We were looking for a German pub in the East Bay where we could enjoy some good German food, grab a beer, and watch the World Cup, and Speisekammer ended up being a great find. It's tucked away in an unassuming neighborhood, but once inside, the cozy, rustic atmosphere really adds to the experience. We ordered the pretzel, bratwurst, and chicken schnitzel. The portions were generous especially the schnitzel, which was huge and easily shareable. Everything was flavorful and well prepared. The curry beer cheese sauce paired especially well with the pretzel, with just a slight bitterness that complemented the bread nicely. One thing to note for anyone who doesn't eat pork: the roasted potatoes contain bacon. I didn't realize that when ordering, so I just picked it out. The pickled vegetables were a pleasant surprise. they were tangy and refreshing without being overly salty. For dessert, we shared the German chocolate cake. It was rich, decadent, and a very generous slice. My husband also really enjoyed the beer selection, which had plenty of German options to choose from. The food was great except for the potato pancakes. Those tasted like oil & were fried until they were totally dried out. But that was the only fail for the night. My veal schnitzel was HUGE. I wanted a salad to go with my fried food bonanza so they told me I needed to order the full portion. Unless you are starving - the full portion was too much for me. Everyone really enjoyed their entrees! 0 complaints. We had to switch tables - they had a light bulb flickering that was making me feel queasy. They had absolutely no problem changing our table & I was better after moving. Our waitress was super nice and really helpful when we were trying to decide. It was our first time trying the restaurant for my brother's birthday. There's plenty of seating inside and a nice outside patio/deck area. There are some parking spots next to the building and street parking. Our group had 13 people and we had plenty of space. The portions are huge! The potato pancakes were not what we expected. They were more like crunchy noodles than soft shredded potatoes. I would not recommend them. That aside, everything else was delicious! It was a little disappointing we had to order Spaetzle as a side and it wasn't automatically one of the options to choose from for free. They were good. The bratwurst and sausages all had a good taste. The staff was attentive and helpful when we asked to get the World Cup game on the TV closest to our table. We sat in a room in back near the fireplace I wish I took photos of all the food as I took only my dish of sauerbraten which is lean brisket in a reduced wine and vinegar gravy, pickled red cabbage and spatzle. Between us we ordered: Jigger schnitzel von scheen 2 pork cutlets, spatzle and side pickled salad, chicken cordon bleu and finally schweinebraten a smoked ham hock in beer with sauerkraut and French fries. Each of our meals were well prepared, authentic and delicious. We had a holiday spiced wine that was wonderful and assorted beers on tap. We all throughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely return. I haven't been here for years and the change in ownership. Still probably the best German restaurant in the area. They decor inside is authentic and they have plenty of good beer on tap. Service is friendly and excellent. I had the Sauerbraten since I haven't had it in years. It's very good with tender meat and the cabbage and spatzle are great. The schnitzel is very good and comes with roasted potatoes. The pretzels with cheese are good and a good appetizer or something to go with beer. The Jägerschnitzel was decent but they need to do a better job breading and frying the cutlets. We tried the dessert and the strudel was the best. I wish they made the homemade potato dumplings I know it's a lot of work but it would make everything even better. Overall a great restaurant we all enjoyed it as a group. read more

I was so excited to see a German restaurant around these parts as they are few and far between. Unfortunately this place was not authentic nor did it wow my palate. The potato pancakes were made from thin spun potatoes, creating a birds nest effect, which were dry, sharp and frankly horrible to eat. German potato pancakes should be similar to a latka consistency and this completely missed the mark. The sauerbraten was also a disappointment. The meat was tough and there was no sour or sweet to be had. What makes this dish so good is the tender meat, which is marinated for days and that cravable sour and sweet flavor that is oh so yummy. It's a shame that my itch for German food couldn't be scratched... onward with the search for this amazing cuisine! read more

I used to enjoy eating here but the quality is gone. I ordered things that used to be delicious and they are just plain bad now. The sausage appetizer was not hot enough and I sent it back because it seemed like it was cooked hours ago. The pretzel looks like it was frozen and then reheated. All cracked and dehydrated. Yuck. A piece of a Wiener schnitzel overcooked and oily crumbs plus an extra charged for veal! I was arranging a birthday dinner and was thinking of a restaurant for event. Since German food is something new to the group, I decided that Speisekammer would be a new choice for everyone and made reservations three weeks beforehand. Our group arrived for our 5:30 reservations on a Saturday and we were promptly seated at a corner long table in the main dining room. We were greeted by our waiter, Alexander, as he gave us the menus. After taking drink orders, I ordered appetizers as the guests perused the menu. Reibekuchen - the crispy potato pancakes were thick and crispy. Served with house made apple compote. Delicious. Fried Brussel Sprouts - the fried sprouts were mixed with roasted pumpkin seeds and served with an aioli sauce. Good flavors and the seeds put a different twist on this dish. Smoked Pork Chop - I had the grilled smoked pork chop that came with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, which I substituted with spätzle. The pork chop was tender and moist and resembled ham. Love spätzle. Jager Schnitzels - had a taste and the mushroom sauce was tasty with the schnitzel. Sauerbraten - the beef tri-tip in a red wine sauce was fork tender. Wiener Schnitzels, Wurst Gegrillt and Potato salad with bacon were other dishes ordered. After our meals, Alexander brought a complementary apple strudel with ice cream to the birthday celebrant, a very nice touch. The service by Alex and servers were friendly and efficient. Used plates were timely removed. I tried several German restaurants over the years and the food here is consistently good compared to those places. The restaurant was full during our time there. Food: (4/5) I love how all the proteins are a balanced meal in that all of them include a unique pairing of protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables. The dishes are very authentic and flavorful. I appreciate how they do not skimp out on portions. Upon asking the waiter, the mentioned that the small is approximately 2/3 of the large size and assured us that they have large portions. I ordered the small size sauerbraten which included a generous portion of pickled red cabbage which tasted like a slaw, spatzle which was similar to a uniquely shaped, dry pasta tossed in oil, and their tender beef tri tip that was coated in a delicious gravy. I really enjoyed the beef tri tip and the spatzle was unique but would have preferred mashed potatoes, should the restaurant allow for substitutions. However, the red cabbage was not my cup of tea as throughout my meal, the vinegar/pickled taste became too heavy for my liking. Just as the server advised, surely I left Speisekammer feeling not only satisfied, but also stuffed. Service: (5/5) The servers were very kind and welcoming when we arrived. They were very helpful with any questions we asked and kindly checked up on us throughout our meal, even to ask how we enjoyed the food. They also greeted us on the way out. Ambiance: (5/5) The interior seemed like a cozy in and made you feel just right at home. The tables are set with a small sharing/bread plate and a wrapped set of utensils. I appreciated how they provided a sharing plate by default. The decorations throughout the restaurant were very on theme with the cuisine and was reminiscent of Oktoberfest. Enjoyed that they also had large screen TVs that was playing the Warriors game. Nearby street parking was relatively easy to find and is free after 6 PM. The neighborhood is surrounded by kind people, as when we were trying to park, the salon in front came out to advise us that the meter was probably already off and thus parking was free despite it being 5:30 PM. read more

01/11/2026: This is about the 6th or 7th time my husband and I have been here. Since my husband is from Germany, that says a lot for this restaurant! Brought some dear friends who had never really tried German food before (except for the occasional sausage and sauerkraut at some supposed German faire or market). They loved everything and said they definitely want to come back!! We had heard that the restaurant had new owners, but we were happy to find that the quality and flavor of the food were still excellent! The service was also excellent; our waiter was very attentive even as the restaurant started to fill up for lunch. We started out with the Nurenberg sausage appetizer and sides of red cabbage (rotkohl) and sauerkraut so our friends could try them. We were so hungry we didn't take pictures! My friend had the Smoked Pork Chop (Kassler) which came with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. Both of our husbands had the Sauerbraten (both small) which came with spätzle and rotkohl. I had the Jägerschnitzel (small) which came with spätzle. I also ordered a side of the dill cucumber salad. We were all stuffed but we had to make sure our friends had the Apple Strudel! We also tried the crispy potatoes for apps. All the food were delicious but my favorite was the apps. The drinks were tasty and strong. My spicy margarita really tasted spicy. I've had some decent experiences here in the past, but judging from recent reviews and my last visit, I think they're struggling a bit with service. Came in for dinner on a Saturday evening at 6, with tickets to see a movie that started at 7:45. They seated us quickly enough, gave us our menus, and then we were left alone for over 30 minutes. During this time we asked passing wait staff twice if we could please order, and were told our waiter would be sent over, but no one ever came. By 6:40, I was sure if we waited any longer, there was no way we'd make our movie, and we left and got burgers at the spot right by the theater. read more

Well, this restaurant has the right-ish look my Kolsch was on the warm size and a bit flat. The first thing that came out was the German pretzel: it was maybe 1/2 the size of what I was expecting, but the cheese sauce was good. My Jägerschnitzel was overcooked, dry and not at all what I was expecting: which would have been a breaded schnitzel with a peppercorn mushroom gravy. This was just coated in salt, pepper, and paprika, and just tough. It was served with spaetzle noodles, which were stuck together. for those that don't know, spezi is a blended German soft drink: Coca-Cola with orange soda. Their spezi was Pepsi with orange soda, but tasted like Pepsi (how is Pepsi still a thing?) even if you like Pepsi, this isn't anything tasting remotely like spezi - no citrus flavor. oh well, they sort of tried. The pork shank was too salty. But otherwise the flavor was good. The kids liked the chicken and Wiener schnitzels, but again they were over cooked. It's a shame. Maybe they need a timer for their fryer. Overall, Spiesekammer looks the part, but for me, it's a themed restaurant that doesn't know or perhaps recall what German food should taste like. my buddy enjoyed his currywurst. for me, the best part ended up being the pickled veggie side dishes that came with the full-sized meals. Beets, cabbage and carrots. Our server was nice, but hard to find. (restaurant wasn't crowded - maybe they were short staffed. it was Saturday, around 2pm The final strike: You know how on the bill they automatically calculate tip percentages? This is supposed to be calculated based on the subtotal. They "helpfully" calculated tip based on the subtotal + tax. Seems dishonest to me. I don't mind tipping more, but I want honest/accurate calculations from which to start, not padded in and tipping on the government's fee. Overall, not a bad place to hang, and if you haven't had German food, this is close enough. I doubt we'll be back though. read more

I've wanted to come here to try the food for years! The service was fantastic and I really enjoyed our orders: a pretzel with their beer cheddar sauce, and the mixed sausage, kraut, and fries (sub for the potatoes). The sausages were snappy (that's what the sausage texture thing is called, right?) and had great flavor. The sauerkraut had great texture and I loved the tangy flavor with the umami bacon bits. The pretzel was fresh and fluffy- it balanced out the saltiness of the cheese sauce. The beer rounded everything out perfectly. The price was so reasonable. Whenever I visit Alameda, I request a trip to Speisekammer for delicious German Food. The restaurant inside is very cozy and warm but it is pretty large and can accommodate large parties. I prefer to sit outside in the summer and inside during the winter. I prefer if with a small group to dine in the vibrant bar area. The restaurant was sold about 7 months ago and I was worried things might have changed. Much to my delight, they have not. Service is alway spot on. My favorites: Spätzel - ask them to cook it a bit longer so it gets crunchy on top. The potato pancakes are out of this world! Served with applesauce and ask for sour cream on the side too. The appetizer of pork sausages on top of sour kraut. Yum! The pork schnitzel served with roasted potatoes is delicious. Not greasy at all. Their german salad which is pickled carrots, beats, cucumbers and cabbage pairs well with most all of their menu options. And many of the entree's come with the salad. Nice German spot across the street from Subpar in Alameda. Kids menu is extensive and good. I liked the service and they had a nice table for the 8 of us - 4 kids and 4 adults. Normally I love all their food, but this time it was a bit overseasoned. There were 6 bay leaves in the serving of saurkraut that came with the schweinbraten. Also, a lot of crunchy little brown things not tasty. The pork was as delicious as ever, altho the mashed potatoes tasted as if they came from a box. This was strange because the mashed potatoes that came with the delicious cabbage rolls were excellent. The 6 nurn brats are a bit thin in diameter, like a breakfast sausage, and almost long enough for a bun. I put 2 brats in each hot dog bun with their tasty mustard and saurkraut, after picking out the Bay leaves. Very yummy. Grosser salet excellent as usual. Popped in for a date night on Saturday. Beautiful day- patio was full, inside was moderately full. Great atmosphere and chill vibe. Our second time coming in. We ordered the pretzel with beer cheese for an appetizer. I ordered a .5 liter of the Bitburger beer. Nice and light- so good! Hubs got the sauerbraten and I got the pork jagerschnitzel. Delicious all around! The sauerkraut with the sauerbraten was sweet and tangy- perfect pairing. I love the rustic cut spatzel. read more

I would give it an eight out of 10. Service staff was very attentive. The guys came by several times and every time our beer glass is down to about 30% they would ask if we want another one. We sat indoor so it was a little dark, and the decor was a little bit bland. Bathroom was very clean though, I would give it 10 out of 10, at least for the woman's room. This time my mom wasn't able to come, she has dementia and has been slipping away. But we still brought my dad and had a great time with my best friends, my brother, my husband and friend's lovely mom. I am all about the sausages here. We have frequented this place quite a few times over the years. I know this place has a dedicated following and we aren't them. We both like a good beer, me less so anymore, and they have a full bar but being a German restaurant..... they serve German food. I'm not a huge fan except for some sausages and my partner not at all. I do like a good German pretzal though. To bad we have to go elsewhere to find a really good one at a non German place. I wonder if anyone there actually samples the food. It's good for a change of scenery once in awhile bit that's about it. Recently we dropped in while Oktoberfest festivities were going on with a full blown polka band and traditional German costumes on the staff and many of the patrons. Ladderhpusen and weird dresses everywhere. Where do they store this stuff just be pulled out a few days a year. Like I said a dedicated following. I'm sure I have alot of distant relative always there since I'm Norwegian and my ancestors advance their way through Europe. Given the food I see why they didn't stay. Pleasant afternoon lunch on the patio before catching our flight from OAK. Service was good and came with personal menu recommendations. Food came out hot and was delicious satisfying the craving for German cuisine. I had read that parking could be challenging but on this Friday afternoon, it was easy on the street and very close by.
