Not sure why this place currently only has 3 stars on Yelp. BlackFly is a pretty good restaurant. It is a (new-style) American restaurant serving (of course) seafood, pizza, pasta, soups, salads, and steaks. There is something for most appetites. I thoroughly enjoyed my pistachio martini (really strong though, and instead of a sugared rim it was a pistachio'd rim) and root beer creme brulee (loved it! - $6). Their focaccio bread is pillowy and filling (FREE!) and their Farfalle with Smoked Almond Pesto (with Tomatoes, Cannellini Beans, Kalamata, Feta - $14) had a perfect balance of savory flavors. My friend ordered the black bean hummus with chips (the dark flavor of the hummus was nicely balanced with a garnish of diced tomatoes - $6) and she ordered the Mango Sorbet (with Coconut Sauce, Toasted Pistachios - $6). I didn't try her dessert, but the appetizer was tasty. The waitress we had was the perfect picture of customer service. We asked for split plates and she was really understanding and helpful. The price is too pricey for someone on a budget but with two great friends sharing the costs, it was well worth the visit. There is a bar area and a dining area, so it's a great place for both families and happy hour. And definitely a date night kind of place. Beautiful decor and equally delicious food. "You're charging premium prices for this sh** ?!?!" -Gordon Ramsey. Not even he would eat here. Does the chef know anything about seasoning? For starters when the plates were brought to us, we were both slapped in the face with a strong odor of fish. We did in fact order fish and do understand that there would be an expected slight fishy smell; however, we ordered the "specials", they should be fresh and should have hardly any fishy smell at all. It was stomach churning from the beginning. Both meals that were ordered were unseasoned. The most bland food I have ever encountered in a restaurant. I was confused at what I was eating. The menu said risotto with parm, there was no taste of cheese at all and I though I was either eating chunky mashed potatoes or unflavored tapioca (rice pudding). I am being honest. Seasoning is not a four letter word, use it!! The green beans were also raw but burnt. How can one manage to do that? My fish had uncooked diced peaches on top of it. Confusing!! Rolled into town on Friday around 8p.m....day 6 of a Florida whirlwind tour. Picked up a copy of the current Restaurant Times at our hotel and after checking in started searching for our dinner venue. Blackfly caught our eye and we recalled that we'd passed them on the way into town. Checked Yelp for reviews, liked the menu and after confirming they were still open for dinner (surprised that many restaurants in the area were already closed at 9), we walked to the restaurant. Started out with a cocktail and tried something new, the 10 Buddahs Martini. A little different, but tasty. Moved on to the seared scallop with creamed leeks and arugula/radish salad...I've never had a more perfectly seared scallop. My friend had the dinner special, lobster thermadore, and it was fantastic. After waffling over the slow cooked pork shoulder, I opted for the Anchiote chicken prepared with free range organic chicken breast over creamy jasmine rice and a savory combo of corn, cilantro and Shishito peppers, drizzled with Anchiote-chili jus...to die for. Brianna, our server, was great, putting up with all of our questions and answering our every need. Great job Blackfly! Would update the cost rating from $$ to $$$ though. While there are menu selections I would characterize in the $$ range (apps, sandwiches, pizza) most of the entrée offerings were a little pricier than that. read more

BlackFly is an excellent restaurant. We started with the conch fritters, which came out burn-your-mouth hot (this is a good thing). They were tasty and the remoulade served with it was excellent. I got the roasted pork shoulder which came with a jicama slaw and Bahamanian rice. The pork was fall-apart tender and delicious. The rice was beautifully seasoned and the slaw had a great acidic punch to cut the richness of the pork. My wife got the mushroom wellington which I had a taste of and it was even better than my pork. The mushrooms were earthy and the dish was deliciously rich. My MIL got the scallop app as an entree and she said they were perfectly cooked. Service was great and my wife and her mother both found our server to be a dreamboat so there's that, I guess. Everything on the menu looked good, but there wasn't as much seafood and fish on the menu as I would have expected. I ordered the lobster pizza and it was excellent. I prefer a lot of red sauce on my pizza and this didn't have any red sauce. And there wasn't much sauce at all, but the flavor allowed the lobster to stand-out with the shrimp I added for extra protein. It was a great tasting, and unique pizza for me. My wife ordered a pasta dish and she said it was one of her favorites ever!. Sorry, I don't remember which dish she ordered. The reason for the 4-yelp vs. a 5 was the price. The value for the dollar is challenging and although the service was great and the food tasted good, the quantity for the money was lacking, although we had enough food. The pizza was good. Not mind blowing in flavor or originality but good. If we only had the pizza the review would be higher. EXCEPT the waitress in the bar area was AWFUL. We ate here on a Monday night around 9 as it was one of the few places that was still open in the area, unfortunately, weren't aware how pricey it was but it was totally worth it! I ordered their fresh catch of Mahi Mahi tuna and it was hands down the best I'd ever had, my husband even tried it (he's a simple eater) and wished he'd ordered it. Thank you to our host at the hotel that we were staying at for suggesting this restaurant. We asked for a restaurant that wasn't one that tourists go to and he suggested this one. Just go. I visited Black Fly on Friday for dinner with my friend. I really loved the decorations of the restaurant, because it kinda gave the feeling of being 'under the sea'. It was a bit confusing at first since we entered on the side of the place and came through the bar area and as we walked further in the setting of the restaurant. I loved the fish art. The food was really good. I had the fried shrimp and it has been a while since a had shrimp that tasted that good. I especially liked the shrimp sauce that had a hint of spice to it. Definetly worth the price. Something that the establishment can improve is for people coming through the side have a sign for them to know to walk further in. Our server took a bit of his time coming to us, while I did notice he attend to other tables immediately. Parking is also a bit of a hassle. One touch that I believe really makes this place cool it that the owner or manager walks by each table and tries to make conversation with each guests. They approach you in a friendly way that eases you to talk to them. All in all, it was a good dinner experience! read more

You Definitely have to check this place out! It is a little but off the downtown main drag in St Augustine (right across the Bridge of Lions) but is very easy to access. The food was great. We got the sugar cane scallops and the dynamite salmon with a spicy tuna roll to start. All of the food was cooked to perfection and the flavors were great. My hubby and I FINALLY made it to Black Fly. The last 2 times we had reservations, those pesky hurricanes, Matthew and Irma, rolled through! Everything about our dining experience was perfection! I wanted the seafood trio, but am not a big fan of curry. I talked to our server, Matt, about it and based on his explanation of the meal, I decided to get it. I was NOT disappointed. The dish consisted of a tasty crab cake topped with fresh mahi and grilled shrimp on the side. It was topped with Ginger Lime Jicama Slaw Tossed In A Citrus Vinaigrette Over A Red Curry-Mango Butter Emulsion (took straight from the menu). Every bite was a flavor explosion in my mouth. My hubby had the fried shrimp and they were fresh and flavorful also. Our server, Matt, was very attentive without being pesky. We never had to wait for drink refills and our food was brought out quickly. As we were wrapping up, Nick (the GM I believe) asked how everything was and we raved about the food and service. The main reason I pbky gave it 4 stars was because we were put in the back dining room which got loud and made it difficult to talk to each other at the table during our meal. Hors d'oeuvre hour also included the chorizo stuffed mushrooms and plenty of solid drink options. Service throughout the night was fantastic and friendly. My main course was a perfectly grilled flounder filet on top some freshly steamed seasonal veggies. The butter wine sauce was fantastic, however the mashed potatoes were grossly over salted and inedible. I sampled her steak and it was actually even better.
