So LoML and I had the usual errands to run, and we ended up at Eastern and Kane with rather large appetites, so we decided to try Broadway Diner after looking at the reviews. We'd driven by here a million times, but had never stopped before.
The diner was doing a brisk business for a Saturday morning, but it wasn't crowded and there was no wait. The decor is cute, very "fifties style", and the place is actually very clean and comfortable. The little jukeboxes at each table were a nice touch.
After perusing the menu for a bit, I decided on an omelette Florentine and an order of fried pickles (I know, fried pickles? Wait, though, read on), while LoML indulged himself with a Belgian waffle (complete with whipped cream and strawberry syrup). The portions were good-sized and filled us up quite nicely - and the food was really good, I will say. The omelette in particular tasted great, especially dipped in the horseradish sauce that came with the fried pickles.
Service was extremely pleasant and efficient. (More on that below.)
Our only problem with this place was the prices - they were SERIOUSLY high for diner-style breakfast food. The minute we found out that Guy Fieri had been here, we groaned because we KNEW the prices would be overinflated, and in this case, we were right. I'm sorry, but 33 dollars for two diner breakfasts is OUTRAGEOUS.
We also didn't like the automatic 15% gratuity, though we do agree that the service was most definitely worth that and more. But, still - let US decide when to tip and how much, okay, thanks.
We'd maybe come again, but we'll be sure to do it when we have extra money to blow. Seriously, the food might have been delicious, but the prices left a bad taste in my mouth.
Tip For Diabetics:
At first, I had a LOT of trouble ordering here - this is a diner, so I didn't expect that I'd find a lot that I could eat, but I was really struggling to find something that didn't cost an arm and a leg, and that I could safely indulge in. It wasn't easy, I can say that. With that said, there are a few options on the menu. For breakfast, you'll probably want to stick with the eggs. Omelettes are okay, but they come with grits/toast or home fries, which of course is off limits for most of us. There's a steak and egg combo that might work for you, but of course - it comes with.... well, you know.
I got around that by requesting something else - since I can't have potatoes or most cereals/breads, they let me select from the vegetable menu, and I got a broccoli/caulifower/carrot combination that tasted absolutely dynamite. The server was really patient with me and understanding of my condition, so extra props for that.
For lunch/dinner options, most of the salads are safe, as are the combos with steak. You really just want to watch the add-ons here, because most of the time it's rice or potatoes, something that for me isn't a good choice.
I did see the "chocolate rats" in the bakery case and I must admit I was pretty impressed at the presentation. I don't know that I'd risk an insulin shot to eat one, but they really DID look delicious.
The fried pickles were just "okay" - I ordered those and ended up having to strip off most of the breaded coating because it was just too greasy and I didn't want to risk a glucose spike. The horseradish sauce they came with, however, was GREAT on my eggs. If there was a way I could get the sauce alone, I would have.
