Black Bear used to be a place where you could get a good ol American meal with good size portions and consistent quality. I have returned to this particular restaurant a few times thinking the decreased food quality was a one off. Nope. I ordered a BLT today. With sourdough. Came on white bread with one droopy piece of a lettuce leaf and one half of a thinly sliced tomato on each side. It was dismal and disappointing and the service is also mediocre. The last few times I have been here the food has been sub par. Service is always decent, but for the price you pay, it's not worth it.

Received an old biscuit with mold. I've never had such bad experience at any Black Bear diner until now. I called the restaurant and all they said was that they would check the other biscuits. The manager kept mentioning that it may be avocado but that is impossible as my order came with two plain biscuits on the side. read more

Very nice. Staff is very friendly and personable First we were met with smiles and seated right away. Dilly was quick to get our beverage orders. It was homey in just the right way. We weren't seated too close to other families. That was nice. Dilly even asked if the table he was seating us was okay; I truly appreciated that. Then the sweet team members, Mercedes and Emily. Since I happened to be staying overnight at this hotel on a recent road trip, I decided to just walk on over and have dinner there. The food was good and the service was fine. Black Bear Diner is known for good food and generous portions. I ordered the Fish & Chips, which goes for $14.99. They gave me three large pieces of fish, a side of cole slaw and a large portion of fries. First off the restaurant is always hot and stuffy and employees r sweating and having to bring neck fans. I'm a regular since I'm in town for work so I stay at the hotel next door. I go in all the time to see Mercedes she is so sweet and attentive and makes sure my cup is always filled. We stopped here along the way to our destination as it's conveniently located off the freeway. We were immediately seated and greeted by our server. I started off with just a classic coffee because it's a must when going to any diner. I also appreciate when fresh squeezed orange juice is offered. I went with the Shasta scramble and you have the option to choose between toast, biscuit or pancakes. I opted for the pancakes as I tend to enjoy a combination of sweet and savory. My family and I came in for dinner when it wasn't too busy and we were quickly seated. Charity and Hailey helped us out. Both of them made sure we had everything we needed & kept coming over to check on our table. We ordered a variety of food and everything came out good. I ordered an omelette and those are always really good. My dad ordered the chicken fried steak dinner and it's A TON of food & always good. 4/15/23 Getting breakfast for tomorrow. Veggie egg white one key with ham added, country potatoes with it and cinnamon roll pancakes ordered for the sides. The worker was kind and said it would be ready soon. I went in to get it. Unfortunately, she wasn't really clear with the order. Hoping it's right. It was busy walking in! Really busy! The worker was very kind after a small wait. Repeated the order and I sat at the bar front of the restaurant and it was only a minute wait before a kind worker handed it over with good day wishes! Got the bear combination for 12.99 that came with 2 bacon, eggs and pancakes that were all solid and delicious with a good cup of coffee to go with it. I used to love Black Bear Diner. My wife and kid, not so much. I talked them into giving it one more chance and they were 100% correct. My kid ordered eggs Benedict and the hollandaise sauce was curdled. I ordered the "corned beef" hash, which I always have ordered, and the meat wasn't corned beef at all. Before work this morning, I placed an online order at this location to be picked up at 8:15 a.m. I ended up arriving a little early and so I headed to the door dash pick up area. When I arrived there was an older lady at the register who ignored me and went to tend to some tables. A young man who was very nice ended up trying to assist me and he let me know that they were still cooking my food. As soon as the older lady who had ignored me saw me talking to him she came over and asked him what he was doing then she asked for the name on the order. I gave her my name and then she said "here's your coffee," as if I wanted to stand there and hold an ice cold cup of coffee while waiting on my food. She then walked away and came back over to me and asked to see my online order receipt. I pulled it up and let her know that it was the same name that I had already given her and that I would not try to steal food from black bear diner. She then tried to clean her comment up and said "I never said you were but you have to look at the rest of the world," and then she walked away. I'm highly insulted because I would have no way of knowing the name on my order to have given it to her the first time she asked. Then she had the audacity to ask again, as if I came in to steal a take out order. Considering the fact that I am an African-American woman I consider the doubling down very prejudicial and I will not subject myself to prejudice when I'm spending my money. The nerve. Get it together Black Bear of Madera. We all aren't thieves. Follow up to Black Bear Diner: I left this review on google as well, and someone from your company asked me to send an e-mail. I did and received no response. Another follow up: I did speak to the owner of Black Bear Diner Madera and she was great with this. Not once did she doubt that I was telling the truth even though the employee has worked there for years. She spoke to the employee and the employee reached out and apologized for "prejudging" me. She said it will never happen again. Although I will not be back to this location, I would give the Fresno location a chance as it is owned by the same person. I have been pleased with the quality of most of the food I have ordered. When it gets later into the evening things seem to go a little south. Like how I like my steak - rare. It will come well done, and taste bland. Like it has been on a steam table. Veggies will go from crispy steamed to soggy water logged. Garlic toast will go from just right to dry and stale. Ordered a "3 egg" Denver omelette and "hashbrowns". Safe, easy choice in my opinion it's really hard to mess up something so simple. My 3 egg omelette looked like a one egg omelette the ham inside was burnt. I get that eggs are expensive but the plate I ordered was almost a $20 plate. My hashbrowns did not look like hashbrowns and were burnt to a crisp. It was underwhelming and quite disappointing. read more

The Tri-Tip Dip has conviction: unlike many diner French Dips, it's clear that the meat came off an actual haunch of cow or similar. Both the meat and the au jus have meaty flavor, which you can't always take for granted in this genre of sandwich. Get it with onion rings so you can enjoy about 6 giant rustic onion rings rather than being faced with a pile of ordinary French fries bigger than your head. (Remarkably, the sandwich itself is not the largest of its kind ever; it's a shock to discover a Black Bear menu item that I can finish in one meal, but I'm not complaining.) Servers at the moment are college students living the "well, at least it's an indoor job" dream, so they're pleasant and will fix mistakes, but it's not the efficiency of a long-time hash-slinger.
