7/24/23 Went this morning for breakfast. Wasn't busy. Service was friendly, but slow. I had the steak and eggs with pancakes. The steak, a 6 Oz med rare steak, was tough. Eggs, scrambled, were cooked perfectly. Pancakes were fine. There was an issue with flies buzzing around our table. Ended up taking our food to go. Probably be back. What amazing service! My sister and I just left and had Lilly as our waitress. She immediately greeted us with a smile. Super polite and professional. Excellent at customer service. She should have her own restaurant. Our drinks were always filled and she would check in on us yo see if we needed anything else. The food was great. About $20 for tri tip. I just left Black Bear diner and had a wonderful experience. The atmosphere was wonderful in every way From the initial greeting of Stephanie to the pleasant interactions I watched both between staff and between staff and customers. Even the chef was pleasant with co workers. Really bad food. Mashed potatoes were cold and had the consistency of snot. Shrimp was so overcooked that it was hard to recognize. Nice waitress but she was confused and disorganized. Some of these Black Bears are good, but not this one, not on this day. read more

Had a hard time leaving this review. All previous visit had been good until this one. My wife ordered the fish and hush puppies. I had the prime rib. The hush puppies were very dense and hard to eat. My prime rib was very fatty and no flavor (ask for medium rare and got well done, no pink). I had the mashed potatoes and they were cold. Will be awhile before trying again. read more

I used to eat here since i was a kid, and i came here after moving to LA just to see my family. it was very busy but they still seated us (a party of 6) as soon as we got here. everyone was very friendly, and Krista or Crista im not sure if it was a K or C i forgot, but she was our waitress and was amazing ! She was so attentive and patient even with the busy setting. The food came out fast and she always came to check on us, asking if we needed any more coffee or anything else in general. Krista had a bubbly attitude the entirety of our visit, saying goodbye to us as we went to pay before tending to other people. Even when the place was busy, it still was a welcoming environment. My son had a Bacon and Cheddar Burger also medium rare and he loved it too . I've been to this Location about 5 or 6 times already and have had a great meal and dining experience every single time . I'm not really sure where to write a review. I went to Black Bear website, it only let me answer multiple choice questions. My family of 5 +1 baby came in last Sunday, February 11. Our server's name was Lily. She was AMAZING . She was friendly, had a beautiful smile and rolled with all of our teasing perfectly! She was perfectly attentive but not annoyingly so. We also met the manager, I'm so sorry, I don't recall his name. But I must say, it seems as if he keeps his crew happy. Happy employees makes for happy customers. All the employees seemed happy to be there doing their job. I know lots of people say there are no good restaurants in Madera. I used to agree with them, but now we have our place! My kids loooove the black bear in Madera! They love hugging the bear and seeing the festive decorations. The manager and the whole wait staff are always so sweet. I took my daughter and two grandkids here for lunch today and my grand daughter and I ordered the chicken strip, my daughter ordered a bacon cheeseburger and my grandson ordered a pizza off the child's menu, the food was horrible, the chicken tasted like fish, the burger was soggy and the pizza made my grandson sick, I felt he got food poisoning. Black Bear Diner has been on my list for a while now and I had the opportunity to try out this restaurant with 15 co workers to test out how efficient this place is and see if they can handle big groups. I have to tell you they can. Seriously, we came here to celebrate a co workers birthday. We were seated immediately and we were all starving. They gave us newspaper menus and the menu has a lot to choose from!! Our waiter did not return until 15 minutes later, they took our drinks down and left for another 15 minutes. I as always was craving biscuits and gravy with sausage. Finally The waiter took our orders and I got the Southern Scramble which was delicious. I ask the server if the sausage was pork and he said yes. You can choose from regular or spicy. Another 20 minutes later we were served our food. The Southern Scramble was HUGE!!!! It came with potatoes that I selected over the hash browns, two huge biscuits with two sausage patties with omelet on top smothered in gravy. So delicious. I was a happy camper with my meal. Everything was yummy and I could not finish the plate. I would definitely recommend the Southern Scramble. The customer service was good. They even gave the birthday girl a free pie and sung her happy birthday too. The service was slow but serving 15 people among the rush hour I do not expect anything less. The Assistant Manager Jerry Rodriguez found them and brought them to us since you can drive without the keys. The food was great and also the personal help given by Jerry!!" I am so disappointed. I've always wanted to try this place. Got this sad tasteless fettuccine Alfredo and some soggy white bread with cheese on it that looks like it was toasted a few days ago. I absolutely love this place. The food is always killer (especially their steaks) but what made my experience so amazing, is the server Mercedes. She is a sweet soul with a listening ear. She makes time to converse with her guests and that goes a long way. I overheard her speaking with other guests and her consideration/empathy was so refreshing to hear from someone in the service industry. I like to go and sit over by the counter booths. It's close to the bathrooms quiet enough you can hear each other talk and service is good. You don't have to be waited to seat. I'm a travel RN and was looking for a local diner and I must say Black Bear Diner was delicious. My co worker and I couldn't believe how big the portions were and how good the food was. The service was also wonderful. The waitress went to each table to ensure everyone was okay and enjoyed their food. I told the front cashier how good the food was most importantly I said "idk who the chief is but I'll slap him because the food was TOOOOOOO GOOD". Who ever was working on 8/8/23 at around 6:00pm ish.... was F****** phenomenal!!!! I've worked in customer service forever and you can always tell who is faking being nice to just try and get tips. The customer service... 12/10. The food 12/10. I wish I lived here in Madera, CA cause I would be coming to this restaurant all the time.
