Crab cake appetizer was just too small to split with more than two people, one single cake isn't ideal for more than two people. Our server was too busy, I'm sympathetic having worked in restaurants years ago. Had I been given the option I'd certainly have bought more than one beer or tried a few of the whiskey selections. My empty beer glass sat there the entire meal and even though she checked on the food, refills were never offered to anyone at the table. Upfront: Our waiter was very nice and attentive. He made some great recommendations. I had the salmon, hubs had the flounder and the son had a pizza. The salmon was wonderful, but the fried thing on the bottom tasted too greasy to my son & me. The flounder was good, but it was served with corn and grits...two versions of corn. The asparagus was delicious! The pizza was ok, but a disappointment. Honestly, this is the reason I/we wanted to try this place...the wood fired pizzas! They look amazing! Taste is an individual thing, but to us something was "off". The cheese was maybe too thick or too tasteless? Maybe the dough was over-kneaded? I don't know, but we wouldn't order it again. Freshly baked bread is served prior and during the meal...it is wonderful. But the butter comes super cold so it's hard to spread. My tip: set the cup in the hot bread basket to try to help melt it. First impressions are everything! I knew from reading up on this place that the bar opened at 4pm and the main dining didn't open until 5pm. In our minds that is perfect since it gives us time to have a drink, have a few laughs and maybe an appetizer (bar food). With the above in mind...we arrived just a few minutes after 4pm with the intentions of going to the bar. When you arrive you don't really know what to do...seat yourself, wait or what?!?! So, we stood there as a few employees passed by and others just looked at us. OK...I get it...they are just opening...but in the back of my mind...shouldn't you be ready at 4pm to seat us in the bar or something? Finally a woman comes towards us and barks out that the bar is open and the main dining doesn't open until 5 and no food will be served until 5. We know (but I guess the appetizer in the bar isn't happening since no food is served before 5) and I informed her we had a reservation at 5. To cut to the chase, we went to the bar. It took the bartender a bit to come over since he was still setting up, but he was quite nice. A few ladies came in after us and sat in the bar area as well. I only mention this because the bartender gave them a food menu and the next thing I/we know...they were being served food and well before 5. It's ok...but the woman that barked out the scoop made it clear no food was served before 5. So...??? I wanted to ask/point it out, but my husband shooshed me! Again...first impressions are everything and this entire experience didn't set a very good one. On Monday's they have $7 Martini's. The prices are slightly high on several food items/entrees. Please note: They say this is where the locals go...well, we are locals...so, what is that suppose to mean to me/us exactly? I don't know. Good food, cost, quality & service is good food, cost, quality & service...doesn't matter who is from where or who frequents a place. Expect to pay a lot for good but not exceptional food. We have gone here often but things a slipping. Service was just ok. Ambience is Beach funky not elegant to match prices. I've been to St. Augustine many times but it was my first time to the Blackfly restaurant. I must say the service was excellent, our server Emma was attentive and gave us excellent menu selections. The food was excellent! The restaurant itself has a hip homey feel with fishing inspired artwork on the walls. I will definitely be coming back on my return visits. I had the scallops that were a featured special. They were cooked perfectly! My boyfriend had the Mushroom Wellington, which was really good. I was a little disappointed though because the online menu did not match the current one. They no longer had the truffle mushroom bisque and were out of the Blue Crab Capellini. Nice place just over the bridge in St. Augustine. Drinks were tasty - I had the old fashion and my boyfriend had both their painkiller and holiday martini (vanilla vodka, espresso, Irish cream). For appetizers I had the Bahamian conch chowder which was absolutely amazing - I loved it! Boyfriend got the conch fritters which he enjoyed as well. I had the blue crab capellini for dinner and had the coconut crusted lobster. Both were good! I will say mine was obviously done quite a bit before his and sitting I believe though bc it came out barely luke warm and his was nice and hot. Made reservations around 6pm on a Sat and they were able to get us right in. Staff was friendly and waiter was knowledgeable with suggestions for drinks! Ended up ordering the shrimp appetizer since I wanted grilled shrimp and the only dinner shrimp entree offered was fried. Really delicious and the perfect portion for saving room for a dessert. I usually do not tend to like Asian flavors, but the sauce wasn't overwhelming and balanced perfectly. Also got the mashed potatoes as a side--I'd skip these as they were nothing special. Banana bread pudding with the added bananas foster topping (this may have just been a weekly/daily special offering) was SO good! Highly recommend! Read the reviews for Black Fly and decided to visit based upon it's diverse menu. The decor was very interesting and the bar area was energetic and welcoming. We arrived a bit early for our reservation and had to only wait a few minutes. Mason, who waited on us did a very good job of making recommendations. I had the melt in your mouth 8 ounce beef tenderloin with the truffle butter and sauteed spinach which was fantastic! The other 3 in my party had Corvina based upon Mason's recommendation. Totally superb! The beef tip appetizer satisfied my taste buds but the seared tuna entree was exquisite- thoroughly enjoyed every morsel but decided to indulge in the banana bread pudding with vanilla ice cream- I am in a very happy food coma. Met some friends here for dinner and a drink. Vaughn, the owner stopped by to chat for about 10 minutes. He does all the artwork in the restaurant and is a very interesting person to talk with. If you get a chance, pick his brain for his art stories and what inspires him. We tried the drink of the day, which was some sort of raspberry martini. Way too sweet for my liking but I'm sure people are fans of it. For our appetizers we got the ginger-chili steak tips and the chili-lime shrimp. Both were good but the steak tips really stood out. They were very tender and you could cut them with a fork. For my entree I got the pork chop, which was decent but not great. The flavor was good but it was not as tender as I would have liked. I would definitley want to come back to try more of the menu but I'll keep my pork chop orders to the St. Augustine fish camp. read more

We came here to avoid going into town and it seems to be the only place on this side of the bridge with people in it after 8:00. They have a great menu with something for everyone. The beef tenderloin was better than I've had at the best rated NY steak houses. However, on my second visit, I had blackened flounder which was way overcooked. My husband had the pizza both times and coming from NY, we thought the pizza was amazing and cooked exactly as he asked for it. The drinks are good but the 2 female bartenders have zero personality.
