If I have a soft spot for a particular type of food, it's got to be explained as...
1) Taiwanese
2) Stinky Tofu
3) Hot Pot
I felt like a very lucky girl when my boyfriend decided to take me for a treat here a couple nights ago. He is not the biggest fan of Taiwanese food all the time, so I was very pleased by his consideration of my happiness :')
As our first meal of the day, we came early on Sunday at 5PM and there was NO line! I've heard some horror stories about the other locations, how people go on a Tuesday at 2PM and still have to wait 1 hour... thank you Yelpers for the tip that this location has the least crowd!
Hours are conveniently palindrome & easy to memorize:
Lunch 11AM-3PM
Dinner 3PM-11PM -- Dinner price was around $13 for a regular size hot pot
We were sat down immediately and given clean, laminated menus to order from. The hot pot comes to you already cooked, and they light up the pot with fire so it remains boiling & hot throughout the entire meal. Each hot pot comes with either a bowl of rice or vermicelli. Restaurant is modern, clean and inviting.
**How to eat hot pot: Normally, you would cook the food yourself. But as Boiling Point brings out the hot pot with all ingredients cooked, this is done for you. They have chili oil, garlic sauce, and spicy bean sauce, which you are supposed to put in the small rectangular plate on the side for dipping the food into. (So you take out individual ingredients such as a piece of meat and dip it in the sauce). You can also add any of the sauces directly into the soup for extra flavor if you like.
Food Ordered:
(1) House Special Hot Pot, ingredients: Nappa, Fermented Tofu, Pork Sliced, Enoki Mushroom, Kamaboko, Meatball, Clam, Quail Egg, Pork Blood, Pork Intestine, Green Nira, Salty Veggies, Tomato
YUM! Be aware when they say fermented tofu, it means stinky tofu - which I absolutely love. The stinky tofu did not actually make the hot pot very stinky, just a slight flavor in the soup which is perfect. I got this in the "very spicy" option, and it wasn't actually very spicy, so I added chili oil... and ended up coughing because it was a bit too spicy. Thankfully, the waitresses were super attentive and brought out soup base (free refill) about 20 minutes into our meal so I didn't have to embarrass myself and ask. The pork blood is actually pork blood CAKE; there is a huge, distinct difference between the two but thankfully I am a lover of both. Pork blood cake has a rice-y consistency, while plain pork blood is very smooth and soft. What I received for "salty veggies" was actually chives, very fresh and good. I personally feel they could've given more nappa veggies though, the quantity was very small. My BIGGEST gripe is that the meat quality is not so good; definitely more dry and not tender.
(2) Beef Hot Pot; ingredients: Nappa, Vermicelli, Beef Sliced, Enoki Mushroom, Tomato, Firm Tofu, Tempura, Corn, Meatball, Kamaboko, Fired Tofu Skin, Imitation Crabstick.
My boyfriend ordered this and I got to have a taste of it. Flavor is very good for those who don't enjoy seafood taste. Being the fatty of the 2, he shared the tempura and imitation crabstick with me, both were very good quality IMO. I was slightly jealous he had a large corn on the cob which mine didn't include...
(3) Spicy Fermented Tofu @ $3.95: Pretty expensive, but I had to get it as a stinky tofu lover. This is not your traditional fried stinky tofu; it is the boiled kind. Flavor was good although not super stinky. Consistency was also pretty nice and firm. (4/5 stars)
(4) Hokkaido Milk Tea: Ahhh, I gave in to getting this because of all the rave reviews about this specialty drink at Boiling Point. It has a veryyy interesting taste, what I could only describe as a milk tea with slight coffee flavor? Pretty sweet. It was good but not to the point where I will definitely get it again... (3.5/5 stars)
(5) Sweet Milk w/ Boba: Boyfriend got this. Tasted pretty much like regular milk tea. Boba is smaller than what you would get at an actual Boba place, and softer. But somehow, it was perfect for the meal. Does not require much chewing and compliments well. (4/5 stars)
(6) Free small cup of dragon fruit tapioca for dessert. Yummy!!
VERDICT...
Ahhh, YES I AM A FAN!!! I could not finish everything, and took the rest to-go. The yummy soup itself warrants good excuse for taking it to-go. Unashamed, I took my boyfriend's soup to go as well even though it had no ingredients left. If it was my mom, she would have used the soup to make a new dish the next day, but being me I know I'm just going to drink it up. The service was VERY good, they did not give me any grief for taking it all to-go. Attentive throughout the meal, they refilled my soup without me having to ask for it. We spent about $40 pre-tip, which isn't the cheapest nor the most expensive. I hear that lunch is a better deal and also comes with free drink, so that'll be my option next time!
Yummy in my tummy!!! read more
