I love the Olympic Peninsula in Washington--hands down my favorite place to be in the summer and an easy drive from where I lived on Bainbridge Island for more than a year. It was a tradition to stop at this joint just off the 101. With its quirky bear theme and massive menu serving up just about anything you could want and expect from a diner, this place has always delivered. On this occasion, I was traveling to Port Angeles for business and ordered the tri-tip sandwich with grilled peppers and mushrooms with cole slaw on the side. It was served with a cup of Au Jus, which made it easier to devour, which is exactly what I did. The sandwich was excellent although the cole slaw was bland and dry. My server was super friendly and I left full and reinvigorated to finish my long drive from SeaTac. (4 stars). read more

We were traveling with our dog and needed a place to eat lunch that could accommodate dogs. Thankfully we found the Black Bear Diner. Even though the weather was a bit damp, they set us up on the patio, which had umbrellas over the tables, and served us well. The server was very attentive and even brought out a water dish for our dog - nice touch. The menu was extensive and the four of us (2 adults and 2 teens) easily found something to eat. Food was ok. We had a variety of food ranging from the Steak, to the bbq and parmesan burgers. Daughter really enjoyed the BBQ burger, she would give that 5 stars. I am giving this a low review because of the service. We came in relatively early for dinner, so there were 2 other patrons in the diner, so a slow time. Our waitress seemed very annoyed to have to wait on us, the entire time. We actually we stumbled into one of those resturants where they are purposely rude. We haven't been to the Black Bear for over a year and thought we'd try it for breakfast. We ordered a meat lover's omelette and good ol' bacon and eggs. The portions were huge and the food was good, although the eggs weren't cooked as requested ( Asked that they be cooked medium to hard. In their defense, almost no one gets it right.) Food came out fairly quickly and the server was very good. A couple of negatives: The restaurant could have been cleaner. There were boxes on the front counter, and the floors needed vacuumed. Mind you this was at 7:45 AM on a Monday, and it wasn't busy. And there were a lot of flies. We were swatting them away from our heads and off our plates. We also noticed a plastic partition- maybe a sneeze guard- between booths that was smeared with,,,something greasy. Lastly, the person that seated us was clearly not in the mood for customers. It was as if she had something or somewhere else more important and this was taking up her time. Breakfast for two was about $41.00. Would we come back? Dunno. read more

Blackbear Diner in Sequim is one of our favorite restaurants in town. Given the stresses of Covid and hiring, they've pulled through with very few bumps. Every time we've eaten there, the wait staff has been simply fantastic! They smile and the few times an order wasn't perfect, they've always made it right. Last night, we ordered to-go meals and since we live about half an hour away, we don't get to go back if something is wrong. We got home and they forgot a few things...hey, it happens. I posted a comment on their website and left a message for the manager. True to form (GREAT SERVICE), the manager called me today and made it right. They still have good food and we will continue to support this local business. read more

We were there for breakfast Thursday, November 10, at around 10ish. Our first encounter was with the rude hostess. She took us back and said we could choose between a 2 person booth or a table for four. As I had recent knee surgery, I was looking at which would be more comfortable. After a couple of seconds, the hostess rudely snapped at me "hurry up and decide, I have other people waiting" She could have politely said that she had to get back up front, and we can go ahead and chose which every table we wanted. She didn't have to snap at me. I ordered a sweet tea which was on the menu. I was told that they didn't have it as it was a seasonal item. I can understand specials that are advertised on their placemats rotate in and out, but I don't understand why anything that is on their regular, printed menu would be a seasonal item. Disappointing. I ordered the chorizo burrito (they are normally very good) only to realize halfway through the meal that the burrito didn't have cheese as stated on the menu. By then, it was too late to send it back. Again, a disappointing dining experience. Our waitress (unfortunately, I didn't get her name), was very nice (as opposed to the hostess) and gave us a discount on the meal for my disappointing experience. read more

If you want to be overfed and bask in a ton of bear dad jokes, this is a place for you. It's kid friendly and the food was pretty yummy. Quite American and the portions are gigantic. I got something from the "lighter side" menu and still left feeling like a stuffed animal. Thankfully they label the calories on each dish so you know what you're getting into. There are a lot of complaints about the service here and although we had an amazing experience, I understand why. The host and bus staff were loudly talking to each other from across the room and were not very inviting and friendly. I can't speak for the other waitstaff, but we had a great time with our server Stephanie. She was funny, helpful and fast. She was a bit frank and didn't exactly follow "fine dining etiquette" but that's not what we were looking for, so her company was perfect. Let me start off by saying our server Julie was kickass! She's amazing. But... the food was IHOP quality just bigger portions but what did we except? It's a diner. But be aware of the kids who should be put on leashes. Folks let there badass kids run around and raise hell all around the restaurant and in the pond. Kids where using the paddle decorations to hit the koi in the pond, we're running around bear foot (ha) in the pond. The fact that this establishment has no standards drives me insane. Staff should make it well known that the pond is for VIEWING only, that your kids need to be under control and watched over at all times. But truly our bad for not realizing this place was right next to the Holiday Inn, so untamed little citizens are bound to be around. 10/10 won't be going back even though our server was amazing. read more

All of the lady's seamed very unhappy and dresses as though they had just gotten out of bed and went straight to the restaurant. They were all very unfriendly.the worst part of our experience was that when I used the lady's room , a young girl who I believe might have been the host as she was setting tables upon our arrival came out of one of the stalls and left without even washing her hands. The only thing that was good was the food but overall experience. Well we will not be returning. Good luck finding anything to eat here if you're vegetarian, vegan, or just wanting to make a healthier choice. "Lighter fare" simply doesn't exist here. I've been dragged here a few times by family members and I always struggle. This place is loaded with greasy egg-and-meat-heavy breakfasts, greasy meat-laden lunches, and greasy fish-or-meat-heavy dinners. Even their salads are completely smothered with meat and cheese. Not even a token veggie burger on the menu. I think all I was able to eat was a fruit cup and a side salad with balsamic vinaigrette. Come on, Black Bear Diner! Get with the times and offer at least ONE vegan meal option for those of us with allergies or trying to make a healthy or compassionate choice. I will say the decor here is kind of cute. Bears, bears, everywhere you look. There's even a mini gift shop with bear items you can purchase. It feels sort of like a cheesy, bear-themed Disneyland, but it knows it and flaunts it, so it's all good. I even bought a cute wooden bear figurine here once. Came here with a friend and his kid because it was right next to the Holiday Inn Express we were staying and were too hangry and tired to look elsewhere. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and cheap (weekend special prime rib with sides was gigantic and around $20). The service was super friendly. This is a big restaurant, so it was easy to socially distance. Be sure to try the home made berry cobbler (one if the best I have had). My first time in Sequim and I am staying at the Holiday Inn Express (shares a parking lot with Black Bear Diner). After traveling all day I did not care to venture out so I walked across the parking lot for dinner. And was not disappointed. Immediately upon entering I was warmly greeted and could see that the restaurant was very clean. The menu looks like a newspaper and has articles on local activities and 1959 trivia on the front and back. The dining selections are on the inside. Prices are very reasonable, especially given the portion sizes. This place has nice selection of all-day breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods which they classify as comfort food. I decided to go with their most popular dish... BIGFOOT Chicken Fried Steak. It comes with soup or house salad, freshly baked cornbread muffin, choice of seasonal veggies or Italian green beans and a choice of red-skinned mashed potatoes with country gravy, French fries, onion rings, OR baked potato. I went with the soup (veggie beef today) and the red-skinned mashed potatoes with country gravy. The food all arrived quickly, was hot, and prepared well (not over or under cooked). Taste was very good, and the portions are generous. I personally like my country gravy to be heavier with pepper and adjusted it accordingly, but there was nothing wrong with it as served. I understand that they need to cater to the masses and pepper can be added to a dish like this after served. It was a lot of food and I did not intend on eating all here, but I couldn't help myself. I did regret this a bit as they have a very nice selection of desserts (personal sized pies, cakes, bread pudding, cobblers, etc.) all of which can be served a la-mode (should be a criminal offense not to), and none of which did I indulge.....this time.....but I am only across the street so I will stop in again soon. The best part of dining here was the staff. I had direct interface with Julie, Kenzi, and David. They were all extremely friendly, helpful, and full of smiles. I could see into the kitchen and even the cooks greeted me with great smiles. This made my dining experience so much better than I anticipated. I love Black Bear Diner, and I absolutely love how many locations exist in the PNW. Good, comfort, diner food when you need it. You can never go wrong with the breakfasts here. They are large portions at not-so-hefty price, and they are delicious. I recently ventured off the normal grid and got a burger. While it wasn't my favorite (I mean, what do you expect from a diner burger), it was decent. My kiddo got a toddler-friendly portion of mac and cheese with fruit, and I was really excited that it was an appropriate portion for kids; most places give you WAY too much. Wait staff here was super friendly and accommodating to my messy toddler. Definitely adds to that homey feeling. You pay up front, which makes waiting decrease significantly. Most of the hotels in the area have deals for Black Bear. So make sure to take advantage of that - especially if you are across the parking lot at the Holiday Inn Express! read more

Service not good. We waited 20 minutes for anyone to even come to our table. Food was not good bacon cheese burger was mostly lettuce fries very salty. They forgot half of my order. Coleslaw was very dry. While we were eating they started vacuuming under our table even and made go out a different door than the front door even though they didn't close for another 15 minutes. read more

We arrived on the tail end of the lunch rush, so we had about a 5-10 minute wait to be seated. Our server was chatty, friendly in the way that this city girl can't seem to get used to. She was very efficient and our orders came out quickly & were piping hot. I had the (giant) bowl of chili. It was very tasty and served with a huge cornbread muffin that was equally tasty. Husband had the (also giant) chicken taco salad, which he really enjoyed. Bonus points for serving breakfast all day, sometimes you just need a stack of pancakes at 4 in the afternoon. After spending the afternoon roaming around Sequim we decided to check out the dinner offerings at The Black Bear Diner. We have been to Sequim many times before but this was our first time at the Black Bear and we were not disappointed, it was really good. Located on the east end of town, next door to the Holiday Inn Express just off of Hwy 101. From the outside, the restaurant was beautiful, all lit up like a mountain lodge, with plenty of parking. Once inside, it was obvious it's a popular place. It was busy but we were still greeted promptly be a couple of the friendly staff. We were seated within a couple minutes and our server Amanda introduced herself, took our drink order, and informed us that the whole menu was available, including breakfast. The menu was a regular smorgasbord of family favorites with a large selection of comfort foods. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, listed as their most popular menu item. It was served with choice of soup or salad and two sides. I went with the salad, it was amazing, fresh, and came with a giant corn muffin, fantastic. My better half got the Wild Alaskan Salmon, while our daughter ordered the Bacon Cheddar Burger. All three meals were on point, well prepared and exceeded our expectations. Our Server, Amanda was very pleasant, attentive and rounded out the whole experience, very well done. The Manager cashed us out and was very courteous and expressed his appreciation when I told him what a nice experience we had. We left full, so full in fact that we grabbed a couple of their amazing desserts to enjoy once we got home. We will definitely be going back!! read more
