Cider and wine
Dominique O.

A nice laid-back spot to catch up with friends over a refreshing drink. Service was quick and the atmosphere was friendly and fun. I would probably come back again if I'm in the area.

We have a good time here, especially with their selection of beers. We went on a sunny, warm day, and it was a perfect spot to relax. They offer lots selection of German beers on tap, and I recommend getting the large size!

Pretzel with German mustard

An Unexpected German Gem in Hayes Valley! On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, we were wandering through Hayes Valley and stumbled upon this wonderful beer garden on Octavia Street. Having never been before, we were in for a delightful surprise! The atmosphere is fantastic, with communal seating, a lively crowd, and a welcoming vibe that genuinely made us feel like we were in Germany. It's relaxed, comfortable, and the perfect place to gather with friends or simply enjoy a beautiful afternoon. We enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine (not exactly traditional beer garden fare!), but next time we'll definitely try some of the beers. They also offer food, and the prices are refreshingly reasonable for San Francisco. What makes this place special is its communal spirit and the feeling that everyone is there to relax and enjoy themselves. What an unexpected German surprise! We absolutely loved discovering this spot and will definitely be back for more good times, great atmosphere, and, next time, some beer. Prost!

Plants, people

This place has it all, excellent beer, a great atmosphere, and simple yet great food. The guy working the front Dylan is very nice and relaxed. Great place to go with friends and family m.

Pork belly sliders, currywurst with fries

You order from the counter, and beers are served right away. They will bring your food to your table :) there are outdoor seatings and "indoor" seatings (the tent) The pork belly sliders were okay, wish they have more seasoning or flavor to the pork. Currywurst was yummy, wish it comes with a little more fries tho.

Lovely place to grab a beer with friends on a nice day! Super centrally located right on the Patricia Green in Hayes. Pitchers here at the outdoor tables was a great vibe. It gets busy though. The pretzels we got were mid - would recommmend more for drinks than food.

Garlic parm fries
Carissa D.

Good vibes, GREAT food. Everything looks fresh, crunchy and tastes fantastic (especially garlic parm fries). It was a rare sunny day, but maybe keep some umbrellas on standby. I'd like to see more non-alcoholic options but those may not fit the rest of the options available. Overall, I'd enjoy coming back. Outside of my personal preferences, its a perfect spot to catch up and spend time being social or read a good book

Fries ($7)
Risa H.

Nice spot outdoors to grab a few beers and bites - they have games available to play, but a lot of the pieces are missing. They open at 4PM but when we went they made us wait until 4:15PM to enter, which was a bit annoying. The food here is sub-par - I had the deviled eggs ($6) and the fries ($7). Came here in the winter but I'm sure it's much nicer and less freezing in the summer!

"Pork shoulder" sandwich

Came here for a friend's birthday and had a great time. They have long picnic tables that are perfect for large groups. They also have a decent selection of beer that isn't just German beer. The reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is because I ordered the pork shoulder sandwich and was served this. I feel like a description is necessary if this is what is going to be served.

the vibes here are immaculate! especially when there's good weather. the perfect casual happy hour spot with yummy bites and good drinks. what more do you need?

This little Biergarten in Hayes is behind a fenced area with lush green, inside you'll find a fun outdoor space to grab a solid pint and catch up with friends or colleagues- I noticed there were a lot of folks doing a work happy hour there. They actually have a large cupboard? cabinet? With some games and group activities which is really nice. I like how they have beers and lots of good shareable foods. It's a great spot for grabbing a drink/app before dinner too. The line was fairly long, but it's nice they serve drinks right up front to take to your seat. If it's busy, keep in mind, it took a second to get food. We got a pretzel with beer cheese, but the beer cheese isn't like an American bright yellow beer cheese. It's chunky and white, I still liked it with the pretzel with the mustard too. I got a Hefeweizen, yeasty wheat beer. It was light and sooo easy to drink. I have to come back when it's a hot SF day because an outdoor patio and cold beer sounds sooo good!

Pretzel
Sallem A.

I stopped by here on a sunny Sunday afternoon and left happy that it did. I was greeted by their friendly staff that offered me to sample any of the beers/ciders. I decided on the fort point cider and a soft pretzel. I was happy with the pretzel and would recommend it to anyone. It was chewy, buttery and perfectly salted. It also came with a side of mustard and a seasoned Bavarian cheese spread. The cider was light and crisp and paired perfectly with the pretzel. Snagging a bench wasn't difficult and they had nice music playing in the background. I'll definitely be back!

Erich L.

Simple beer garden and good place for a snack or a drink. They make the authentic Glühwein (mulled wine) that's just like Germany. Excellent! A lot of things were sold out but they had the paulaner Pilsner and pretzels. The pretzel came out lopsided but it was good and that's a sign that it was hand made. Give this place a try and just go to hang out everything is outdoors.

The staff are super friendly, the portions are good, and they have a great selection of imported beers. The salads have also been good and fresh. The rest of the food is either overly sour or just plain bland, the noodles were mushy. I really wish the schnitzel had more flavor and a crispy coating because mine was soft and unseasoned. My biggest issue is serving these imported beers in warm glasses. The beer warms up almost immediately, loses that crisp taste, and becomes less enjoyable with every sip. With a beer list this good, the glass should never take away from it.

They offer reservations, but I don't think they're necessary unless you're going with a larger party. We made a reservation for Saturday around 6 PM, but the restaurant was empty when we arrived. The space is small but very cozy. I imagine once it's darker outside that the warm, intimate atmosphere would make it a great date spot. We got the goulash and sausages. The goulash is more stew-like than soup-like. It was tasty and straightforward, though I was expecting a bit more depth from the paprika. The sausages were 10/10. We tried the Hungarian Sweet and German Spice, and I highly recommend the latter if you're looking for one that packs a punch. The plate comes with a few gherkins, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes with gravy, which made for a well-rounded mix of flavors and textures.

The food is still as delicious as ever, and the staff is more than happy to guide you through their extensive menu to find the perfect dish that suits your taste buds. One of the standout features of The Speisekammer is its large screen TVs, making it an ideal spot to watch the World Cup soccer matches. The cocktails are equally impressive, expertly crafted and bursting with flavor. During the fall, The Speisekammer truly comes alive with Oktoberfest celebrations. They throw an extravagant German party that is unlike any other in the East Bay. The outdoor patio is a great place to enjoy the beautiful weather and socialize with friends. I highly recommend The Speisekammer for anyone looking for a fun and delicious German dining experience. I plan to return soon to catch some soccer matches with friends and soak in the lively atmosphere.

We ordered right away because the restaurant was busy, yet our food took over an hour to arrive. We started with a couple of pretzels, which seemed noticeably smaller than I remembered, although I could be mistaken. For my main, I had the Jägerschnitzel, which was excellent as usual. The food here really is great, with the kind of hearty, comforting German food that keeps you coming back. Unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed the food. When our entrees arrived, the server dropped them off and walked away before we could even say anything. We had no silverware. After flagging someone down, we were brought silverware that was nearly placed directly on our dirty table. Worse, when we looked closer, the silverware was dirty. I went inside, politely asked for clean silverware, and mentioned that we were getting frustrated with how things were being handled. The response was shocking. Instead of apologizing or simply bringing us clean silverware, the staff member blew up at me, explaining that she had come in on her day off, that they were short-staffed, and that if I had a problem, I should take it up with management. She then told me there were no managers working that day. I completely understand that restaurants get busy, staffing can be difficult, and mistakes happen. I have patience for all of that. What I don't understand is taking that frustration out on customers who are making a reasonable request. All she had to say was, "Sorry about that, let me get you clean silverware." I also witnessed similar interactions with other tables, and the table behind us was visibly upset and complaining as well. I've always enjoyed Speisekammer and have never had an experience like this before. The food is still great, but the service and the incredibly unprofessional way this situation was handled left a really bad taste in my mouth. It's disappointing when a restaurant you genuinely like delivers an experience that makes you question whether you want to return. Two stars because the food deserves better, but the service absolutely needs to improve.

Schroeder's has a storied history -- it was originally founded in 1893 and survived the pandemic (and the neighborhood's subsequent WFH emptiness after that) but I can't tell what to make of it these days. Nearly every seat at the long communal biergarten-esque tables is taken on a weekday evening, so be sure to make a reservation if you're a large party coming during dinnertime. It gets loud in here, so know that you won't be able to hear your dining companions -- if you're stopping by on a weekday, this could be a pro or a con, depending on how much you like your coworkers. Most of the German food in San Francisco is stereotypically Bavarian, though I suppose this is actually on brand for Schroeder's being that it's a beer hall. Expect schnitzel. Lots of schnitzel. And bratwurst and sauerkraut, of course. (Skip the pretzel though. It tasted kinda stale, which was disappointing for $14.) The food is heavy, so you'll have leftovers for tomorrow, which makes the price of the meal worth it, right? The highlight of the meal was probably seeing that they also have classic German beers like Weihenstephaner on tap. Prost!
