This establishment came up on a few local lists so decided to try it. Their website says fine dining and pics look somewhat upscale (hubs said they must have hired an amazing photographer and website designer) but it's casual at best. When you walk in, first thing you see is beach themed souvenirs and tshirts with their logo. The restaurant is quite eclectic with interesting artwork and fish on the walls. It has a separate bar area, but we choose a booth in the main dining area. Our young waiter was very polite and professional, nice to see these days! The drinks were both unfortunately not the best. My jalapeño cucumber drink did not seem like it was prepared by a bartender (which the waiter removed from the bill) and my husbands Hefeweizen was just average. When our server asked if we wanted bread service, I didn't realize it was an extra $3 charge on the bill. Not worth it. Although the bread was average, the garlic butter was pretty good... and ended up saving my dinner (more on that in a minute). I ordered the Sea Scallops Aglio e Olio (6 Seared Sea Scallops, Capellini Pasta Tossed In Olive Oil, Sliced Garlic, & Herbs, Topped With Arugula, Shaved Parmesan, & Garlic Bread). The sea scallops were just barely cooked enough, although could have used another 30seconds on the skillet. The pasta was cooked well but lacked flavor and needed anything on the table, which was salt, pepper, and my saving grace... the left over garlic butter from the bread. Once added, much better. My husband ordered the Datil Pepper Linguica (Caribbean Twist On Bangers & Mash, Grilled Portuguese Style Sausage, Blended With Local Datil Peppers, Served With Mashed Potatoes, Vegetables, & Chimichurri). The sausage was AMAZING but the potatoes tasted like potato flakes out of a box and the veggies lacked flavor, no sign of chimichurri sauce or taste. The place was pretty busy but service was good throughout. Since the meals weren't a hit, we opted not to have dessert. My answer to the magic question for this establishment is ... no, we will not return again. The 3 star rating was a combination of everything which was slightly below average except for the service and the sausage. Know that if I could, I'd give the restaurant 2 stars just for saying they were fine dining when IMO not even close. read more

The restaurant is located near the Bridge of Lions on the Anastasia Island side. Parking is bad. Be prepared to drive around endlessly looking for a spot. The food was good but the atmosphere was was noisy and very much a bar crowd. Dress is casual. The menu was interesting and had a variety of choices but the taste was average and nothing sensational. Calamari was tender and served with bel pepper and artichoke hearts mixed in. It was a nice addition. We had beef short ribs and chicken parmigiana(which was a one time special). The short ribs were fork tender and well seasoned. So good. The mashed potatoes were homemade and buttery. The fresh green beans were delicious. Done but not overdone. Well seasoned with button mushrooms. The chicken parmigiana was juicy and had a spicy marinara. Maybe could use a bit more salt in the breading but still awesome. First of all BlackFly needs a major update. Floors look outdated, light figures looks outdated and the seats or booth look very outdated. The decor overall is just not fitting. But if you are just here to eat and don't care about the restaurant let me tell you the food will not wow you. The blistered peppers were good but it lacked a little bit of salt. The sauce it came in was spicy which was good and too overpowering. The pork shoulder was very tender and melted in your mouth but the veggies and the mashed potatoes had zero flavor and I just left them. I would also have appreciated if there was a bit more meat and less of these tasteless veggies. The service was a bit slow but not too slow. When we were seated we sat there for sometime before someone came to see us but after it was not too bad. I think with few tweaks the place can actually be a lot better. read more

Which was overpriced crap- the best thing there was Cyrus the singer-who really should be signed already to a contract. Anyway, went here and had the pleasure of meeting Ross -our saving grace. A+: mushroom welling and chilli-lime shrimp. Both were absolutely delicious and imaginative. I loved the green beans tossed in the creamy pesto served with the wellington. A-: lobster bisque. What to say, what to say? Meh. That's it. Meh. Just meh. The food is family-restaurant in quality and style at fine-dining prices. My husband made a reservation based on the overall star review without looking at the recent reviews and because it is associated with Collage, allegedly one of the better restaurants in town. We came 10 minutes before our reservation and let the hostess know we were going to have a quick drink in the bar. Very un-politely and curtly she said, "Well you can but you have to be here by 8:45 because that's my last seating." A party of 3 showed up just before we got there and asked her if a table for 3 was available to which she replied, "Nope." This young lady could really use some practice in smiling and being nice. Seriously would cost her nothing. Our server was about the nicest and best part of the evening. Otherwise, everything else was meh. We had a scallop appetizer that was on the special. The sauces that came with it were nice but the three scallops were way overcooked to the point of shrinkage. It seemed a runner was grabbing the dishes and bringing them to the table. This means there was no double-checking. I ordered the coconut-crusted lobster tails from the regular menu. I don't know what happened here but I just ended up getting steamed lobster with mashed potatoes and a side of vegetables. Drawn butter that was to replace the gluten-filled sauce was missing and so was the coconut which I was assured was gluten-free. My husband got the Seafood Fra Diavolo. This was missing any spice to it, basically heat and also the bread that was supposed to come with it. The bread was brought out after request and it was covered with pesto. He thought it was the best-looking thing on the table but it was too salty and he had to scrape all of it off. We asked the waitress about the lack of heat to the FD and she said that theirs is "in the middle." I interpreted this to be a 5 out of 10 on spiciness level with 10 being the highest and my husband interpreted as there would be a sprinkling of spice in the center of the plate. Neither was true. Without asking our waitress talked to the manager and he offered us free dessert. This would've been nice but neither of us wanted it and I'm sure they probably didn't have gluten-free. As a final point, we both enjoy reading the little stories inside the menus about the owners of restaurants. These are always, usually wonderful family stories. Not this one. It was simply loaded with how great the owners thought they were, bragging about their different endeavors to the point where you feel like you're being asked to consider yourself how lucky you are, you mere commoner, for being here. Also, why plastic straws at such a marine-centric restaurant? So wrong. The artwork is fun but do not be too impressed. These are basically photographs that are entered into a computer program, color enhanced, and turned into paint by the number appearing large-scale prints. We came to St. Augustine to eat at another restaurant to be honest, but they were closed so we thought where can we go now? My friend read a bit on BlackFly and it was close so we came here. This restaurant was started by a couple who liked to travel and taste many cuisines with a tropical flare and we wanted fried shrimp so we ordered it! It was 7 large, split, crisply, tasty fried shrimp, with a side of roasted veggies-Brussels sprouts, yellow squash, tomato half and fries for $19. I didn't want the fries so I got a large serving of spinach sautéed with garlic. Everything was delicious, I mean delicious! The shrimp sauce had a little datil pepper but not real hot..just tasty! Black Fly restaurant is our 'go to' date night place. The fried shrimp are phenomenal. I love the spicy salmon dish. If you want a more informal experience then you can get seated in the bar area where they have an authentic brick pizza oven. The pizza are like flatbread and they offer take out for pizza. Black Fly's staff are very friendly and attentive. As a local, their food is supremely consistent and the accept reservations!! read more

Delicious food! I ordered the Shrimp & Conch Ceviche as an appetizer. The presentation was delightlfully crazy! A beautiful giant Conch shell filled with Local Shrimp, Caribbean Conch, Tomatoes, Red Piquito Peppers, Jalapeno, Avocado and served with crunchy Blue Tortilla Chips. Tastes fresh and flavorful. I had the Dynamite Salmon as my entree. It was one of the best dishes I have ever had. The Chef takes a spiced Salmon Mignon, Spicy Crab Aoili, a Tempura Sushi Cake, wilted Spinach and layer it atop an Avocado Wasabi Mousse! It is wonderful and such an imaginative treat! My husband and I made a reservation for Monday night at 8:15. After viewing the lights downtown, we headed across the bridge and arrived about 15 minutes early. We waited for about 10 minutes, but we're seated at our reservation time. ***Major shoutout to the hostess. She clearly had a foot injury (she was in a boot), but she was not using that as an excuse. She worked hard the entire time we were there, seating people, bussing tables, and going back and forth across the restaurant.*** I do not remember our waiter's name, but he is one of the best servers I've ever had. He was knowledgeable of the menu and had a great rapport with us and with his other diners. Positive and polite, just a joy. The food was wonderful as well. The conch fritters were our appetizer and I was pleasantly surprised (as I had never had them before). Our drinks were a treat- definitely recommend the blackberry mojito. The lobster and shrimp stirfry were our entree choices. The sauces on both were delectable, original flavors. The beans and mashed potatoes could have been seasoned more, but the brownie for dessert made up for it. My one suggestion would be to refrain from using "fine dining" in the opening tag line of the website. While we so enjoyed our service and food, Blackfly is not a true "fine dining" experience. Though we loved it and would definitely return on another trip to St. Augustine, for a fine dining experience, I would choose something different. Lovely restaurant and wonderful service. I had the Conch soup and Greek pizza and my daughter had the Steak arincini as appetizer and Wild mushroom Wellington for dinner. I couldn't find the conch in the soup if I ate it in the ocean and the taste was lacking. The Greek pizza was ok but I had to ask for marinara to give it some flavor. Maybe some garlic and salt would have helped when baking. My daughters Steak appetizer was bland to say the least and two tiny slivers of Steak bite was it on top of a polenta cake. The wild mushroom Wellington was very punchant of Truffle mushrooms and the taste was overpowering and could have used some meat for substance. I was surprised by the 4 1/2 star rating and was looking forward to an amazing meal that fell short. We have been visiting st augustine for years and herd this place was good. First parking is very limited. I got conch fritters which were hard and doughy. Then I got coconut crusted lobster tails, 3 half tails, which tasted good but only had one bite of meat in each of them for $38. My wife had a steak which was pretty good. Decor was nice, service ok. Sadly, our dinner at Blackfly was very disappointing last night. We visit Blackfly about once every other month - I especially love the ahi tuna! To rate the dish that was served last night for $40 was less than a 2. The tuna was over cooked, very tough, not the pretty dark red and oily type that was served to me previously. My other half had the triggerfish which wasn't terrible just very bland in flavor. To end, We always finish our meal with dessert but we're so disappointed in our main meals we decided to get the check and go elsewhere for nightcap. Our waiter, bless his heart, doesn't like seafood so we felt he wouldn't really value our critique. Instead, we spoke to the manager just to provide some quality feedback. However, speaking with him was like talking to a car salesman. We felt he would have been more interested ensuring that us locals were more satisfied but just encouraged us to come back. We will be putting a pass on Blackfly for a while. The second picture shows the usually ahi tuna as served (tremendous and delicious!) and the first shows a snip of what it looked like tonight. Visited this restaurant based on the reviews posted and it did not disappoint! The service was excellent along with the food and drinks. We started off with a Tropical Margarita and a Dirty Martini. They were both wonderful. Our appetizer this time was Steamed clams. The sauce was a bit different than we are used to, but delicious regardless. We shared a Cesar salad and everything was amazingly fresh! We had the Trigger Fish & the Blue Crab Cappelini. They were fantastic. We splurged and had the creme brûlée for dessert..... yep, it did not disappoint! When you're looking for a great meal, don't pass up BlackFly! Nice find while we were staying in St. Augustine! The restaurant is decorated in a vibrant, colorful fishing theme which my husband loved. Plenty of seating and a nice bar area as well. Service was excellent. We were very impressed with the speed that we received our drinks and food. Our server was friendly and personable as well as everyone else who took care of us. We started with the conch fritters and crabcake app. Both were excellent. The fritters were fried perfectly, not greasy at all and had a lot of conch in it. The remoulade it came with was tasty. Crab cake was perfectly cooked and had a nice crab to breading ratio. I had the seafood trio. Highly recommend. It was delicious! The sauce it came with complimented the dish well. My husband had the catch of the day and our son got the other special they were featuring which was a Korean short rib dish. I had bites of their food and it was also delicious. This place is way to expensive, it tries to be high end but flops with bland food. I had the Jumbo shrimp dinner with fries & veggies. The shrimp was not seasoned, only got 8pcs it was just kinda bland. Then the green beams were undercooked, very crunchy mildly warm. Was not happy with it especially with the 23 dollar price tag. Also the theme was weird in general, style is all over the place and dark inside. The menu is just as underwhelming, not lot of options. Strangely for a seafood & steak place they had a whole page of pizzas. The staff were very polite and apologetic for long wait. Place was packed on a Tuesday night.
