spot. Dell's and Mio Pastalogy are in the same area and share seating, but you have to order from separate registers if you want a meal from each. It's an interesting combo, but I like that I can get both Japanese food and pasta in the same place. They also share the same parking lot. It wasn't super crowded when I came around 6, but it started to fill up. There is ample seating inside and a water pitcher which was nice. Dell's Kitchen and Bakery has fantastic Japanese-style plate lunch that is sure to leave you satisfied. They share a space and kitchen with Mio's Pastalogy (another one of my favorites), with a "cafeteria-style" dining area. The portion sizes here are pretty decent and it's a great place if you're looking to get quick lunch, dinner, or takeout. They have a good online ordering system so you can order ahead of time, which is incredibly convenient. I've tried the Ahi Katsu, Gyudon Bowl, and Loco Moco, but I always keep coming back to the Nori Chicken. The Ahi Katsu is a close second though. During my visit home, Dell's Kitchen and Bakery came up a few times in conversation. I was curious to try the bakery and food. It didn't exactly make sense when people mentioned that there were both pasta and Japanese dishes in separate parts of the space. What it really means, I think, is that the bakery and pasta dishes are ordered at one counter and Japanese dishes at a different counter. Kind of strange if you ask me. We ended up ordering from the pasta side and had natto pasta (3/5) and mentaiko pasta (3/5). Both dishes were made fresh and came out relatively quickly. The portions were decent and made sense given the reasonable prices. The overall taste was just ok and I think my Dad felt the same way. While the pasta did serve to quell our hunger, it wasn't exactly memorable either. I think it was missing a little bit of seasoning/flavor. Also the plates looked kind of neat but borderline messy if that makes sense. I also got the chocolate and calamansi financiers from the adjacent bakery which to me were too dense but my parents seemed to enjoy them. As we were eating there was a slow but steady flow of patrons picking up food to go. Parking is very convenient as there is an ample lot in front of the restaurant. While I greatly appreciate finding free parking easily, I don't know if this restaurant will survive with a lack of patrons as it wasn't very busy at 11:30a on a weekend. Service was friendly but unenthusiastic about the bakery/menu items. The overall restaurant vibe is a bunch of cheap tables in an empty space. It's has no charm or personality. Overall, I am glad I tried Dell's but I don't know that I'd seek out a meal or the bakery item at Dell's. We walked in on a Friday evening for an early dinner and were able to get a table without any problems because the spacious restaurant was fairly empty. The quality of the food is top notch. Seasoning is spot on. You can tell the chef is Japanese. Ahi Katsu plate and Garlic Chili Chicken were both really tasty and good sized portions. They came with potato salad and shredded cabbage salad, assortment of pickled vegetables and good rice. Everything was perfect!! The ambience is bright, wide open and very clean. A little disappointed. The baked goods had a lot of potential but the ones we were given were cold and old. They were only open for 40 mins when we arrived! The guy was putting stuff out but didn't mention anything about the stuff in the case being old already. He warmed up the thing I got though. Idk what it was called, the signs weren't up yet. Feelin' hangry, but don't know where to go or pick? Try Dell's Kitchen and Bakery. Located on McCully and Young, next to KFC, they have an ample parking lot you can turn into from either McCully or Young St. Inside you'll also find another name, Mio's Pastaology, where you can also have what their menu has to offer. When I first walked in, I noticed their display case of what their plates looked like. The Tonkatsu Curry immediately caught my eyes and was sold, but not till I looked at what their bakery case had to offer. Wanted to try their Cream Filled Pan, but was sold out. Didn't frown for I saw a lone Apple Cinnamon Pan calling me and under that the Bread Pudding was jumping up and down calling me also. The cashier was very helpful and with my confusion on where to order and where to pay, they were very patient and accommodating. Went to order my plate with the 2 pastries, and saw a display of their special of the day... Braised Shoyu Pork with herb potatoes! Told the cashier, to cancel the Tonkatsu and give me the special. So Glad I did! Ate in with this plate, and came in a very fancy looking pasta bowl/plate... 3 Huge Pieces of their Shoyu Pork and a generous amount of potatoes to match. First, the Pork was well braised and perfectly seasoned. Every bite was moist and tasty and paired perfectly with the herb potatoes. I'm sure I cleared that dish in under 10 minutes. If they have this dish, I'd try this out! The pastries are pretty good for a restaurant I ate Shoyu Pork from. My fav was the Apple Cinnamon Pan. Had a nice portion of apple bits with cinnamon and the bread was nice and chewy. The bread pudding was good, but wasn't as flavorful as the Apple Cinnamon Pan. I'd get both again, but on different days. Found this place as a suggestion from my banker when I asked about their food truck sitting outside their bank. My banker mentioned their fried chicken with fries was delicious, as well as their fried calamari. Then, she said they have a restaurant on McCully and I was like, "Oh, okay!" I'm a little skeptical with food trucks towards the late hours of the day, and being 2pm wasn't sure if I should chance'um and see what they had left or just go to their restaurant. First time here. One side of the restaurant has the Italian menu board and the other side has the Japanese menu board. There's ample seating even during the busy lunchtime rush hour. The restaurant was packed and it was already a bit after 12:30pm. They have several parking stalls, but I walked there, so I didn't pay too much attention. The food presentation was everything. It's been so long that I've been to a restaurant similar to this in Hawaii that takes such pride in the presentation. From the flower cut carrots to the air fry kale garnishes. Most of the Asian foods here are great. I haven't gotten to the pastas. A couple of things need more work, especially the loco moco. Sorry but the demi/gravy (not quite sure) needs a lot of work. First, the food was delicious. I had the ahi and my husband had the salmon. They did not disappoint. Second, we like that they were open and available to take our order at ten minutes to nine, right before they were about to close. We only did take out, but when I picked up the food, I was surprised to see that it was a cute little space that had actual seating room! The only reason I took off a star is that it was a little pricy--it seemed $$ to pay over $20 for a plate lunch, but hey, inflation, and I can say that at least it was a pretty good-sized portion.
