3.5/4 out of 5 Stars Would come again. It's been at least 10 years since my last visit. So it was time to come back. We made a reservation but it wasn't very full - so probably don't need one. The food was great except for the potato pancakes. Those tasted like oil & were fried until they were totally dried out. But that was the only fail for the night. My veal schnitzel was HUGE. I wanted a salad to go with my fried food bonanza so they told me I needed to order the full portion. Unless you are starving - the full portion was too much for me. Everyone really enjoyed their entrees! 0 complaints. We had to switch tables - they had a light bulb flickering that was making me feel queasy. They had absolutely no problem changing our table & I was better after moving. Our waitress was super nice and really helpful when we were trying to decide. Parking is hard on a Friday night but we got lucky.

SOOOO GOOD!! Beers slap and every item we ordered was delicious. Portions are huge and the food always comes out hot and fresh. So much seating indoors and service was so friendly. Amazing spot for friends and family. The ambiance was fantastic. Definitely recommend schweinebraten or the schweinebraten sandwich. The meat melts in your mouth and the jam was a great touch.

Food 4.5/5 Service 4.5/5 Ambiance 5/5 Overall Value 5/5 A group of six friends met for dinner her Wednesday night. The food and service were very good. We sat in a room in back near the fireplace I wish I took photos of all the food as I took only my dish of sauerbraten which is lean brisket in a reduced wine and vinegar gravy, pickled red cabbage and spatzle. Between us we ordered: Jigger schnitzel von scheen 2 pork cutlets, spatzle and side pickled salad, chicken cordon bleu and finally schweinebraten a smoked ham hock in beer with sauerkraut and French fries. Each of our meals were well prepared, authentic and delicious. We had a holiday spiced wine that was wonderful and assorted beers on tap. We all throughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely return. Lots of street parking available and I recommend without reservation.

One of my favorite gems in the east bay! Speisekammer gets busy on weekend nights, so be sure to come early! There are three/four rooms inside for dining. Everything in their menu is great. The portions are generous and small is like regular. Restrooms are clean. Parking is on street and in the back lot.

I haven't been here for years and the change in ownership. Still probably the best German restaurant in the area. They decor inside is authentic and they have plenty of good beer on tap. Service is friendly and excellent. I had the Sauerbraten since I haven't had it in years. It's very good with tender meat and the cabbage and spatzle are great. The schnitzel is very good and comes with roasted potatoes. The pretzels with cheese are good and a good appetizer or something to go with beer. The Jägerschnitzel was decent but they need to do a better job breading and frying the cutlets. We tried the dessert and the strudel was the best. I wish they made the homemade potato dumplings I know it's a lot of work but it would make everything even better. Overall a great restaurant we all enjoyed it as a group.

I was so excited to see a German restaurant around these parts as they are few and far between. Unfortunately this place was not authentic nor did it wow my palate. The potato pancakes were made from thin spun potatoes, creating a birds nest effect, which were dry, sharp and frankly horrible to eat. German potato pancakes should be similar to a latka consistency and this completely missed the mark. The sauerbraten was also a disappointment. The meat was tough and there was no sour or sweet to be had. What makes this dish so good is the tender meat, which is marinated for days and that cravable sour and sweet flavor that is oh so yummy. It's a shame that my itch for German food couldn't be scratched... onward with the search for this amazing cuisine!

Friendly, personable server, thank you Fernando! Bavarian inspired ambience with your choice of indoor or outdoor dining. We chose outdoor. Mr. Wonderful enjoyed the Frikadellen with Spatzle. Very, very good! His meal came with a refreshing carrot salad. I had the potato pancakes which were unique.

There is a very narrow parking area on the side for 6 cars. 4.7: Jager schnitzel, half order. Very good! Spatzle was great as well. 4.3: Potato pancakes. String-style. Not browned enough, too mushy. Next time, ask for well-done. Sour cream is extra; bring your own. 4.5: Grevennsteiner Kellerbier, an Unfiltered lager. It has a nice malty flavor.

We are planning a trip to Germany in the spring so wanted to get our palates ready. We enjoyed a pilsner and dunkel, along with schnitzel, pork, red cabbage, and spaetzle. The staff were accommodating and the portions were generous, lots of leftovers to take home. Nice indoor and outdoor seating, will return the next time we are craving German food.

I was arranging a birthday dinner and was thinking of a restaurant for event. Since German food is something new to the group, I decided that Speisekammer would be a new choice for everyone and made reservations three weeks beforehand. Our group arrived for our 5:30 reservations on a Saturday and we were promptly seated at a corner long table in the main dining room. We were greeted by our waiter, Alexander, as he gave us the menus. After taking drink orders, I ordered appetizers as the guests perused the menu. Reibekuchen - the crispy potato pancakes were thick and crispy. Served with house made apple compote. Delicious. Fried Brussel Sprouts - the fried sprouts were mixed with roasted pumpkin seeds and served with an aioli sauce. Good flavors and the seeds put a different twist on this dish. Smoked Pork Chop - I had the grilled smoked pork chop that came with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, which I substituted with spätzle. The pork chop was tender and moist and resembled ham. Love spätzle. Jager Schnitzels - had a taste and the mushroom sauce was tasty with the schnitzel. Sauerbraten - the beef tri-tip in a red wine sauce was fork tender. Wiener Schnitzels, Wurst Gegrillt and Potato salad with bacon were other dishes ordered. After our meals, Alexander brought a complementary apple strudel with ice cream to the birthday celebrant, a very nice touch. The service by Alex and servers were friendly and efficient. Used plates were timely removed. I tried several German restaurants over the years and the food here is consistently good compared to those places. The restaurant was full during our time there. I guess that says something.

01/11/2026: This is about the 6th or 7th time my husband and I have been here. Since my husband is from Germany, that says a lot for this restaurant! Brought some dear friends who had never really tried German food before (except for the occasional sausage and sauerkraut at some supposed German faire or market). They loved everything and said they definitely want to come back!! We had heard that the restaurant had new owners, but we were happy to find that the quality and flavor of the food were still excellent! The service was also excellent; our waiter was very attentive even as the restaurant started to fill up for lunch. We started out with the Nurenberg sausage appetizer and sides of red cabbage (rotkohl) and sauerkraut so our friends could try them. We were so hungry we didn't take pictures! My friend had the Smoked Pork Chop (Kassler) which came with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. Both of our husbands had the Sauerbraten (both small) which came with spätzle and rotkohl. I had the Jägerschnitzel (small) which came with spätzle. I also ordered a side of the dill cucumber salad. We were all stuffed but we had to make sure our friends had the Apple Strudel! Another excellent meal at one of our favorite restaurants! Thank you!!

Food: (4/5) I love how all the proteins are a balanced meal in that all of them include a unique pairing of protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables. The dishes are very authentic and flavorful. I appreciate how they do not skimp out on portions. Upon asking the waiter, the mentioned that the small is approximately 2/3 of the large size and assured us that they have large portions. I ordered the small size sauerbraten which included a generous portion of pickled red cabbage which tasted like a slaw, spatzle which was similar to a uniquely shaped, dry pasta tossed in oil, and their tender beef tri tip that was coated in a delicious gravy. I really enjoyed the beef tri tip and the spatzle was unique but would have preferred mashed potatoes, should the restaurant allow for substitutions. However, the red cabbage was not my cup of tea as throughout my meal, the vinegar/pickled taste became too heavy for my liking. Just as the server advised, surely I left Speisekammer feeling not only satisfied, but also stuffed. Service: (5/5) The servers were very kind and welcoming when we arrived. They were very helpful with any questions we asked and kindly checked up on us throughout our meal, even to ask how we enjoyed the food. They also greeted us on the way out. Ambiance: (5/5) The interior seemed like a cozy in and made you feel just right at home. The tables are set with a small sharing/bread plate and a wrapped set of utensils. I appreciated how they provided a sharing plate by default. The decorations throughout the restaurant were very on theme with the cuisine and was reminiscent of Oktoberfest. Enjoyed that they also had large screen TVs that was playing the Warriors game. Nearby street parking was relatively easy to find and is free after 6 PM. The neighborhood is surrounded by kind people, as when we were trying to park, the salon in front came out to advise us that the meter was probably already off and thus parking was free despite it being 5:30 PM.

The menu features traditional Bavarian fare, and we started with the Bier Snack Platter, an appetizer board that came with a warm pretzel, braunschweiger (venison pate), salami, obatzda (Brie, Pilsner, and cream cheese spread), spicy peanuts, and pickled egg/veggies. The soft pretzel wasn't particularly authentic and lacked a chewy texture, but I was a fan of the slightly funky, creamy venison braunschweiger. From the selection of sausages, we tried the weisswurst (a white veal and pork sausage), a duck with Vermont cheese sausage, and a smoked Montana venison sausage. My favorite was definitely the non-traditional duck with cheese, which had a nice meaty flavor and unctuousness from the cheese. Finally, we had the Jägerschnitzel, a pan-fried pork cutlet topped with a wild mushroom cream sauce, and served with sides of sauerkraut, rotkohl (sweet braised red cabbage), and spätzle (egg noodles). My favorite side was the spätzle, which had been lightly pan-fried and had a nice caramelized, crispy texture. Overall, the food here was all decent, though most of the items weren't particularly fresh tasting or authentic. The duck sausage was a highlight, but I wouldn't go out of my way for the food here.

I ordered food to go, including the meat and pickled vegetable selection, pretzels, and cheese sauce. When I got home, I realized the cheese sauce was missing. I tried calling the restaurant multiple times, but no one answered the phone, so I had to drive all the way back to retrieve an item that should have been included in the first place. That ate up about 40 minutes of my evening. When I returned, I received a small apology, but no meaningful attempt to make things right -- no comp, no offer of a dessert, no gesture of goodwill. For a first-time customer who had to make a second trip because of the restaurant's error, that felt pretty disappointing. The pretzel situation was also confusing and left a bad taste. The menu lists "add a pretzel" for $3 under the meat and pickled vegetable selection. When I ordered, the server told me the pretzel came with the meal. Based on that, I reasonably assumed that if I ordered an additional pretzel, the extra charge would be $3. Instead, I was charged both $3 and another $6.50 for the extra pretzel. When I asked about it later, I was told the pricing was structured that way for gluten-free customers, but that was not explained when I ordered. The menu and verbal explanation did not match the final charge, and it felt misleading. To make matters worse, the house-made pretzel itself was disappointing. There wasn't even any salt on it. At a German restaurant, a pretzel should be one of the easiest things to get right: salty, chewy, browned, and satisfying. This was not that. Between the missing cheese sauce, the unanswered phone, the extra drive, the confusing charges, the lack of a meaningful service recovery, and the underwhelming pretzel, this was not a good first impression. I left feeling taken advantage of rather than welcomed as a new customer. I understand mistakes happen. What matters is how a restaurant handles them. In this case, Brotzeit had a clear opportunity to turn an annoying mistake into a decent customer service moment, and they didn't. I'm actually pretty upset writing this review. I forked over a lot of money, I'm and I dont have a huge going out budget, I work caregiving and I sometimes want to give myself a treat, and this whole interaction really set my evening off poorly. I ate later than I intended which cuts into my sleep, which in turn does NOT set me up for having the energy and mental strength to do my job, and I actually feel MISLED by the menu and explanation by the waitstaff and the apology and nothing else, no acknowledgment for the time wasted, and not even a "what can I do, let's make it right." Total. Disappointment. Yeah I am NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER!! I shall NOT be giving ONE THIN DIME MORE OF MY HARD EARNED MONEY to this business!! They haven't returned my voicemail regarding my bad experience. They obviously don't care. And the cheese spread I did get smelled spoiled the day after. Didnt want to eat it.

The atmosphere is exactly what you want from a place like this as it is lively but not loud, cozy but not cramped, and always buzzing with good energy, from the staff through to most of the patrons on any given night. The menu is a greatest-hits tour of German comfort food. The deviled eggs are a must to start your meal and the wienerschnitzel is my personal go‑to as it is crispy, moist, and so flavorful every time I've had it. The jägerschnitzel is another standout if you are feeling something a little lighter and saucier as it rich and savory in all the right ways, and the sausages are always banging and perfect alongside a big stein of beer. It's the kind of food that feels made for long conversations and slow sipping. What really elevates Suppenküche, though, is the people. The staff are super friendly and clearly know their stuff, always ready with a beer recommendation or a menu suggestion and the patrons tend to match that vibe; if you end up at the bar or sharing a table, which is pretty common if you come with a small group, you're likely to find yourself chatting with someone new before long. There's honestly no better way to make new friends in SF than bonding over schnitzel and a great German beer at Suppenküche.

The sausages were so juicy and flavorful, two of them stood out but I didn't know which one was which. It wasn't too heavy, which I appreciated as well. Either way, a great restaurant to try out in the Palo Alto area.

TL;DR -- Make a reservation ahead of time, it is worth it! Pepper steak medium rare is the move,…read morewith the garlic prawns and sausage trio as your appetizers! We had a reservation for Father's day! Definitely recommend reservations for Naschmarkt because they prioritized indoor seating over their outdoor seating for those who booked ahead of time (not that their outdoor seating was bad). The interior of the restaurant gives off "upper scale" energy but we didn't feel out of place wearing a shorts and a collar tee. They had a great selection of mocktails and beers. We shared a blood orange mocktail (forgot the exact name) but that was pretty NICE. They charge for water at the table. Just like it is in Europe. You can also ask for bread but that is not complimentary. We got the garlic prawns, goat cheese salad, and the three sausage taster platter for appetizers. The salad was fresh and the prawns were succulent and perfectly cooked! The garlic bread that came with the shrimp tasted so good in the sauce. Of the 3 sausages, my family's favorite was the spicy sausage, which had the most TASTY flavor. Of the entrees, my favorite was the pepper steak (chef's rec: medium rare). That was so tender, juicy, and the sauce it came with was DELECTABLE!! The Jager Schnitzel was also a top pick! The creamy sauce with the mushrooms were TASTY! We got the Classic Weiner Schnitzel (veal). That can definitely be shared by two adults. That was massive! With the Schnitzel, our waitress recommended that we sub our sides for the SPÄTZLE and man oh man that was THE MOVE. Get the SPÄTZLE, its like a buttery soft pasta (meant to not be al dente, but like an eggy-pasta texture). We did not have room for dessert, but I regret not window shopping the dessert menu. Next time!
