The beer is totally fine but went on Saturday, 27 and there was a "dj" there that was playing music at an unbearably loud level. So much so that people were avoiding sitting in half the seats in the space, close for where his speakers were. No one could have a conversation and it was truly painful. Ended up asking random stranger if we could cram next to them bc we had already ordered beers. It was very odd that this was happening, hasn't happened to us here before. A super chill spot to enjoy a beer with friends! The food is pretty good, but it is on the more expensive side and you might have to order two bratwursts to be full. For that reason, my partner and I usually go eat dinner somewhere else in Hayes and stop here for drinks post-dinner. You can't beat their beer prices! But it's also undeniable that the sauerkraut and bratwurst do pair well with the beer, so definitely try it if you haven't had that combination before! The menus on Yelp are definitely old menus or at the very least lunch menus. When we went, there weren't that many food options at all--not sure if this is a post-COVID thing or what. It's a cute outdoor area with string lights and ample seating. It can get a bit chilly, so make sure you bring a jacket. Also I'd probably wear shoes because last time we were here there were a lot of rats roaming around (somewhat understandably since it's outside), but it was pretty gross (one patron actually screamed haha). From what I could tell, it seemed like most of the rats are in the ground cover against the wall (same wall as where you purchase the beer)--so maybe avoid those tables, and you'll be a-ok! Additionally, when we ordered we weren't familiar with German beers. So we asked if there was anything like a blonde ale. The cashier just said, "no" without offering any recommendations. So we just kinda guessed and asked for what was most familiar, some Fort Point beer, the cashier then told us that was probably the closest to what we wanted and that it actually was quite similar or at the least the closest to a blonde ale. Biergarten is back from the dead! My boyfriend and I feared it's closure during the pandemic; it was a graveyard whenever we walked by for months, but then one day we saw it was alive and well! It's a great place to meet up with some friends to drink beer and/or wine al fresco. They have many tables but it doesn't seem as packed anymore, so get there early if you want to snag a seat! They've got heaters and hot mulled wine to help keep you warm during these colder months. Most people are there for the beer, but if you want some food, the options here are limited though you can surprisingly find something suitable for a variety of diets. I'm gluten free and don't eat dairy or eggs and even I was able to get a tasty meal of sausage and salad that that kept me satiated. I wish they had some gluten free beer options though! read more

One of my favorite spots in the city for beer for sure! Even in the pre-pandemic times! But especially in the pandemic times because of the all-outdoor space! And I don't even like German beers that much! Biergarten is super charming! Spotted some changes tonight since I last went a few months ago: 1) a sign by the gate!; and importantly 2) Heat lamps!!! The fog and cold have been rolling in for at least the last week, and the evenings have gotten cold. In the past, they sometimes had blankets but those weren't always on offer, and that was years ago. The heat lamps are a game changer! Doesn't seem like the liter is really an option anymore. I think I still see some of the liter steins but for the most part they default to the half liter. WHY?!?! Though the liter in the past cost the same as two half liters, and though the giant stein through which I could fit my entire hand through the handle was fun as hell, my last quarter stein of beer wasn't too pleasant as it was no longer at the good cold beer temperature. So I guess it really doesn't matter except for nostalgia that they're mainly doing half liters now. The pretzels are always good. I got the deviled eggs a few weeks ago and that was delicious. And I guess they are now doing charcuterie and cheese plates too! Fancy! I guess $12-13 for a half liter of beer is pretty pricey as I just looked up liter to pint conversion. Long gone are the dive bars and beergardens of yore. In their stead lie establishments such as Biergarten Hayes Valley! Pretty good and overpriced... Let me explain. I enjoy this place. The service was friendly and prompt. I got the burger with arugula Swiss and deli mustard, for $8, and a liter of German style beer for $20. That's right, each ounce of this beer cost me approximately $0.59. *sips slowly* Aaahhhh... The burger was a slider. There's no way around it. My friend got a bratwurst which he described as a Costco hot dog in a sourdough bun that was toasted on the outside only, which was $11. I anticipate his review will yield one star if he doesn't pass out from hunger before posting it. I personally am having a friend pick up food for me so that I survive a bar crawl tonight. Overall, delicious experience for me, but the prices reflect a level of inflation we shouldn't hit for another 27 years. Prost! read more

If I could give this place 10 stars I would! I had my birthday party here a couple of weeks ago, and Mandee, Heictor, Nick, and their team made it a really special day for me. First, we weren't sure if it was going to rain, but it was a little chilly so they set up tents and heaters for us. They also said if it rained we could move our party to suppenkuche if the weather was too bad. I loved that they gave me the two options, but luckily it was sunny and I got to spend my birthday outside! Sometimes you find gems of places where you least expect it. And I don't mean location wise, but just randomly. Places that you never would've thought to visit had it not been for a series of events where sustenance was not on your list and you were essentially just along for the ride. And boy was I glad I was along for this one as it far exceeded my expectations and offered some downright "home-y" and local offerings. Let's take a bite into, Biergarten. The Place (5 out of 5) - Now, a lot of Yelpers and restaurant reviewers and the like will often think of only giving their top marks/scores to a place for their fancy buildings, high-end decor, gold place settings, great views, etc; however, what a lot of folks forget to capture is the vibe it puts off and this is the reason I'm giving Biergarten a 5 in this category. The vibe. Biergarten is located in the Hayes Valley neighborhood in San Francisco. For those that are unaware, the Hayes Valley neighborhood in SF can almost be looked at as an affluent location. It's quite known for its couture shops, Victorian houses, quality restaurants, and trendy nightspots. Biergarten, however, is quite literally an outdoor space located in the heart of a shopping area whose "buildings" are shipping containers with cutouts in them and picnic tables spread throughout for the patrons to sit at in a communal style setup. You may think, "well, what's so special about that?" and that's my point, nothing! It's the vibe that this place manifests and nurtures. The place gives you a sense of community and belonging, it's a great place to hang out and quite literally have a beer in the "garden" amongst friends and good company. Dogs are welcome here and it's not uncommon for you to make new acquaintances with some awesome four-legged friends. I came here, essentially, after the work day and it was just a great vibe to be a part of and a great way to wind down after putting in a long day. The Service (3 out of 5) - Unfortunately, this is where I felt Biergarten lacked if I had to point anything out. With the vibe that the entire setting puts off, you'd imagine and hope that the folks providing the service to you would be equally welcoming and this is where it fell short. The person, essentially, tending bar and taking food orders was not the most friendliest and, in a way, seemed a bit condescending and just off-putting. I hate to say it, but they almost gave the vibe of not at all being interested in taking our order for whatever reason, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. We asked about the beers and they didn't seem at all interested in selling the product or even giving recommendations. Again, it was just the viibe of, "please just order quickly so I can be done with helping you". I'm hoping to just chalk it up to them having a bad day, but bummer overall. The Food (4 out of 5) - Right off the bat, Biergarten is exactly that...a beer garden. It's a place meant for you to order a local beer, sit down, and enjoy it with great company. So. let's get that out of the way, the beers were tasty and, I'm assuming, rotates based on season, release, etc. I don't quite remember the beer I got; however, it was delicious, refreshing, and I can imagine you can't go wrong with whatever beer you happen to choose. That said, the food they offer is quite delicious so I would definitely encourage you to order some as well! There isn't a formal restaurant or anything, it's quite literally a chef with their outdoor setup just whipping up some good eats behind one of the shipping containers! I ordered the burger which is served on a pretzel bun with alpine cheese. Now, I will be the first to admit I am not a huge fan of pretzel buns because the ones I've had before at different places were quite traumatizing. Hard, no flavor, difficult to bite into and chew, etc. The burger at Biergarten was quite the opposite and I was pleasantly surprised! The pretzel bun was incredibly soft, the burger patty was incredibly flavorful and the alpine cheese offered a great contrast to cut through the other profiles. The greens provided some needed freshness and all in all I savored every bite of that burger. HIGHLY recommend it! I also ordered the potato soup, which was quite creamy and delicious and my friend ordered the currywurst which was another surprise of the day. Traditional German wurst, but with a curry flavor to it; it was amazingly delicious as well; however the star of the day was definitely the burger. I probably could've ordered another one and would have completely accepted my guilt in doing so; it was that good. Overall (4 out of 5) - Like I said before, come to Biergarten for the vibe. If, at the end of your day, you're just looking for a place to sit down, enjoy a beer, take the dog out for a walk, etc Biergarten should definitely be on your list of destinations to drop by and order some food while you're at it. There was a time when I lived in Hayes Valley. My landlord, who lived on Upper Polk, had bought a condo on Page Street and when I informed her that I'd be moving out she said "I was hoping that neighborhood would be better by now. That was supposed to be my retirement home". That was in the late 1980's, when a freeway ran right through the neighborhood and hookers solicited business beneath that freeway, at least on Page Street. That landlord may be long gone but her dream of an improved Hayes Valley has arrived. What a change 30 years makes. Though there's a million booze and food choices lining Hayes Street, Biergarten sits off Patricia's Green, hidden amongst the shipping containers offering coffee, juice, and ice cream. Its popularity makes clear that it's no secret, but unless you're looking for it it'd be easy to miss. There's nothing here to go crazy over but the appeal of casual al fresco dining and drinking (especially in the heat of late) is attractive. Having hit Berlin at the beginning of winter, when their biergartens had mostly moved indoors, Biergarten stood in as a worthy surrogate. I sampled only beer, a warm pretzel, and potato salad ($6) and feel confident in reporting that Biergarten will fill your gut without raiding your savings. It inspired my partner, with his 1/2 pint beer, to look around at the full pints and offer "I'd like to come back here again" (no doubt for more beer). With the picnic tables pretty full my 2-person party did little to skew the average patron age at Biergarten which otherwise skews young. Still, nobody looked askance at those of us who remember this area from a time that pre-dates their birth certificate. Despite the crowd, Biergarten proved to be good for all ages and, though I saw a dog there I notice that their web site says "no pets". That right there might be the worst thing about the place. First off, Hayes Valley is known for being a little on the pricier end of San Francisco neighborhoods. Lots of good restaurants and bars, classy dining spots and overall upscale-suburban/middle-class consumer friendly. First things first, it's a great spot. Casual outdoor patio eatery, classic German beer garden. I came during a sunny weeknight after people got out of work and there were a lot of people there -- somehow beat the line and was able to still snag a spot cozied up to other people. Their menu features German dogs, pickled foods, pretzels, cheeses, meats and veggies... Seems heavy? I went for their Mushroom Portobello Sliders and I think they were about the GREATEST THINGS I HAVE EVER HAD. Warm soft golden crisp brioche bun, fresh and generous amount of arugula for a good bite, goat cheese, hefty tomato and one damn tasty thick portobello mushroom in between. I've had my fair share of mushroom sliders/burgers in the past but nothing beat how tasty these things were. Plus, their pints/glasses of beers were affordable AND pretty tall. For a beer garden, Biergarten does it right. Damn tasty food, great neighborhood and local vibe, great patio space and quick friendly service. Came here as we were waiting for a reservation at another spot in Hayes and by 6:30pm this place is packed. It was a beautiful day in SF so this place was a great place to come with friends since it's all outdoors and allows you to have pets. Seats here are communal benches so during peak hours you may getting comfy with some neighbors. They have one container that you can order from with one register so lines can get long during peak time. They have a decent selection of beers and wine $7+. As for food options they had pretzels, currywurst, sliders, brats, and sandwiches $10+. Didn't get to try the food this time around but the hard cider option they had was solid and was dangerous because you couldn't taste the alc. read more

This place doesn't really replicate that since they're serving beer out of a shipping container, but gives it a SF spin to it. Prices here are fairly reasonable, 0.5L for $9, 1L for $18. They sell radlers here so if you're not a huge fan of beer, this is a great alternative since it's half beer and half citrus juice. Located literally in a park on the road, this place is hard to visit. The opening hours are very restrictive (2pm to 8pm for an alcohol place? that's crazy, like having a brunch place open at night!). We were there before the 2pm opening time and there was already a line waiting outside the gate. Wooot Once the place opened, the inside was packed. All the benches were filled with people, and there was still a line outside. Even though there's a lot of folks in the house, the place is chill--folks everywhere are chatting, sipping beers, laughing, having a good time. In terms of beer quality, the drinks are solid. You can get a large cup of 1L beer--nice. I got the brass monkey, which was a OJ mixed beer--pretty orangy :) Definitely recommend going for the 1L cup if you have a chance. You order 1 Liter of beer because you convince yourself you're that thirsty and you can drink it all. You chug a third of it and feel better. In fact, you feel GREAT. Then your pretzel comes out and you eat it so fast, you look around to decide who'd want to perform the Heimlich Maneuver when the inevitable choking will happen. You don't choke and you're still alive. But now you're so thirsty from all the salt you chug another third of your beer. You feel OK. You look around and have an epiphany over whether this is what life is all about. You decide that it is and you attempt to drink the last third of your beer. You almost throw up. I do enjoy their potato salad, but I decided to try the "meat knot" today. The knot is just a pretzel with something inside. This one had like a slice of prosciutto or something. It was terribly overpriced at $7 and not worth it. It should be like $4.50-$5.00 and no more than that. It is a snack and not a meal. Just enough time to decide on some food and drinks. + They have one of my favourite beers on tap! Schineider Nelson Sauvin. It's an amazing beer with a nice floral-esque nose AND flavour to it. I ended up getting two of these. + The food was decent. Better than average, but not amazing. The prices were reasonable, not that expensive, and accurately reflected the value food. ++ We got pork belly sliders, deviled eggs, and a pretzel. They were all fairly delicious. The deviled eggs are pink! When we went up for round two of beers, the queue was fairly long and it was quite a wait. Seating is definitely hard. They have plenty of seats, but this place gets packed and popular! I cannot comment on parking because I biked. There is no real "service" happening here. You buy your beer and then you sit down. Food is brought to you, and your tables bused. Very little interaction, so we'll keep that neutral.
