Being from a part of the country where black flies are a tiny but painful nuisance for a couple of weeks each spring, the name of this restaurant was as off putting as one called The Sinkhole would be to a Floridian. Not a whole lot of curb appeal to the place either. But names and looks proved to be deceiving in the case of this restaurant on the St. Augustine Beach side of the Bridge of Lions. This place has great food! Flavors are just incredible. We got two appetizers... shrimp fries rice and the filet bites, they weren't very big portions but it was really good. We were able to nail a reservation here last minute. Its a casual but nice fish and more restaurant that also features flatbread pizzas. I had the Ahi Tuna dish, it was very delicious. She had scallops and didn't waste a bite, in fact everyone at the table finished their food. They have a broad wine list and some local beers on tap. It is walking distance from old town. Went to the Blackfly for the first time with a couple of friends, and had a great dining experience at the restaurant. The restaurant has a sit down bar area on one side and a sit down area that is separated in the middle by the walking entrance. The atmosphere is casual dining and the deco within the restaurant is great. The waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and even recommended the scallops as an appetizer, which were amazing. The meal comes with fresh bread while you wait for your food. We had the Chef menu catch of the day which was Yellow Snapper stuffed with crab meat, everyone else ordered the steak and lobster meals. As you can see from the stars the meals came out fresh and tasting amazing no complains. The lobster was seasoned well that no butter was needed because it came with a sauce that you could use. We had one issue with one of the steaks not cooked too liking and they quickly resolved the situation by bringing it back and cooking another steak on the grill and even offering our friend a free desert. Most places would have brought the steak back and recooked it not them. The level of attention and customer service was on point and impeccable that on top of the food selection you will be wanting to come back for more. If you are looking for a Surf and turf type of place then give this place a shot and you will not regret coming here. Found this little gem when looking outside of the crowded downtown area of St Augustine. They have a lot in the back to park which was convenient and took reservations (I recommend making one as it was crowded). The menu was diverse and it has a full liquor bar plus a list of handmade cocktails which was excellent. We ordered the conch fritters as an appetizer and they were tasty. The meals were excellent - Seared Ahi Tuna and Lobster Gnocchi. The bread pudding for dessert was absolutely delicious. Very good service and a pleasant ambience. We were rather disappointed with our dinners considering the cost of 2 entrees, 2 drinks and 1 dessert (we also got one free dessert since it was our anniversary). My husband was looking forward to the tomato sauce-based seafood medley on linguine, which we saw in the online menu, only to find out that it had been eliminated a few days before. He settled for the capellini in a crab cream sauce - it was thin spaghetti (not capellini) swimming in a lake of butter, cream and lump crabmeat. It was good but a bit bland. I had the fried rice surf and turf, which was quite tasty, except that the few "tenderloin" tips dotting the dish were inedible - so tough and full of gristle that I could barely cut it, let alone chew it. There were only 4 medium shrimp. the dinner was not worth what we paid, so it's unlikely we'll return. read more

We were visiting St Augustine and we're staying close by to this Seafood restaurant. It got great reviews so off we went. The appetizers were terrific. The calamari was perfectly breaded and tender with a lovely marinara sauce. The drunken clams were delicious, a bit spicy and the broth was amazing to soak up the bread. We decided to share the Baked flounder. I was excited to have flounder as living in the midwest I rarely get to enjoy this delicate white fish that I grew up enjoying on the east coast Unfortunately it was buried in so many breadcrumbs, it made it dry and pasty. I actually coughed as I ate it since I inhaled the dry crumbs. Such a shame to cover a nice piece of fish like that. Service was subpar and food was average so it was a big disappointment. We ordered the seared sea scallops, conch fritters, and Mediterranean pizza. All three were average, good but not great. Disappointing because 1) we've had FANTASTIC food all over St Augustine and 2) the staff at the wonderful Marker 8 Hotel and Marina highly recommended them. We ate in the bar area and the waitress/bartender Brianna appeared irritated that we didn't order alcohol so proceeded to ignore us the rest of the evening. 8/13/21. Had dinner here tonight with the wife. The place was highly recommended by a local. The owner is associated with Collage in the historic zone, one of the finer restaurants in the St. Augustine area. I made a reservation the prior day via Trip Advisor/Open Table. Was told 7:45 PM was the first table available, a little late for me, but I booked it. I figured I'd check back on the 13th or call to see if there was an earlier sitting available. BlackFly doesn't open until 5:00 PM...so I checked Open Table at 4:00 and nothing earlier was available. I called BF several times from 5-5:30 and their phone was down, no answer. I checked OT again and saw a 7:30 opening, booked it. I checked back a few minutes later and saw 7:15, 7:00 and 6:45 openings. I booked the 7:00, my preferred time, and cancelled the 7:30 booking. Things would be so much easier if you can just call "someone" vs all the electronic craziness we're constantly pushed towards. We got there, parked the car in their lot, a great convenience not found across the bridge. Entered the restaurant and the hostess, a very friendly and pleasant young lady, sat us down straight away. You walk in through the bar area which was hopping. I think we'll come back at a future time to sit at the bar and enjoy the goings on. They will serve you at the bar from the full menu. Good to know if dinning room tables aren't available. The decor was similar too many seaside seafood houses. I had a house salad...good, fresh greens and not overly dressed, a hanger steak with seasonal vegetables and a side of asparagus. The vegetables and asparagus were cooked just right. The steak was a little too charred on the outside but medium rare on the inside as I requested. I chose not to have any of the several steak sauces they offer. The wife had the catch of the day, Mahi-Mahi grilled with vegetables and jasmine rice. This dish was okay but the fish was dry and slightly over cooked. The waitress was pleasant and efficient. The owner stopped by for a chat. Discussed with him my booking experience. He said he does a lot of booking through Open Tables and sometimes they manage booking times depending on requests and if there's a large party being served, which apparently there was. He said you can always call, but then said his voip phone was down. The place is pleasant enough, the food good and prices are reasonable. If there is a next time we'll sit at the bar. read more

We had dinner at the blackfly the other night & I reviewed it and gave it 3 stars. There's a room behind the bar where we were seated and between the noise and the uninspiring food - we walked away disappointed. We give it another chance tonight & I'm so glad we did. I had the strawberry salad with chicken to start. It came on a bed of spinach with almonds and a delicious champagne dressing! For dinner we split a Margarita pizza which had red sauce, mozzarella and basil - out of this world good. Our waitress was a doll and the food was reasonably priced given the high food quality. Date night with another couple last Friday night. Arrived 8:30p on Friday night and as usual, it was still packed. Used Open Table to RSVP no problem. We ordered a round of drinks and two appetizers, Chicken Satay (ok) and Spicy Tuna Roll (excellent). For entrees, two of us ordered their signature Salmon dish wrapped in seaweed and topped with a creamy crab sauce over rice with a wasabi paste on the plate. It was amazing! The others ordered steak tips and salad which also great. Our server was ery attentive. Really have nothing negative to say about this quaint little seafood restaurant in Davis Shores. We dined at BlackFly last night in the recommendation of a hotel employee. We were not impressed. The food was just okay. The biggest issue we had was the speed of the food. We were there for an hour and a half before our entrees came to the table. This was only after complaining to the owner. We had the chili shrimp appetizer, lobster Mac and cheese and an 8 ounce beef tenderloin. The food was okay at best. Thankfully to right our situation the owner comped all of our food. read more

Tonight was the first time we have been out to eat since January and the pandemic started. We read other reports and almost did not go. But we went and judged for ourselves. Not as many tables set up, the booths have a high glass section between all booths and 3 tables out side. Ok so they did not have masks on that was the only thing. But our waiter was not close to us and polite. The place was spotless, the waiter was great and of course the food did not disappoint us. It was crowded when we got there. We arrived early for our reservation and decided to get a drink. We ended up being sat about 30 minutes early. George was an amazing server who really made our night with a chili lime shrimp appetizer recommendation and a reminder to wipe the sauce with the bread. It was delicious! We ordered salmon dish and a lobster dish, fantastic. We had two signature cocktails of a Mule and Love they Neighbor. Definitely will make our way back then. We were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and we didn't tell them. We didn't need to, we felt treated special from the beginning. read more
