Normally I don't like to leave bad reviews, but this was necessary. Once we were seated, we were asked if we wanted coffee, we responded no, yet it was still brought to us and the server did not seem to care. The restaurant was pretty empty, so we did not expect much of a wait. We had put our menus down to symbolize we were ready to order our food, yet 15 minutes and by and nothing. So we decided to wait a little longer, once no one came to even take our order, we started getting a little frustrated. So after 25 minutes of no service, we decided walk out. First of all, William at the Sequim location was 5-star. If we could rate only him, he would be off the chart, 10-stars. He was hospitality through and through and should consider a degree in hospitality management (WSU has a great one ). Black Bear is known for ginormous portions (think 2 plate passes through a buffet for 1 meal). You know what you're getting. The theme is fun, when you're on vacation and you know you'll walk out with a full belly even if you don't finish your meal. It's pretty reliable that way; good and decent food. My wish would be that BB invested in less quantity and a higher quality of recipe. Spices are good. Lastly, in staying at the HIE next door, we ordered takeout and asked to purchase wine as well, after seeing the 4 bottles on display. William went to get assistance for the purchase and the waitress he asked basically shamed us for asking, "They have to drink it here!!!! You can't sell them the bottle of wine to take out!!!!" Well, actually many restaurants do just that - actually down the street, the Alder Wood Bistro does sell wine with take out, as do many restaurants. Anyway, you lost out on your 60% marked up bottle of wine. LOL read more

We stopped here on our way out of town from the Olympic Game Farm (which is a MUST!!!) and enjoyed a really great meal. We even got a molten lava cake at no charge for showing them my Yelp coupon. Cindy's service was impeccable and she never missed a beat with the tables around us. The portions are HUGE so if you're not ready to eat like Paul Bunyan, choose something form their "a little less" menu. As much as we enjoyed our dinners, the salad and corn bread muffin that came out after we ordered would have been enough and were SO great. The meatloaf was just ok (according to my hubby) and the CFS was good but had a little more breading that I would have liked. Ask for the gravy on the side cause they LOAD your plate with it. I loved that the green beans were served with bacon and the ice tea was actually dark and tasted like tea. I can not say how wonderful this place is. The food is good. Good portions and good taste. What really makes Black Bear Diner stand out is the people. I came here on the 4th for my twins birthday. I had gone in prior and they agreed to store some birthday cakes for them. After dinner the staff came out and sang to the twins. It made there night. They where so impressed and happy. We went for Memorial Day breakfast. They were unsure of the wait: "maybe 15 or 20 minutes? I just got here so I don't know." When told after 20 that it would be another 20 "we didn't staff for the holiday," we settled for two cream pies which were reasonably tasty. We got take out for dinner due to proximity to our hotel; medium hamburger was dry and very well done. They provided no condiments for burger or fries. 5 stars for the food- it was pretty good. -4 stars for the service. Godawful, embarrassing really. I come in and there are two hostesses/servers at the counter. One is busy. They both completely ignore me though the sign says "wait to be seated." A minute later a guy comes up to pay and is immediately helped. Ok, weird. Benefit of the doubt. Couple more people come in, nobody is greeted. Then after one of the hostesses is done ringing up a guest they literally look PAST me and ask the couple behind me if they've been helped. They say no, then the lady asks me if I have, I say no. She then tells the people behind me the server will be right with them. I don't know if she's someone's relative who was cheated into the position but they don't deserve the job. It's not hard to smile at someone or say hello, one moment please. Finally when I was seated my server (Allen) took my order after only five minutes or so. He was fine. When it's time to pay I go up to the counter and shortly after a girl comes up and starts typing on the computer. Doesn't say anything to me. Then the phone rings and she answers. She helps them for a few minutes and then comes back to me. No "thanks for waiting." Whatever, I pay and leave. Long story short- you're better off going to Burger King where they actually acknowledge your existence. read more

Normally I don't leave reviews and in fact I have left two bad reviews for black bear diner, specifically the one in Yreka California. However, yesterday I stopped in Sequim and there was only the hostess/manager and one waitress. Between the two of them they ran the place like a well oiled machine. When the hostess needed help the waitress helped her out when the waitress need help the hostess/manager helped her out. My food was delivered to me in the normal amount of time and my coffee cup was always full. They even supplied me with the newspaper. I enjoyed watching the two of them because they were so efficient but also, and I know I probably shouldn't say this but they both had cute little figures and they were attractive. read more

Very good customer service!! Their staff works hard! Went there for breakfast and just got your standard two eggs plus bacon,hash brown, and toast. It was very good, they give you a lot!! It was really good bacon nice and thick but not too big. My boyfriend got their biscuit instead of the toast it was huge. Tasty food I wouldn't mind coming here again for breakfast. Usually Blackbear Diner is a nice treat for us. Today I tried the stuffed blackberry french toast. When it says "blackberry" I expect berries in the french toast, not a gel that was lacking good flavor. I expected pie filling like texture with many berries, instead it was a gel, with no berries. I don't recommend this dish. Sadly disappointed. I gave it 4 stars because everyone else in the party had good food. Orders were chicken fried steak, veggie omelette, and chili scramble. Keeping in mind this is one of many in a restaurant chain so the food quality, service etc. etc. will likely vary a lot from place to place. The BBD here in Sequim, WA is in my opinion well above the average chain style restaurant i.e. Dennie's and others. Some of you reading this may not understand but if you compare apples 2 apples and normalize the data, BBD would clearly be either on top or near the top. Oh and the portions are LARGE! Was in town last week. Ordered the eggs Benedict with bacon and avacado to go. Waited a ridiculous amount if time. I.looked.in the bag and at cursory glanxe it looked right. Grabbed it to go. Get a mile or so.down the road and realize it was the wrong one. I was starved too! Here is what I observed this morning at lunch: I wasn't greeted when I came in. I sat at the counter, next to a broom that someone had leaned up against the counter. It wasn't removed until I was almost finished with lunch. A trip-and-fall hazard, and probably a health code violation. A waitress not four feet from me spent all her time talking to two young girls at the counter, who were also past employees just visiting Sequim. She never acknowledged my existence. Neither did the four or five other waitresses who stopped to chat with the girls. Someone could have said, "Your waitress will be right with you." But no one did. But now I know everything I need to know now about hair, the best schedule for having a baby, and what to say when an older man hits on me. Someone did finally come to take my order. She didn't smile. She was all business. My food came up but it just sat under the lights. The waitress was still talking to the two past employees. Other on-the-clock servers walked by, including my own, while hot food sat in the window. No one took it out. Apparently, during busy times they have an "expeditor." This is one person who does nothing but run food to tables. ex·pe·dite /ekspdīt/ verb "make (an action or process) happen sooner or be accomplished more quickly." That sounds like a super idea, right? Well, it's not, because what happens is the current staff then believes they don't have to serve the food--for any reason. "That's someone else's job." And so the "expeditor" is having the opposite effect, and hot food sits in the window. I waited tables for 17 years. It's NEVER ok to be socializing on the clock while hot food is getting cold in the window--ESPECIALLY WHILE THE CUSTOMER IS SITTING RIGHT THERE. Sheesh. Even the manager came by to talk to the girls. Did she look at the window and see all the food sitting there? No. No, she did not. She didn't even look. The food here isn't bad, and the atmosphere is kinda nice, but the owner really needs to do something about the staff, including the manager. People here don't know what service is. PS: I love that the manager responded with a defense instead of saying, "You're right, servers should not be chatting when hot food is in the window," which is what I would have said, having been a restaurant manager for several years. read more

We tried to dine here two nights in a row. We arrived at 530 last night and it was a 45min wait so we left. Today we came at 445 and it was a 35min wait. The restaurant was 2/3 empty! First time diner, loved it!  Cool coy pond out front with many carved wooden bear statues.  In spite of being shorthanded, the servers were moving and the service was friendly and excellent!  I had the Reuben, super thick stack of juicy pastrami, no trouble eating the entire generous portion.  Comfort food done well! read more

I have been to many BBD's in my travels thru Ca. Or. and Wa. I have to say this one is the best. My favorite go to meal is their delicious waffle. The chef today really made me an A++++++ meal. We stopped in here when the place we were going to eat was closed. They are easy to get in and out of and have a fairly large parking lot . Love the lodge style atmosphere and carved bears everywhere, one was even peeking in the restraunt window. The staff were all freindly and you could tell they had regulars that came in, I enjoy seeing those interactions. It did not take away from our service at all. We were greeted and seated right away, we were not told the newspapers are the menu and from the front it is hard to tell. It took a few minutes for us figure it out. Steven (our server) took our drink orders right away and they arrived at the table quickly so did our food. The cheeseburger salad was great! What an awesome option for someone that has to be gluten free and likes burgers! It was very large and delicious. The regular bacon cheeseburger basket was just as scrumptious, fries were a little too salty. I used my check-in offer and got a free desert. It was hard to chose they all looked so amazing! I chose the peach cobler. The cobler was good probably would have been better heated up. Love the items in the shop and they are really reasonably priced. They have some locally crafted items as well as Black Bear items and some maps and things, really a good variety. read more

The two fluffy & hefty pancakes were generously stuffed with almonds, walnuts and Craisins. I had the fresh strawberries & Readywhip cream on the side. Lots of healthy options"Fit and focused under 500 cal" selections available too! One has to note that not all of the fruit offered is fresh. I.e., blue berries are frozen and some of the homemade fruit pies are baked with "canned fillings". This place has potential to be really good. We had never been there and didn't realize the newspaper on the table was the menu, so we sat in the booth for about 10 minutes until our server told us. The food was good, but I was let down by how salty it was. On Yelp, there was an option to "check in" and get a free pastry. Our server raved about the bear claws so I started to get really excited about it; but then they were sold out. First let me say that the décor and theme of the Black Bear Diner is adorable!! I loved all the bears inside and out! Second, the service was excellent. The server (Brittany?) did a terrific job and was very friendly and quick. The food was terrible. My husband had the breakfast of corned beef and eggs. The eggs were overdone, the toast was burnt and the corned beef was terribly dry. I had the chicken and waffle. The chicken had an odd taste and was incredibly thin. The waffle was tasty but the syrup had NO maple taste and tasted like sugar water. Overall, not a great experience and we would not return. read more

The reality is that this resturant has A LOT of work to do before I visit again. Our first visit was this year during the last day of the Lavendar festival. I expected it to be busy, and it was, but food quality should not suffer because of it. I want my food to take a few extra mins to arrive if it means it will be perfect. My husband and my mother in law were with me during this visit. We were seated at the counter. To quote my mother in law "You sure learn alot when you sit at the counter." Indeed you do!!! We tuned into a conversation at one point and they were discussing who needed to wear gloves and who did not! I believe that should be a DAY ONE, MINUTE ONE conversatiion! We really should have run at that point. Now, for the food. Average at best. Below average is more like it. The establishment is 'famous" for it's absurdly large portions (very helpful for an overweight country). They really need to concentrate on food quality rather than quantiy. The breakfast platter my mother in law ordered was exactly as described; eggs w/veggies and hashbrowns (a crazy stupid amount!!) There was no creative seasoning or anything. Nothing to make it any different than I can make in my own kitchen. (My cooking is much better!) My husbands sirloin french dip was even worse. It fell waaay below the menu's description. It was a sad, soggy french roll with underseasoned meat. (a surprisingly small amount) My husband was very disappointed. My bbq pork sandwich was just as disappointing as the other 2 dishes. I also had a cup of chili on the side. I (or anyone else!) should NEVER have to ask for their food to be hot. The top of the chili was warm but stone cold on the inside. When the server finally came over and asked if everything was ok I asked her to bring me a chili that was actually hot. She took the chili to the window and told them the problem. I heard alot of commotion about "MAKE IT HOT!! HOT, indeed!!! It came out so hot I could not even eat it. I was nearly done with my sandwich when I sent the chili back and by the time it arrived again, I did not even want it. Pricing was too high for the overall experience. This resturant is just as you arrive in Sequim. Please take this Yelpers advice, drive into town and see what else you can find. read more

First of all, I picked this place not knowing it was a chain. We were at the casino up the road and wanted to eat something different than the casino food so I Yelped and came up with this place. Reviews were kind of all over the place so we thought we'd give it a shot. Next time we'll stay at the casino! Service is weird, just plain weird! There were a whole bunch of workers wandering around, looking around and messing around, but not many of them were really doing much of anything. There was a manager there but she didn't do much of anything, just chatted with a couple of the servers. We sat at the counter where service is usually spot on but here, you get your server and that's it. Nobody else helps, nobody else even looks at you, just your server. They all walked by, they all saw our empty cups, they all saw our food in the window, they all looked the other way! They did a lot of talking among themselves though, just not with customers. Our server was nice and friendly as I'm sure the others were to their customers but I've never seen it where they all don't work as a team to keep customers happy quite like it was here. The food is edible and that's about it. Way, way too many fries to fill up the giant plates to make it look like your getting a huge amount. And they're not even that good, they're just standard restaurant fries. The omelets are big and full of whatever you order in them but I think they use egg beaters or something, not real eggs. As with the fries, the hashbrowns are way too big to fill up the giant plate. Now here's the kicker so pay attention... We visited on a Sunday at 2:00 in the afternoon and they were out of white bread! Not only were they out of white bread, they were out of the thick garlic bread for their Summer Special menu! So the only bread available was wheat, rye or sourdough. I was like "What? Are you kidding me". She said no, they were out of both! How in the world does a chain Denney's style restaurant run out of white bread? No white toast, no white sandwiches, no white dinner garlic bread, no white french toast... seriously?? We definitely won't be back to the Black Bear Diner in Sequim and I really doubt we'd stop at another one along the way... read more

After walking out of the Hwy 101 diner due to lack of service we walked into this place on New Year's Day. So crowded there was no parking in the lot - but we were seated relatively quickly and got to listen to music by this adorable older couple and look at all the bear paraphernalia while waiting. Once we were seated service was quick and food was straight forward and good - I got a club sandwich and my wife got a turkey sandwich - they were exactly as you would expect these items at a diner to be. We were in and out in an hour, which is exactly what we wanted, too, although I am sure we could have lingered a bit longer if we had wanted. read more
