Oktoberfest vibes here at this German restaurant. Pretzels, Bier, communal picnic tables and the good old outdoors - just bring your friends and it has the makings for a casual, no fuss meet up. I love this part of town next to Patricia's Green. Its got a very good feel to it. Many great restaurants and a cluster of German places too: Biergarten, Hahdough, and Suppenkuche. If you are with a big, big group there is nothing I like more than to come to a place like this. Seating problems and ordering problems and all these problems that come along with big indecisive groups are avoided when coming to a place like this. And in the summer there is nothing nicer than being outdoors. German food is generally no fuss too. Have a currywurst along with your beer and give it a try. German sausage is generally much better quality than American mystery meat. read more

You order from the counter, and beers are served right away. They will bring your food to your table :) there are outdoor seatings and "indoor" seatings (the tent) The pork belly sliders were okay, wish they have more seasoning or flavor to the pork. Currywurst was yummy, wish it comes with a little more fries tho. read more

Lovely place to grab a beer with friends on a nice day! Super centrally located right on the Patricia Green in Hayes. Pitchers here at the outdoor tables was a great vibe. It gets busy though. The pretzels we got were mid - would recommmend more for drinks than food. read more

Good vibes, GREAT food. Everything looks fresh, crunchy and tastes fantastic (especially garlic parm fries). It was a rare sunny day, but maybe keep some umbrellas on standby. I'd like to see more non-alcoholic options but those may not fit the rest of the options available. Overall, I'd enjoy coming back. Nice spot outdoors to grab a few beers and bites - they have games available to play, but a lot of the pieces are missing. They open at 4PM but when we went they made us wait until 4:15PM to enter, which was a bit annoying. The food here is sub-par - I had the deviled eggs ($6) and the fries ($7). Came here in the winter but I'm sure it's much nicer and less freezing in the summer! read more

Very welcoming and Social ambiance. Good to connect with friends. Tried a couple of beers, bratwurst and curry wurst - all very good. The one call out is that both the wurst did not come with any bun (which is a first for me ) - but nonetheless they were quite good. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday and had a great time. They have long picnic tables that are perfect for large groups. They also have a decent selection of beer that isn't just German beer. The reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is because I ordered the pork shoulder sandwich and was served this. I feel like a description is necessary if this is what is going to be served. read more

This little Biergarten in Hayes is behind a fenced area with lush green, inside you'll find a fun outdoor space to grab a solid pint and catch up with friends or colleagues- I noticed there were a lot of folks doing a work happy hour there. They actually have a large cupboard? cabinet? With some games and group activities which is really nice. I like how they have beers and lots of good shareable foods. It's a great spot for grabbing a drink/app before dinner too. The line was fairly long, but it's nice they serve drinks right up front to take to your seat. If it's busy, keep in mind, it took a second to get food. We got a pretzel with beer cheese, but the beer cheese isn't like an American bright yellow beer cheese. It's chunky and white, I still liked it with the pretzel with the mustard too. I got a Hefeweizen, yeasty wheat beer. It was light and sooo easy to drink. I have to come back when it's a hot SF day because an outdoor patio and cold beer sounds sooo good! read more

This place is a real find, we were there on a sunny warm day and this was the perfect spot. They have an extensive selection of German beers on tap, get the large size. Both the vegan and regular brats are good and come on a bun with kraut and mustard unless you ask for something different. There are lots of tables and friendly people. The only complaint is it's necessary to go through the line again to get more beer. read more

I stopped by here on a sunny Sunday afternoon and left happy that it did. I was greeted by their friendly staff that offered me to sample any of the beers/ciders. I decided on the fort point cider and a soft pretzel. I was happy with the pretzel and would recommend it to anyone. It was chewy, buttery and perfectly salted. It also came with a side of mustard and a seasoned Bavarian cheese spread. The cider was light and crisp and paired perfectly with the pretzel. Snagging a bench wasn't difficult and they had nice music playing in the background. I'll definitely be back! read more

Simple beer garden and good place for a snack or a drink. They make the authentic Glühwein (mulled wine) that's just like Germany. Excellent! A lot of things were sold out but they had the paulaner Pilsner and pretzels. The pretzel came out lopsided but it was good and that's a sign that it was hand made. Give this place a try and just go to hang out everything is outdoors. read more

Out and about with the most handsome date and we hear reggae. Surprise surprise, it's a live DJ at Biergarten! This oasis not only helped ease the tension of a date, but the nostalgia from the 90's throw backs kept us in a good mood as we got to know each other. I love red ales so the Westfalia was definitely the ticket. Super smooth and dry making this pick an easy drink. All in all, I love this place and will be back again. I've walked by Biergarten dozens of times and finally came to check it out while celebrating a friend's birthday pre-game. Located in Hayes Valley, Biergarten features an expansive outdoor patio offering German inspired food and beer. Aesthetically and atmospherically, it's actually a really lovely spot for a warm day. I can't comment on too much, as I only stayed for about an hour and only had a beer, but during that one hour, every experience was positive. There's a window where you can line up to order your beer and I opted for the seasonal Oktoberfest. It was well balanced, not too malty nor too hoppy and I did enjoy sipping on it. There was a live DJ which added to the ambiance as well. For just a casual, chill hangout, the vibes were on point. Since it's an outdoor space, it's also dog friendly so we were able to bring our pup wut hus, who had a great time just hanging out with the group. There was also a water bowl available at the entrance so our pup didn't go thirsty either. read more

Came here for a happy hour and it was cool to have so much outdoor space! It was incredibly cold though and windy, so it wasn't the most comfortable experience. There were a few heat lamps that kept us warm though. Good: - I was a huge fan of the pretzel dumplings - super tasty, maybe a little salty, but it was a super unique dish - 5/5 - The mushroom sliders were tasty as well but not my fave - 3/5 Bad: - Too cold outside! Most of the time, the weather in San Francisco plays nice and it's pleasant to be outside. For some reason, Biergarten feels like it's in a slight wind tunnel so there's always a cold breeze coming through. I appreciate the opportunity to be out in the sun though as it pairs perfectly with a beer! They have a large area set up with many bench style tables and seats. The offer a variety of German beers that are all good, but they are pricey! They also offer some food items like pretzels and sausages. I've come here a few times and have always felt like its a pleasant environment to spend time and hang out in. read more

Came by a few times with work mates for team building and after work happy hours. I enjoyed the beers, pretzels and the bratwurst. Service was fast, friendly and ambiance is nice when the weather is good as it's outside. Can't speak about the prices as someone else picked up the tab on those occasions. I will update if I come with friends in the future. read more

I tried to invite a large group of friends to this spot for drinks on a Friday night. We arrived at 8:20 PM, but unfortunately, we were turned away, even though the place is advertised as open until 9 PM. I can understand if the kitchen closes at 8, but it was surprising that they wouldn't even serve drinks--especially when they're promoting Oktoberfest! If they stop serving at 8, why not simply state that the closing time is 8 instead of 9? It's a bit misleading, and I would appreciate clarification on this. I'd love to be corrected if they actually close at 8, but I assume they don't. Lesson learned: get there early! read more

This place is perfect for casual drinks, especially with a large group. We showed up as a party of 9 on a Sunday afternoon and were able to immediately grab a picnic table on Biergarten's patio. Their entire seating setup is outdoors (so your visit will largely depend on the weather) but it was ideal for us, with its laid back, dog-friendly vibe. We ordered at the window with a few friendly staff members. The drinks are given to you right away, along with a number to take back to your table, so that they know where to bring out the food. I'm not a big beer drinker but luckily they had a few wines, so I got the Zweigelt (red wine) - very good! I also ordered a Pretzel with Obatzda (a creamy mix of Bavarian cheeses). The Pretzels here are fantastic and I highly recommend adding the Obatzda - such a great combo! My friends all enjoyed their massive beers, as well as the Bratwurst, Currywurst, Potato Salad, and Deviled Eggs. Would absolutely return! read more

Great hidden spot in Hayes Valley to grab a big glass of beer on a nice SF day. Definitely a go to spot as it gets warmer Food & Drink 4/5: Hefeweizen 4.5/5: Solid beer made better by the great atmosphere and chill vibe of the outdoor space Bratwurst 3.5/5: Good bratwurst with even better sauerkraut on the side. They serve it without a bun which could be off putting to some but was a good portion. The only thing was that it was a bit pricey and not sure it is of optimal value. Ambiance 4/5: Simple picnic like tables are lined all around the outdoor areas with the entire setup being outdoors. Very dependent on having good weather but really enjoyed the space. They have seating that can accommodate big groups. read more

I'll start with the negatives first because that's what's important. The servers at this otherwise wonderful place are bitter and resentful. Their way of service has always been less hospitable than any other business in the Hayes Valley area. I understand that this is a German Biergarten which gives them the right to behave like Germans but even Berliners are not as rude and apathetic as the servers here. Bro-y and competitive, it's no wonder no women servers work here. I'm a regular here but to share a specific experience, I'd speak of a recent one where I sat there sipping my beer with a friend while there was a birthday party crew of about 20 people having a nice time. At one point, they wanted to do a toast but the music was too loud. So one of them turned it down for a minute so the birthday person could do a brief speech. Might have been 20 seconds since and one of the servers came over and yelled at him for touch the volume. I get it, he may have crossed a limit by doing it himself but the way the server treated him and the entire crew was shameful and cruel. There have been other times when they've treated their customers terribly but this one really threw me off. That said, they serve amazing fresh beer and their burger and bratwursts are to die for. The ambiance is that of a biergarten. Lots of Hayes Valley sun. Their clientele are beer lovers who are friendly and chill. I've had countless conversations here with folks sharing our table. Overall a great vibe if you don't annoy a member of their staff. read more

Biergarten has such a fun, casual atmosphere for afternoon drinks. Their German inspired menu, as well as their beers are not the best I've ever had, but definitely a solid option. The outdoor space is incredibly charming, with little twinkle lights and a large space filled with picnic tables. Keep in mind, the entire area is outdoor so you have to make sure you go when the weather is nice. It's the perfect place to gather with big groups of friends, or even host a small event. Last time I was there, my friends and I planned a board game night, where we all brought our own games and were able to play for hours. Great casual time for after work drinks in Hayes! read more

This spot can be fun if you're looking for an outdoor beer garden that can accommodate large groups and is dog friendly. But other than the lively atmosphere, my friends and I (a group of 7) unanimously agreed that Biergarten is way too overpriced and overrated for mediocre beer and food. For instance, if you ordered a pretzel and then want to add some cheese dip to pair with it, be prepared to pay an extra $7 for a tiny 1oz paper souffle container of Obatzda (Bavarian cheese)! The beer selection is just okay because there aren't that many options available. With all the other beer gardens and breweries in the city, I don't see a reason to come back to Biergarten. read more

Stumbled on this place not knowing what it was. I was pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere on the night I was there was a step above what you'd expect from a dive bar. Definitely a cool place to go and just hang out over some food and bear. I'm a huge Radler fan and theirs is so good! It was light, refreshing, and very subtle notes of sweetness. I also had the Pretzel. Listen... this was the softest pretzel I've ever had lol It was so good. I wish it had been a bit salted though. Maybe they had that option and I just didn't see it. My friends and I came by here on a weeknight after dinner for a quick and chill drink. It's situated along Patricia's Green in Hayes Valley, which is one of the cutest neighborhoods in San Francisco. The space is outdoors lit by string lights filled with picnic benches. We just grabbed some beer, which is a bit on the pricier end. Even though we already ate, we also tried the Currywurst ($12). We tried to get a bottle of rose but they didn't have any cold ones so we opted for beer instead. They also didn't have fries so we ordered currywurst with fried potatoes. It all started when I came in this location to buy a pretzel because I was shopping next door at Macy's. She told me to download the Wetzel app and after the first purchase, I will be able to redeem my coupon for a free pretzel. I did download the Wetzel app & she gave me the coupon. Today, I went to redeem my coupon for the free pretzel. She first said I had to redeem it within a week and I told her that it doesn't state that on the coupon (no expiration date). Then she said the free pretzel coupon is loaded in the app which it wasn't. Next she didn't want to give me one at all. I asked for her to call her manager. She did and her manager told her to give me a pretzel. I asked for the jalapeño one and I paid for the cheese dipping. When I got in my car & checked the pretzel, it was a plain one. So I had to drive around to go back inside to ask her why she gave me a plain one if I asked her for the jalapeño one. She responded that's the free one with an attitude. I asked her why didn't she tell me that when I asked her for the jalapeño one. No response from her. By then I was pretty upset to be treated rudely, wasting time driving back, and false advertisement (see attached picture) to persuade customers to download & buy the first purchase. I called her store to ask for the manager. She hanged up on me when I asked for her name and to speak to her manager again. When I called this # (415) 658-7227 multiple times, she didn't pick up. I luckily got a printed receipt and noticed that her name was on it. Nicole R. After all that trouble, to top it off, the original pretzel I received was burnt and tasted stale. I'm writing this review because it's more than just getting a free pretzel, it's about being treated with respect and kindness. I can choose which stores to spend my money and this store will lose a customer. Also, I don't like how I was lied to about downloading the Wetzel app and the unpleasant and stressful ordeal I experienced. The coupon for the free pretzel is very misleading. It should state the expiration date and what kind of pretzel so people are aware of the conditions. I highly DO NOT recommend this Wetzel Pretzel store location on 170 O'Farrell Street, San Francisco next to Macy's.
